- Doug Berry of the Eastern Sierra Region of California and Nevada visits historic Virginia City, Nevada. His guest, Kellie Zuniga, the curator of the Mineral County Museum of Hawthorne, Nevada comes along for the excursion. A back street exploration of this Comstock Lode town and a hike up the mountain overlooking the town surrounded by the tailings of mining claims from the past. Storey County, Nevada
I always enjoy the videos. I've noticed 2 things.
1. They are very informative
2. Kellie always brings cookies😁
Loved your tour of the backstreets of Virginia City. I've been going to Virginia City since I was a kid. I love having a beer at the Bucket of Blood Saloon and looking out the back window at six mile canyon. The TV-Show Bonanza helped to promote Virginia City and my family used to watch that show every Sunday night back in the 1960's. I've been watching some of your videos from the past and found out that you are a musician Doug. Right on! I saw your duet with Wonderhussy who I follow and your video playing the steel guitar. I love music and I've been to many, many gigs over the years. I used to go to Winterland Arena in San Francisco during the 1970's and I met Rock Promoter - Bill Graham a couple of times. As always I will be looking forward to your next video.
Thanks Doug and Kellie for doing another great video. I really liked the display with the knives and the guns in blood bucket saloon. And I also remember when Patty Hearst robbed that bank in California. I was 11 years old in 74 and was at my grandparents house reading about the Hearst bank robbery out of the Atlanta journal constitution newspaper. I really appreciate y'all taking us along to visiting Virginia City Nevada 👍😊💯...👍💯
Great trip and tour of VC, Doug and Kellie!
About 1999, while visiting a friend in Carson City, we drove to VC. She said at night the sky is very clear and the stars shine big and bright up there.
Thank you!!! 🌸❤️
It's true, the stars are easy to observe in our area when there is no cloud cover; in fact, nearby Tonopah is known for its clear night skies without light pollution from cities. It must be super hot in the garden today; we can't forget to water, especially all those tomatoes you are growing! 🍅💦🩵
@@CalNeva there are several little tomatoes and a few zuchinni plants on the vines now.
It’s going to cool down to the 90’s later this week. 😎. The early mornings are real nice out, though. How are the roses?
@@danacalifornia9453 The municipal rose garden by the library has been in full bloom, but the early season high heat is shortening the bloom. Mine at the house are getting hit hard by the late afternoon sun, but they are beautiful in the early mornings as is our weather. We have no rose mosaic virus, Japanese beetles, or disease inducing high humidity ...so Hawthorne is a prime area to grow them.
@@CalNeva regarding the hay you saw, it reminded me - my oldest brother drove a truck for a company, about 1992, and hauled hay from, I believe, Minden area and back to California. He said the weeds in the alfalfa was much less there than what they were hauling out of Brawley, Ca. (Imperial Valley). The dairy owners complained about the quality from Brawley.
About Allensworth that one of your viewers mentioned, I have visited there twice. The parks department has improved it nicely for visitors. The tracks for the “bullet train” will pass by there and along Hwy 43, south of Corcoran, some day, some year, so there is roadway work in process. Google “Colonel Allensworth”.
After a nice drive, and a yummy, healthy lunch, there were some, neat places in town, to point out, and/or mention... including former businesses that used to exist there... I love the styles of the architecture, the various buildings, and the history attached to many of the places. That's quite a hike, Tim and Kellie. You're certainly up to the task.😊 Thanks for the historical mention, as well as the present status of some of the places, Doug. It is all so interesting. WOW, you were there when Patty Hearst took part in that holdup. That's fascinating, and frightening. As ALWAYS, thank you for all the interesting, informative, and entertaining tidbits of info, you impart, Doug.🎊 This video is tops.
🏡🙏🏻🎊🔥🌞👏🏻
Glad you enjoyed it Rhonda. Kellie said to say hello. She stays in shape by walking a lot with her girl friend in Hawthorne regularly. Yeah, it seems like the nicest prettiest days always seem to include a bank robbery. Stay safe! 🤠🩵💙💰💰💰💰⚖️
What a beautiful and historic place Virginia City is. I see Kellie is still on her quest to fatten you up Doug. With the higher
elevation there it usually is a bit cooler there no doubt. Great little walk around the town with all those wooden Italianate
and Second Empire buildings and homes. The city of Galena,IL has quite a bit there too up in the northwest part of my state. They have the biggest little shortline railroad there, the Virginia & Truckee railroad and in summer a working steam engine running on select weekends. You might want to come back for that. Tourist trap stuff, naw, just for fun!
Well that was fun! I must say you two are energetic hikers......"Hey let's see how far up this canyon we can go, and see what's up there"......at the top: 2 winded hikers and a great view! I've been to VC quite a number of times, and it's always fun. Last time there, we toured the Chollar Mine, and it was cool....(literally, on a hot day LOL). Thanks for the back street tour, a lot of nice old homes there.
Just when you thinking it couldnt get any better.thanks Doug and Kellie. I havent been there since i was young. Rootbeer at the bucket of blood and the old jail.i remember.my grandmother loved the old houses.cool quartz Kellie found.i remember the pattie hearst story.glad you didnt have to go to the bank that day...my neighbors captured a very healthy bobcat in the small wash by our house on a game camera last night..we are off to Leona valley in the morning to do some cherry picking thanks,it was a fun ride down memory lane
Thank you Casey...appears so many of us have been to Virginia City. Have fun picking those delicious cherries with the family! 🍒🍒🍒🍒🍒🍒🍒🍒
Remembering as a kid, visiting Virginia City I was shocked to see the old "Bucket of Blood" Saloon sign Thanks for the currant tour!
Alot of tailings,always fun
I have a Justin hat just like yours Doug!
Gonna make a hat box,so it doesnt get destroyed given the lifestyle I lead!
Yeah,I was in Berkley when Patty Hearst was abducted !
Again great tour !
Hi Tim, those broad brimmed hats sure make a difference keeping us cool in the hot blazing desert sun! 🌞😎 Small world; wow, there were some crazy things going on in the 70's for sure!
Another great video. You always find more interesting things to put in your videos than most people would if they visited the same place.
Thank you John, so many have covered all the famous highlights, it was an opportunity to put a different perspective on it.l
A favorite spot including BBS. Nice SLA story. Thanks U2 for the PSAs re Totalitarian Urge. - hoping Kellie has some mtn. lion deterrant.
Hi Steven, Kellie said thank you for being concerned ...I just had to put that PSA in there with the kooky signs. The BBS is one of a kind.
Great little park find. You can judge a municipality by the quality and upkeep of their park benches. 👍
So true...I agree
Thank you, Doug and Kellie. Very good "out of the typical box" look at Virginia City, NV.
Would like to see Doug and Kellie do an episode on famous Virginia City resident Barbara "Squeek" Steel.
Squeek is a world record holding pianist and all-around living legend in Northern Nevada.
Squeek often plays at the Bucket of Blood and elsewhere.
Thank you, I met my goal as I was shooting for something a little different. So interesting about Squeak. I love the piano. We will have to go back to Virginia City for sure. 😎
Hey, you two 👋 I especially love that view into the valley with the wildflowers. I really enjoyed this tour through Virginia City, I have never been there. The opera house is beautiful. Great views of the city along that mountain and a look at the mining area were nice! 😊 I bet it would be cool to stay in one of those old hotel rooms! I loved seeing the mansion, very cool and thank you for that mention! I am glad you told that story, Doug! Quite a history there!
Yes, it was fun sharing it with everyone. I only shared the story because of your comment, and happy to mention all your good work...looking forward to your new efforts! Whew, you are going to be busy. Also look forward to the music selections! Have a great trip guys!
Hey Brother Doug and Kellie!
For a 30 minute video, it sure seemed to go by fast...I guess I was really into it!
My mom had a ghost 👻 experience in one of those old hotels in Virginia City back in 1974 ! She heard a baby crying all night in the room next door, only problem is it turned out there was no room next door! The hotel people said there was nobody in the hotel that night with a baby. So...???
I don't remember the name of the hotel, but I think it was across the street from the Bucket of Blood saloon .
But I sure do remember that Patty Hearst and the SLA stuff. I wasn't too far away from that myself, being in the East Bay at the time.
And I was surprised at those signs in Virginia City 😳 I'd comment but I think I'll just be quiet right now, lol.
Speaking of quiet, I loved that peaceful hike up the canyon with the quail calling and the deer 🦌 prancing!
It WAS fun my Brother! 🇺🇸
Hi my Brother! That is a wild story you shared about your Mom. 1974 must have been some year. Patty married her security guard and was showing registered dogs after her pardon ...what were those SLA people thinking, I could comment about that but I won't either. In VC one can be at a boisterous social event and then walk a few minutes away and be surrounded by solitude on the mountain hills. Seems so many viewers have memories and a history there. Waiting for the next monsoon in Hawthorne. 💦⛈️🌤️💫
Hi guys, another great video! That’s so strange about the VC courthouse’s voting regulations since Storey County has historically been pretty conservative, but who knows anymore 🤣🤷🏼♀️ What a lovely walking tour of this historic town. That trail y’all did at the edge of town is pretty steep and rocky, but one of my favorite hidden gems. I once found half of a historic purple medicine bottle in a bush on the side of a trail but I left it. Guess I’ll have to live vicariously through your videos from now on, cause I’m moving to Nashville in a couple months (exciting turn of events!). I couldn’t be more excited to go back to the south! Take care guys, I look forward to the next one! -G
Hi G! Wow, Nashville! I heard it is great there, hardly any homeless like Reno. Tennessee is beautiful and a lot of nice people there. Good luck to you my friend G! Nevada will miss you!
Like Doug said, Nevada is going to miss you Gianna 😢 ! But best wishes for you in your new home 🏡
@@Brother_D_therail thanks so much!
Thanks for the tour. Did you see any of the Cartwrights?
Welcome; honored to have you along with us again
Great job, guys! Is that bar still there with the woman in an all-silver-dollar dress? The town was a bottle-digger's paradise in the 1960s. What do you think of these towns in Nevada and California that are being preserved by tourism? The alternative is Rhyolite, I guess. Judging from your video, it looks like they've kept McDonald's out. How would you compare VC with Goldfield? -- charlie, sacramento
Hi Charlie! Yes, the Silver Queen is still there. I like that there are towns being preserved privately, and I also appreciate the ones managed by the states; if they are managed well (such as Coloma on the American River). However, with the trends in government, I would say there is a brighter future in the private sector as a general rule. Goldfield is more eccentric and not as developed, while Virginia City is a well developed tourist destination. It depends on the visitor's personalities which style they would prefer. Goldfield is quiet, VC is a riot.
V for Victory. Remember that miniseries when we were Young, those were some scary aliens 😅
Honestly, I don't remember that at all. I was too busy doing other things outside, not too much of a television or movie watcher. Glad to have you along for the adventure!
What do you think of Bodie? Allensworth? I kind of like a mixture of preservation and liveliness.
I like Bodie, very formal, international visitors, state run, affordable for a California Park. Never been Allensworth; we will look into my friend. 👍
@@CalNeva One legend says that in 1880, Bodie was California's second or third largest city, but the U.S. Census of that year disproves this. Was predicted to be the next Comstock Lode. Lots of interesting info on Bodi in Wikipedia.
@@johnsikessikes5404 It was very large in it's day....and it is almost in Nevada, but never any question about that unlike nearby Aurora, which was once thought to be in California.
Great video Doug. Can you tell us the name of your theme song? Thanks
Thank you. It is just a stock track. I am supposed to record a new theme song up in Reno soon, so thanks, now I will remember to work on it. I have to practice up; rusty.
The area is drying up and heating up fast
Yes it is! ⛱️🔥
If there are tailings, shouldn't there be a mine entrance or an area that looks like an old mine entrance?
Yes, but many are covered over due to time and safety concerns ...we could have found some if we had an extra day to look for them .
No Mine shafts?
Not on this day.
Another great video of a quiet place. Hardly anyone walking in the downtown even.
I wonder what their water is like? Tombstone's aquifer is contaminated by open pit chemicals from the old mining days. The U.S. Government paid to have pipes bringing fresh water running from a mountain reservoir over 20 miles away. Worked fine until the day a skunk drown in the reservoir 🦨
About Kellie. 5:27 She even makes food for you.
I know a guy whose wife made him breakfast the first two days of their marriage. Then he was on his own as far as making any meals at home. 9 1/2 years.
I was wondering the same thing about the water....Personally I would try to filter it or have it privately tested seeing there is mine diggings upstream from the local aquifer on the hill. Those big wooden water tanks still work if you keep water in them. Kellie just likes to bake, which is fine because I can burn up the calories on a hike. She started cooking as a child and seems to cook for her family events still. It is good to have a hiking companion with no drama, in shape, no expectations, and who likes to have someone try out her baking projects. 🍪🍩🧁🍮🍰
