  • F & W railtours Peak tour from Plymouth to Uckfield on Saturday 27th December 1986. 45104 came on at Bristol Temple Meads and it seen at Hever heading down to Uckfield, where run round facilities were still available. Return is seen in fading light at Eridge. The class was rapidly being withdrawn at the time but a few examples lingered on into 1988, and one into 1989. F&W railtours were re-named Pathfinder in 1987.

I was on this tour ! I joined at London Paddington. The tour was not advertised on the main departure board, which was not unusual for a tour. The use of the Royal Mail bay platform 0 at Paddington was unusual. The tour was supposed to also have a Class 33 to East Grinstead, but we never made it due to sheep on the line. 45 104 took us into the run round at Uckfield, which was south of (beyond) the level crossing (now long gone). This was the truncated remains of the former LBSCR line from Uckfield to Lewes. I never missed a Class 45 tour if I could help it !

It's absolutely terrible what has happened to the line (except the lavender line and spa valley railway)
