Thx for the review. Trying to decide between this or a Z6 or D750. Would this camera do well with astrophotography? Did you try the adapter? I saw another reviewer had issues with the autofocus. Have you?Your gallery was lovely.
Out of those three if I only had to pick one, I'd go with the Z6 (and the newer Z6 II version since it has various improvements). I don't do astrophotography so if you're asking about AF for those dark scenes at night for astrophotography, I don't much experience with that. I WILL say that the Z7 and Z5 (both of which I currently own) and the Z50 (previously owned), they are the most accurately focusing cameras I've ever owned. No question about it. I'm talking about single point AF and AF-S (focus once on the subject and stop, not continuous AF). There's also a 'pinpoint AF' option I sometimes use to get an accurate focus on a very small object.
Back illuminated sensor gives more advantage to read data speed from sensor then to ISO capabilities. That is why Z 5 has poor frames per seconds rate and poorer video capabilities. I am more than enough satisfied with Z 5 ISO. Didn't see that much diff between Z5 and rest of Zs. I am stunned with your photos. Didn't believe in this lens much but seems I was wrong.
How does the size of Z5 compare to Z7 you have? Is it the about the same size. Do you feel the Z5 would be professional enough camera for wedding photography or product photos? Are you using for hobby photos or professional work?
It's almost exactly the same size as the Z6 and Z7. I think it feels well built and at least up to the standard of something like a D750. So far I've had a great experience with it. The image sensor has great high ISO and great dynamic range. I am only using it as a hobby, but I've used a lot of the same cameras pros use for weddings and that includes the D750 which was not technically a pro body, but many use it professionally. I think the subject matter is important for picking a camera for pro use. For example, this would not be well suited as a pro sports camera, but it would easily excel at product photography and should be fine at weddings too, as long as the light for your subjects are not in really dark environments. I think a Nikon DSLR still is able to focus better in low light.
Thanks for the video and your take on the camera. I enjoyed your conversational style, especially after watching too many "forced" UA-cam personalities:) I am going to get a Z5 - the only question is whether to wait for a sale. In Canada you can get the 24-70 F4which gets good reviews.
Thank you. I appreciate it :-) The 24-70 f/4 S lens is outstanding! I highly recommend if it you don't NEED the extra reach of the 24-200. The 24-70 is simply an amazing lens (and I'm not known for being too excited or hyping something, but that lens is WELL worth the money and it's a steal if you can get it for a few hundred dollars off when buying it as a kit with the body).
@@ThePhotographyHobbyist Thanks for the recommendation. Here in Canada you can get the Z5, 24-70 F4 lens and a FTZ adapter for USD 2375 from Henrys (includes all taxes and we have a few:))
@@rightsbasedsocialpolicy5086 Ok. That seems in line with the pricing here if you were to buy the body and lens separately (but that's without the FTZ). So I think that's a reasonable price since it also includes the FTZ. They don't offer the 24-70 here as a bundle. It's body only, body + 24-50 or body + 24-200.
@@rightsbasedsocialpolicy5086 That deal at Henrys in Canada (Toronto) is $260 off the FTZ adapter putting adapter at about $69 CDN, when bought with Z5/Z6 body, so the package you mention is actually $2469. and taxes are still extra, price as of Sept. 12-2020. Add these items to cart at Henrys and this will show it. The Z6 is about $700. CDN more than the Z5 for body in Canada. Unless you need 4K full screen width no crop, and faster frame rate, Z5 is a good deal.
@@adrianvanleeuwen Yes, they just reduced it again a few days ago I noticed. It was at the current price to begin with and then they upped it for a few weeks.
Just got the Z 5 and a 24-70 f/4 in yesterday and both of these pieces of kit SLAP. I almost got the 24-200, but I already have a Z 50 and am waiting for the 16-140 to have an all-in-one lens for travel, so decided to get the f/4 and build up my kit from there. One day I hope to get the 70-200 f/2.8
@@ThePhotographyHobbyist wish the Z 5 had AF-A mode like the Z 50 does. That's incredibly handy when I find myself in a pinch and need to start shooting quickly
Chris McGrew It’s strange that the Z6 and Z7 also don’t have that mode but maybe they consider it more of a focus mode for less skilled shooters and only included on the lower end bodies, I’m not sure.
On the review and Z forum at DPreview there are many complaints about the Z 5's AF in low light. I have always been impressed with your objective reviews, I'm an outdoor shooter of stills mainly and was very interested in this kit. I find myself at dusk often for my subject ( flyfishing). Was AF in low light an issue for you?
How does the lens compare to 24-120 f4? I know the lens was released after you made this video but have you had a chance to try it? People have said it is as sharp as the 24-70 f4, so it is an added bonus to have the extra focal length in one lens.
If you are asking about the Z Mount 24 to 120 mm lens, then yes it is an outstanding lens and I bought that a few weeks ago. It is optically excellent, looks great and is built very well. I haven’t had a chance to get out and shoot very much with it but from the experience I’ve had with it so far, I would say it’s at least as good as the 24 to 70mm f4 Z mount lens.
@@ThePhotographyHobbyist yes, not the F mount one which people have said wasn’t very good. Some have said it doesn’t have VR like the 24-200 so I wonder how this will affect the performance.
@@elektricdrop I haven’t really noticed much difference between the 24 to 120 and 24 to 200 as far as being able to hold it steady for shots with slower shutter speeds. For shorter focal lengths I’m usually pretty comfortable handholding a shot at 1/15 of a second. If I’m using the lens at 120 mm, I would probably set my minimum shutter speed for auto ISO to 1/ 30th of a second. Just depends on what I’m shooting and how much I might be moving myself or how much the subject might be moving
I would prefer the Z5 over the a6400. I've had both. The Z5 is definitely bigger so if that matters, that's something to consider. But, the photos from the Z5 are definitely better in my opinion. Excellent image quality. The a6400 is good too, don't get me wrong...but the Z5 is a step up overall.
Appreciate your review on this Z5. I also looked at your picture gallery. They are simply amazing and crystal clear. I love to own one full frame body upgrading from the crop sensor. Right now I have a crop sensor D5600 with 18-55 AF-P lens, AF-S DX Nikkor 55-300mm f/4.5-4.6G ED VR Zoom lens AF-S and the nifty fifty f1.8 lens. I am an enthusiastic shooter shooting landscapes during travel, and most of the time people and portraits of my kids.. Which body and Z lens would you suggest me to go for an upgrade? Z5 or Z6 or a used z6? If I bundle with an FTZ adapter along with any Z body in the US, then it is price of the z5 body $1299 +50$(1343$). Z5 with 24-200 zoom $2096 and Z5 with 24-50 $1643. Will the nifty fifty be useful with the adapter? I saw few reviews saying the focus is not proper with nifty fifty with z body. I know the zoom and kit lenses that I have, if I use it with FF body, it will act as a crop sensor(though am not using the full frame sensor). By any means will all these lenses properly adapt with z5/z6 with FTZ adapter? I also understand that I MUST have a Z lens to use the full potential of the Z body. In that case which z lens must I consider ? Note: I am ready to get rid of D5600 body and lenses I own if they seem to be of no use to me after upgrading to Z body. On the other hand, I also checked Canon Eos RP. Right now it is in deal for $999 with 24-105mm zoom lens (NOT the f4 L glass) though. I see mixed reviews on RP. What is your advice on my FF upgrade? And which FF body and lens should I be buying? Please clarify.
Thank you. Regarding a new Nikon camera, for your needs I would probably recommend the Z6 II. The original Z6 has very good AF but the new Z6 II with the dual processors is even better/faster/more reliable from what I've seen in the comparisons. I don't shoot much action/moving subjects like kids, so the Z5 and Z7 (original) work great for me. For the lens, those Z mount lenses are more limited right now but Nikon has more lenses in the plans. For now, to get a native Z mount lens and have enough reach (but certainly not as much as your 55-300), I'd probably recommend the Z 24-200mm. I don't know if they sell the Z6 II with the 24-200 as a bundle, but maybe not. Might have to be purchased separately. I don't know much about the Canon RP other than it's an older model now and already started out with an older sensor when it was new. I think you'll get better image quality from the Z6 II (more dynamic range for example and the raw files hold up better when editing).
@@ThePhotographyHobbyist Thank you for the detailed reply. Ya z6 II is great so as the price :-( and Nikon sells with 24-70 bundle for 2599$. I am on a tight budget. So really in a dilemma which z body to choose. Whatever I narrow down, should I be considering along with the FTZ mount or not.. (to utilize the long zoom and nifty fifty that I have already)? Your view on this please
@@kohsautube OK, if budget is a restriction, I would highly recommend the Z5. To me the Z5 is more or less a mirrorless equivalent of the D750. You can certainly use your existing DSLR lenses (AF-S and AF-P type will have auto focus on the Z5) on the Z5 but keep in mind you will lose some resolution because of the crop because the lenses you have are the APS-C lenses (except for the 50mm because I think you have the full frame 50mm lens, so no crop while using that on the Z5).
Also keep in mind you won’t have auto focus if you try to use one of the older AF-D lenses because there is no focus motor in the FTZ adapter. The newer AF-S and AF-P lenses have focus motors inside the lenses and don’t rely on the body for a focus motor like the older AF-D lenses did.
@@ThePhotographyHobbyist Thanks much.. probably be narrowing down between z5 or z6II. Waiting to see if Nikon announces any deals on these next week, being thx giving day.. so far none :(
Nigel Danson uses a Z7 and he recently tried the Z5. The Z7 and Z5 apparently have the same level of weather sealing and Nigel says he uses his Z7 in the rain with no problems, so I think the Z5 should also be the same. ua-cam.com/video/Nb3uXguren4/v-deo.html
Thanks. I'd say they're close to the same when when you're shooting in really low light the focusing does get slower. I understand the new Z6II and Z7II have better focusing in low light.
Thank you for your sample galleries! Your photos look really good. Did you also improve saturation in LR or are the colors that "punchy" out of cam/RAW? (huge difference to my Fuji colors)
@@ThePhotographyHobbyist ok, thanks! good to know ... I will also try that :) Is the output quality of the Z5/Z6 much better than the Fuji X-T4's in you opinion? I like the Nikon sample images a lot more but they were probably taken at different time of the year.
@@patrick.991 For my Fuji raw files, I start with the Stadnard/Provia camera matching profile in Lightroom and then set a few of the basics to start with. After that I just look at the phone and adjust it to my taste. I have a video here where I show my usual process: ua-cam.com/video/UZDpkd1CnTk/v-deo.html
@@ThePhotographyHobbyist thank you. I moved to Capture One when I switched from Nikon to Fuji. But I'll have a look at your process :) Have a nice day!
Thank you. I already own the Z7 (since Oct 2018). I just wanted a second body with lower resolution. I tried a few other cameras as a second body (some were not Nikon) and wasn't fully happy so when the Z5 came out it looked like a good match for me. The only potential issues I can see for anyone considering the Z5 instead of the Z6 or Z7 would be the 4.5 FPS continuous shooting for stills and the 1.7x crop in 4k video...but that doesn't matter to everyone. Just something to be aware of. The Z6 and 7 don't have those limitations. It's fine with me because I rarely shoot 4k video and I almost never shoot fast action where I'd want more than 4.5 frames per second.
Yeah that's a nice deal. Great lens and still a great camera. Be sure to update the firmware on the camera body and lens when you have it. There have been several improvements to the Z6 via firmware. Assuming you have the original Z6 and not the Z6 II, here's the link: downloadcenter.nikonimglib.com/en/download/fw/534.html
Good afternoon! Two more questions: 1. If you take paired images on a Nikon Z5 and a Nikon Z7, will the resolution of the images visually differ greatly from each other? 2. The Nikon Z5 has a built-in low-pass filter. Does the presence of this filter degrade the sharpness of photos?
While viewing on my computer, I can’t see any difference between the Z7 and Z5 images unless I’m cropping very much. Resolution and sharpness on each camera is excellent in my option.
@@ThePhotographyHobbyist Thanks! One more question.. And I choose between Nikon Z5 and Nikon Z6ii. Do you think the Nikon Z5 will be inferior in color reproduction, dynamic range of the Nikon Z6ii? I was still looking at the Sony a7R iii. I like that it has 47.5 MP. But this is a 2017 camera. Maybe it's better to buy a more modern Nikon Z6ii camera?
@@anatoliybarsukov7795 I don’t think you would notice much difference between the Z6 II and the Z5 for image quality. I had that Sony camera you mentioned, in the past, and it was a great camera, but I prefer the Nikon. If you can find an original Z7 in excellent condition, that’s another option because it’s still a great camera and not much different than the newer Z7 II.
For me, I like it much better than the Fuji. Are use the single point auto focus the most with AF-S and it is absolutely more accurate than the Fuji. The electronic viewfinder is better and it’s more comfortable in general. I know everyone has their own personal preferences but then Nikon works better for me. And of course the image quality is outstanding as you can see from the photo gallery I posted in the description.
I ve the z6 and z5 just sold the z50 ,I love the z5 so far no issues on my end , I ve paired both with my z 85 and z 50 and pics and bokeh is a amazing , hoping to get the 24-200mm as a travel lense then am good , if it works like the 50 to 250 then will be happy cuz i sold that lense
If it's fast action wildlife photography, it might be a challenge with the AF system in the Z5. You might do OK though, but something like the Sony a6400 would have better AF for fast action. For video, it's very nice but keep in mind the 4K video is cropped at 1.7x, so if you need full frame video with no crop when shooting 4K, that will be an issue. Also it's limited to 60 fps. I don't shoot video much and rarely shoot fast action so those things are not important to me.
I was looking at the Olympus 12-200. I also want a second camera body If I buy the Z5 and the 24-200 it's only costing me about £500 than if I just bought the Olympus lens. So it might kill two birds with one stone and I think it would be fun having two systems. I'm not convinced the Nikon lens is as sharp but maybe the full frame advantages will make it a close thing.
Hi I purchased Z5 with z 24-200mm. So far I love this camera. It is going a great job. I have a question. I do see vignetting even I turned it off under the vignette control setting. I do use a lens filter. I am not sure why do I get vignette. Should I play around with low high and normal to avoid it. Your assistance here in getting rid of the vignetting straight out of the camera would be helpful.
I noticed a little vignette mostly at the widest aperture but it normally doesn't bother me because I normally add a mild vignette in editing and I shoot raw files anyway. If you're only wanting JPG straight from the camera I'd try increasing the vignette control setting and see if that helps you.
@@ThePhotographyHobbyist Correct it is mostly at the widest aperture. I will give it a try increasing the setting. I thought increasing the vignette control or setting it to high would create more vignetting to the pic. Hence I kept if off earlier assuming to get rid of it. Is it not the way how that control works?
@@ThePhotographyHobbyist hmm surprisingly the vignette control low, high, normal thumbnails shown in the menu is right opposite to what you said. But I did try with High setting and vignetting is not there. The thumbnails they showed in the menu for High setting misleads :( Thanks for helping out
Incredible review, thank you! I’ve just ordered the Z5 with the 24-200 kit. Was debating between the Z5 and Z6, but decided with the former because I’m fairly new to photography. Were all of your Z5 photos in gallery taken with the 24-200 or combo of lenses? What software do you use to edit? Thanks again for the genuine review!
Derek Reis Thanks! I appreciate it. Every photo in my Z5 gallery today was made with the 24-200mm lens. I may eventually use my 24-70 on the Z5 but for now my goal is to fill that gallery with new photos from the Z5 / 24-200 combo. I shoot raw format photos and use Adobe Lightroom Classic CC to edit.
Thanks for the real review, I have a D500 which I absolutely love, for sports (work) and wildlife (fun) but I want to go mirrorless for the silence and the quality, add an ftz and I can use my lovely Sigma ART glass so bring on the January sales!
KingSam Thanks. I usually ramble all over the place so it is often difficult to add meaningful timestamps to my videos. I will think about that going forward though.
I am thinking to go for Nikon Z7. Its a high pixel camera & my hands are not very steady & the usage will be fully handheld, so I am worried whether it will be subject to camera shake due to that. However it has good IBIS & I will be using faster shutter speed & EFCS. Kindly advise whether should I go for Z7 (interested due to its sharpness in the absence of AA filter) or some other lower pixel camera like Z5.
subhashis banerjee Hi. Check my Nikon Z7 gallery because the vast majority of those photos are handheld. I am 50 years old, drink coffee often and I feel comfortable easily hand holding the camera down to 1/15 second at 70 mm or even with the new 24 -200 at 200 mm at 1/15 second if I am very careful. The Z7 is my favorite camera. It's outstanding and I highly recommend it if the extra money is not a problem. www.thephotographyhobbyist.com/CAMERAGEAR/Nikon-Z7-Gallery/
I have just looked at the photo gallery. Quite lovely! A very wide range of photos that show what this versatile lens can do. May I ask, if one was prepared to concede the range, then which lens , this one or the 24-70 f/ 4 would be your favourite and why ? Or is it as yet too short of an acquaintance with the 24-200 to have formed a solid judgement ? Cheers
If I didn't care about the extra reach of the 24-200, the 24-70 is certainly a better lens overall. Very sharp, almost issues like chromatic aberration or flare and a very close focus distance. I love having a telephoto lens though so for me, if I had to pick only one, I'd still pick the 24-200 for the versatility and optically it's also very good (but just not quite as good as the 24-70 f/4 is).
Great video! I think I’m going with the Z5 with a 24-70 f4 to replace my d750. I shoot landscapes, street, travel, low light, birds at the feeders, low light. I worry about low light, but it looks like it’s only a stop from a Z6. Originally it was going be a d850, but think this Z5 would be perfect 👌🏻

Ok.
Enjoy it 😊 The 70-200mm looks like an amazing lens.
It does struggle indoors in low light. I went to the Biltmore estate yesterday evening for the night tour and it did focus but it’s slower.
@@ThePhotographyHobbyist thx
Your review of both the lens and the body is relevant and useful to me. Your presentation style is calm and well-considered . Thank you.
Thanks. I appreciate it. :-)
Im between z5 and sony a6400. I shoot mainly photos
@@ThePhotographyHobbyist im more on photography and good image quality. Thank you
Appreciate your review on this Z5.
Waiting to see if Nikon announces any deals on these next week, being thx giving day.. so far none :(
Do you think the weathersealing would hold up in hard rain? Thanks!
Nice gallery and review. How would you rate the low light autofocus between the z7 and z5?
Thanks. I usually set saturation to 10 and vibrance to 20 for just about every photo, for any camera I use, including Fuji in the past.
@@ThePhotographyHobbyist ok, thanks! good to know ... I will also try that :)
Is the output quality of the Z5/Z6 much better than the Fuji X-T4's in you opinion? I like the Nikon sample images a lot more but they were probably taken at different time of the year.
@@patrick.991 For my Fuji raw files, I start with the Stadnard/Provia camera matching profile in Lightroom and then set a few of the basics to start with. After that I just look at the phone and adjust it to my taste. I have a video here where I show my usual process: ua-cam.com/video/UZDpkd1CnTk/v-deo.html
@@ThePhotographyHobbyist thank you. I moved to Capture One when I switched from Nikon to Fuji. But I'll have a look at your process :)

@@patrick.991 Oh, ok. It's probably similar as far as the basic settings. C1 definitely handles the Fuji x-trans files better than LR.
Great video. I have a d750 and thinking moving to mirrorless, Z5 or Z6. Why the Z5 and not the Z6 or Z7?
Just picked up used Z6 and 24-200 in excellent condition for $1400. Best deal in FF photography.
Two more questions:

How are you finding the Z5 compared to the X-T4?
For me, I like it much better than the Fuji. Are use the single point auto focus the most with AF-S and it is absolutely more accurate than the Fuji. The electronic viewfinder is better and it’s more comfortable in general. I know everyone has their own personal preferences but then Nikon works better for me. And of course the image quality is outstanding as you can see from the photo gallery I posted in the description.
@@ThePhotographyHobbyist Awesome thanks. The IQ. Step up over the Fuji?

C Sy The 24-200 is a great lens. I’m really happy with it. Next on my list is the 85.
@@ThePhotographyHobbyistgreat i love the zoom range, the 85 is unreal👌
would this be a good camera for an amateur wildlife photographer? also interested in shooting video.
Congrats with new Z 😀✋🏻
Евгений Миронов Thank you :-)
Great review👍sounds like a great camera.
Thank you :-) It is.
I was looking at the Olympus 12-200.
I also want a second camera body
If I buy the Z5 and the 24-200 it's only costing me about £500 than if I just bought the Olympus lens. So it might kill two birds with one stone and I think it would be fun having two systems.
I'm not convinced the Nikon lens is as sharp but maybe the full frame advantages will make it a close thing.
Can the Z5 with 24-200 lens also be used to shoot photos of bracelets in a light box? TIA
Sure, that should be an easy task for most cameras because it’s a very controlled situation.
@@ThePhotographyHobbyist thank you very much for your reply and all the best for you!
@@kohsautube actually it’s the opposite. Set on High removes more vignette.
Mike Edgar Thank you. I appreciate it. 😊
Consider adding time stamps
@@ThePhotographyHobbyist Thank you.
