In the subtitles for the "black choreographers" segment, the name Geoffrey Holden is displayed. That should be Geoffrey Holder, with an R at the end. Pretty sure Shirley said it correctly, just hard to hear. She had a right to be a bit winded. Fabulous dancing.
For those who didn't know, MacLaine got her big Broadway break as a chorus dancer in Pajama Game, when she understudied Carol Haney. Haney was famous for never missing a show…until she did. Shirley went on, and a star was born. Sounds like a movie plot but absolutely true.

What impresses me the most is her discipline. It was clear that she wouldn't much need her dancing skills in her 40s but she still maintened that physique which allowed her to do this presentation. I mean she couldn't know she would do this presentation, first she maintened the physique and then someone offered her to film this. Apart from that she was just working out and stretching on a regular basis in order to stay this fit. Just wow, what a will power.

I always felt that movie was some of the best dancing Hollywood ever did, and Shirley was the star of it. I hope you enjoy it! Shirley was a dancer before she was ever a Hollywood actress - she originally wanted to be a ballet dancer, but she got too tall. I always admired, though, that she gracefully slid into acting, and never tried to fight the progress of time. She always found roles that suited her as she aged and she excelled in all of them!

She is so far from racist; she was simply showcasing choreographers/choreographic styles in terms they used at that time period. It doesn't play well in today's time but this was 40 years ago.

I LOVE Shirley MacLaine!!! I met her in 1975 when I bought her book "You Can Get There From Here'" . She was VERY nice. I talked to her for about 10 minutes after everyone else left the store. Then I saw her in concert in 1984 in San Francisco. GREAT SHOW!!!!!!!

I loved her in "What a Way To Go". She danced in that one too. The whole movie was a blast...showing off all her talents with some of the biggest male stars at the time: Gene Kelly, Robert Mitchum, Paul Neuman, Dick Van Dyke, Dean Martin.......But my all-time favorite Shirley McClain movie is "The Apartment". Great actress!

Maclaine was because she is such a damn good actress as well.. but this performance from 1980 when she was 46 is such a tour de force ... thank God for UA-cam to remind us!
