There's just something special of ASMR of People just ramble about their lives before 2000. I think it's because i love listening stories specifically from that time, and honestly i kind of hope i had lived at that time. Also ER, if you happen to read this, i'd like to thank you. Your videos really relax and give little happiness to my days.

I am fiftythree now and grew up in the suburbs of Frankfurt in Germany. I also lived in a row house with a lot of families around. As kids, I would say, we had a lot of freedom. Compared to nowadays I consider it as a great luxury to have had that leisure time back then in the 70s 80s. I think what we have to learn again from the old days is to endure or even more enjoy times of boredom. With our digital dictators in our hands we lost that feeling, we are even trying to avoid any kind of time with nothing to do, just being alone with ourselves. Seems we cannot stand ourselves anymore. So that’s why we all need some ASMR to reach a calm state of mind again.
So you’re right, this cherishing of the old days might be a little bit cynical. So I will stop now.
I made 100% the same experiences as you did In my childhood.
But anyhow, times are a changing, and I still have a good feeling for the future of my kids. It’s their lives, so let them rock it.
Grew up in the 90s. We were literally always outside. That’s the biggest difference I see between generations. Interestingly, things weren’t actually safer in the 80s and 90s than they are today.

I was born in 2000 but I’ve always loved hearing people who grew up in the 70’s-80’s. And hearing Uncle E talking about it is a real treat 😊

I was born in 2006, I turned 17 in May
I'll be 50 next month. Grew up in rural Texas. We would ride our bikes or skateboards to get around town to go play/hang out with other kids. Walking the tracks to hang out with kids outside the city. Hunting things with your BB gun. Building clubhouses with random boards or logs. A rope and an old tire was a swing. Picking dewberries on fence lines or railroad tracks. We would go fishing in cow ponds. Building half pipes in our back yard. You could catch a ride with your neighbor. I remember when we got a Mc Donald's. I grew up with no AC in the schools. They didn't get AC until I was a freshman in High School. I remember getting my feet measured to have patent leather shoes made by FAO Schwartz for school. I had school shoes,church shoes, and weekend shoes. I remember when girls started wearing jeans. Lee jeans were the most popular. I remember reading the comics on Sunday Morning. Using Silly Putty on the comics to pick up the pictures. I remember when MTV came out. We listened to tons of Elvis on records in the house. My dad bought me the Thriller album with a new red record player for my room. Recording all the songs on cassette tapes to make playlists for your boom box. Remembering like two dozen phone numbers in your head to dial on a rotary phone. Playing Tombstone on the first computers. Nintendo game system. My parents divorced when I was 11. I was working and helping with bills by the time I was 14 with a hardship driver's license. That was the end of my childhood. And the end of an era. Tech took over everything and everyone so fast that it's a blur.
I am LOVING this kind of content. Listening to you discuss and tell stories is incredibly relaxing.
I was born in the 90s and I can remember a time specifically like you are talking about, as far as the changing point, as a millennial who grew up besides consumer technology/social media, I think about 2008-2010s was really when it changed, when smartphones became readily available and MySpace became less cool and everyone was switching to Facebook. That was the time when everyone and their mother was moving to social media and Netflix became popular and the whole binge watching of true crime became more mainstream. We could also point to the sensationalism of the serial killers of the 70s and 80s during the 90s, 9-11, Y2K and all the Apocalyptic prophesies, and columbine/all school shootings. Honestly though I think it’s just the degradation of western society which I could really get into but I would rather stop here and try to keep this alittle polarizing as possible
Grew up in the 90s and early 2000s. I look back at those times fondly and with a warm heart and appreciation. I feel like everything from colors to the taste of food was better back then. We millenials have seen a great transition into the digital age and we will be the last to remember it. We are also the last to have had old school parents. Today is a more.. hmm.. rushed time then back then. It feels meaningless and soulless at times. It also seems like people are much more stressed and that people in general have simply gotten dumber. Cities are more crowded, and smartphones rule our lives. Who knows what the future holds. All the best.
I don’t think kids today are bored and honestly that’s the problem. There’s so much stimulation they don’t get a chance to actually just be bored with no distractions and then use their imagination, create something.
Many people have already mentioned it, but hearing your stories is so cozy and heartwarming to me.
The 70s-80s generation is unfortunately slowly fading away, and those memories seem like a distant time that you can only see in your dreams. A better, simpler time in many ways (of course, there were also a lot of problems, but this is a safe space - we can ignore those).
By sharing your experiences with the new generation, and through a permanent medium such as UA-cam, you are basically archiving the old days and breathing new life into them, not letting them be forgotten.
I wish I could go back in time and live with my parents and grandparents while they were still young. I love them so much, but our generational differences, and the difficulty of life in the 21st century, are keeping me from spending as much time as I want with them.
I know these comments have been overwhelmingly positive and I agree. Listening to stories of any kind with a lazy, rambling pace is amazing. Keep it up!

I don't know how to explain but the synth/electro and disco-pop music scene from the 70's and 80's predicted a future that was way more futuristic than the future we got.
Paul, love the low budget, back to basics videos. Started watching when I was 13 years old back in 2012, and I feel like I’ve grown up with you! Always loved when you would just sit and talk with us. Keep it up and hope the family is doing well.
This reminds me of the stories my grandparents/ parents used to tell me with the vivid detail and passion just rambling about the past and I absolutely love it, I love this series and am so glad it's going on like a soft-spoken podcast
I don't really have anybody in my life that I can ask about stories of growing up like this, so being able to listen to stories like you're putting out is really cool and unique to me. I really dig these.
my dad grew up around the same time though I think he's a few years older than you. He also grew up in Pennsylvania and what he told me the biggest differences in society from the 70/80's to today is
1. everyone would smoke anywhere and everywhere
2. people were just nicer and more caring for others but tougher mentally (for the most part).
3. You could really go anywhere bc it was simple to get around places and not as many people in general

These podcast types that ER does are my favorite. It's so nice to hear his POV about certain topics and listen to him telling interesting stories or share wisdom regarding mental health.

I love gearing about the true experiences of the 1980’s/1990’s
I’m a 2005 kid, but I was raised in a “vintage style” so I always take an interest in knowing how similar my own experiences were, even if not the same (hell I’ve still got my old Polaroid somewhere in my room to this day) memories.
Im in the exact same boat im also a 2005 kid, and although i was born in toronto, grew up from under a year old in a small ontario town. I grew up the way previous generations had, being in a small town, as well as being a major old head and car enthusiast since under a year old. Ive never felt connected to people my age (i didnt even have a game console till i bought the last year of xbox360 with my own money, let alone a phone) and thats a great contrast to others who had electronics very young let alone the age group below mine who had phones since 3 years old on average! Since i grew up more offline, i tend to relate alot more to my parents age group and older when describing childhoods. (My parents werent even old or anything, being born in 1984 and 1986 respectfully, although also "growing up the old way") due to this i tend to get along much better with older people and find school especially unpleasent and tend to get picked on for being "mature for my age" according to the adults, or "weird" according to other kids.
@@greentintgaming821dude, this sounds like me but slightly more “modern”. I grew up in a town of ~400 in the middle of nowhere British Columbia! The best times were before we had internet and things to distract me and i would just walk. I would walk across whole forests tbh. It was fun!
@@mrfancyshorts6326 i feel ya on that one i didnt have very interesting terrian around here but i would walk an hour and a half each way to get to my cousins house and sometimes he wasnt even home let alone busy so id just walk back home the whole hour and a half without a break or even getting to hang out. Such was canadian country life
The best time of playing with toys/action figures of the 80s was cross playing (he-man and wwf wrestling challenges) creativity galore!
I was born mid-late 2000's,and I grew up in a small town on the Pacific West Coast U.S (Not Cali),and growing up I would leave the house by 7-9 AM and wouldn't come home till 8-9:30 at night,and growing up in a small town often lead to myself and my friends doing stupid things as kids,But arguably was the best time of my life bc I didn't have to worry majorly about how life would be,I look back and envy my past

My parents grew up in the 70s/80s philadelphia as well and have said the same things about being able to go outside independently without worry etc
I was born in 2005 and my uncle always tells me about growing up in the 80s. I’m always feeling jealous.
My parents were children of the ‘70s with me being a ‘98 baby. I think me being an “old soul” and being interested in aesthetics from the past stem from my parents integrating some of their childhood into mine. Certainly made my childhood memorable and i thank them for that.
My parents where born 1960 and 1954 and I’m a 98 baby so I definitely relate to the “old soul” ❤

I grew up watching 2 later 3 Dutch T.V. channels. And the aerial could also pick up 3 German T.V. channels.
No internet. Just reading comics and books.
We had a small car. Radio. A washing machine/dryer and an electric oven.
Electric shaver and hairdryer. Fridge.
Legos.
And that was about it.
Life was more simple then.

I was born in 2002 and grew up as a kid in the 10s in Australia, I road my bike around and hung out with some kids out in the streets kinda same as you would of. I'm sure it was the same for alot of kids back then. Not so much anymore I dont know
Born in ‘99, and since grown up as a “Zoomer” or whatever label is going to be foisted upon Gen Z. I’m also a history education major, with an affinity for the classic rock music of the 1950s to the early 90s, who loves hearing about people’s experiences during those times because the culture from decade to decade, even year to year, can change on a dime (see 2019 to 2020). Also got to hear those experiences with my Gen X parents’ stories about growing up in working class families during the 1970s and 80s, as well as my maternal grandparents lives in the late 1940s, 50s, and early 60s, so that’s always been fun.

I grew up in the 80s and 90s and time seemed to move a lot slower and less stressful
I grew up in the 90’s, but man, what I would give to go back and re-live those days as an adult… Life was so much simpler, and it seemed everything was better back then. TV (especially sitcoms), sports/pro wrestling, music, shopping at cool brick and mortar stores like Toys R Us, Suncoast, Sam Goody, WaldenBooks, etc. Just super thankful to have been able to experience those days, even as a kid.

I find it so fascinating that is it considered 'special' that he didn't live in a single family home but in a terraced house when he grew up. Here in the Netherlands, 42% of housing are terraced houses and 36% are apartments. Goes to show the differences between Europe and the USA 😄
It would be cruel to bring anyone else into this time of living honestly. I wouldn't want anyone else to experience todays living in such a confusing, pugnacious and complicated society now with a hot mix of vanity.

I was fighting, but then this was listened to, they went away. They just disappeared, and so I listened and all of a sudden I’m a distinct person.
Im only 26 but my brother is a decade younger and even just the differences in that time frame is so wierd. Yes i had a ps2 then a xbox 380 but now theres so much to keep him indoors (at one point he has 4 seperate new-ish gaming decices) and preoccupied he never really went out to play till he was 15 and by now its not really play so much as just walk around window shopping.
I was born in 95 but there are often moments where i think to myself that beeing born earlier would have been so cool. Experiencing all the advancements in technology in real time sounds so cool (even 95 till present has been pretty cool~).
But then other times, life is just to comfortable these days to imagine living in the past~

When i was little i was almost kidnaped,i was playing at the front door out side and then all of a sudden i see a man slouched behind the trees looking at me,and then i got scared and i ran into the house to tell my mom,and she went to check and the man was gone,but he was ready to strike if i didnt look up im 100% sure he d snatch me,and he was a gypsy man,they were going from house to house "begging" for free shit and money...and i dont think till this day anyone believes me,i dont my mom believed me...and im really traumatized im affraid to go anywhere alone i hate if someone is walking behind me,i just cant my heart beat goes thru the roof and i have to stop and pretend i m searching something in my bag to let the person pass me....its horrible shit,bc i want to go places but i just cant forced it,and if i do then im all on edge..

It definitely was a different time where is street lights went on you knew it was time to go home, world wasn't as dangerous as it is now so parents allowed you to stay out later
