Same here, I remember going to Gamestop and buying this game for my friend's birthday, having absolutely no clue of what the game was like. My friend and I discovered the split-screen feature with bots, we absolutely loved it. Played it on a small 15" TV and had a blast. I got it a couple of years ago for my own PS2 to replay it, and the nostalgia is strong.
the new version doesn't look cell-shaded to me, but I'm not up on the latest 'techniques' or technology. As a comic artist sometimes less detail is more, and for me the older character models are more effective, allowing the audience's imagination to do the heavy lifting and 'fill in the blanks'. Character models can suffer from an uncanny valley effect the more detail you put in, especially with comic art, the situation for which I think applies to several of the newer versions here.
they just have some really poorly made visual filters going over the game, the original had the outlines physically modeled in using a technique where you'd take copy entire model, grow it, invert it and texture that black
It is technically cell-shaded, shadows are still solid blocks on the characters. The new one just divides the shade into more nuances compared to the one unified block it was in the old XIII so it looks much less obvious, especially on top of the more complex texture work.
They are definitely overusing the black outlines in the remake. They should have tried to match the original. The original also has better colors in my opinion. I can feel the atmosphere more there
Even if this update is really satisfying it would still be a huge shame that it took two more years since the game's release to finally have something worth the 2003 game. That being said, if lessons are learned and the public accept it, maybe we can get past this and hope for a sequel. One that will not go through the same issues as this remake.
I really like the original's style and I think it looks more like a comic than the remake, that said, the remake still looks good and I'm rooting for it because I really want them to release a sequel and finish the story.

Things the new developer need to fix: 1- Add in weather effects from the original 2- Add in Scuba divers 3- Allow us to carry weapons over to the next level 4- bring back boss music for boss fights 5- Add in the explosion shake from the original 6- More weapon sound echolations. 7- Add in ambient sounds from the original 8- Remake the original introduction instead of just have a FBI guy watching it 9- Remake all the cutscene to motion comic ones like the original 10- Add in enemies screaming as they were shot and fell off the edges from the original 11- Change the enemy who said "Freeze! It's payback time. You won't get away this time." at Brighton Beach from the nerdy green jacket one to the black orange shirt one just like the original since it is voiced by a black guy
Just give us the original with the same textures but made fit for 4k resolutions. No graphical changes needed. Just make it look as good as it did on the TV's back in the day.
The graphics in the second remake looks fine to me, it is obviously a step up than the first remake but there are so many other aspects and features that are missing or needed a overhaul which erases the identity of this remake from the OG XIII.
If you read the comic, you'll see it had thin lines and almost a painted look that the remaster was going for originally. So I think it was a deliberate decision that they just didn't communicate properly.
I've stayed away from this title since the release, but you sold it to me! This is one the rare videos that talks about what this remake has done well. Aside from the technical issues, the work that was done on the textures and scenery is very impressive. I like the attention to details, like Jones appearance being faithful to the comic (as a long-time XIII comic reader, I've always found her old design weird) or the very comic-like spotlight effects.
The worst part of remakes, is that they're usually unable to see the difference between and artistic-decision, and videogames of the times technical limitations; they think the reason things were left out is inablity, over the games choices artistically.
XIII Classic is still the king, that remake was so mediocre if i'm being honest, i appreciate them trying to fix it but you can't save something that was already pretty bad, the graphical style in the remake just didn't work
It's proof that more isn't always better. The remake had characters and locations with more polygons, more detailed lighting and as many props as you can fit on screen. But it doesn't stack up against the simple, stylish, well thought out visuals of the original. As nice as it is that the remake does the bare minimum to be counted as a functional game now, this is still so far below standards set by the original.
i really think theres issues with how Vibrant this game is, especially in the desert it's a pain in the eyes. 100% agree with the weather effects missing, you can see the repeating texture in the distance. i would've just had the character move at 100% all the time with no sprint (old school) I think a few mods will make this game a neat gem.

I am only going by memory but what I remember is that the thirteen is like a deep state of thirteen people who I think controls America or has bad plans for America. I remember a last boss fight taking place killing what looks like kkk members but they are like cultists or deep state people and there are thirteen of them and your character was like investigating them and pretending to be one before the start of the game where you have amnesia while wearing a false face and going by a different name than what you actually are so your character truly has an identity crisis. I remember the last boss fight talking place in a icbm room with nukes or something about to go off and if ou shot one green gas orr something would shoot out. Anyways at the end of the game you're on a boat being celebrated as an "American hero" and if I remember right you get betrayed by someone who shoots you and you're throw off or fall off the boat or something. Your character's name may be Jason fly because I remember while sneaking around a military base overhearing soldiers talk about a guy called that and your pretending to be the guy who owns the bank account maybe a mr. The original game took me a short while to get used to, but when i did, boy oh boy, it was amazing. I'd rather see a sequel in the original style than a rehash of the original in a so called 'polished" style, shame they have cut out various weathers , like snow, rain and fog. It made the atmosphere/feel of certain levels really moody in a good way . I'll still be giving the new one a whirl though. I loved this game.
The original looks like an actual comic book, with Archer tier good stylization. This remake-remake looks like Saints Row copulated with Borderlands with the twist of it being its sister; resulting in a god-unholy child that needs to be put down. Even Postal 4 make my eyes bleeds less.

Did they fix the glitch on Solo Campaign. Cause on one board I got stuck & the guy would not blow up the back door with the rocket launcher on the snow mission
ok, when this remake gets a couple more remakes guess it will come close to the original. As of now, nah Also - loved the distinct weapons sounds of the original - could tell those apart from anything else. New sounds are just some stock boring "shotgun.mp3"
Fun fact: the shotgun SFX from the classic game is the same stock sound effects they used for the rifle in Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow & Chaos Theory's multiplayer mode.
They should have produced a sequel to the classic instead of remaking it. I loved how they adapted the comic into a game but they should really continue it as the story demands it.
Thanks for the review, I was looking to see what the game would be like as I never gotten to play the original, bought this game for £1.59 on PS5 during the black friday 90% off, can't complain so far 😅

Imo 2003 just like classic Resident Evil 4 really holds up. I wish they would have done an additional final mission concluding the story with #1 and not necessarily an entire sequel. I don’t think 13 is viable in a SaaS/Looter Shooter world we live in.

2:57 the 2020 looks like rvb the one with felix and locus no armor i forgot what season it is but it looks exactly like that literally
Thanks for this overview of Far Cry 13
People in the comments just trashing the remake fail to appreciate it being closer to the comic source.
Just bought this game on sale on PlayStation store exited to play it
Have they added the weather effects and fixed the game even further?
How do you equip the grapple hook
Is the update only available for the PC version?
They should have produced a sequel to the classic instead of remaking it. I loved how they adapted the comic into a game but they should really continue it as the story demands it.
I always thought the dude in the red suit had his hand in his pocket when I was small. Now when I look at it, I see
Thanks for the review, I was looking to see what the game would be like as I never gotten to play the original, bought this game for £1.59 on PS5 during the black friday 90% off, can't complain so far 😅
The FBI is involved in a conspiracy against the president? Now why would anybody think this?🤔 XIII was a great game I played on the PS2 back in the day. Such a good game and I'll pick this remake up.
I prefer not carrying weapons over as it gives you reason to explore. I typically stick to few guns but this allows me to use everything.
I mean, with Unity Engine, you can use 3 different Render Pipeline in a single scene.
The best example of this Unity Engine 3 Render Pipeline usage, is in Genshin Impact & Honkai Impact. A perfect Cell Shaded game that looks smooth and sharp at the same time
They need to make an FPS/PvP game that looks like this with the ability to aim down sights. It would be amazing.
Game reminded me of the Bourne identity
Of all games that could get a remake, this is probably the only one that never needed one to begin with.
After they first released that scuffed remake I was convinced they would abandon the game. So happy about this will definitely pick it up now
Which version is the PS4 copy?
Still waiting for that sequel
Doubt it but they surprised with the new update so who knows
I really want an Ultimate Spiderman Remake.
Mr. Rowland?
the question is, can you still die from fall damage while walking down steps?
Never happened to me at all in my playthroughs
@@Nick930 I still have a very vivid memory of playing this game with friends and one of them was at 4 health and died while running away down some steps. Good times. Thanks for the vid!
OMG I wanted to play this game so bad when I was young and I wasn't able to find him, I didn't know they did a remake I'm so happy
I don't know but the classic version is my favorite so far I played it at release on my gamecube and I played the remake 6 month ago and I don't have the same feelings about the graphic overhaul 🤔 it's a fun remake but it's not a must play when you have the original
Imo 2003 just like classic Resident Evil 4 really holds up.
I wish they would have done an additional final mission concluding the story with #1 and not necessarily an entire sequel. I don’t think 13 is viable in a SaaS/Looter Shooter world we live in.
Completely different game from when I played it at a young age in a fever dream
Another great video when will your batman video be released really looking forward to it
Still in production. Got tied up with other things but I'll be returning to it soon
Holy F i completely forgot about this Game, probably because when i played it i smoked a real lot. It comes back now in small bits.. Damn, thank you i loved that Game
ADS and running completes destroys the fast gameplay which I loved about XIII. With ADS and running it feels just like another modern shooter in a bad way.
Might get this when I get a PS5, looks fun
Really wish they would add a way in the remake to change the graphics back to the originals like the halo remasters
The origianl had great white sharks under the ocean does the remake feature them
The weather effects being void in the 2nd edition is a good thing no distruption by atmospheric climate
Still not possible to save?
