    A fantastic watch for a frustrated armchair mechanic. The stop motion is pure genius. And the velvety Irish brogue completes the experience. Thanks George.

    I've done quite a bit of welding & repairing old cars (mainly P6 Rovers) & I can only say I'm mystified why the O/S would rust worse, but it does always seem to be the way. This is a RHD country as well b.t.w. Great channel George, thanks.

    So within the last week i made it through all your episodes and just a few weeks ago i started my own project car which is my BMW E36 Compact, my very first car that deserves to be saved, i won't say that you got me started because that'd be a lie but you helped me get going again, last weekend the driver behind me was distracted and slammed into the rear of my Summer daily (2005 Ford Focus) so my motivation dropped below zero but i found this channel through Engines and unfinished businesses and you got me going again on a slower pace than before but i did some stuff. so thank you so much for your videos without them i would still be sitting around and freaking out about the accident. greetings from Austria

    Ever considered becoming an inspirational speaker? :) Seriously, this was great progress and I think that your front-end work was quite good for being "temporary". I really don't think you would need to replace it considering your growing skillset!

    • @soupclassicmotoring
      @soupclassicmotoring  5 років тому +2

      The body should have come off the chassis from the get go, that's a mistake I'll never make again. Whatever about the strength of it, the paint and prep just can't be done as well as I'd like with the car in one piece. Don't know about becoming a speaker... although I'll happily bend the ear of anyone who stumbles into my trap ;)

    Great work, George.
    Plans to replace the panels with new within a few years will almost certainly get stretched out - these things always do. But it looks like you have done the repairs to such a standard as it won't matter - I reckon you'll get a good 15-20 years out of them as long as you get some cavity wax onto the back of the bulkhead repairs and a decent layer of paint in the voids below the battery trays.

    My mum used to have an old mini, which she'd park on the road, always facing the same way - driver's side to the pavement. She did this for years.
    The passenger side, always facing the road, developed severe rust along the bottom of the whole side there due to the cars passing and splashing the rain and grit. The driver's side was relatively spotless.
    So it may be that the driver's side on yours is just more exposed to the road and when driving and therefore is rustier?
    Just a thought.

    • @soupclassicmotoring
      @soupclassicmotoring  5 років тому +3

  • @markjaffrey
    @markjaffrey 5 років тому

    George - you're a miracle worker! Your motivation levels must be at an all time high - this is just brilliant stuff, and the stop motion welding footage is excellent. Driving it yet?? I suppose I'll have to wait just a little longer :-)
    I've been away for work for a couple of weeks, but before I went I had the wheels refurbed on the Vitesse and new Firestones fitted. The drive home from the wheel shop was fabulous until the exhaust started blowing a couple of miles from home! Boring Honda passed its MOT with no advisories, so that's something. My RR vogue has a small leak from the rad, somewhere - there's a tiny column of steam from the front grille at the end of every journey but I'm going to ignore it for now, and get busy changing the engine and diff oils instead - let's hope it makes it to Anglesey and back over Easter.

    • @soupclassicmotoring
      @soupclassicmotoring  5 років тому

      Motivation is tough right now Mark, the biggest test right at the last hurdle. Have found some brutal rust I just never noticed before... how could there still be a rusty area?? Don't leave that pin hole too long, if it drops the boiling point of your coolant it could toast your head gasket!

    • @markjaffrey
      @markjaffrey 5 років тому

      @@soupclassicmotoring Your thoughts about the pin-hole in the rad got me thinking that perhaps you're right and I should get it sorted. I was worried about the oil cooler and autobox cooler built in to the rad - I expect yours is the same - and how that would make it complex and expensive but I've found one for below £200 so I expect I shall be getting on with that very soon. Main job right now is to find out why it's reluctant to start and why it's running a bit rough all of a sudden.
      I'm sorry about the nasty rust hiding under the Decker panel - and all the usual front-end decay. But it is the last big push and you're so inventive and resourceful George - you'll crack it!

    Hi George, this is going to sound a bit crazy but I just spent the weekend in Edinburgh at a conference and ended up sitting beside this great guy named Hadleigh. We got chatting and ended up realising that we had a love of cars and bikes in common. He told me about your channel {which is fantastic btw}and the Lotus and how much of a great guy you were but the craziest thing was when he told me where you lived it turned out to be less than 20 miles south of me. He said to reach out to link up with you and that he was going to do the same to pass on my contact details He reckons we would get on really well and that you might like some of the projects I have on the go. Maby the driver side is worse because the driver is more often than the passenger opening and closing the door in bad weather? And that's why it has more rust? I'm only guessing 😃 Thanks for all your videos. They are great 😃👍

    The vehicle picks up more spray from oncoming traffic on the driver's side, road grit sent flying up, etc. It's common in North America too for there to be more rust on the driver's side than the passenger side.

    • @soupclassicmotoring

    Well done sir. I think you under estimate your repair effectiveness. Those repairs are top notch. I love your videos especially the time lapse stuff, but that must be a pain in the rear. I hear that making UA-cam videos and repairing cars causes twice the amount of time to be spent than it would normally take (I think this is for a well oiled routine and would be more like 3 or 4 times to start out with) But time lapse? that must take at least 10 times the amount of time / work. I really appreciate it because it is such an awesome effect. And remember the old joke " There was a meeting of car companies to discuss future developments, there was BMW, Maserati and British Leyland. They were talking about their quality checks and the BMW guy said (in a German accent) ve test our qvality by putting a cat inside ze car for 20 minutes and after if ze cat is dead zen ve know all of ze seals are air tight and ze test is passed. The Maserati guy then said (in an Italian accent with much waving of arms) we also testa our cars this waya after 1 hour if the cat is deada then we know all of the seals are gooda. The British Leyland guy then says (in a brumy accent) we also do this test, after 10 minutes if the cat is still inside the car then we know it's good enough". Those gaps are perfect, they are called ventilation gaps and stop condensation. Thumbs up.

    • @soupclassicmotoring
      @soupclassicmotoring  5 років тому +1

      😂That sounds about right. About the stop motion and the extra time. The process is fine for some jobs, ones where there are a lot of repetitive movements and where I don't have to fight with the camera for real estate. But when it's awkward, it's crazy time consuming. When I split the Esprit engine from the box and got the engine onto the stand... it took 8 hours. I could do that in half an hour if I was just working normally.

    Bloody great video as per usual Sir. :)
    On the more driver's side rust G, maybe it's because the car was parked up with the driver's side near a wall or similar? I have had similar with my 90's Honda(actual rust magnets from new) the passenger side requires little but inspection and reapplication of anti rust goo in the summer in places where it's likely to form. The driver side is parked near to a low wall and though the car is more wax than steel :) I had to do a small bit of welding to the sill on that side. Well I didn't, I got in a pro, as the emergency services of Dublin have enough to be dealing with.

    I have to say your welding with the flux-cored wire is an inspiration, especially since you're not even using a top end welder. You now make the thin metal welding look easy. I am tempted to buy a roll of flux core just to give it another go, and get some practise in for when I need to weld in windy conditions. Which brand of wire do you use?

    • @soupclassicmotoring
      @soupclassicmotoring  5 років тому

      You can get a decent result, no doubt, my welds are affected by the stop motion process, they could be prettier. For €100 that welder is a no brainer I reckon. That said I'm not touching the Esprit chassis with it. The wire is Sureweld I think, I buy the big rolls now and they last ages so it's been a while since I saw the packaging.

      Hi I've spent some time searching but I can't find the file I'm sorry. I got it from the youtube audio library though so you could have a look. Thanks :)

    How much time does doing the stop motion add? Could you have done this in a year instead of 3 if you weren't entertaining us so well?

      Maybe not one, but definitely two years. Who knows. It's really time consuming for some processes and then not intrusive for others, or can sometimes even help. Like stopping to trigger the camera when welding can lend time to cool.

      Its worth the effort to watch anyway. I struggle to not kick the camera over and tie myself in knots with the mic lead when I try and work and film!

      @@furiousdriving I kick the camera regularly, it's the bain of my day because it ruins nice stop motion sequences.
