When Dave Pelz did this he added a couple drops of dishwasher fluid to break surface tension. Years ago I did this a lot, mostly for putting. At which I still suck.
I am very interested in dumping epsom salts in the water hazards at my local courses to aid in ball recovery!

I want to add that Callaway spent over $100 million dollars on a new stage to their ball production line that X-rays the balls to make sure the cores are centered and any that don’t meet their standards are tossed

If it's bad enough out of balance it only takes 24' to miss the hole entirely. Saw this illustrated with a putting machine in a video just today. He also did the float test, and he commented that he'd never had a problem with V1's or TM's but that was uploaded seven years ago. I have heard other comments as to a top maker having core issues since then-and maybe that's what you're seeing. (The GolfWorks)
Spinn the balls when putting them in. Been testing Pro V1, found up to 40% out of balance, per dozen.
I would imagine a 20 handicap golfer, after doing this test, would still be a 20 handicap golfer.
I did this with several dozen 2019 Srixon Z-series XVs and all were well balanced. But I didn't do repeated tests with each ball. That is a good idea. I still have some of them left. Every one of them was balanced. I was impressed.

I did this test exactly with the spin at least 10 to 15 years ago. I did it in my garage where the floor is stable. I got the same results. What I took for it was I will never use a nike ball again because they tested the worst and then I tested the same balls after using them and the nike was also out of round. It made a big difference in my scores. Later I got a device that spun the ball and that worked well and it had a cap that allowed you to mark a line long before anyone else.

I used to do this with balata balls back in the 90s. Back then the center of gravity could be just about anywhere, since the ball had a liquid core with wound rubber bands around it. Nowadays ball manufacturers are far more consistent due to the use of a plastic center and urethane covers. I don't think it's necessary to do this with golf balls any longer.

I have seen videos on this before. I would think that maybe this is only worth knowing for putting but the slope and cut of the grass seems to affect the roll more. Thanks Ajay.

I’ve done this on and off for years and there is something to it. Not sure how this happens during the manufacturing process but it does. Dave Pelz did a test probably 25 years ago where he checked the balls and marked them with a single dot then struck them with a putter head in a fixed pendulum devise that was sitting on a pool table. When the dot was on the top the ball would roll straight. When the dot was on the side the ball would curve to heavy side every time. When I start missing short putts I go back to finding the balance point of the ball and it helps.

I tried this with a bunch of balls. The single worst ball was a tp5 pix. Generally the best we're Titleist and Wilso. Kirkland was also quite balanced.
Too many layers to contend with so that is probably why sown if their “guys” don’t use them!
What is crazy is that this will effect the ball flight and putt roll significantly. A slightly mishit shot could go well right or left if the ball is that off center. I would like to see the off center balls in a machine test to see how offline they go.
Mahalo from Hawaii. Love this video and ALL your videos! I stopped Spining & FLO'ing shafts because of your proof it doesn't work. I have been balancing all of my golf balls for years like this and I have never once had any brand ball NOT float to the exact same location. I believe there is one thing you're missing in this test that is crucial for the ball to spin more freely. You must put a few drops of JetDry on top of the water before dropping the balls in (I prefer this method) or use WD-40 to coat the ball like David Lee does of Gravity Golf (as seen on his UA-cam channel). Keep up the great work...you have changed my opinion on Spin & FLO and saved me a lot of time on installation.
Might have to try the Jet Dry against my method and see what difference it makes.
@@EFGMC It breaks the water tension and allows less resistance so the balancing in the salt water becomes more precise...but now after watching your other video on rolling the results of a balanced ball you may have changed my mind AGAIN if it really matters! The only thing that I can think of that might make a difference is you rolled it on a ramp instead of a putter that "hits" the ball with loft. I have seen a putting machine hit balanced balls and seen how they roll differently when the heavy spot was moved to the side. Again, thank you so much for your honest reviews and help!
WD40 works also but is a little messy as you have to clean the ball afterwards. I hadn't thought of JetDry
I would like to see the inside of the worst ball. Just to get an idea of how off center the core is to the circumference. So far I’ve heard and seen the shock videos of the Chrome Soft off center cores, but I don’t know if what you are testing is necessarily the same thing. And the perfectly flat putting green with a Perfect Putter so great.

Wound balls were the worst! Titleist to be exact. Every year my company sent out 10 to 15 dozen logo balls.
I started using the Hogan/Bryson salt
Test. Out of a dozen there were usually at least 5 or more bad balls and 3 were so far out I took those and put them into the original sleeves and gave them to my friends I played with!!! 😊 so much for

I switched to Maxfli. Excellent and a great ball.
Great Info - waiting for the putting green video, considering the amount of money we spend and the BS the manufacturers throw at us, you would think the tolerance would be much tighter.
Have you done any recent videos on drivers with a 3 wood shaft or a 3 wood with a 5 wood shaft or do a vid with said shafts and heads but going down in half inch increments. Just an idea.
Definitely want to see what difference you can see in those balls with the noticeably heavy side.
Funny you mentioned a shorter wood video. Was just brain storming a 43in driver build video.

I just did the same test on some Titleist AVX’s and some Callaway Chrome Softs and just on three brand new balls from each set and all three Callaway’s were clearly unbalanced and two of the three Titleist’s were good and the third was unbalanced. Really makes me worried about the quality of these high priced balls, should I be happy with 2 out of 3? I’m going to test some more and see what it comes out to out of 10
I did the roll test on my pool table and the different orientations gave dramatic results. Vertical COG hit the middle of the end cushion and the 90 degree balls curved so much they didn’t hit the end cushion but closer to the end pockets. I suspect this test might not have mean much on an actual green or while in the air but interesting nonetheless.
I'd like to do this test again with a better ball launch mechanism and a super smooth hard green.
Thirty years ago i noticed some individual balls were much easier to keep online and in the fairway than others.
I have been doing this for years. It's been my experience that the higher quality balls, like the ProV1s and such are usually very well balanced. The balance issues really come into play with the second tier and lower models of balls. you can still use them if they are off balance, you just need to make sure you are setting the ball down, especially when putting, so that heavy side will roll end over end and it won't effect the line very much.
I would take a look at this though. 7 out of 12 ProV1 were not balanced!! at 64.95 a dozen here in Canada thats not acceptable!! ua-cam.com/video/Zbl0-gONBT4/v-deo.html

Did this with a bunch of balls couple years ago. Does it make sense that when you spin them, the faster they return to the same point the more off-center they are? Does to me as some balls would slowly return to the same point while others would rock quickly back-and-forth and get there right away
Yes, faster motion reflects greater imbalance.
I think you should look at Gavity Golf's video on the same subject. He uses WD40 on the balls to limit the laminar effect of water. Spin rates to the balance point could be different.
Maybe you should add a surfactant to the water to reduce surface tension so they roll easier
Haha love the video and the experiment. But I’m curious AJ, if you don’t think spine and FLO makes any discernible difference, do you REALLY believe this does?! I think both are really interesting. I see both as being something else we CAN control, unlike the golf swing!
This I can actually visualize impacting performance. We will see if it actually does in an upcoming video. Shaft alignment I strongly disagree with on numerous levels. Again I have a video planned for the next couple weeks where we will put it to the test. I could end up being wrong on this and I want to make sure I give it a fair shake. Stay tuned.
Great video as always. My only question is with this test is that if there's an air pocket inside any point of the ball, wouldn't it throw the results because it floats water. I've had a few beers so please tell me if I'm wrong. Lol
Not sure about this. I think even if there was an air pocket, that would change the CG and we would still be in the same boat.
Yes it will cause you to miss putts if the bias sides are placed ninety degrees to the putting stroke, just the way lawn bowls are deliberately heavier one side to the other. Perhaps you could roll them down a stimp meter onto a level piece of carpet to test those very same balls!
Next… is try to put them on a very hard surface to see if there is an impact!

Have you had any experience with Alien Pros grip wrapping.
It’s kind of like wraps for tennis racket handles. No wear & tear on existing golf club grip (grips last longer), and seems like a better grip on the club (and great in wet or rainy conditions). Don’t even need a golf glove. I like them.
Haven't tried them. Are they marketed for golf or tennis or both?
My Golf Spy did a test to show that the balls are def not all the same. They had the robot arm hit all the shots and if every ball was centered they all should be around the same in both distance and dispersion. I believe Titleist Pro V1X had the best grouping but even they had 1 or 2 outliers. Shows sometimes it is the arrow and not the Indian. This was a couple years ago but they did find some had huge differences and a couple shots were 20 yards of difference both left/right but also front to back. So some could be long/short or right/left, even with a perfect swing that’s is always delivering the club back to the same spot each time. I believe they tested both drivers and mid irons shots. Of course the drivers had the biggest dispersion.
Did you end up rolling the balls to see what direction they would move?
Would the one with the 'bad' outer centre of gravity be a straighter ball if alligned vertically on the tee (would only want to use it on a par 3 to avoid 2nd shots into pin
I don't know. Would be a good experiment. Don't think I am good enough to be able to test it myself. Need a tour pro or a robot to get consistent inputs.
Callaway really stepped up after people started cutting them.

Interesting to repeat test after ball has been hit say 5 times. Does the C of G move.
Mark with black sharpie in first test. play 18 holes. Then, repeat the test and mark the COG with a red sharpie.

I usually float my balls in the bathtub, but this is an interesting concept. I would think that these small variances in the balance of the ball would not make a big difference in putting where the condition of the surface of the green also has a large effect on the way the ball rolls and the path it takes. It seems to me that longer shots could be more influenced since they’re just flying through the air.
Going to find out about the putting in the next week. Stay tuned.

@@EFGMC Also, I think there could multiple steps involved where imperfections could be introduced. A "simple ball" is probably not very simple.
Put thise same balls in a ball spinner and see where that line is compared to the dots
Why not buy that ball spinner? I own one and it works. You can’t trick it and if the ball doesn’t return to the original line you marked on it then it’s perfectly centered and you’ll probably never get the same line twice.
Does anyone remember the ball balancer that would spin the ball in a enclosed cover and you took a marker to make a line?
I've had and used one for over 10 years. I prefer it to this system because it more of a dynamic measurement closer to actually hitting a golf ball. Like he said, this method has been around for a long, long time. Modern balls are much more consistent than wound balls but there are still inconsistencies so why not take advantage of that to help with driving and putting?
Couple other people mentioned it. Check Go Pro or something close to that. Problem with it is yes it shows the ball is off, but you can't see how bad it might be like this method.
Been using the spinner markings and my putting has vastly improved….my lip outs are not nearly as frequent as last year! There is a video some where with a guy using a putting pendulum with the balls marked and unmarked…all the balls marked after the spinner went in vs. before….!

Sorry m8 off topic but you have helped me before with a question so I have another one for you.
Broke a shaft right at the club head so the part of the shaft is now stuck in the head I have bought a new shft for it.
I have tried drilling it out can only get the drill bit to so far then it just won't go i have burnt out a couple of drill bits trying to this and I am kinda stuck think I may have totally knackered it any ideas of how I could remove this lip it is stuck on sonthe shaft goes on easily did try to shim it but no joy it's still to slack thanks neill
Is it steel or graphite? If graphite you can take a long wood screw, drill a pilot hole, then screw in the wood screw. Heat the hosel as usual and pull the wood screw end out with pliers and twisting motion. If it's steel, you can use a similar method if you have a wide enough screw. I can also use a drill bit about the same size to often catch the steel shaft and twist it out.
You can buy specialized bits and tools for this from Golfworks etc. if these don't work for you.
@@EFGMC think I have rounded it to a point where there is no end of the shaft showing now so it has like made the inside of the golf head .mm extra thick would have to taper down the shaft to get to fit oh well lesson learned provably just buy a new/second hand one on ebay cheers and thanks for your advice till next time neill
Just finished testing a box I had little confidence would pass. All I can say is test a Nitro Ultimate Distance 15 pack (white). Amazing anomaly or one of the best balanced ever.
Either I haven't been keeping up with the Nitro brand or that is an old box of balls!
Guess it's possible. I got them from Amazon a week or so ago for $13. Box looks new.

They do, but i don't know that you could tell from them how out of balance a ball is like we did here.
@@EFGMC the spinner finds dynamic balance orientation. Finding the static balance point as you are testing just tells you how statically unbalanced the ball is. It will always wobble in real world flight. The dimples help in stabilizing flight.
Do a blind test ask someone to do the test , find the worse and best balanced ones. Just mark them with a number.
Putting results will not change
There will be next to no flight difference either. Again the spin stabilizes the ball.
When the ball is hit it deforms, in flight it is deformed because of the spin makes it ob long not round. Bryson may do it because he is looking for quality control.
I have never seen a controlled test showing balls going off line because of the off center core.
So is it possible a 2 piece ball will fair better and possibly be more accurate in this test since the core is big ?

It would be better to stand on pool table & putt to see effect of out-of-balance golf ball.
The Maxfli Tour balls do this to every ball. They paint the alignment lines along the center of gravity.

This doesn't matter. You can't line it up from the fairway so if it mattered, you could only do it off the tee. Then ask yourself if you knew the "center of gravity was misaligned on the fairway (because you marked it) would that get into your head...it probably would.
Bryson does it or did it and would trash the balls that were off. Of course us regular golfers probably won't be tossing $4 per balls in the trash.
This obviously is why I'm missing 2 foot putts! And I thought it was the putter!
I played my lowest score ever on Thursday using a callaway ball, before always a Taylor made, now was it the ball or me having a good round. Did you just burst my bubble lol
One of the 2 TM balls I checked was good, so I'd go with the good round theory!

@@teegolf I like my method better than the spinner because it shows not only where the heavy side is but how concentrated it is. Then you just line the ball up with the heavy/light axis going up and down.

One thing I’ll say is if you’re buying premium balls, I wouldn’t worry about it too much unless you have a terrible golf swing/ slice. Unless you’re a tour pro and can drop a ball within 10 yards of where you’re trying to land it, I wouldn’t lose sleep over it. In the air or on the putting green there’s too many variables to think this can improve your game. Trust me I spent an entire weekend spinning balls and I can say I still hit both good and bad shots with perfect lines on my balls
We are going to test it out and see if there's any difference. Working on my method right now.
@@EFGMC the only way I would ever be convinced that finding the center of that ball is absolutely 100% beneficial would be if you had a robot either hit the same ball with an iron or driver and or putt it repeatedly and show that there’s is concrete evidence that spinning your ball is worth doing it. I would bet money that most of us past 100 yards would not be able to group any balls around the pin less than 20 feet. There’s just way too many variables. I would invest my time in better golf not finding good and bad balls lol

Tried this with my Canada Cup balls and they are all off.
ALL golf balls will lose shape and balance after being massacred on the golf course. You only need to have about a dozen that are really balanced for putting. And FYI, marking a ball with marker DOES throw off the balance!!! Besides, the dimples on a golf ball in terms of the contact with a putter face actually make more of a difference than the ball being slightly off. At the end of the day, golf in general requires quite a bit of luck. I mean for every foot of putt, your ball will roll over 100 individual blades of grass and just one can cause you to miss it.

Isn't this exactly why Bryson does this. You basically don't play the ones that are off centre. Probably helps if you don't have to pay for them.

I tested today on Kirkland Signature V1 ( green box ) Vs V2
The Kirkland V1 quality is not great and the balance point is bad .
I've never tested a Kirkland but not surprising for any new to market ball to be lacking in consistency.
The MyGolfSpy ball test is probably the most definative ball test which comes to similar conclusions. Titelist being the most consistently manufactured ball.

Now don't get me wrong, this is a very interesting topic. You perhaps should have thrown a cheap ball like us normal folk use in the mix. However, I surely would rather play a round with ANY of them instead of staying home and playing with my balls!
Might do again, with different ball price points. I figured the expensive balls should be the most consistent. If you pay that much, you would hope so.
