It's because nobody has any choice.
Homelander has all the power and she's literally the only person on the board who has even a hope of hurting him.
We see her training in the first season. That's for Homelander. No one else. Her crime fighting is mostly staged.
Maeve may not have a hope, the blood she drew against Homelander might've been superficial. She may die the same way she did in the comics thinking a sword might work. But she'll be righteous when she picks it up. Right now though? They're all insane if they think the cavalry would ever show up. This particular world is a mirror, and the government rarely arbitrates disputes between world powers on a civil level and make no mistake, Homelander is a world power. He's an asset as much as a liability. The world would bend for that kind of power.
And they're asking her to give up her one shot on the legal system.
I'm normally all for that but Homelander presents such a complicated case it would never work. At the very best, they'd try to put him in a cage before the real fight began... and then it'd be Maeve, maybe the remaining vought lineup and the government... but really, just Maeve.
And brass tax, she can't fly. She can't fire lasers. Strategically nobody can beat those two things in combination.
Hughie is not their best hope. They need strength to have options here. They need power and Hughie is next to nothing. "Goodness" is a wonderful thing, but she needs, "more" and nobody seems to get that.
She's laser focused on the task at hand and nobody else is even talking about the real problem.
And they were unbearably stupid to text. They have no idea the level of tracing Vought does. Homelander knows about that text. If he even cares. She kicked them out because Homelander is likely floating a mile up listening and laughing. The less they say the better. Anything committal and he'll come down just to spite them.
... and starlight is throwing around someone she loves callously and it makes her sick, because she knows better than anyone. Few people have survived to see Homelander up close for any given period of time.
They aren't ready and are acting like children.
He is just firewood. They couldn't even stand up to her verbally.
She was testing them and they didn't just fail, they didn't even fight.
She needs heroes, not plucky advocates. At worst, she needs savages.
I'm all for working the system, that's a road they could've gone. But they aren't. They go for leverage. They should be afraid.
I really like Maeve's character in general.

Hughie could be doing so much more for himself and everyone else, just making sure everything they do is publicized would go a long way. But even Hughie is at a loss... and he's the one who represents, "the good".
When she told him, "I could crack it like firewood" he should've said, "but I'd like to anyway, because you're one of the good ones, and if you're not, we're fucked".
But they don't really know that yet. They don't really see she's a hostage just like them.
It's a good show, Maeve gets a lot of hate but she acts the most rational of anyone on the show... and she's the only one who even has a dream of freedom. She's got the most to lose, because she has hope, and that's a brutal thing to have and to risk. She's got a lot to lose in this equation...
And they freaking texted.
I'd be mad too.
They aren't even close to serious yet. She walked all over them because they had no stones to deal with the reality, they're living in a fairy tale. Even she is, she's in a costume she doesn't even have time to get out of.
Starlight hasn't even begun any real training, Hughie can't even speak for himself yet.

Girl, there are plenty of people when they are “Tired” don’t put down other people for no fucking reason just to make themselves feel better and then scream like a child when they don’t do exactly what you say the second you say it.
This is why I don’t like Maeve it’s heavy implied throughout the show maeve has not always been a good person and I don’t know why so many people feel sympathy for her regarding the elena relationship. It’s very much implied from their first scenes dialogue maeve treated her like she was probably worthless to only come back into her life now “go back to your Ivory penthouse where you can drink and fuck whoever you want” she’s not a very good girlfriend at all,and she undermined starlight’s assault in the elevator claiming she must love the attention.
Also the fact she hates skinny men for no reason and calls them “Twinks”
i feel sympathy towards her because i feel like she’s always had this sense of hopelessness and treated everyone around her like garbage because she feels trapped with homelander existing. she has been very aware how fucked up he is and has been terrified of him felt like she could never really get too close to anyone because he might do something to them. she knows that he is basically unstoppable and hearing starlight and hughie trying to stand up against vought all she could think of is how they’re getting themselves killed. i think she especially dislikes hughie because all the rebellion shit basically started when he showed up and again she thinks in her head that it’s suicide because she had no hope. i could be wrong but i really feel like that’s why shes such an asshole most of the time because it feels impossible to be a good person when someone so evil and powerful is basically controlling everything and one wrong move could get someone killed or even everyone killed if you push enough buttons.
