      Rode these cars only just twice..once in 1967, when they were relatively new, another years later in summer 1982 while visiting relatives in E.N.Y,Brklyn. Caught a very badly graffitied train @ Lawrence St, downtown Brklyn, as the RR train..Rode to 95th St, Ft Hamilton and back up to Borough Hall. 'A' train to Bway/ENY, 'J' train to VanSiclenAve sta, nr where relatives lived on Miller Ave..Poor R32s were shit-tagged, dirty, fluorescent tubes out..very sad!!

      These stainless steel cars were the first the City bought back in 1964-1965 (?) and they were refurbished with A/C in the late 1980s/early 1990s. They probably have millions of miles of service each (2.8 million to more than 4 million miles). That means they circumnavigated the globe on average 150+ times! They ultimately became, by the early 2000s mechanical nightmares. Some are 58 years old...becoming for many, some of the oldest, longest continued-in-service passenger railway cars in America!

    • @adamzieba8364
      @adamzieba8364 2 роки тому +1

      @@robertgedzelman380 I could not resist the temptation to go a bit off-topic. The story of these cars reminded me of a similar story: EN57, a Polish-built EMU designed for commuter transport that first entered service in 1962 and was mass-produced until 1993 with 1412 units built. About 300 of them remain still in use after various refurbishments.

    This is a great catch! What historical footage captured in this video! Not only are you capturing a New York City subway car being pushed on Old trolley tracks in the middle of a street but you're also seeing the retirement of the long running R32 cars. It is very sad to see these retired. These were fantastic well built american-made cars that provided a great service to New York City Transit riders. They will be sorely missed. Ripr32s. Again thank you to Mr real fan for being able to capture this treasured moment and train history.

      Those tracks were put there to allow freight trains to service warehouses along the Waterfront if you look in Los Angeles where the big ditches you can see on street-level all the different sidings and there's got to be dozens or hundreds of them same thing for New York you can also tell by the shape of the buildings especially out in Los Angeles the really great thing is that I believe those First Avenue tracks go over to where the railroad barges cross the trains over to Jersey

    We saw them driven on trailer-trucks over Broadway in Upper Manhattan (188th) back in the early 90s when they were coming into service after refurbishment. They looked pretty nice and shiny at the time but they were short, noisy and rough. At the time the only high standard was the R44-46-type 75' cars, which had been problematic enough, but at least they were quiet and had pleasant wallpaper. It was really a big change in subway standards when the R44-46 type came in - combining the greatest subway with its speedy four-track lines and rolling stock with an unprecedented standard of, well, luxury.

    The R32; the very definition of classic NYC subway. Show me a movie or TV episode made in the 80s and 90s where scenes in a subway station or elevated line didn't at least show one shot of them. There might be but I don't remember any. They are, or were, a touchstone of my teens right into my 30s. I really don't recall a lousy ride except for being pushed in with a pile of people. I work in the Industry City area (36th St, DNR station) and have seen new cars come on the system from the spur line running next to the BQE off ramp, but I have never seen any pulled down into the Army Terminal.
    Is the intent to show the cars off in one of the buildings, or is there another yard there for them to be stored at? It would be a sight to see them inside. Great building to tour and this would be icing on the cake.

      Hello from England. As a layman I can't help wondering where the power to drive the train comes from.
