Because real racism and prejudice isn't explosive, it's a sporadic insertion of micro aggressions and passive aggressive condescension. It's why it's so easy to be blind to it, and so easy to dismiss when it's called to attention. The worst racism always comes from well intentioned people.

Even better they made it clear while also addressing it in a why that's not just simply reversed racism... They made it clear that it wasn't "Oh all white ppl are bad... "It's "Jimmy's Father is racist and that's not right." And personally I think it's better that it was Virgil's father that made him see his errors not Virgil himself. It's just a nice change of pace from the normal kids show of "oh the kids were able to fix it so to plot armor" it was a man to man that changed his mind.

And by the end, Richie's dad isn't magically not racist anymore; he realizes why being biased is wrong, and he's gonna take steps to change that, to the point that the episode ends with Virgil, Richie, and Richie's Father are all getting ready to attend a convention so Richie's dad can learn to understand both his son more and be exposed to more diversity. Woke reboot of this episode would have Richie denounce his dad who would learn nothing and would ended up dead or turn into a villain. Richie would also not have equal friendship with Virgil as he would be sorry for his privelege and problematic heritage. Modern lessons for kids is not about building bridges but about revenge and shaming the whites. Those old cartoons are actually offensive to the wokes for DARING to make those kids equal as friends when Richie constantly take advantage of white privelege and Virgil struggle with systemic racism.

I'd say Jimmy was a damn good episode. One that stands out to me was the ending of STAS's Apokolips... Now! episode. You'd always seen the "good guy" wins motif, but this took it way out of left field. You just see Darkseid throw salt into Superman eyes and wounds by outright killing Dan Turpin (think that's the name). Darkseid just murders the human in cold blood, smirks, and walks off. The ending sticks with me cause it was the first time I saw an episode "dedicated in memory" to someone.

Poor jimmy attempts to defend himself out of frustration and everyone ambushed despite him having a valid reason to do it . They did jimmy wrong , at the end of the episode i was so pissed . The part where Richie's father says "I don't believe this I put a roof over his head, feed him three squares a day and this is the thanks I get" is an abuse tactic used by parents to justify their behavior. Children do not ask to be born, that is a decision the parents make and when they decide to have a child that is the obligation they take on. Richie believed his father hated him so beyond what his father is supposed to do as a parent, Richie was afraid of being in that house.

It's amazing how realistic this episode is, instead of showing Richie's dad as an incarnation of evil. He is just someone that only knew problematic black people. Seeing how his own son defends and has a black man as best friend, how Vergil's dad help him even though he doesn't like him and how they are saved by a black superhero. The father sees that his mistake was assuming that all black people are the same.
He learned to judge people for who they are, not for how they look.

There is a difference between Fear and Hatred. In these circumstances they coexist, but that doesn't make him a bad person. In the end he wants what's best for his son. The difference is how people act.. Do they resort to violence or do they keep distance? It's normal to have such a phobia when a majority of crime is done by blacks, when certain behaviors are expected. But it lives in blacks as well feeling a hatred for being part white. Mr Hawkins goes out of his way for those who needed him, he faced political figures like the mayor, and we see in this episode him risking his life to find and save Richie. Virgil lost his mother while she were saving people and Mr. Hawkins raised him full of social awareness and to not sit quiet while seeing something wrong. It is obvious a superhero would come from such upbringing. Virgil were the only one at the Big Bang who decided to use his powers to help others. This speaks loads.

This cartoon is incredible and is really popular here in Brasil, the reason is because a TV company called SBT always broadcasted this animation in the evenings, generally a time kids would go to school after watching this specific animation. And this episode where the racism happens was very well known here in Brasil as well, but the thing is that the animation didn't only talked about racism, it talked about gun violence, bullying and much more. I have a huge respect to the creator of Static Shock, and i wish that DC instead of turning their white heroes black to apear "woke" to a certain demographic, instead started investing more time and advertising with their originally black heroes as well, Static Shock was so good to be just forgotten like this. Wish that this recent rise in his popularity could guarantee him a comeback, i just wish DC or Marvel made black heroes that black teenagers or kids could relate to, and that's exactly what Virgil is.
And the way the topic of racism is handled in this specific episode is just flawless by the way, it's not so exaggerated like what people make it nowadays, it's something subtle but that at the same time is noticeable enough to the audience know what's happening.

I think the issue today is acceptance of the harsh truth. Ppl are more accepting of messages that pre-date 2020s (and ones even older) because they addressed/vilified blatant bigotry. The reality is that's not the whole truth. Bigotry comes in many forms. There is a spectrum. This show is more acceptable because of the blatant bigotry being presented. Ppl don't like feeling attacked. When we talk about subtle prejudice and even systemic, ppl feel like they are being judged. We feel like we're being put on display while watching content. We're watching ourselves and that makes us uncomfortable 😐

I remember forcing myself to watch this episode as a kid because seeing something my family talked about in a cartoon made it real but everytime I watched it, I gained understanding of what I would eventually have to deal with (along with my family's teaching). The thing is, many shows today write the racist character as almost parody with their dialog whereas this guy was written realistically especially with that veiled "whites build, blacks destroy" type comment about rap music saying "it teaches kids to tear down what *guys like me* built". Funny enough that became the talking point for Tucker Carlson during the 2020 BLM Protest in which he said "people like *them* don't contribute to society, they take what *we* build and destroy it".

This is a pretty good depiction of how certain people view others. I remember two sets of parents at after-school care talking rudely next to me (I’ve always had very good English) about a woman who didn’t speak english looking for her grandson. When my grandmother finally found me, and she was the one they were talking about, they turned red in the face and I never saw them at after-school care again 😂. They’re definitely still problematic, but it was still funny.

It's a tragedy and an injustice that they don't make cartoons like this anymore.
Edit: a lot of you are saying "because people would complain that it's woke" either don't know what woke means or are toxic woke themselves and fail to see the irony. The shows I'm talking about tackled racism, personal growth, and real social issues. "Woke" by 2023 standards means for example gay for the sake of gay. A cartoon back then wouldn't need to harp on that and would just feature an episode where a character would be bullied, then you find out they happen to be gay, and then the plot would be overcoming internal and external issues.

I find it interesting how different media deal with topics like racism. Some kinda fall flat in the attempt, especially those who usually substitute racism for something else (different species, different powers, different lifestyles, etc.), although there are exceptions. I found the Teen Titans episode where Starfire is called a racist word in her own alien language and she connects with Cyborg over the issue to be done rather well.
I think this episode of Static Shock did really well in talking about racism. It was realistic in that the racism of Richie's Dad was never resolved. People don't just change their beliefs over night, especially when they've held onto hateful beliefs for a very long time. But Richie's Dad still has a character arc, where he learns that if he wants to love his son, he will have to challenge his beliefs and grow. Hate and ignorance hurts not only yourself, but the people you love.
In addition, Virgil's Dad was able to teach him how to separate Richie from his father. As individuals, it's our own actions that define us, and we aren't beholden to anyone else, including family. Very good episode, imo
