Stabilo Woody 3 in 1 - tips and tricks

  • Is it a watercolour, is it a pencil, is it a crayon??? According to Stabilo, the Woody crayon is all three in one. Originally designed as chunky pencils for small hands, mixed media artists have been loving the versatility of these pencils. I've come late to the party as I have only just come across them, so in this film I put them through their paces to see how they perform on black and white paper, with ink, on wet paper etc You get the idea! I learn a lot along the way and will show you the stripey abstract piece I did to see how they performed. ‪@stabilo‬
This is not a sponsored film - my son gave them to me for Christmas! If you would like to support my art, please consider donating via KoFi, which will let me make more content: ko-fi.com/lizc... Thank you!
I got lots of questions about lightfastness ratings, so I reached out to Stabilo after the film went out and they replied very quickly (well done!). I have put the chart on the community tab of this channel. Some like black and gold are very lightfast, others like the pastel shades are fugitive, so choose your colours wisely!
Without wishing to spoil the surprise, I thought they were great fun and have ordered a few colours which were missing from the set - a good purple, turquoise, white and gold. I like to support small shops if possible, so I ordered from: outbackyarns.c... for £1.59 each (plus postage).
However if you are ordering other supplies and want to add them, I have just become an affiliate of Jackson’s. This means you pay nothing extra, but I get a small commission from your purchase. Here is tge link: www.jacksonsar...
If you already use Woodys, let me know your favourite way of using them please in the comments.
Every week I share a tip, trick or technique I wish I had known when I started painting, so if you enjoyed this please like, comment and subscribe. Or if you have a watercolour problem, let me know and maybe I can help?
If you want to have more in depth courses please head over to www.lizchaderto.... I also run a friendly Facebook group: / watercolourstudiowithl... .

I was lucky enough to be gifted a 60 piece set of the originals back in 1990. These originals came with clear plastic lids in a presentation case. I haven't used them much but they are still juicy and full of colour. They blend well with water, baby wipes, and baby oil. The sharpeners are a bit brutal so I always sharpen mine with a scalpel and gather all the stripped off bits of colour and use that with a paint brush. Mine, when dried are pretty much waterproof.

Discovered these pre COVID, loved them straight away.
During LockDown we were able to have GrandChildren visit in the garden, we had great fun playing various games, drawing pictures and trying to write backwards on the window. They were a hit. Definitely the go to crayon, paint stick for my artistic 10 year old GrandDaughter.

Wow those marks on paper dissolve far more completely than some of my watercolour pencils. I'm happy to know ahead of trying them that even the ink of the fine liners will re-dissolve the thick application on paper as well. These look pretty fun!

I was playing around with some low grade watercolors I have and was feeling like I wasted my time. And then I thought...oh, I'll fix them with the woodies! And sure enough, adding a few whimsical accents really helped. Although these are market to kids, they really do feel first rate. I love them too.

the thing is there is no point putting pigment in the bottom inch as you couldn’t hold it, so it does make sense…. you can get pencil extenders for ordinary size pencils, but not for this size, I’m guessing.

They look amazing! I want some! I have a bigger set (I think there are 30 in it) of the Caran D'Ache neocolour pastels and I am very fond of them. I love the idea of a mini portable palette, too. I'd never thought about that before. I will definitely be trying it out, though. Honestly, the "Ooooh!" that came out of my mouth when you drew on the wet paper was unexpected! I've used chunky water-soluble graphite crayons in a similar way. Not quite the same result but it's close. I wonder how they would work with the graphite... Hmmmm! I recently bought some water-soluble oil pastels, too. I'd never seen or heard of them before! I've only ever used solvents and oils with oil pastels previously. Not quite gotten the hang of them yet, but I'm having fun figuring things out with them. I'd bet they'd work well with these, too.
As for the pen, I'm wondering if a brush pen would work instead of the fineliner.

Once more greetings from the continent, and I wish a happy new year, to all the audience ( is that english ??? ) !

It works so fine over pen scetches, but the darks are not very dark.
Because it´s portable, I don´t use the woodies on the way.

Maybe you've already answered this question elsewhere, but I'm very curious about this and have not seen it addressed: Does it matter to your bottom line if we click "Skip" for the ads? I heard we should watch up to at least 30 seconds, or whatever for the shorter ads for it to count. I almost never watch any ad longer than 1 minute but I do try to hang in there for 30 seconds if I like the video producer. Hulo Liz, I know these are NOT for me! No pigment info and they do not go the full length of the stick! I have used the Neocolor sticks for many years and they work so wonderfully! I use the bits from sharpening them into a palette and they work just like watercolors. I have only snapped a stick once, but I am quite careful with them! I have watched quite a few videos on these woody sticks and this is how I know they are short inside the wood body! I have purchased the 10 set for years and branched out to the 15 when I wanted a few more choices and I was able to buy a few colors open stock at my local Drafting supply store! I did get a 30 stick set for a birthday gift last year but I am not using up the extra colors, well not yet! @@LizChadertonStudio thanks for the extra effort! I know that there are some people who truly don’t want their artwork to be considered as fine art or ever worry about it lasting at all! I have even made found art, things put together from trash! I don’t believe that those things are destined to last even to the end of my lifetime. I believe that if I am going to put my desires and effort into something that I can be proud of I should want it to last for as long as possible. If I sell it, I want the customer to be happy and enjoy it unchanging while they are alive to enjoy it as well!
