Describing SNU students as the top 1% is technically misleading.

      I’m sorry but 0.0075% is a bit exaggerated…
We Koreans can only apply to 6 University each year. And Seoul University 경쟁률(Competition rate) ranks 18 (14,108 applicants, 2056 received acceptance).
While Chung-ang University received the most applicants (60,836 app, 2,093accepted) making it the university with highest competition rate/ lowest acceptance rate in South Korea…
Most students who applied to Top University in Seoul are Top1%(1등급 or A+) student. Since we are graded in curve(only certain percentage of student can receive an A grade). And to have a good grades in 수능(CSAT) if we will apply in regular admission 정시. + Interview and Essay.
Also, the difficulty is depends on major…and 의대(medical school) is the most desirable. But in terms of prestige and research output. Indeed Snu is number 1 in Korea.
But our University in korea is ranked depends on tradition.
(Major, Prestige, Alumni’s impact in S.K)
      (In Seoul)
      1. Snu
      2. Yonsei=Korea U
      3. Sogang=Sungkyunkwan=Hanyang
      4. Chung-ang=Kyunghee= Hufs= Uni of Seoul
Universities outside of Seoul are often looked down upon. But Kaist and Postech have an exception in terms of Engineering and Technology outputs.

@@icedquadlatte don’t be discouraged.😊 Foreigners have high acceptance rate compared to local students. As some University wants to maintain international student ratio to have a good competition in world ranking.😉
My advice is prepare your documents as early as possible. (Diploma, transcript of record, bank statement[proof that you’re financially capable to live/ study in a foreign country], visa, essay, TOEFL/TOPIK, and if I’m not mistaken interview and other requirements are depends on University like SAT scores or recommendations letter).
+ choose your major wisely (I recommend to choose a University/major that offers most of the classes in English)
+ Learn Korean language (it’s important coz language barrier is real)

Remember that getting into a University is not about obtaining the education that they provide. Yes the professors that work. There can have high credentials and have a lot of information but the connections and the networking that the University provides as part of status of their connections with higher entities

Right on. And also, entering a prestigious university but not knowing how to use all its resources to your advantage basically does nothing to your grade(and can even worsen them). For instance, some people shy away from approaching lecturers and hence, lose their chance to get useful tips and advice

Yes, I’m a korean and this is true…. Graduating in prestigious universities help to advance in career because of “Alumni Connections.” Some employer prefer those who graduated “In Seoul.” And the prestige is depends on Alumni which makes the SKY(Snu,Korea U, Yonsei) the most influential one for producing politicians and CEOs. + These Universities are always mentioned in national television influencing most parents and students’s desire to be accepted there. Which means getting accepted there could secure our career and future.

Edit: Notification reminded me. There are two exceptions to this rule: KAIST and POSTECH. These are the top 2 tech universities in the country. If you graduate from either of these in a tech field (engineering, computer science, robotics, etc.), it's equivalent to getting a degree from a SKY university.

    In South Korea,
There is a long-standing tradition of ingrained university rankings only unique to Koreans,
    Almost like a customary practice.
This ranking takes into account only campuses located in Seoul.
    1st tier
    Seoul National University
    1.5th tier
    Yonsei University / Korea University
    2nd tier
Sungkyunkwan University / Hanyang University / Sogang University
    3rd tier
Chung-Ang University / Kyung Hee University / Hankuk University of Foreign Studies / University of Seoul
If you are a foreigner and wish to study in Korea as an exchange student, I recommend the following universities:
(The following universities are ranked within the top 500 in the world according to the 2023 QS university evaluation.)
    Seoul National University(41)
    Yonsei University(76)
    Korea University(79)
    Sungkyunkwan University(145)
    Hanyang University (164)
    Kyung Hee University(332)
    Chung-Ang University(494)

This is not true and you are very mislead by this nonsense. I have known many people getting accepted into our best schools in the USA and all of them came from a poor background. A man by the name Angel Acala of the Philippines went to Harvard and is now the one of Philippines top scientist in marine biology. I got to live with the man, he's awesome. It's not a system problem it's a YOU problem. Quit blaming your status and everything around you, sound like a woman. Geez if it makes you feel better another man came from China as a poor man and graduated top of his class and also an African man who is now an educator, his degree was scientist. So stop. Germany allows anyone to come study in their top schools and pay for it, Cuba also educates poor people freely. I can go in of the various countries that do this but you do the research yourself.

u would need to count in that SK's economy in general is pretty legit already. There would be Samsung (whose profit only generate more than the entire Kpop industry), LG, Lotteria,... top companies in SK look for top grads in SK univs. Furthermore, it is undeniable about the quality of global name like Harvard, YALEs, Oxford,... but do remember English is the most spoken language in the world, so more popularity is also guaranteed, also pop culture helps.
