@@RalphMayhewPhotography Not really, I'm mostly a 50mm shooter. I have 2 Summicrons M mount that I use on the 262 and SL with adapter. For Nikon it's just the 50mm 1.8. For the M43 cameras they share a 12-45mm, 12-32mm and 20mm 1.7
Love my z5 for what I got it for( landscapes portraits) but didn’t really know how much sports I would actually shoot and a z6 would have served me much better. Now deciding on 85 vs 105 for sports and other things.
I started my digital journey with the Nikon D50 and went through the d70 and d100. I got the D200, which I now use to back up my D700. My photography took a 10-12 year hiatus. I still love the D700, but I wanted to get into mirrorless. I just ordered the Z5 today. Thanks for a great video.

A very refreshing look at the Z5 and Nikon in general. I have very fond memories of Surfers Paradise, been there many times and it is beautiful. Back in 2008 I took many images from the viewing point of the Q1 tower with my Nikon D300 and had several printed quite large. I use the Z5 for a lot of content on my channel (AVP Studios) and it is excellent. I have subscribed, looking forward to more Nikon elated content.

A big advantage of Nikon Z system is that you can adapt, with fully AF, the Canon EF / EF-S lenses, Sony E mount lenses, Nikon F lenses. So you have a lot of lenses in used market to play with.

Some good reasons to check into this a little more Thanks. It seems like it would cover the bases I am interested in. for me now or until I can move up, it is my S21 Ultra, Osmo Action, and MA2. But then again, I am still on the upside of the learning curve 👍. But that is some of the fun n learning something new also it keeps you young. 😎

Thanks Bob. There is a lot of advantage and control to a dslr and this full frame is an incredible place to start at. You’d probably want the z mount 24-70 f4 to start with so that’s worth factoring in to all the sums. But if your phone, drone and action cam are delivering the goods then keep going with that I say.

Considering moving from my current D7500 to a Z5...in your opinion, all things being "equal", would you consider this a step "up", a step "down" or simply a "lateral" move?
Oh thank you so much. That’s very encouraging. That’s a good question and I see why you’re asking it. The D750 can shoot more FPS and would likely give you more shots a battery. BUT Z5 mirrorless tech is so good! It streamlines the shooting experience (at first it feels like cheating). It also has a number of other features (ie. better video) not available. In my opinion (and not know what you mainly need it for) I would say it’s feels like a step up to go to the z5. Plus Z mount lenses are awesome and then new adapters from F mount to Z are great. I hope this helps. If you get an FTZ adapter get version 2.
Lol...well based A LOT on your review...and on comments posted by others for this particular vid...I drove 125 miles to a big box store that actually had both a Z50 and a Z5 demo model in the store. Going hands on REALLY sealed the deal
I was kind of leaning towards the Z50 at first, at least on paper. It ticked quite a few boxes for me, including APS-C "apples to apples", coming from the D7500. But, I have big hands and the Z50 got lost in those big mitts and was pretty cramped.
I ended up going to a small "mom and pop" retail store that sells/buys/trades and traded the D7500 and two lenses (35mm 1:1.8 and a 18-300mm "all around") for a "used" (lol...little more than 500 snaps) Z5 body and 24-70/4 S lens, plus a wee bit of cash. So a "two-fer" for me...first mirrorless, first foray into full-frame. Been playing around with it in the meantime; think I got a decent deal and so far, liking how the Z5 shoots and feels. Bit of a learning curve but it'll come with practice.
I see an FTZ ii adapter in the future so I can try out some of my buddy's AF-S F mount lenses. Gasped a bit when I looked at some of the full-frame Z glass but that FTZii adapter gives me hope.
I'm light on action (sports, BIF, etc.) and focus more on landscape, street scenes and just ventured a bit into macro, so I think the Z5 will meet my needs. And that EVF....ohhhhhh, my!

I'm considering moving on to the Nikon Z system and this was really useful. My first 'proper' camera was a D7200 with the 18-105 kit lens, a very versatile camera and I now have quite a selection of lenses. I then bought a Nikon 1 V1 with an FT1 as an experimental pocket camera, that led to the V2 then a V3 along with pretty much every CX lens. The pocketable camera is now a J5 with the 10-30mm PD and I have carried out an Infra Red conversion on the V1. I did have a brief flirtation with full frame when I purchased a D3X, however, it's a heavy beast and my available lenses were limited and without VR. I think IBIS is a really big step forward, so I have parted company with the D3X and AF lenses and will be buying a Z5. I did consider the Z6 and Z7, but after considering all the options I decided to spend the difference on native glass and an FTZ. I think the D7200 will eventually be replaced by a Z50. Its hard to find anything to match the high frame rate with continuous AF available with the V2 and V3 without spending serious money, so they will be sticking around to cover my interest in motor racing and equestrian action shots. I currently use some of my 18v 4 Ah power tool batteries with an adaptor to power my cameras for extended periods. Good to know the Z5 has the USB C port allowing the camera to be powered from an external source.
I used to shoot on a d7200. Great camera. Tell me more about powering your camera from your power tool batteries? That sounds awesome.
@@RalphMayhewPhotography I started out using a fairly common USB power bank, they are commonly constructed from 3 x 18650 batteries so their core voltage is about 9.6 volts. The USB output is 5V so I used a buck boost circuit to take it back up to the 9V required to match the camera battery voltage. There are plenty of suppliers of the dummy batteries on Amazon that fit in where the EN-ELxx goes and there's a slot for the cable out by the battery door.
There is an original mains powered accessory for studio use from Nikon, but that is a bit expensive.
Next I realised that I could get a USB output accessory for the power tool batteries. I have 2 types from both Metabo and the Power Xchange type. The Metabo USB has an integral torch and a belt clip. The 18V core voltage gives twice as much output for the equivalent Ah rating.
However, there are now some direct connection adaptors for the power tool batteries available on Ebay, making an 18V to 9V regulator is a pretty easy circuit so that's next as it will be more efficient.
I used this setup at the Badminton Horse Trials for the cross country, which lasts all day. I had 2 cameras and used 3 of the 2.5 Ah power tool batteries. The Nikon 1 was the more power hungry using 2 batteries versus the D7200 using only 1.

I've had the D7200 for ten years, and last November, I got the Z30. It's lovely camera and can shoot in ways the D7200 can't. HOWEVER, the D7200 still can get images that the Z30 can't. Also, I will keep the D7200 until I can adapt the Nikkor 10.5 mm Fisheye to mirrorless.
Hey mate, great vid. I’ve been tossing up on wether or not to purchase the Z5. I had pretty much made my mind up and you’ve pretty much pushed me over the line. Currently using a entry level D3100 mainly for ocean and surf photography, I get decent results but definitely time for an upgrade. I’m a Burleigh local and often frequent “the nut” for a few snaps myself. 👌🏼

Ralph! Great video... I've been using the Mini-HDMI output on the Nikon Z5 with a Fotga E50 5inch monitor attached to it, works great for both taking video and pictures. If this camera had 4K full frame and flip forward view screen it would probably be the hottest camera on the market.

@@RalphMayhewPhotography Yeah your right they are surely aware of this and it's one of those sales tactics to get folks buying Z6/Z7 for those features.
I find with field monitors its best to go for a larger battery, they are battery hogs because of the super bright screen. But the super bright screen is nice because you can easily see it on a bright sunny day. I opted for the NP-F960 62.6 Wh battery.
Another fun thing is the wireless HDMI transmitter/receiver. I've been tinkering with the Hollyland Technologies Mars 400S Pro. It's pretty cool to have a monitor tucked away in a different location than the camera while shooting you can glance at it to make sure everything is still in frame, focus, and audio levels are good. It helps with me anyway having to be on both sides of the camera shooting and acting at the same time 🤪...LoL
I wonder if the Z5 will ever get 4K FF via a software upgrade. Now that the Z6ii is out, the software update wouldn’t take sales away from the Z6.

They could if they wanted to. Often a full frame crops 4K because the processor can’t write enough data quickly enough. But the Z5 has the same sensor as the Z6 so it is possible. But there’s no way. They still need people to have a reason to buy the Z6 and Z6ii :( feels like there needs to be a reconfiguring of the camera world. It’s system is pretty archaic. They should have a body that you buy and the. Opt for what sort of capabilities it can have that come at an additional subscription cost. #gamechanger.

Beautiful backdrop. We're leaning toward this camera, my wife and I.
We don't really care about high-end video or fast action shots. We're probably gonna get the 35mm prime and the 50-250 zoom. I've only owned two cameras in my 46.5 years of life -- a 2005 Sony DSC-H1 and a 2013 Olympus VG-180. My wife still owns six film cameras and used to have a darkroom and also worked in a photo lab but has never worked in digital (other than iPhone snaps of course).

We are going to make a gift to ourselves for the holidays of either the Fuji X-S10 or the Nikon Z5; however, not too long after the above comment we ended up picking up a used Nikon D5300 with 2 lenses and a bunch of accessories off of eBay as a way to learn and gauge our interest in further pursuing the hobby. It has worked out well and I actually think we'll keep the D5300 and add one of the two I mentioned so we have two (although for traveling it probably only makes sense to bring one body and one zoom lens). When I was looking to upgrade to a new mirrorless system, I checked out and considered all of the z cameras, and ended up going with the 5... Features per dollar, this is one of the best out there imo, although the new 8 is looking pretty sweet...

Have you found any autofocus issues with the z5 in low light? I've seen some stuff on that and was wondering what your experience was? Z5 might be my upgrade from the d7200 but not if it has problems focusing.

Thanks heaps champ. I gave the z5 a bit of a low light focussing run through last night. It was pretty good. It’s not as good as the Canon R 5 & 6 but it’s better than the z6. What sort of low light focussing are you considering and focussing on what?

I'm looking to start my own business in family photography. Relistically that won't be in poorly lit scenarios though so probably not an issue. Was looking at the z5 over the z6 cause I don't shoot video and dont need the higher frame rate.
It was more that some reviews said the focusing was bad in general particularly in low light.
I've not heard anyone say their z5 focuses better than a z6 though so maybe any issues were fixed with a firmware update? Which would be awesome!

Good luck with the business Dave. I took the Z5 out when it was nearly dark and it auto focussed quite well. It has a green light it engages to light the subject it then focussed on. If the settings are too dark to decipher the subject then it won’t be able to auto focus. Hope that helps.

Thanks for the question. Honestly if you’re wanting to take jewellery the success is in what lens you choose and what finished product your after. Maybe you need a macro lens or an 85mm lens. I’d start there in my calculations and work backwards. In the little I know of your circumstances, if you’re after a mirrorless Nikon the z50 might be the way to go. Hope this helps.
Aperture on crop or fx is the same but your frame will be different, if you want the same frame setting on the crop as on the fx you have to back away from your subject and that is where your dept is changing.. but f1.2 on crop and fx are the same if the distance from your subject is the same (this isn't coming from me but from the teacher at the academy)

for a boudoir shoot, do you recommend any lenses for the Z5? Type NIKKOR Z 35mm f/1.8 S or NIKKOR Z 85mm f/1.8 S?
I e never done a visor shoot but both of them sound like good choices. If you can afford the s lenses would be a pretence. If not the sigma art lens are great.
I have a Z5. Damn good camera for general photography with the 24-200 VR, ya can't beat that combo! Z5 has its limitations for Video (which I could care less about) and a low shutter speed for sports/wildlife but what ya get at 1/4000 at 4.6 FPS is excellent. just out firmware upgrade did solve some low light autofocus issues (I use manual most, as i do close shots and easily pic my focal point, from the lens ring with peaking, faster than using the joystick) I found it excellent at long exposure night shots, Nikons color really comes out, the other point is the color pallette, cats ass!

G’day Umar, if it were me, and it actually was a long while back. Same upgrade choice from same camera, only prices were higher, lol. I’d go for the Z6 if price is all the same. That’s what I did.

Hey full frame does not change the aperture, its the same amount of light either way. Full frame does have a larger sensor and therefore larger pixels that can gather more light. Generally its smoother and has more dynamic range, thats why people say it is better in low light. People make the mistake a lot thinking the crop factor applies to aperture too and actually it doesn't. Teleconverters on the other hand it does.

APS-c sensors are so good these days that they are just as good as full frame. For example the Nikon D500 and Fuji X series.
I shot on one (well more than one) for years and loved them 👍

You’re asking about the auto focus?
I can not get used to the Z series. I have a load of heavy Nikon glass and this camera is just to small for my taste. Therefore D850, D810 and even the D700. The D700 is still magical. And 12 MP is still enough even for landscape.
That’s a fair call. Another option is to buy a battery grip which will bulk up size and weight. I do get what you’re saying though. 👍 thanks for commenting.

The So t range have very expensive lenses in the long run and the Sony a7i is a much older camera with older tech in it.

Its a move we are thinking of doing, getting a Z5 instead of using our Nikon D750 which is of course also an excellent camera with a similar if not the same sensor.

Can't quite see why dual SD card (and all the storage that delivers) is an advantage when you only get 500 shots on the battery before you have to go home?
While that battery is recharging you can download from the card and start again? I'd rather have better better battery capacity than all that excess storage.
It's a good back up if one card fails and you're doing an important shoot. It also means you can add different batteries to a day long shoot and not have to worry about extra storage.
It's a VERY important thing for people that shoot events, it feels nice to know you have a backup and you can deliver to your clients ☺️

It's good for portrate in day light.
But in low light it's horrible.
Very poor autofocusing and subject tracking.
I mised lot of scenes in several wedding events.
So i returned Z5 and got 7years old d750.
Is that since the new firmware update? I took it out the other night in very poor light at dusk and found it to be pretty good.

But Z5's low light autofocus mode active in af-s mode only.
Not in af-c mode.

I like taking landscapes but my z5 even on auto blows out the sky and underexposed the land if I focus on the sky.???
My phone does better all the time.

I’d use your histogram and make sure each shot doesn’t have the bars touching either side. Shooting raw and you’ll be able to bring up shadows and lower highlights in post.
Don’t use auto for one
why hasn't anyone mentioned the latency between taking a photo and displaying it on the screen, is there a way to fix this?
I never use that function. I choose to manually display after I’ve finished shooting whatever I am.

Latest Nikon can do 120 pics per second. Would never need that many shots of same subject lol

This was 6 months ago. Since then the camera has become popular and less available therefore the price has changed. At the time of filming it was US$999.
Firstly a so called full frame sensor is a cropped sensor relative to medium frame and large frame.
Sencond the more pixels a full frame sensor has the smaller the pixel size comming near to APSC or even MFT.
Third there is the same amount of light relative to the sensor size comming onto the sensor for equivalent lenses for all sizes - there is no parameter for sensor or film size on light meters.
Yes depth of field (DoF) is different but the value of DoF depends on the genre and motif - for landscape, macro and street as much as possible is wanted giving cropped sensors an advantage,
Fourth in digital cameras processor capabilities play a growing role determining the image quality and in the possibilities of in camera processing more and more and the smaller the sensor the bigger the capabilites of processors relative to sensor size giving an edge to cropped sensors.
Last but not leadt the term full frame is a flaw because it is not by far the upper limit of sensor size and before the digital hype in German such formats had been called "Kleinformat" that is small format.
So just to clarify if someone gave you a free camera and you had the choice of a ASP-C or a full frame, you would go ASP-C?
