Mariah’s placement of the runs are very well executed
Fergie's was the best, she set a standard, she's unbeatable people criticising her just couldn't understand the high level artistry she was able to achieve..... you can't change my mind

Mariah musicianship will never be matched by ANY vocalist. The way her runs always feels like they are a core structure of the song is incredible.
It’s kinda funny/crazy realizing the amount of runs Mariah integrated into her rendition. She did it so subtly and melodically connected with the song itself-it’s like you just hear gorgeous music as a whole and not just her incredible vocal gymnastics. She’s just the greatest of all time. I’m honestly speechless and dead.
Because Mariah has pitch perfect hearing, she knows when extra notes are needed and when they are not

As for the ‘lacking in power’ I think it makes sense musically , it was like a tribute to the lives lost on 9/11.
However the gold standard, in my opinion, for the Star Spangled Banner will always be Whitney .

Well objectively, they are both equally technically good. But Whitney sings more on the emotive/gospel side while Mariah is just more technical.

You really should have included Faith Hill's rendition of the national anthem. Its simple but so impressive. An example of the Nat'l anthem sung right with just enough riffs.

The funniest thing about watching IndyCar is sometimes "The Star Spangled Banner" in variations from absolutely terrible and hilarious to beautiful. The latter category is usually achieved by singers in the military and it sounds stunning, while the first category is achieved by new, young musicians that sounded like they've completely lost the right pitch during their many runs. But props to them for doing it in front of a quite big crowd, I was mentally breaking down just because I had to step up in front of 300+ ppl to recieve my graduation certificate, shake hands with the director and smile into a camera xD
Nobody does it like anyone from the vocal trinity.
A lot of people think Whitney's anthem isn't unique ... it was actually the first time it ever had been performed at that key, at that speed ect... it became the golden standard and anyone that performed it tried to imitate her.. so it's not that it isn't unique, it's just the most covered style. I don't think anyone will ever be able to outdo it.. no matter how many riffs, runs or adlibs they throw in, her rendition was just perfection. I also like Mariah's but it doesn't scream "America" or "star spangled banner" to me, it just sounds like a beautiful song
