Still - the remake has you find the actual weapons themselves, which I think is a much better way to introduce these weapons to players.
Concur'd. It's... _very_ easy to watch some guides on the game and say "Ugh, flamethrower? No thank you!" or just think "I don't have the money for this, I need NODES" But this way, you are GOING to get that weapon and you are GOING to try it.

Also the shocking thing is the complete lack of discount for anyone who has the original game already. €60 for some extra bells and whistles when all the hard work has been previously done is just bs. Think of all the new AAA games someone could get on Steam at discount for €60.

So unlike most games, let’s say for example, Nathan Drake in Uncharted, he isn’t constantly spouting random dialogue to help the player at key moments. The most you will hear from Isaac are his grunts and heavy breathing which is super refreshing and only immerses you more as a player.
There were a couple of moments where Isaac flat out says the solution to a little puzzle. So they do that here after all, but not to the extend as other games.

@@Nick930 Lol you have it good. I forgot to specify that I play on the Xbox Series X, which doesn’t have a performance boost for the original dead space
Something about the original makes it feel like the noises are surrounding you and echoing from all sides making it feel closer which is why I think I like it better than the remake which sounds a bit more distanced but I really do love the heartbeat effect that was added to the remake.
@Lasumex Aranethon The heartbeat is one of those things where I'm sort of indifferent to. Like it is neat and all but it can sometimes get a little annoying, that's probably just me though lol
Dead Space was the first game I played that had its score adapt to what was happening on screen, and was truly terrifying in its application. Jumpscares and fighting sequences were accented by intense scoring that would fade in naturally, and fade out as soon as the coast was clear. The layering in with atmospheric SFX, foley, screams, and gunfire was also very ahead of its time; something I feel that the remake is sorely missing. It was also PIVOTAL to understanding when the player was in danger or not. With the original game devs communicating how hard it was hard to portray an enemy coming from behind you with such a tight third person angle, sound design was an important communication tool for understanding danger. It also worked to deepen the games tension ("why do I hear tense music even though I don't see anything?") with little to nothing visual to cause it. The quarantine comparisons here are so stark. When the quarantine begins in the original, a strong asynchronous bass drum banging (which sounds like movement in vents) can be heard along with the also rhythmic whirling of the alarm, creating a mismatched pattern of sound that creates a more dynamic guttural reaction, heightening the anxiety and tension. Like an unescapable march or war drum, spelling out your demise. In the remake, that drum banging isn't in the scene, and just has the higher pitch rhythm of the alarm. It's a small difference in the big picture, but for a game that had such a lasting impact in its sound design, it's pretty disappointing to see that stripped away.
Only thing I wish they'd retain from the original is how Isaac walked. In the original Isaac is terrified, so he's walking around always paranoid, hunched over a little bit like he just wants to cower in a corner, but upright enough like he has to keep remindjng himself to be brave to find his beloved. In the remake he's walking pretty normal.
a nice detail i noticed at the end of the game tho is that if you look really closely, he’s subtly shaking a lot of the time (look at the plasma cutter to see it best)
@@khogs im at the engineering section and he's already got a bit of a shake to him when holding the plasma cutter lol you can even see his trigger finger twitching like he's just waiting for another necromorph to come around the corner.
I find it the opposite. In the Remake Isaac is very stiff, like he is ready for anything to jump out at him, unlike the original where he looks pretty relaxed.
If you REALLY wanna see the power of the peeling system, try using the force gun on the necromorphs. It’s pretty dope how you can see their bones and stuff
I love how true to the OG this is. It feels like it was made with so much love and attention to detail. As someone who loved these games, playing this remake felt so familiar yet so new and it is just very well done.

SO few games from the PS3/360 gen hold up at all in terms of gameplay, many being next to impossible to enjoy anymore due to the advances in fluidity of modern gameplay. Yet, somehow Dead Space still plays astoundingly well
@@Grandmastergav86 I wouldn't say totally unnecessary however I do wish there was even a small discount for players who already own the original because while it looks great $80 + tax for minor tweaks and improvements on already good graphics for a game I've played like 4 times is a bit much. The most noticeable change is the improved lighting.
The developers (specially Glen Schofield) took inspiration from not The Thing and Event Horizon, but also japanese and european horror films, all for the sake of crafting the atmosphere. Then EA Motive took the atmosphere to a new level, but without sacrificing too much. If the remake succeeds, then we might finally get Dead Space 4 out of the freezer.
8:46 the original lighting for that particular scene looks so much better because in the original it flashes the necromorph then it keeps moving to show the silhouette. The remake just keeps light on it. There’s something about the original that kicks in a primal sense of fight or flight.
you can tell all throughout the game(if you've played it) that they rarely use flashing or flickering lights... It really takes away from the experience... He still does breath, it's just quieter and gets louder during tense situations. Also the new walking animations are stiff but i think they fit better for Issac who's walking around in a giant heavy work suit
You can hear his breathing quite well actually, played the game with some decent headphones and you can hear both his breathing and his heart beating too, especially after running for a few seconds or after finishing an intense fight
One thing I like about the classic game is that the necromorphs would roar and sprint towards you with their claws flaring all over the place. In the remake, they don’t do that at all. They will run at ya, but they aren’t as menacing.
Imo the sound for old version is better , his breath and footsteps making us really feel the terror of being alone in the environment , waiting for enemies. But the lighting work on the new remake makes the corridors as creepy as it always has
I feel like the sound in the original was louder, more inmersive and forced (in a good way) to be scary. In the remake i feel it quieter, more realistic maybe but not so inmersive like in the original. Maybe its just the nostalgia. Everything else looks amazing.
I didn’t play the original and it sounds better than the remake. Weird that they decided on this route. I guess to be more “realistic” but that doesn’t always mean better
Sound design in regards to the atmosphere as well as voice acting were leagues better in the OG. However the remake made major improvements to the sound of Isaac’s tools (save for the ripper, of did it better) The contact beam’s charge up sounds and looks as beefy as the damage it does.
I have to disagree with you on that. Grab some decent pair of over the ear headphones and twerk the sound settings they sound beefier and more powerful like the original...or you're simply getting older thus your hearing is getting weaker
i was just thinking that. The originals had such a deep resonating thud sound when you fired them, they sounded like you were launching big hunks of super heated energy at an enemy and it was just powerful. the plasma cutter kinda sounds a little too pew pew instead of the original boom boom
Great comparison! I LOVED my playthrough of the remake. I don't believe you touched on it, but motive studios also implemented a new AI fear system that has thousands of random events, jump scares, and enemy spawns that could happen during a playthrough. I noticed getting more of these when I slowed down my playing style. It really helped my stay on my toes and keep immersed
Something not a lot of people have been noting too is some of the subtle changes to keep it in line with Dead Space 2, and not just zero-g. For instance, in the original, if you killed an enemy it immediately dropped an item. In the remake, you have to either shoot or stomp the corpse to get them to drop an item... the same as it was in Dead Space 2 and 3. There is so many subtle improvements that make it definitively better, even if some aspects of the original were better than the remake.
audio from the original is definitely the only part I think they did worse with the remake, Isaac's breathing, the overall depth of the sound in the environments, overall, the sound just had so much more going on with it.
I actually vastly prefer Hammond's voice acting in the original, and the sound design as a whole. It feels so muted, and tame by comparison so far. Great VA by Hammond's new actor, but the original just carried the vocal performance of the game for some reason.
Finding the weapons instead of offering them with new chapters feels very much like Doom. I like this change a lot. The biggest thing I noticed about this game versus the OG is how much darker the Ishimura looks in pretty much every section. It's a good design choice but there are actually certain scenes from the original that look better to me. But just a few. Overall the new one looks way creepier. I'm imagining a DS2 remake and them recreating that one really pretty skybox from that game, the one outside a window. I can't remember which chapter it was from as it's been a decade plus since I've played it but I think some of you know what I'm talking about.
I like finding weapons because it makes people actually check out and use other weapons instead of just fully upgrading the plasma cutter XD that thing was OP. There's a reason One Gun was an achievement you could unlock. It's very easy to do
I was such a massive fan of Dead Space, and even though I can see why people love and respect 2, the original is the best for me. I will buy this game eventually but I will probably wait till it is discounted. These improvements look interesting, switching things up without taking away what was great. The comparisons you do are both interesting and useful, I also love your Documentaries.
Didnt the old issac show more hurt and heavy breathing when low in health rather then the remake, i swear he looked like he was actually trying to keep moving rather then the remake looking like he was always ready to fight even when health was low
This has always been my go to channel for graphics comparison. No other channel has topped it yet. No needless jokes, no meandering, just a long well detailed vid on visual & sound.
Necromorphs sounded way more threatening in the original, especially the Brute and Exploder. In the remake they all sound quieter. The combat music is still great thankfully.
What I think the remake captures perfectly is the way that we remember Dead Space. It's pretty easy to think back on a game that came out so long ago and remember it looking much better than it actually does. The remake really just makes the game look and feel like how I remember the original feeling at the time. It made me fall in love with the franchise all over again and I can't wait to to play it through again.
I'm amazed at how smooth controlling Issac feels, compared to the original. It's often easier to do more than one thing at once, like strafe walking while aiming, stuff like that.
Absolutely. The clunky controls were one of the few blemishes of the original, while the controls in the remake are absolutely perfect! Perfect sensitivity and precision and the seamless walking speeds are perfect too.
@@Jigsaw407 wouldn't you say that actually detracts from the realism though, in a sense the clunkiness was part of isaac not being cut out for the job he was in at that time

They put so much into the detail of the remake that I heard even the sounds he makes during the iconic stomp change throughout the game to show Issacs slow descent into madness

While the new game graphically has much more fidelity of course, there's something about the original's ART DIRECTION and style I still prefer. It's so distinct. The new game (and many newer games) try to go for more and more realistic when I think too much realism can get in the way of unique art design and tone. Everything's more vibrant and contrasts well in the original, especially in its lightning. I know the remake has apparently improved lightning but I keep seeing these comparison shots together and thinking 'man the original just "POPS" more. To me the original still retains the king of atmosphere.
Not to mention they botched all the sounds desgins for the necromorphs. Those twiggy ones with the exploding arms don't scream when they spawn anymore and I keep getting sneaked up on, it's pretty frustrating
The remake looks great, but some of the animations of the original feels to have more impact, espeacially with the necromorths. The foot stomp also feels weaker. Dunno, maybe it's just me?
What I noticed with the sound design is, Isaac had to breathe louder constantly because he has no voice. That was the developer's way to build up a connection to the player.
Haven’t watched the whole video yet. But playing some of the remake I noticed it seems Issac doesn’t have any different walk animations depending on his health.
Something that I noticed is that necromorphs don’t run towards you in the remake. In the classic game some necromorphs would run towards you as soon as they spot you and that’s freaking scary and stressful
@@finnish_hunter There's a point where they can't really make everything 100% realistic due to possible annoyances. I like the new lore and all, but i still feel the OG flowed so well from chapter to chapter and Peter Mensah's voice acting for Hammond was some of the best ive ever seen in a video game. All in all, i personally don't think this masterpiece needed a remake, BUT i am glad to see it getting recognized for its greatness 15 years latter.
I love how well they handled this remake. It looks so damn good and they revamped everything. I actually like the majority of changes they did (letting Isaac talk, remaking rando teammates into actual people) because it makes the game feel more natural. Original is better. One of the dopest things about Issac is how his helmet glows that bright blue. In the remake it’s so muted it draws no attention it looks so bad
One thing I like better about the sound design in the original is the breathing from Issac. It just sounds more like a human breathing in a metal helmet vs the remake sounding simply like a machine hissing.
i agree but i feel like the remake sounds more realistic for what is supposed to be some sort of futuruistic suit that covers ur entire body like that.
@@fruitygranulizer540 I get that but I just feel like for a horror game it’s a bit more fitting to hear his breathing, it adds to the unnerving atmosphere
I don't understand why did they make hallways and some other spaces bigger/wider. It takes away from the horror, 'cause in the original you would feel claustrophobic. Also, new dialogue and voice lines sound very bland, even in the intense situation. Only Isaac sounds convincing, guess because Gunner Wright already has experience with this series and his character
I remember the ambience of the original spooked the bejeezus out of me as a kid. The new ambience actually made me look over my shoulder as I went through the medical wing. The sound in this game is nuts.
I like the way there is no longer plasma cutter ammo drop in middle chapters, it forces player to use other guns and ripper and contact beam guns are so good.
i can't be the only one who finds older games from 2005-2016 era scarier than more modern games, graphics wise the less realistic and dark tones are more eerie than newer horrors. (my opinion)
It's too generic it goes for the typical scary tropes, darkness and fog. OG's visuals didn't rely on one aspect of story telling but all of them. It's the same with movies, all the pretty special effects in the world don't mean anything if it can't tell a good story without speaking.
Good video, my friend. Thanks. Audio in Classic is better for me. Also, I like the lighter variants of gaming, like in Classic. It is too dark in Remake. However, the Remake looks way better.
I know what you mean, I prefer the overall look of the original, even though I always turn down the gamma to make the corridors darker. Audio in classic is far superior.
imho, the OG had much better color grading (light orange + teal VS oversaturated orange + green) and better sound design. I also don't like what they did to the characters, and find the remake way too dark. Feels like every environment is the same black hole.
I personally think the new one's graphics look amazing, but the old one had scarier looking monsters and Nicole was more attractive. That's just me thought.
To be honest, some things looks better in the classic original. For example the helmet light glow. Some (e.g. breathing) sounds. Also some characters like Isaac and Nicole. And some ambient lighting and color looks better too. But also vice versa. Anyway, it's a good remake. But not worth 80 bucks like a game made from scratch. I think I'll wait for a sale. Then with patches, if necessary.
Sounds reasonable. I'm having a blast with it as somebody who played and loved the original. Generally speaking, the remake looks fantastic. Much better. I like all the new content as well, and the new and expanded zero G stuff. I'm glad I started playing ASAP. I'd do it again its great!
The only thing I find disappointing is how much Isaac seemed less terrified and more like his personality in dead space 2. Like the way he walks, shouts and stomps. In ds2 he's traumatized but more confident, and furious, he takes it personally. It doesn't feel quite as right in the first game because he's an everyman caught off guard in this nightmare and I remember feeling so scared because he seemed so scared and the cathartic and scared screams of his stomps matched that. I think him being a silent protagonist also made it easier to wonder what he was thinking, and it kept the game from making cheesy quips like resident evil 4 or other contemporaries. His voice acting is great and a lot of the time it works but sometimes he seems just kinda frustrated when before he was, well, speechless
A detailed as the remake might look, I find that too much detail makes it hard to see what is going on because everything seems so cluttered in modern games
This is a good point, while the game does look really nice and the team did a good job, readability goes down with all the extra clutter. Things that don't help and stuff I can point to: Large amount of repeating panel cut lines and samey details, bright metal edge wear on everything creating more highlights than needed, excessive specular reflections on almost all surfaces that make the environment look greasy and shiny, etc... Also, the extremely dark and dim atmosphere doesn't help, it hides all the hard work. I'm nitpicking here but just some things I notice that give credit to the OG design.

They also brought back the cool stomp dialogue from 2 and 3. Really nice touch
Love this comment horizon forbidden west is horrible with this 😂

Something about the original makes it feel like the noises are surrounding you and echoing from all sides making it feel closer which is why I think I like it better than the remake which sounds a bit more distanced but I really do love the heartbeat effect that was added to the remake.
@Lasumex Aranethon
The heartbeat is one of those things where I'm sort of indifferent to. Like it is neat and all but it can sometimes get a little annoying, that's probably just me though lol
same
Especially when it comes to some of the actors. I miss the OG Kyne...
@@khogs im at the engineering section and he's already got a bit of a shake to him when holding the plasma cutter lol you can even see his trigger finger twitching like he's just waiting for another necromorph to come around the corner.
he does have that when hes holding his gun out and he shakes quite a bit.
I find it the opposite. In the Remake Isaac is very stiff, like he is ready for anything to jump out at him, unlike the original where he looks pretty relaxed.
I agree 100%. In the remake his steps feel faster and lighter. In the original he stomps so hard and slow like you can feel the weight of the suit.
If you REALLY wanna see the power of the peeling system, try using the force gun on the necromorphs. It’s pretty dope how you can see their bones and stuff
Yes!!
Force gun was one of my fav guns in the original. It’s even better now because of this feature alone lol so cool.
The flamethrower peels them, and so does the prototype stasis you get for doing one of the side quests
I love it. Especially if they survive, so you then have a skeletal necromorph coming at you. Looks even more nightmarish.
I love how true to the OG this is. It feels like it was made with so much love and attention to detail. As someone who loved these games, playing this remake felt so familiar yet so new and it is just very well done.

But the lighting work on the new remake makes the corridors as creepy as it always has
Theres actually a whole thing called the ALIVE system, isaacs heartbeat will slowly speed up when running or jumpscared
the remake does the exact same thing lol. you probably didn’t play with headphones so it’s harder to hear.
However the remake made major improvements to the sound of Isaac’s tools (save for the ripper, of did it better)
The contact beam’s charge up sounds and looks as beefy as the damage it does.
This speaks to a wider problem in both the game and movie industry that no one knows how to sound mix any more.

If you've been sleeping on this game, this is your chance to experience it in a new and awesome way. Its truly an amazing game.
audio from the original is definitely the only part I think they did worse with the remake, Isaac's breathing, the overall depth of the sound in the environments, overall, the sound just had so much more going on with it.
To be fair you can still hear all of this in the remake they just made it way quieter so you can only really hear it with headphones

The Government Sector?
I’m thinking of the window from the room just before the elevator that takes you to Daina.
I like finding weapons because it makes people actually check out and use other weapons instead of just fully upgrading the plasma cutter XD that thing was OP. There's a reason One Gun was an achievement you could unlock. It's very easy to do

Playing the remake currently & it's really been a excellent experience all over again. Enjoy my friends it's really good. 🔥
Yeah sound is awesome specially with the headphones you need to play it in PS5 with 3D audio and trigger feature
Was waiting for this from you before making a purchase decision! Thanks so much for the work you do! ♥
I must be weird because I actually prefer the graphics of the original. The remake looks too clean which make the atmosphere less scary.
It's too generic it goes for the typical scary tropes, darkness and fog. OG's visuals didn't rely on one aspect of story telling but all of them. It's the same with movies, all the pretty special effects in the world don't mean anything if it can't tell a good story without speaking.
Sound is way better in original. I can already feel atmosphere in those short clips and getting scared in original. In ramake its like whatever...
Yeah, especially when it comes to the sounds of the necromorphs, they were better in the original.
Remake is miles ahead of the original. Thankful for the remake, such an improvement on almost all aspects of the game
Absolutely holds up to this day
Whether it's the 08 or the remake this series is a classic!
Hopefully RE4 doesn't disappoint
Wonder if they'll remake ds2 because if they do, I sure hope they'll have the mp for it as that was quite fun to play
Omg ds2 remake multiplayer, only we can hope
imho, the OG had much better color grading (light orange + teal VS oversaturated orange + green) and better sound design.
I also don't like what they did to the characters, and find the remake way too dark. Feels like every environment is the same black hole.
nah the OG's color grading is very much of the era and looks super ugly. It has the late 2000's Unreal Engine 3 look
@@bitbat9 You don't get it, that's all
I personally think the new one's graphics look amazing, but the old one had scarier looking monsters and Nicole was more attractive. That's just me thought.
Nicole looks like Skylar White in the remake
@@flaming0sniper0 yeah, huh? I say they should use Kristen Bell. Throw her in there. She even has video game experience.
The original is a masterpiece. Sound design was better in the original.
Damn original looks incredible shows you how much we didn’t need this 70 dollar remake
The Pulse Rifle's rotary alt fire saved me once when I was surrounded and no one will ever understand how amazing it was. Shame they removed it.
Alternate bombs now great too
Sound is so much better in the original.
His voice acting is great and a lot of the time it works but sometimes he seems just kinda frustrated when before he was, well, speechless
minute 3:00 original monster prying open the door looks more realistic than the remake ngl
Sounds from original and acting seemed better in my opinion. Still gunna play it though :)
A detailed as the remake might look, I find that too much detail makes it hard to see what is going on because everything seems so cluttered in modern games
This is a good point, while the game does look really nice and the team did a good job, readability goes down with all the extra clutter.
Things that don't help and stuff I can point to:
Large amount of repeating panel cut lines and samey details, bright metal edge wear on everything creating more highlights than needed, excessive specular reflections on almost all surfaces that make the environment look greasy and shiny, etc... Also, the extremely dark and dim atmosphere doesn't help, it hides all the hard work. I'm nitpicking here but just some things I notice that give credit to the OG design.
I choked to death during the asteroid part because the walls were so detailed i didnt see the oxygen stations mounted on them lol
