I acquired one of these about a year ago at a garage sale $400.00, I took it home, cleaned it up, oiled it for what appeared to be the first time in it's life. I then ordered some walnut grips with laser cut machined aluminum Ruger emblems recessed into each. In my opinion the weapon is beautiful...

Enjoyed your video very much. I got my P90 about 15 years ago. I agree with everything you said about it. It's a tank but a reliable one. When you pull the trigger, it shoots. And as far as the 8-round clip, remember; It's a .45, you only have to hit 'em once.

Thanks for your video, I really enjoyed watching it. I bought my Ruger P90 brand new back in 1994 & I've had it ever since & in all that time it has never jammed on me. I take pretty good care of it by cleaning & oiling it after every range time. I'm kinda old fashion & I love hammer fired pistols, eventhough I have a Striker Fire Springfield XDS-9mm Mod 2. It's something about the all steal & alloy hammered pistols I just love. My next gun will be the Ruger SR1911.
Glad you liked it and thanks for watching. Thanks also for the positive comment. Yep, I do the same - clean and oil after each range time. Take care of them and they'll be ready for you. I bought mine in 02. Had a bad guiderod from the factory and would seize shut. Easy fix. After that, it's been dead reliable. It'll eat anything you put in the mag. Best bedside pistol you can buy.
I like my P-90 for the reasons that other might hate it, and that’s because of the size/weight. Fits in my hand perfectly and the recoil is a lot less than what I was expecting when I first took it to the range. Overall a great handgun.

Great gun.. Ruger did make a TH model with Hogue style grips. Great pistol to compare to the 1911. American, but completely different. The Ruger P series is just funky. Bulky, but reliable. Deadly accurate. Underrated.

I own one and I shoot once per year just to know that I still have my eye. I am an 81 year old Marine. I shoot 9 shots right handed and then 9 shots left handed at a 7 yd target with the CHP. You may cover all 18 holes with the bottom of a 1 liter soda bottle. Easy to care for.

I stumbled across your vid. Very informative. I have a P90, my cousin has a P91, and my friend has a P89. In all aspects, if you run out of ammo, you have a hammer to beat your aggressor!! They are big, heavy, and accurate!! We all love them!

I have the P 90 DC and it's a tank of a gun. I enjoy shooting it a lot. Very well built and very reliable. I have owned this pistol for going on 30 years and I have never had a problem with it. I would buy it again if I saw one on sale anywhere. The only downfall of this gun if you can call it that is the single stack magazines.

Got lucky and found one of these in my local shop and I snatched it up. Mine is a 2004 production complete with case, manual and test shot shell when it was manufactured. Love the center balance and feel of this gun. It’s not a conceal carry gun by any means but it’s a great home protection or for open carry. Only negative thing I can say that having no safety is a bit wonky. I’ve still got to strip it and clean it really well because of it’s age and unknown history it’s hard to say how long it’s been and mine feels as it needs lubricating on the main mechanisms. Beyond that, you’re right, it’s not flashy like the new models being produced, but after you hold it and get the feel for it , you’ll love it. Great gun, great review. Very informative and detailed.
Wow! Very nice. Indeed, it's a heck of a gun. I'm still looking for one in the right condition and at the right price. Sounds like you found yours. @@mickmacstabletopreviews8466 thanks, Yes I did indeed sub up and the rest. Haven’t had time to look at any of your other videos. Mainly sought out review/opinion and inside info for this Ruger. They all have their own quirks and bonuses. Also purchased a Springfield Saint 5.56/2.23 with 9.6” Barrel yesterday to go along with it. I’ve been holding out for that with the mad dash on those models since they suddenly became so popular. Hoping you have a review on that got lucky with that gun too price wise. Bought a Sig Romeo5 Red dot optic sight to go on top. Very nice optic for the price point. Anyway, i’m pretty active in comment sections so i’m sure we will chat a lot if you too are an active poster/commenter. Keep up the great work.

I put the same grips on my P90. Great gun. I was in the Coast Guard when they switched from the 45 to the 9mm. I hated the 9. The 45 has more stopping power and the Berettas just felt muzzle heavy.

Over the course of several years I've managed to accumulate almost a complete collection of the Ruger P series guns. I currently have a P89, P90DC, P94DC in 9mm, P95, P95DC and P97DC. I also have one of the P series 9mm carbines that use the same 9mm magazines as the P89 and P95. All of them except the P94 are very accurate. For some reason my P94 is not as accurate as the P89 or P95. I've also had the slide lock lever on my 45 acp P97 pop out slightly while shooting and it causes a jam. I sent it back to Ruger. They said they replaced the cam block recoil guide rod, but the slide lock lever still pops out very often. I have several holsters for all of them, but I have smaller options for carry guns so I don't use them. Several years ago I did carry the P95 in an IWB hybrid holster for an entire year and it was okay. Today I prefer to pocket carry a 9mm Ruger LCR revolver 24/7 and a Sig P365 on my hip in a Safariland ALS holster when I go out of town. These old P series guns are built a lot stronger than they need to be. I think I remember seeing some torture test Ruger did to the P85 or P89 back in the 1980s. I forget the specifics, but to see what they did to the gun and it still functioned was pretty amazing and that's why a lot of people say they are " built like tanks "
Wow! Thanks for watching and thanks for all the information on the Ruger P series. I'm afraid I'm way behind you on collecting this series but I've started to work on it. Don't give up on that slide lock problem! My experience with Ruger customer service has been..Excellent! Call them and tell them about the unresolved problem and I'm telling you: They'll make good!
@@dv270salto7 Not if it's a gun they no longer have parts or support for. Their older version PC carbines from the late 90s and early 2000s are an example. They do not fix any problems with them anymore. In general I agree with you though. Ruger does have very good customer service on the guns they still have parts for.

Great review!!! Note to users of the P90: the P90 magazine has a 1911 style follower versus the polymer follower the original P90 magazines came with. The "new" style magazines WILL dig into or gouge the aluminum frame and it is recommended or advised that " new" style P90 magazine with 1911 type followers be replaced with Wilson Combat polymer followers. Just FYI.....

You can't go wrong with the Ruger P series of any caliber. I have a P90 and a P89. Yes "dated" and "aged poorly" by today's standards but new or used, find me a handgun made by a worldwide, well-known by even non-gun people manufacturer comes with two magazines, no ZAMAK involved in the construction $430 or less in 9x19mm, .40 or .45
My first pistol I bought was a P90. I bought it because....It looked cool. Mine came with Ruger badged Hogue grips. Single action is SUPER accurate. Stock sights were meh. A big block of a gun. If you miss your target, you can use it as a blunt instrument in close combat. But if you'd miss, it's on you. Because despite being a brick, they are accurate.
Still one of my favorites too. Thanks for the feedback. Always appreciated. And thanks for watching. If you haven't already, I hope you'll check out my other "Mick Mac" Tabletop Review videos on UA-cam.
@Mick Mac's Tabletop Reviews Can you help me figure out a problem please? My dad gave me a ruger p90 for protection. It use to work just fine but I just found out that the thumb safety switch is jammed. I can't get it to budge. Do you have any idea what might be wrong? I'm not a gun expert that knows how to take apart a pistol. Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated.
You have a very nice Dad! The P90 is a great firearm and fairly rugged. I've not heard of the problem you are having before. One thing you might try is removing the slide from the frame (as you would for cleaning) and checking the safety's function. Since the safety also activates a hammer block, my best guess is that the firing pin or something has become the problem interfering with the movement of the safety. There is a good disassembly video at ua-cam.com/video/eWYTUqgcFhs/v-deo.html if you want to try to tackle this yourself. It's not a horrible task. Once you determine what's up, you can order replacement parts on-line if needed. Unfortunately, if your skills aren't up to it, you'll need to take it to a gun store and ask for it to be repaired. Most will have a gunsmith on staff or they will be able to recommend a reliable gunsmith in your area. Sorry i couldn't be of more help, but thanks for watching. I've had that problem with my P-944. On the right side manual safety lever, there is a detent and a spring loaded plunger. On my P-94, the plunger had developed some grooves that bound into the frame where the safety"on" detent transitioned to the safety "off" detent when trying to actuate the safety levers. When I positioned the plunger so it's smooth, groove-less side rode over the transition, the safety functioned perfectly. Ruger is sending me a new plunger and spring, no charge..Also: make sure that the plunger is correctly inserted into the lever as if not, jamming of the safety levers can occur, as I found out.

Got mine for 175 at a pawn shop. The guy who sold it was headed out the door as I was walking in, the counter guy was filling out the inventory form and about to put a tag on it when I asked if I could see it. Lots and lots of surface rust, looked like it had gotten wet and not been cleaned, barrel looked like a smooth bore, was so fouled. I offered him 175 out the door, he said sold, but I have to get it in the computer. I said no problem, give me the 4473 and I'll fill that out in the meantime. 30 minutes later I'm walking out the door with it and 3 mags still in the plastic, heard the counter guy say "quickest 125 we've ever made". I was thinking, I would've gone 300 easy. Had to replace the mag release spring, two other springs in the action, and a good cleaning. The barrel was my biggest concern but knew both OEM and after market barrels were available. It cleaned up great, first range trip put 70 rounds until a spring broke, 2nd trip, about 20 until the mag spring broke, 3rd trip about 200 before the next spring broke. I just ordered a complete spring kit at that point and took it to my gunsmith. That was 13 years ago and it has been a Timex ever since.

You are right. Antonio Banderas (as El Mariachi) packs matching Ruger KP90s as his main weapons in Desperado. Some say that the film Desperado did more for the popularity of the Ruger P90 than True Lies. The P90 certainly had more scene time in Desperado. Thanks for watching and thanks for the information. It's actually a good question. DC stands for de-cocker, meaning that instead of a safety that also de-cocks the gun, on the DC (de-cocker) version, the lever only de-cocks the gun. Some people prefer that because they don't like a safety. The safety requires the extra step of taking the gun off safety to shoot. Personally, I prefer the safety/de-cocker over the DC version. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching and thanks for the question. Don't forget to like, share and subscribe. If you haven't already, I hope you'll check out my other "Mick Mac" Tabletop Review videos on UA-cam.
I didn’t reference the P90 to the 1995 Antonio Banderas film DESPERADO (which was indeed a great display of the Ruger P series 45s) because actually the guns Banderas uses in Desperado are really the Ruger KP90, not the P90. The K stands for stainless steel. So, technically, the 1994 movie True Lies with Arnold Schwarzenegger & Jamie Lee Curtis is still the best known film for the P90. I know, I'm probably splitting hairs here. ;-) Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. I have 14 other choices but the P-89 in the 9mm is the one that sits next to my pillow. I’ve owned it for almost 30 years and I’ve never had any issue, it’s that reliable, every time every crappy ammunition. It has very lose fitting, like an AK47, in my opinion it is the reason why it never misfires, or has any other issue, it’s just reliable. Would love to buy a few more is possible.
Understood. I have a P-95DC designated for home defense for that same reason. The rail allows for the attachment of a laser/light combo. It's as tough as nails, has action that is as smooth can be, it's comfortable to shoot, has good capacity, its reliably accurate and its never, never failed. If you haven't already, I hope you'll check out my other "Mick Mac" Tabletop Review videos on UA-cam.
Had a magazine catch spring snapped early on my P90DC, Ruger sent the replacement. The hammer has a problem igniting primers in DA but it's a minor issue for a range plinker. What was causing major reliability problems were those +1 CMC followers. Ruger haven't been making the original reliable 7rd followers forever since the "8rd flush" craze swept 1911 world. Fixed the problem by installing Cobramag followers. Not sure where "bullet-proof overbuilt durability" is coming from, the size? The weight? Size makes it large, weight makes it heavy. Not necessarily durable. Soaks up the recoil and makes it slow from holster to target and from target to target. I don't mind the smooth slide, decocker serrations are perfect for slingshooting. Again, since it's plinking only and all. Tried Hogue, it didn't fit. Put a skateboard tape on the front strap, works great.

I love my P-90. Hogue grips, Trijicon sights. I even have an EFK fire dragon dual recoil spring setup if I want to shoot hotter loads. I put ProMag plastic followers and springs in my factory Ruger magazine bodies and they function fine. I do not like the way the de-cocker slams the hammer down ( compared to a Sig-Sauer P 220 de-cocker ) but that is easily mitigated by placing support hand thumb on the hammer and riding down so it does not slam. The de-cocker is a firing pin blocker type so slowing ( thumb ride ) the de-cock down should not affect the safety factor.

Awesome review ,I found one in euc and thinking of buying has exact grips as yours ;) its $500 so not sure if worth it....buuuut I do love the look of the gun for some reason , i love .45 so im on the fence aaaargh !
Ah, I understand your frustration. I love this gun too. The P90 has an average used value of $450 currently (a drop of about $35 in value in the last 12 months). But, its trade-in value is only about $300 now and that doesn't provide much room if your seller bought it at a higher value earlier. Have a P90 DC and find the frame to slide fit is loose. Does not help accuracy. The slop is at front. Possibly a gun smith could slightly tighten the slide. Other than that it is smooth in trigger pull but long. Reliable, but I'd never carry it.

I agree. Holding onto the ambidextrous safety to rack this gun is awkward and uncomfortable. I have a Ruger P95 DC where the serrations are just before the decocker. Much better feel. The ears on safety/decock lever work well in-lieu of serrations and more real estate to grab than serrations. If you absolutely must have serrations, the P345 is for you.

This .45 semi-automatic pistol should be an ideal "self defense/house protection/concealed carry" handgun. Though I'm a revolver person, I would consider this handgun in a flash. An article by Dean Grennell (probably now deceased) in Handguns '93 (1993) titled, "Ruger's Model P90 DC .45 ACP" , has this caption: "Need A Rugged, Reliable, Affordable .45 Auto? Consider This one!", should be of historical inspiring endorsement. Yes the John M. Browning designed Colt Model 1911-A1 Government model has it's advocates. But it may not be ideal for everyone. Perhaps this Ruger P-90 might be a better choice for some. Reason: Perhaps the Ruger P-90 is easier and simpler to field strip and detail clean? I don't really know of course. No.....like any other personal handgun owned by a law abiding voting age citizen (who hopefully is an informed active civic minded voter), this Ruger P-90 .45 Auto should be a real winner. Whether kept inside the nightstand, next to the bed, inside a dresser or bureau drawer, next to a sleeping bag, campfire, or carried inside the glovebox on a long distance road trip on a dark lonely night, this indeed would be very comforting to have! There exists even a .45 Auto shot or "snake load" to kill rattlesnakes and other venomous reptiles. And next to a .22, .32, or .38 Special a .45 Auto can even be utilized to hunt small game such as rabbit, squirrel, and grouse. Or likewise to dispatch vermin: raccoon, skunk, possum, etc. Or even to butcher livestock such as a cow or steer with a head shot. A 9mm Luger Parabellum will also qualify. This would be a good handgun for a long haul trucker, hay hauler, or even a driver of a cattle or livestock truck. Even an armored car guard. James A. "Jim" Farmer Klamath County, Oregon

Yep, given your size and comfort with the larger caliber firearms, the Ruger P90 .45 would be a very good choice and you could probably find one for less than half the cost of a good 1911. Thanks for watching and good luck. Be sure to let me know what you finally choose.
@@mickmacstabletopreviews8466 Well I took the plunge. My local gun shop had a GP100 6' and a Beretta 8045 45acp so I picked both up at a good price. I also ordered a Beretta 96. I will keep an eye out for a P90.

I tried out a P97DC about a year ago. Nice gun. I liked the SA/DA trigger and like my P90, it had a very nice trigger. At $350, I should have bought it but didn't. I sort of regret that. Can't figure out why people are praising this thing. I had one. It was an ugly boat anchor, unremarkable ergonomics and accuracy and the last round of every magazine would get ejected right into my forehead leaving a black semi circle from the case mouth. I didn't know any better, it was my first semi auto pistol. These days I'm a big CZ fan.

I always said if you need a .45 to take to Hell and back, don't care if it is or is not a 1911 series. Can fire near any .45 ACP round that exists as the owner's manual says verbatim: " no 9mm x 19mm, .40 or .45 ACP ammunition manufactured in accordance with SAAMI, CIP, U.S. or NATO standards is known to be beyond the design limits or known not to function in this pistol." In other words, there isn't a .45 ACP round in the case of a P90, P345 SR 45, Redhawk, Super Redhawk with an appropriate cylinder or Blackhawk with an appropriate cylinder that will harm the appropriate firearm. Not as refined as the 1911s, capacity not as high as the Glock 21, FNX, CZ or Para, no S&W ergonomics, no HK or SIG pride of ownership. No visual aethetics It does offer a visual aesthetic all its own. Is combat accurate, will not drive tacks at 50 yards and you can't point it, close your eyes open them and be on target. It will hit a man-sized target center mass, 2 ½ groups at 50 yards or less, more than enough to get the job done
Well said. It is what it is and many believe it's all you need in a 45 --- but what's more, I'm good with it --- and yes, I like it. I acquired one of these about a year ago at a garage sale $400.00, I took it home, cleaned it up, oiled it for what appeared to be the first time in it's life. Enjoyed your video very much. I got my P90 about 15 years ago. I agree with everything you said about it. It's a tank but a reliable one. When you pull the trigger, it shoots. And as far as the 8-round clip, remember; It's a .45, you only have to hit 'em once.

@@dv270salto7 Not if it's a gun they no longer have parts or support for. Their older version PC carbines from the late 90s and early 2000s are an example.
There is a good disassembly video at ua-cam.com/video/eWYTUqgcFhs/v-deo.html
if you want to try to tackle this yourself.
@@mickmacstabletopreviews8466 Ok thanks, I'll try out your suggestions.
Good suggestion! That would certainly make sense. Thanks for taking the time to share your experience.

Amazing story. Thanks for sharing it. My P90 is absolutely one of my best range guns. Great shooting experience every time. Thanks for watching and don't forget to like, share and subscribe. If you haven't already, I hope you'll check out my other "Mick Mac" Tabletop Review videos on UA-cam.

You are right. Antonio Banderas (as El Mariachi) packs matching Ruger KP90s as his main weapons in Desperado. Dependability!
I’m new to the gun game what is the DC version?
It's actually a good question. DC stands for de-cocker, meaning that instead of a safety that also de-cocks the gun, on the DC (de-cocker) version, the lever only de-cocks the gun. Some people prefer that because they don't like a safety. The safety requires the extra step of taking the gun off safety to shoot. Personally, I prefer the safety/de-cocker over the DC version. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching and thanks for the question. Don't forget to like, share and subscribe. Aside from being in the movie True Lies its also El Mariachi's gun in the movie Desperado.

@@mickmacstabletopreviews8466 its true, your information on the gun is on point and informative . very well put together review
Thanks. I'm glad you like the format.
I always told everyone down-range when they wondered why I was carrying my big bulky & ugly that it was the AK-47 of Pistols. I miss that weapon.
Understood. You are not alone in your regret of having sold or traded a Ruger P series pistol off. That's especially true for the P90. It may not be pretty, but what a heck of a weapon!

Indeed a great 45. Thanks for the feedback and thanks for watching. If you haven't already, I hope you'll check out my other "Mick Mac" Tabletop Review videos on UA-cam.

I also have the same grips on mine, my dads friend is a gun smith, he reworked the trigger and put the same grips on it for me, all i had to do was buy him a 6 pack, can't find friendships like that anymore.(edit he did that for a lot of my rifles/firearms, something like 12 of them)

I have smaller hands and my p90 with Hogue grip is easy for me to Fire accurately. Excellent weapon. And you could knock somebody’s block off if you ran out of ammo.

Perhaps offering something in-between (like $475) might work for you. Good luck. Thanks for watching and thanks for the positive comment. Don't forget to like, share and subscribe. @@mickmacstabletopreviews8466 Thanks brother appreciate reply and info, Im gonna buy its just a cool gun to have in collection ,def check out rest of your vids ;)
Yep, I'd probably do the same. Close enough on price and it's there.
Have a P90 DC and find the frame to slide fit is loose. Does not help accuracy. The slop is at front. Possibly a gun smith could slightly tighten the slide. Other than that it is smooth in trigger pull but long. Reliable, but I'd never carry it.

I just bought stainless steel Ruger p90 for $370.00 dollars dare any one find double single action old school in 45acp in stainless steel for that price. I feel very lucky price on Ruger p90 keep going up.
Ah yes, the stainless steel Ruger KP90. Outstanding! Made even more popular in the 1995 Antonio Banderas film DESPERADO. And what a great price! You did very, very well. I'm sure this same Ruger P-90 .45 semi-auto would stand up to the sub-zero Arctic freezing environment of the Alaskan or Siberian wilderness. Especially if carried concealed beneath a heavy insulated winter coat or parka. ---Jim Farmer

The only thing I don't like is the lack of slide serrations. Makes it kind of hard to chamber..... especially of your hands are wet or cold.
I agree. Holding onto the ambidextrous safety to rack this gun is awkward and uncomfortable. I have a Ruger P95 DC where the serrations are just before the decocker. Much better feel. Ruger could have done the same with the P90. Thanks for watching and thanks for the comment. Don't forget to like, share and subscribe. The ears on safety/decock lever work well in-lieu of serrations and more real estate to grab than serrations. If you absolutely must have serrations, the P345 is for you.
My grandad has a p90 and he loves the thing to death had it almost 15 years now

This .45 semi-automatic pistol should be an ideal "self defense/house protection/concealed carry" handgun. Though I'm a revolver person, I would consider this handgun in a flash. An article by
Dean Grennell (probably now deceased) in Handguns '93 (1993) titled, "Ruger's Model P90 DC .45 ACP" , has this caption: "Need A Rugged, Reliable, Affordable .45 Auto?

Hmm... now I have another choice to consider... :)

Can fire near any .45 ACP round that exists as the owner's manual says verbatim:
" no 9mm x 19mm, .40 or .45 ACP ammunition manufactured in accordance with SAAMI, CIP, U.S. or NATO standards is known to be beyond the design limits or known not to function in this pistol." In other words, there isn't a .45 ACP round in the case of a P90, P345 SR 45, Redhawk, Super Redhawk with an appropriate cylinder or Blackhawk with an appropriate cylinder that will harm the appropriate firearm.
Not as refined as the 1911s, capacity not as high as the Glock 21, FNX, CZ or Para, no S&W ergonomics, no HK or SIG pride of ownership. No visual aethetics
It does offer a visual aesthetic all its own.
Finally acquired one of my own recently so I'll be doing an update review on the P90. Stay tuned. Thanks for watching and thanks for taking the time to comment.
