I like that you did your own thing rather than try for TV show accuracy, and love the look of it.

Hi Eagle Sci Fi Modeler. This was great. It's my 51st Birthday today and Battlestar Galactica('78/'79) was one of my favorite shows growing up. This video was like getting a great present. Thank you, my friend. Peace.

Your are right about this kit when I opened the box up I couldn't believe how parse/ little detail was on it. To be fair it is a good size and is a pretty old kit in some ways.
    Nice job......again!!

@@MrBMBuilder No, I looked at some on the Shapeways website but decided to wait. In the future, I'd like to build the Moebius version and I'll probably spend a little extra on that kit.

Nice job, Eagle! I have the original kit that I bought in 1980. It's been pulled apart, stripped and repainted three times now, and the last time I added lots of greeblies to where I'm happy with it. I tried to make it as accurate as possible, drilling out the launch tubes and cutting away the inner parts of the middle struts to the hanger pods. I didn't light it, though, and yours looks excellent. Love your work, man.

Thank you! I thought about drilling out the launch tubes, probably should have. It was a challenge this getting this thing sealed up..lol

Years ago, SubLevel 3 sold an excellent set of detail plating pieces (about 32) that could be used on the Monogram Galactica - after very heavy planing and sanding of its sidewalls. I think that Federation Models sells something similar today. The Monogram model is not a very good representation of the battlestar, however. The front wedge is a big problem; I had to do a lot of tweaking to raise the belt line in order to raise the level to a more accurate level. Little can be done to correct the faulty center strut, however.

Turned out great. A lot less parts than the Moebius version and the Moebius one was hard to light the sides of the main body as I had to fish the fibers through a double wall which you couldn't drill through till it was assembled. The extra little styrene pieces that you added make it look better than stock.

Funny...I'm thinking about doing my Starfury build next. I'm also trying to figure out all this COPPA stuff. It's so vague and convoluted.

I am going to mark my vids as not for kids and put in the second on screen title " this channel is for ages 14 and up" I was going to monitize my vids but will wait till new year now as I am sure more news will come about this. But I do think in the end UA-cam not Coppa will keep changing the rules so that creators like us will not make any money . I didn't start my channel to make money 8 yrs ago but some money from ads would help to keep it going.

The Moebius kit is more accurate but NEITHER kit is large OR entirely accurate. They're both on the small side and there are different areas where they fall short; Moebius generally comes ahead.
Yeah, this is another kit I think has to be at least 3 ft long or least 20+inches long with greater detail than what we generally see here.
Still, if you got both kits, you've got a mini-fleet and you could chalk off the differences as "sister ships built at different times with the latter incorporating new construction and technologies. That's why there are slight differences between the battlestars!"
Heck, it's true with real-life warships and later ships in a class can be very different beasts from the prototype. It's hard to believe they'd class the last 2 Nimitz-class carriers with the previous 8 considering how many hull changes and basic design feature alterations they had in those last 2 that CAN'T be retroactively installed economically in the previous ships.

    • @EagleSciFiModeler
      @EagleSciFiModeler  4 роки тому

I've often said that about same class ships. They all are different in some way. I've heard that among the Nimitz class some are longer and some displace more water then others.

@@EagleSciFiModeler The Nimitz Class ships are so different that they have 3 subclasses.
They had a problem with the ships that were constructed after the first 3 units -- the middle subclass ships are technically "too heavy" and have issues with handling in rough seas. Well, the entire class has that issue but it's worse in the middle ships because they're heavier with all the changes they made -- installing more armor, reinforcing protection for the magazines that store the armaments for the aircraft, etc. This is a ship class that grosses between 100,000 and 106,000 tons heavy load!
They had problems with earlier class carriers getting heavier creating instability and making rough weather handling worse. It was really bad with the Midway class ships. I saw video of the Coral Seas with the bow literally disappearing under water in rough seas! The Midway was even worse and listed because of the flight deck extension (put in during the rebuild of 1966-1970). They NEVER repeated the Midway modifications of the late 1960s on the other 2 Midway class units because of the cost but it was later demonstrated how much less stable Midway in rough seas with the modifications. They did another modification to fix the rough sea handling issue of the Midway but I don't think they ever fixed the problem completely.
The original gross tonnage of Midway was 45,000 tons. By the end of its service, it was close to supercarrier class gross at 64,000 tons (some sources say 67,000 - 70,000 tons) after its last major refit. It was way overweight and stressed its hull.
I don't know how bad this situation got on the Nimitz class as the weights went up. You'd think they redesigned the hull for the Gerald Ford to be sure that ship didn't have the same handling issues. The Ford already has a TON of other issues which have delayed its service entry up to 5 years now...!
