    100% agreed. The fundamentals of BJJ that we learned 20 years ago are not the fundamentals of today. Movements, framing and finding the calmness during the fight should be the fundamentals of BJJ

      Very true indeed.
      I am all for sports, because that adds the playful element to the game. It gives people drive and motivation.
      But in the pursuit of those goals, the safe and healthy way to get their is most often forgotten.

    Tried Jiu Jitsu for the first time 2 days ago. The feeling of being out of breath and just having another grown adult laying across my abdomen was probably one of the most uncomfortable physical feelings I've ever had. At one point I had to tap just to get a breath while the other guy was a black belt just patiently laying in side control.

    • @YAMAZAK1
      @YAMAZAK1 2 дні тому +1

      I had exactly the same experience! In my first time after 15 years to training, I had to tap just to get a breath when the guy on the 100kg position and I´ve ever had breathe wrong for 4-5min.
      Perfect advise, do not focus on techniques, but in breathe and "body notion".

  • @hwillis8

    Add to that beginners should learn a basic guard pass, basic escape, and basic submission and focus on doing all three during a roll. While it’s true that techniques take time to develop the best time to hone a black belt level technique is during white belt. I focused solely on armbars and knee cut passes when I was a white belt and those are now my go to moves.

    • @WimDeputterBJJ

      Some simple ideas to focus on are probably a good idea.
      I just believe there is nothing basic about any techniques. A focus on the highest precentage options is probably a good idea.

    My advice for beginners is usually focus on learning to handfight and when to have an over or an under hook. Also keep your knees close to your elbows and guard that space religiously.

    • @kbanghart
      @kbanghart 8 місяців тому +1

      Keeping your knees close to your elbows, do you mean that when they are further apart, your opponent can attack your middle easier? But then you go to guard, right? Or maybe im way off lol

    • @WimDeputterBJJ
      @WimDeputterBJJ  8 місяців тому +4

      I think it is an important skill. Especially the over- and underhook rules.
      I focus more on endgame offense and defense early on with beginners cause I think it makes the game overall safer and it is less complicated for beginners.

    • @WimDeputterBJJ
      @WimDeputterBJJ  8 місяців тому +3

      Jiu jitsu is all about controlling the space between hip and armpits.
      When you keep your knees close to your elbows, you create a diamont which your opponent will have a hard time passing.

      If you breath wrong, you cannot be mindfull. If you are not mindfull, you are more invested and attached to the outcome than the moment.
      Disregarding the reality of the present in pursuit of your goal (eg. doing the sweep you want instead of the sweep that the opponent's posture and weightdistribution tells you to do) is how you get injured and injury people.

      @@WimDeputterBJJ Beginners are not able to understand concepts unless they have learnt a set of basic techniques. It is like learning a language. You can study grammar endlessly but it is a waste of time if you do not combine it with life practises and real phrases ("techniques").
      I remember Björn Friedrich from Frankfurt around 2007/2008. He was very enthusiastic about teaching concepts instead of techniques.
      By 2011/2012 he admitted that he went back to teaching techniques to beginners because they would not understand the concepts without solid knowledge of techniques.
      Of course that is different once you train purple belts and higher.

    • @WimDeputterBJJ
      @WimDeputterBJJ  9 місяців тому +1

      You misunderstand.
      The language comparison doesn't really make sense if you think about it a bit deeper.
      Grammar indeed doesn't really make sense before you learn some words.
      Words however don't make sense without a human first having the ability to speak at all.
      A language is actually learned, vocabulary and grammar, at the same time through intricate play we call "conversation".
      Besides vocabulary and grammar, there are many more "invisible" parts that need to be mastered; intonation, rhytm, timing, loudness and all of these actually come gradually but at the same time, the one feeding of the other. Vocabulary is just the easiest most distinguishable part of language development.
      Just like in Jiu Jitsu the technique that actually succeeds is clearly visible.
      Let's imagine you teach a beginner a guardpass. First you need to explain the concept of a guard and the concept of a pass.
      Without that, there is no sense to teach a guardpass.
      Why would you need to pass the legs a beginner will ask?
      Showing a basic guardpass, is like showing a particular shade of blue and calling it blue while forgetting the unlimited amount of shades thar exist in the palette.
      Let's say you let the beginner start in guard and he has to execute your particular example of a pass you taught him or her that day. The beginner will try and fail or succeed. That process may eventually lead to improvement. But very random and usually slow and a bit risk. Because the beginner lacks control.
      The beginner starts in a guard on top where he or she does not know how to behave. You teach him a pass. He or she will try to execute that pass to then arrive in another position where he or she does not know how to behave. And the same can be said of every step between the guard and the actual pass >>> there is no control.
      What do you teach first then?
      You teach the concept of control.
      Control means very simply:
      -engage and shape your body in such a way that your opponent has a hard time to move = connection
      -stay on top
      After those prerequisites are met, you can show a particular example of a pass. Making sure that the student focuses on control every step of the way with the goal of the pass (or sweep) just a general pointer to give the game a sense of direction.
      Therefor concepts always over technique.
      Play (="Talk" or "fight") and the "techniques" / "vocabulary" and patterns will emerge by themselves through examples and problems the partner (in conversation and fight) will present to you.
      You need the prerequisite of control, stability and connection before any technique makes sense. A limp opponent can be pushed over with only a fraction of a technique.
      I really invite you to our gym to see how we do things here. For free.
      You will be surprised to how our classes our run, universally liked and how quick people improve. I promis 😊

    • @WimDeputterBJJ
      @WimDeputterBJJ  9 місяців тому

      It is definately hard. But a lot of the hardness comes from the (at this point) ridiculous ruleset where very little is allowed.
      It is so limited these days, both in allowed techniques and time allowed to work certaib grips, that more than any other grappling art, it became a game of strenght.

And when you cross trained It was the biggest compliment when a BJJ fighter knew you could throw, so they just sat down to start from guard.

      Not really.
      The 10 000h rule was merely a suggestion by Malcom Gladwell in his book "Outliers".
      While the book is very good, the 10 000h rule is not based on actual science or a universal rule.
      Furthermore, spent time doesn't equal quality of learning. You can definately spend a lot of time and not improve at all.
      Spending a life time doing Krav Maga or any art without actual live rolling, would still make you suck at fighting.
      People's brains vary as well.
