Here we see the first four R32s that are slated to be taken off of MTA property and scrapped being transferred by NYNJ Rail from the South Brooklyn Railway 2nd Avenue Yard to NYNJ Rail's 65th Street Yard. NYNJ rail operates street-running trackage over 1st Avenue in South Brooklyn. Once they arrive at 65th Street Yard, they'll be transloaded to flatcars and brought out of the city to Ohio for scrapping.
These four cars, 3878/9 and 3928/9 were out of service for a while. 3878/9 had been partially stripped for several years and had become de-facto parts donor cars. Enjoy this rare view of the end of an NYC Subway car's life!

They served well. When introduced, I was ten years old. The Budd company built a quality product that lasted nearly sixty years in the tough New York City environment, arguably the toughest subway environment in the world, running in the only system that runs 24/7, 24 hours per day. Even these cars, on their way to the scrappers torch, still look good despite their long years hauling passengers. I'd love to have one of the MTA New York City Subway plaques that adorn the car ends. Sad to see these faithful subway cars go.
Budd Created Quality products that ended up putting them out of business
Wasn’t they built in Philadelphia pa at that budd plant?
By any chance does anybody in the comments know about our Lord and savior Jesus Christ. If not plz I would recommend seeking Jesus he loves you💞✝️
@@joshy5677 kinda impossible not to know about that guy since he's shoved down our throats by people like you constantly!
I miss Budd.
Don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened. Farewell, old soldiers. You served the lines well.
Well said Lucas
yep
13:05 damn I've been spotted lol
Great footage.
Oh lol

Hello from the UK. "Retired R32s" I hope that my retirement is better than this. I am hoping for better than being dragged through the streets along a rail and taken to a scrap yard!
So sad seeing these r32's going to meet their scrapping. I've had several rides on these cars...the A and the C. RIP
I just want to say thank you for your dedication to railfanning and to this community you built. I don't know a lot of people who would wake up and film trains, as much as they love them, for half a day.
That is so nice of you to say!! Elated that you enjoyed the video :)
I remember them on the A,C,E,F,N and R train. They have a unique design to the body, my last R32 ride was in 2019 on the C and I didn’t think they’ll be gone now. R32’s built tough💯
That is why the R32 cars should have been kept in the New York City Subway system until the R211 fleet of cars arrive.
@@captainkeyboard1007 That is not necessary.
@@TheRailLeaguer I understand. The R32 cars were SMEEs. Although they are reliable, they do not conserve electricity. The New Technology cars from the R142 through R179 do conserve electricity because the electric current changes from DC to AC and the traction motor power goes into inverters. On the SMEE cars, the electricity from the main switch box goes directly to the traction motors, thus consuming more electricity from the contact (third) rail. The rectifiers in the substations have to work continuously in mean time without failure.
the moto was "ROOM and AIR FOR EVERYBODY HERE 😁
The R32’s served faithfully on the A, C & E line for years. 😩😩😩😩
Rode these so many times, they will be missed.
I rode those a lot as a younger kid, I enjoyed riding it because of the way the exterior looked.
@@ciscokid516 They’ll be greatly missed.
@@someonee3186 I’m going to miss looking out the front window lol
I love them too but good ridens, they caused so many delays in 2017-18 on the A & C
They're in good shape, could've stayed in service longer.
In terms of structure yes, but mechanically they had the worse MDBF rate when they were still in revenue service
Yes if they could have fixed the conductors cab, it was cantankerous going form train to train, that was a real workout. sad to see an old friend go, as children we remember them .... 🤔
yes though they are now sitting in the middle of the ocean ;-;
@@FakeWebsite the reefing program ended years ago. they got scrapped
So sad seeing these cars go… they were a huge part of my childhood! 😞😢😢
hooiii
Thank you for the fantastic tribute to the R-32s. Like Mr. Torres stated, I was 9 when the cars were brought in via the New Haven/LIRR Parkville interchange. I remember seeing the SBK taking the cars via McDonald Ave on the trolley tracks to Coney Island Yards for preparation to enter revenue service. I also remember my father (RIP Dad, I MISS you) taking me to the Kings Highway station on the "F" line to catch a ride on the air conditioned cars. It was heaven, seeing the R 1-9s running. Those cars had a special sound as well as smell when they ran. Time passes way too fast. Thanks Again .
I remember riding a r32 on the J from sutphin blvd to canal st in 2018.
Will never forget my favorite subway cars.
NOOO PLEASE R32s DONT GET SCRAPPED STAY GOR LONG I will miss you😭😭😭😭
Goodbye R-32 cars. You will be missed. A good quality product from the Budd Company in Philadelphia.
Nice video! It’s cool seeing subway cars on railroad territory
it the New Orleans farewell-lurch for Trains in NYC 😕
DJ Hammers, you did an excellent show production. It was the next best thing to being there.
I'm going to miss them, even though i never rode them, they were a train that didn't have a door chime. You see, these trains just keep coming and going. R46 is next in like a year or 2. But the R32s, we miss you. Farewell, R32s. Fly High, buddy
So sad! Awesome coverage!
For me this marks the end of an era. These trains are almost as old as I am. I was about 7 years old when these cars started coming online. At that time I hated them because they were too bright, too shiny, too quiet, too new, and too nice. Back in those days (and right to the present day) the cars I love(d) were the R1's - R9's, the R10's, R12's, R14's, Low-V's, and the BMT Type D (Triplex). Although long retired I still love those cars and fortunately some have been preserved as museum pieces. As time moved forward into the 1980s and 90's I started developing a strong appreciation for the R-32's. They weren't so bad after all. They sure stood the test of time and really earned my respect as real workhorses of the transit system. You have to respect any piece of machinery that can provide almost 60 years of hard service under some of the roughest, toughest, meanest, and most brutal conditions imaginable. They performed well from the beginning right on up to these final days and could still perform if they had to. These days I rank them right up there with all my favorite cars mentioned above. I love the R32's and wish them a happy retirement. Yeah, it hurts to know they will be scrapped. I do sincerely hope that at least a few can be preserved. It would be a shame if they scrap every last one and preserve none.
Firstly let me say Nice Work on making the video. Secondly although I'm 50 now I lived in Bensonhurst Brooklyn on west 7th street just down the street from the Avenue U Station till I was 5 years old & I just used to love seeing those R32s go cruising through the hole in the ground in my Backyard!! I find it ironic that the Redbirds were introduced to the system well after the R32s but wound up being retired from service well before them. Moreover those things look as fit for service & duty today most likely as when they were even introduced. It upsets me a bit to see them go especially when you take into consideration that when they engaged the power on these things the only sound they made was caused by the forward progress being made on the tracks where as as for these newer models they always seem to put off a distinct & annoying hum. Somebody will have to explain that 1 to me 1 day as to why that is. In closing I further offer you up a Historical fact. Unless I'm mistaken I believe the corrugated metal the R32s were made from was from out of the Old Air Force Hangers. Although I'm sure that just like the Red Birds some of these will be saved for their Historical value but I must say it truly sickens me to see them go especially when the newer models are technologically inferior many times over as compared to the R32s!!!
Thank you for filming and sharing this historic (albeit sad) move. Any way to know when/where the R32s will be floated across the Hudson? That would be insane to film/photograph!
I can believe have many people are commenting on the "R32" I will miss the "R32"😌 its was so Roomy the Rolls Royce of classic trains and on Friday nights there was room for everyone, they had the huge commercial fanning system blowing :) it was cantankerous for the conductor double duty that's for sure, hope they refit them and bring them back ;) Saying Good Bye to an old friend 😥 the scrap yard and torch😳 ohh i hope you keep a couple of them for history sake
R.I.P. R32 Brightliners, the subway cars i rode both growing up going to and coming from Fulton Mall shopping, and going to and coming from work at Brooklyn Community Services
While the R32s retire and some are scraped, aside from that, I love your style of Railfanning! It's always fun to watch trains of different kinds and the operators doing their job!
❤️ 🚂 🚃 🚃 & 🚇
Thanks!!! So glad you enjoyed!!
Goodbye R32 Cars Thank You For The Memories After 58 Years
8:26 nice job! Got featured on CBS Saturday morning
There's been a solid variety of good content around this historic departure, thank you for your contribution!
Just a thought: given that a fair amount of retired equipment seems to find a temporary home in Canarsie, is it fair to assume that some of the R32s will find their way to the waterfront via the Bay Ridge Branch, or is there a logistical matter I've overlooked? Thanks again and more power to your lens! \m/
I’m gonna miss the R32’s SOOOOO much!!! 😭😭😭
Oh how nice of them to ship me a 4-car train set right next to my house! I get to play with it like a toy 😃
Now our old subway cars going to subway heaven 😭😭😭
I will never forget the r32s I remember writing them on the c
Best subway cars ever built. Along with the R62 on the IRT lines
So long 32s. You were a great train to operate. The workhorse of the fleet. 😪
nice vid ! Well built units. I was thinking too, its something we will never see in Toronto, given the wider width of all the TTC rolling stock that wont work on mainline CN/CP track TTC i think has to float everything in and out of the property's now.
Many years riding those!
The MTA seems to want similar looking trains for both divisions now. We got the R211 and the R262 which look the same and even painted the same. The only difference would be the divisions they would work on.
I gonna miss riding of my favorite subway cars.
RIP R32’s, 1964-2022. They’ve served the system for so long, yet they never got a chance to even outlive the Queen of England.
I did not know subway cars could couple to freight cars and engines! Same track gauge also.
Well, at least I still have some R32's in service on OpenBVE. Along with many other long retired cars. And many new ones too. :)
I can't believe these cars are being scrapped for good. They were in service for a long time.
Where do the subway cars get off MTA trackage, to connect to the NYNJ freight rail? The freight rail runs parallel to the N line?
the R32 was the first subway car i rode in when i was 4 or 5
Damn they look mad different what there where RIP they will be missed godbles
Awesome yet sad video
What’s that clicking sounds that seems to be coming from the locomotives?
Those R32s had a lot of space inside.
Seems like the new ones are tighter.
BTW, on the railroads, these trains of about to be scrapped rolling stock are called "Funeral Trains".
It feels - looking at the 4-digit numbers on passing cars - that in some of these I was riding or they were definitely passing by me while I was at the platforms waiting for another train... Seasoned railfan, I’m used to notice and remember 4-digit car numbers since I was a child watching light rail trains in my town. Even though R32s appeared very outdated and bumpy when I moved to NYC in mid-90s (compared to newer longer models used along with these ones) in the way they were bumping hard and noisily against each other while going over poorly maintained NYC rail infrastructure, it feels a bit sad now seeing these cars finally go after my 20-years experience around different NYC subway lines😞 I literally and vividly feel now - watching them go - as I’d be sitting on badly overheated grey painted metal benches along the yellow walls inside these cars in the winter as the heaters were installed right underneath, it was quite a butt-grilling experience (even light presence of paint-burning smell could be sensed) on some of their famous grey benches🤓 It was veeery WARM though)
Are they going across the harbor to NJ then NS is gonna pick it up from there?
We Miss You So Much R32 Train Cars 🚗
I remembered that I rode on an R32 once in 2017 or 2018
On the (C) Train Ahhh yes the good old days
What route did they take that tracks were there on the streets? How and where did they transition from subway to freight tracks?
Virtual Railfan UA-cam channel has some of the shells from this set in their grab bag posted on March 18, 2022. They were tagged along the way up state.
If those old cars could talk, imagine the stuff they have seen over their decades of service...
Subway meets railroad. Taken out the same way they were delivered.
Are any of these being saved for garbage collection trains? I remember the BMT STANDARDS being used on garbage collection trains in the 1960s during midnight hours.
Lived in NY most my life. Never been on subway.
So sad that the R32's are Long gone Rest in peace My friend
they will be missed
There is a 8 car R32 H train at Canarsie yard been there a year I've been observing it for over 4 months now I have many videos on my channel. I'm hoping that others go see it and record it
Someone please make a compilation of 32s back in the day And present day
I am going to miss you forever now my R32 trains 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
I’ve seen videos from 2014 of Metro North trains being towed by CSX to Ohio for scrap. Is the same thing going to happen with the R32’s?
I missed those R32 Subway Cars :(
Will they be transported by truck or rail to Ohio? It's interesting how the disposal of retired NYC Subway cars often happens so far away from NYC. Back in the reef program days, they shipped barges out as far south as Georgia.
I grew up next to the Budd Train Factory in NE Philadelphia and I currently operate Budd cars on the PATCO High Speed Line. My childhood dream came true. Sad to see these cars get scrapped for new junk that will last half the r32 lifespan.
The new cars can definitely last as long as the R32, as have other cars that have come before it (several R33 cars are used for work service).
@@TheRailLeaguer You think so? I'm talking about the brand new cars putting into service. I just dont think they build them like they used to. But I respect your opinion. I guess time will tell.
by the way dont dispaire some might get sold to other countrys as well they might run on the royal orient express out by citigare and the tashs ma hall
Diesels that pulling Train Very cool Ditch lights for street running
It still seems weird to me that they were cleaned and polished to the point they looked practically new only to be scrapped. Anybody know the reason? I sure at least a few of them were on the last R32 revenue runs, so they were cleaned for that maybe but they still look like they had just came out of the washers and polished just a day or so before being sent on its last trip to the scrappers.
Using the old trolley tracks?
How many of these are going to be kept, if any? And if they do, they need to keep the old TA logo on them.
Philadelphia had them budd subway cars too.until they upgraded too Yamaha subway cars.
Philly has Hyundai Rotem cars, not Yamaha. And since, Hyundai Rotem has gone out of business.
Cool catch. Just curious why are the escort cars needed
To keep idiots from driving straight into the side of a moving locomotive lol
Is there gonna be a video of the workers actually scrapping the cars?
I thought they usually sink the subway cars in the ocean.
They used to do it
its so sad to see these go, i just want them to keep them one more year so they can be fully retired on the 60 year anniversary of the model
We can do them in the Transit Museum in NYC and that's good news
Great work! When's the last time SBK was used for interchange? Interesting how they rigged up the locomotive air to the R32s.
What was up with the flour hoppers at the beginning? Are those being unloaded in the old Bush Terminal yard?
Yes, that was the Bush Terminal. I am a New Yorker who grew up in NYC.
Sorry to see them go. If transit wanted to make a little money on the side, they'd sell the seats, roll signs and other pieces as souvenirs and memorabilia....
Greatest cars of all time. They look like they could go another 60 years. Stainless steel looks a million times better than the M7s on the LIRR which started to rust on day 1.
@Lighthouse in the Storm Yes.
I remember them when they were new in 1964. They were not as colorful as the R33, R36 World's Fair IRT trains.
May we have a moment of silence for our fallen R32 units.
im gonna miss the R32s
I’m gonna miss the R-32 !

Just one more month and it will officially be one year since the R32’s retired 😔
Are they gonna preserve at least some
That is such a sad sight..... :(

TO WITCHID:
I DON'T REMEMBER A/C ON R32 CARS. IT MIGHT HAVE BEEN DONE LATER. I NEVER LIKED R9 CARS BECAUSE ( BECAUSE AMONG MANY OTHER THINGS) YOU COULD ONLY GET A MAXIMUM 50 POUND BRAKE, AND ONLY 25 POUNDS AT A TIME. 25 POUNDS, THEN LAP POSITION, THEN ANOTHER 25POUNDS. THE ONLY FAST BRAKE WAS EMERGENCY BRAKE. WERE THE STANDARDS ON THE LL LINE? I DON'T REMEMBER, BUT LL LINE
HAD UNIQUE CARS. ARTICULATED CARS WERE NOT IN SERVICE IN 1968, BUT I MOVED THEM IN CONY ISLAND YARD. IN 1968 MOST OF CONY ISLAND YARD WERE TOWER CONTROLLED SIGNALS WITH A FEW HAND THROW SWITCHES LEFT.
SIGNED,
OLD M/M, TSS
i was privileged to ride them.
I'VE SAID THIS BEFORE.
I OPERATED EVERY CAR IN THE MUSEUM BUT GATE CARS. I OPERATED "Q" CARS WHICH WERE MODIFIED GATE CARS.
THE R32 CARS WERE THE ABSOLUTE BEST CARS OF ALL THE DIFFERENT CARS IN THE SUBWAY. THEY WOULD FLY THROUGH THE SUBWAY AND THE BRAKING WAS SO GOOD,
I COULD STOP THAT TRAIN AND YOU WOULD NOT KNOW IT STOPPED. NOT EVEN THE SLIGHTEST BUMP. SOMETIMES A CONDUCTOR WOULD BE AFRAID TO OPEN THE DOORS BECAUSE HE WASN'T SURE I STOPPED THE TRAIN. THEY WERE RELATIVELY SIMPLE AND COULD BE BEATEN TO DEATH AND STILL GO. JUST ADD AIR CONDITIONING AND KEEP THEM FOREVER.
THE R10S WERE THE 2ND BEST, GREAT SPEED AND BRAKES.
KEEP ALL TRAINS SIMPLE AND DURABLE BECAUSE WHEN THE MONEY RUNS OUT AND TRAINS CAN'T BE MAINTAINED, SIMPLE WILL KEEP GOING.
SAVE COMPLEXITY FOR SPACE TRAVEL. I WORKED THERE FROM 1967 FORWARD.
SIGNED "OLD MOTORMAN/TSS
Interesting. It's nice to hear an operators perspective on these trains. One question I have is when they performed the overhaul on the R32's didn't they add air conditioning onto some of them? Or perhaps I am thinking of a different car.
As a long time rider (from the mid 1950s as a kid on up to the present day) I would have to say my all around favorite's were the old R1's. Something about the incandescent bulbs, the paddle fans mounted on the ceilings, their overall appearance, and, most memorable of all, the sound they made as they accelerated out of a station, really did it for me. Right on up there with the R1's, the BMT Type D cars, the LOW V's, and the Q Types were also my top favorites. My all time second favorites had to be the R10's followed by the R12's and R14's.
Funny this is, as I mentioned in a previous post, is that I disliked the R32's when they first came into service. They were just too shiny and bright and too quiet and smooth for my liking. But over the years I came to like them as well and these days the R32's are right on up there with all my other favorites.
So you’re making the case for retiring the R32 train cars?
I remember when they were new.
Check out my comment above in the comments section!
Looks to me like it went through city streets
Can mta diesel electric locomotives work outside mta property because the r32s can fit with no problems?

There is a pair already saved for the Transit Museum.
3360-3361, i believe.
