    great video. rather frustrating to see that af in video mode is better on the a7rii. as the a7sii was aimed more at the video shooter and the a7rii was aimed at the photographer. i guess greedy sony want you to get both! for me the low-light and slo-mo are still important factors wins for the a7sii. but overall the a7rii wins

    Great comparison and video. Thank you for sharing! I'd say the A7RII wins hands down. With RII even in low light, you can crop down to Super35 and get the same performance as the SII. The RII autofocus seals the deal for me...

    Very good comparison, thanks!
    Obviously Sony decreased the resolution for 120 fps to create a confusion between two cameras, or else who would get the A7s II other than anyone looking for extreme low light conditions?
    Anyone who is shooting professional video, let's say film makers would control the lighting conditions artificially if need be in most* conditions..

    Thanks for the great job on comparisons. In my opinion Sony has purposely handcuffed the a7RII. It's clear that in Super35 mode, the a7RII is capable of doing better than 25,600 ISO. I believe the reason for this is so that they can further differentiate the cameras. Seems to me the BSI sensor should have been included in the a7SII but something went wrong, and they needed more time.
    They definitely shouldn't be charging $3000 for the a7SII, when the a7RII is only $200 more for a huge upgrade from a7R.

    • @MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons
      @MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons  8 років тому +1

      +Luke Tek On the A7r II, the ISO values higher than 25600 are extended (push) and not native. I guess that is the reason they aren't available in video mode.

    My question is this. If I need one of these for wedding videography. which is the best choice. I would be shooting in conditions where sometimes I have to shoot ISO max 2000 and would need a camera with the best autofocus tracking for moving objects. I am inclined to the A7R2 since most of my clients won't need the 4K, and I cal occasionally use it to take pictures when the need be. But I am a bit worried about over heating issues. Does the A7R2 overheats when shooting 1080 in FF or super 35 mode?

    You said the bitrate is significantly lower when using HFR rather than standard 120p movie mode. Is that bitrate lower than 80% of what the normal 120p movie mode is? Considering, when using a higher framerate, then conforming the footage in post-production, the bitrate is cut by however much the video is slowed down by. Important to remember this.
    I think I read that the A7sII does 120p in either 100Mbps or 60Mbps. I'm assuming the 100 is standard movie mode, and the 60 is HFR. If this is the case, it seems that the HFR mode would yield better end results, if the bitrate is a resulting 60Mbps, where as after conforming 120p to 24p, the bitrate would be sub-20Mbps. Or something like that. However, if it is the STARTING bitrate that is 60Mbps in HFR mode, then you are absolutely right, the normal movie mode option would be the way to go. Hopefully someone might be able to elaborate on this. (I'm not claiming to be right or wrong here.)

    • @MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons
      @MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons  8 років тому

      100mbps and 60mbps are in normal movie mode. With HFR you get 16 or 12mbps depending on the final frame rate.

  • @CliveSwabyJr

    This video helped a lot thank you. I was only confused about one thing (this is more so a technical question so if anyone knows help me out here) why is it that the A7RII had better low light performance in APS-C mode, I was of the understanding that cameras that have full frame sensors capture more light, so why would putting the camera in a mode for a smaller sensor improve the low light performance?

    • @MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons
      @MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons  7 років тому +1

      Because in APS-C mode it uses 18MP only and does full pixel readout meaning it uses all the pixels in the APS-C area without skipping any of them (so no aliasing, more details and precise footage). In full frame mode, despite having 42MP, it doesn't use all the pixels for video but still has to deal with more than 18MP. With video, the more megapixel you have, the more noise you get at high ISO.

    What would you recommend for Filming Events (weddings primarily)? R2 or S2? I tend to use autofocus more. I see that the R2 is hunting more than the S2 so if it offer a smoother transition than I guess it would be better for the viewers to see things out of focus for 2 seconds than to see 1 second of going back and forth hunting. Also better low light would be cooler. But I want your honest opinion. I need to shoot a lot and preferably uninterrupted (except when hitting re-record after 29 minutes). Subject are mainly sitting still in the chapel and I hope the camera doesn't focus on the people at the back instead of the people at the front (bride and groom) and S-log is really nice since harsh sun through the windows can ruin a scene. Also I shoot on a shoulder rig so that I don't get tired after some hours (that + the stabilization should work great) and I also do close up shots or detail shots so I can inter-cut with them.

    • @MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons
      @MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons  7 років тому

      The A7r II is faster concerning the AF but it won't be perfect especially in low light. The problem for video is that you can't use AF-S but only AF-C or MF. With AF-C the camera will likely try to hunt for something most of the time. At a wedding I would use MF personally, at least indoor or in low light.
      The A7s II is better in low light and it does full pixel readout in full frame mode.
      The A7r II is perhaps more versatile because you have the full frame and super35 option in 4K (the A7s II has super35 only in 1080p). So you can take advantage of wide angle lenses in full frame mode and have more telephoto reach in Super35 mode (but remember that the best ISO performance with the A7r II is in Super35 mode, in full frame mode there is lots of noise).

    • @ToastedSynapseGaming
      @ToastedSynapseGaming 7 років тому

      Mathieu Gasquet Got it, thank you. MF is really not an option for me as I often have to go into crowded spaces and worry about my surroundings or I have to boom the whole rig up so that I get a shot of what's happening over somebody's head so I really hope that one of these cameras would do the trick

    • @MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons
      @MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons  7 років тому

      +Toasted Synapse Gaming if you are not in a hurry, another option would be to wait for the new a6500 (APS-C): same AF system of the a6300, which is the fastest among Sony cameras and you have 5-axis IBIS as well. Apparently Sony also fixed the overheating issue but it's better to wait for complete reviews to make sure of that.

    • @ToastedSynapseGaming
      @ToastedSynapseGaming 7 років тому

      Mathieu Gasquet Thank you. I was thinking about doing this. The fact that it's not FF wouldn't bother me too much. With the extra money I can get more lenses. I'll see the reviews and look for that low light test and AF system.

      I only use the slog 2 function frequently and am aware of its noise. I've realised that since i'm in Australia, PAL is the main format - it introduces grain and removes the 30fps recording option.

      Thanks for reply.Why only in video mode?

    • @MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons
      @MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons  7 років тому +2

      in video mode, the A7r II does full pixel readout in APS-C mode. It means it uses all pixels (18MP in APS-C mode) to create the video. In full frame mode, it does line skipping which means not all the pixels are used: as a result there is some gap between each pixel used to create the video which means more aliasing (details are less sharp) and more noise at high ISO.

    Salut !
    Super review vraiment, clair et précise ! J'ai une petite question, j'aimerai upgrade mon setup en m'achetant le A7s II ( j'ai un 6300 ). Je fais uniquement du film, principalement sport et montagne, tu me le conseille ?
    Merci de ta réponse au plaisir ! :)

    • @MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons
      @MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons  7 років тому +1

      Le A7s II est conçu pour la vidéo principalement. Ses deux points forts sont:
      - le 4K avec capteur plein format, utile si tu as des objectifs plein formats, surtout des grands angles que tu veux utiliser avec leurs angles de vue originels
      - la sensibilité à ISO élevé (bruit bien contenu jusqu'à 25600, utilisable jusqu'à 51200 ou meme 102400 en cas de besoin extreme).
      Il y aussi moins de risque de surchauffement avec le A7s II quand tu enregistre en 4K, il y a une entrée micro et sortie jack et la possibilité d'un battery pack pour prolonger la durée des batteries.

      Merci de votre réponse rapide, et de ces précision !
      Dernier question au niveau des objectifs plein formats, tu a quelques conseils, nom d'objectifs a conseillé ? Qui selon toi irait parfetement avec le sony a7s ii ?

      They can both do great, I think it's a matter of choosing between having the best quality in full frame mode (A7s II) or in Super35mm/APS-C mode (A7r II).

    Just want to share this short film titled "What Am I Doing?" - I shot the film on the Sony A7Rii (minus some drone shots).
    vimeo.com/245405363
    I used old Canon FD lenses for all the interior shots and for the water scenes I used the 35mm Sony / Carl Zeiss lens since it was the only auto focus lens that would fit in the underwater housing we had. I constantly switched back and forth from fullframe / super 35 mode - which is what I love about the A7Rii.
    The whole film was shot using only natural light. For the interior scenes I mostly exposed from the window since that was my source of light. Because I created the look mostly in camera, it made color grading pretty hard...I used a custom color profile - one which I'm not sure if I would use again because the a lot of footage came out very purple-y... maybe it's from the old canon glass?

      Lovely video Michael. Not sure about the purple tint but certain old glasses can produce a more visible colour shift.

    J'ai lu presque tous les commentaires et si je comprend bien avec le S2 en 1080p il y a un crop de x2.2?? Donc meme ma lentille 8mm fisheye va me donner un resultat de environ 18mm a l'image?? C'est un peu se foutre de nos gueules ahahah!
