Jimmy Carr is one of the most under appreciated comedians. 8 out of 10 cats is both hilarious and insightful at times. Randomly found it years ago in UA-cam recommended and it’s pretty obvious with Jimmy as host he carried the entire show(he is host of more than one) then they made him the focal point. at first I thought weird British humor, but the dude genuinely makes me laugh out loud.

The United States is also a continuation of the British empire in ways aswell. Picked up the reins and started utilising the systems the British created in order to further their grip on global hegemony.

As an American, its nice to hear praise about the place I grew up in and shaped me into the person I am today. As opposed to the constant hate and calling attention to our flaws that we usually get from within and foreign celebrities.
Currently living in Japan. The fact that there are people who dream of visiting the US in my neighborhood, and have this lovely image of it really makes me miss home.

    • @a-walpatches6460

That's because all Americans tend to go on about is how great they think the place is, usually without having the first clue about the world. It's a superiority complex born out of ignorance that annoys people who know better. I've been to the US twice and I hated it, I could never live there although there were some things I liked and in general the people weren't as arrogant as I was expecting. There's a weird vibe, it felt fake but I do like the look of New Orleans.

I haven't been here that long, but so far I'm constantly having to allocate my free time to getting documents together so that city hall has them on file. The bureaucracy is very demanding and notifies you such that you just barely have time to get things together on the due date.

There isn't anyone who can do that today because the system has been rigged against the people. Wall street and big corporations are looking to make this a nation of renters and are well under way. Company towns are coming back, where corporations own the housing you live in and you work for them as well. It's only going to get worse as it has for the last 20+ years. One important thing to note is that the collapse of the Roman Empire wasn't this big dramatic event that happened overnight and the next morning it was like a medieval Mad Max. In reality, the collapse was a very slow, gradual process that took place over decades. Rome slowly lost more and more power, while its outlying territories became more and more independent, until it just made more sense to declare themselves their own kingdoms outright.

Culturally you could say the Romans influenced and inspired a lot, but they massacred villages, tens of thousands of people, marching across Germanic Europe.. and in the end it was Germanic people (including Saxons) who conquered Western (true) Rome. They insulted us, humiliated us, scattered us, but united, we were stronger. We across Europe still hold Rome and it's empire with nostalgia and reverence though. If it wasn't for Rome, there would have been no great French, German, Dutch, Spanish, Portuguese or British Empires. The specture of Rome, the fear they put in the world that there might be some distant "great power" that might just sweep in and take over, absolutely escalated a desire recreate this pre-emptive strength and breadth.

I've always thought of post-WW2 US history to be in a period of time much like Rome after the Punic Wars. Rome came out of those conflicts as the top player in the Mediterranean, which was basically the world for all the big players living around it. Similarly, the world's oceans, now fully traversable, are just like the Mediterranean in Antiquity and the US has come to completely dominate those waters, just like Rome did in the Mediterranean

That policing was put in place by the wealthiest country in the world so that countries without iron, coal, and airable land could trade for what they needed to become Industrialized.

Gaza, ukraine, soon to be Taiwan, Africa, I bet the Middle East will pop off around Syria again.) Korean conflict can pop any moment. We see technocratic fascism rising all across Europe and the US, resurgence of Marxist post modern ideology, BLATANT propoganda and lies and dehumanizing whole peoples. I think what has affected America, if not the world both positively and Negatively is the Internet. It has brought us closer together, it means new global business ideas can be created and it has simplified a lot of things. But it has also complicated a lot of things, people don’t socialise in the real world, face to face, as much and develop people skills, it also means people can react instantly to messages, in the heat of the moment, instead of sleeping on things before and perhaps giving a more measured response… making people double down and become very polarised in their views and their politics. People’s attention spans are even shorter now than they were, and algorithms mean people are forever in echo chambers surrounded by people with the same views and are rarely exposed to new ideas.
