  • Static Shock was an amazing animated series back in the early 2000's. When growing up, I would always get excited to watch Static Shock and as I got older started to look more into the history of the comics from Milestone (plus we're joined by Comic Drake).

Static actually saved my Saturdays. When we were kids, our mother would make the whole family clean the house on Saturday mornings. This drove my sister and me crazy because we wanted to watch cartoons. But if she caught us watching Static Shock, she'd let us be! We're Black, and superhero shows focusing on Black people weren't exactly common.

The beauty of static shock was the fact that the discussion of race and racism was ultimately a tool for the story itself to progress. Unfortunately most modern stories are written to serve a purpose to hold up the racial themes, which doesn't work, and that's why "white by default" stories tend to be more popular despite, technically speaking, being a bit racist, or at the very least very racially biased.

I remember watching this as a kid and my dad being surprised that this was a show that I chose on my own.
I didn't really understand why the time. But as a super girly white girl, with no interest in superheroes, I guess I see why now.
It just goes to show how good the show truly was. You didn't have to look like Static to empathize with him. Or even be interested in superheroes. The animation was beautiful and Static is hilarious. That being said, I can now recognize how big of a deal it was to have someone like him in animation. I grew up in that weird time frame late 90s early 2000s where there was a surprising amount of black representation. That era kinda ended after Thats so Raven was canceled. I'm glad I was lucky enough to be a kid when this was out.

Actually, a lot of Blerds, Black nerds, read Milestone Comics before and during the Static Shock cartoon. It is much like we read Boondocks comics strips growing up before McGruder landed a show on Adult Swim. One of the most poignant moments for me in the comics is when Vergil stops thugs from attacking Rick for being gay. The cartoon definitely had its emotional beats, like Richie's racist dad, the school shooting, etc. But the show only scratched the surface of what Dwayne McDuffie was doing at that time with Static, Icon, Rocket, and other Milestone staples. DC hiring McDuffie was one of the smartest things they ever did. And McDuffie's untimely passing was one of the most tragic things to happen at a moment when Black and creatives of color were finally breaking through the mainstream.

So, I've got to ask this... Did the Virgil/Static Shock origin story getting changed from a gang war accident to police oppressing a "Mostly Peaceful Protest" (Riot) stick?
That was really the only thing that erked me with the reboots from what I remember. Growing up, I had to deal with gang violence's in my area. While I'm not back, I related to Virgil as a school kid in Static Shock from the DCAU much more than any of the other super heroes because it felt like there was so much more lived experience than any others. Spider Man was a close second, but Virgil was the only one who was a single child BEFORE his super hero accident and didn't become a Super Hero BECAUSE of a parent's death.

I loved watching the Static Shock TV show growing up! I think it was the first time the concept of "race" ever appeared on my mental radar, and I vividly remember the episode and scene that brought that to my attention: (spoilers) it was the one where Virgil took a trip to Africa and he commented to Ritchie something to the effect of "Here, I'm not a black kid; I'm just a kid! Is this what it's like for you?" I never realized that was how some people felt, and I never forgot it.
As for the prospect of making a feature film, I'm excited, but I'll say this: they'd better not screw it up, or we will riot!

Honestly I'm surprised they haven't jumped on Static's popularity. Especially with racial tension and social issues of the modern age, Static would be a great character to represent the black community and challenge racial issues of the modern age (I just hope they don't hamfist it and make it so terribly woke). Static deserves more love, but with how anyone besides Marvel is handling their superhero movies...I'm worried the movie will be subpar

They did with that comic book reboot he mentioned. But they went woke just like you said, so it ended up broke. It's sad because Virgil's situation is a lot more unique then the mainstream heroes due to his race as well as the entire concept of the Big Bang during the middle of gang warfare, which made the perfect opportunity to create a rogue's gallery organically within a single city for us to have as a setting.

Static Shock while not my favorite out of the DCAU did do something that none of the other ones did and I still remember being surprised as a little kid at seeing it. When Virgil was starting to get involved with gangs and someone handed him a gun. Not one that looked like a toy or some kind of laser weapon but a hand gun that looks like the real thing.
At that point while I was aware that the other shows and many shows like them showed guns they always looked like a toy and were usually in the hands of people that we thought of as bad people. It just seemed very alien in the cartoon world that it was set in and the characters involved didn't treat it like a joke and Virgil was clearly not comfortable with being handed it.
While I was raised around guns coming from a family that hunts and have shot them before even then while watching it was made very clear that Virgil was in over his head.

The villain in this show named Omnifarious inspired little me to name myself "Neferius" because I thought his power of having all powers at will was cool. (Of course any kid would think that was cool xD) I was young, didn't know how to spell, and when Static asked him what his name was, he replied "Omnifarious!" I thought he said "I'm Nefarious." Thus Neferius. I used that name most of my life. But as you can see, I've kept the erius part on my name to this day even after moving away from Neferius a few years ago.
