    Ah yesssss some of the ones you mentioned bring back memories of seaside or at least trick us into thinking about these memories. Escape and Issey are two super powerhouses. It never dawned on me that calone or similar notes lasted so long and lent to the strength of these perfumes. Well done, Dr. Smith!

      Yes! Scent memory is so important!
      I have no experience of calone, it's only what I've read, but it's certainly regarded as something that is virtually eternal in terms of the timescale of the longevity of scent notes. ❤️

    This was so interesting! I still get confused when fragrances list "salt" as a note, because to me salt doesn't really smell. I appreciate how you explained it's probably the impurities along with salt that give us a scent association, like salty air, etc. I would love to hear your thoughts on ozonic vs. solar notes, as well. The idea of solar notes was interesting to me until I smelled a few fragrances with solar notes listed, and they tended to smell like tropical florals and maybe some aldehydes. I'm probably over simplifying the concept though lol.

    • @dr.claire.perfume
      @dr.claire.perfume  3 роки тому +1

      Yes salt in pure form has no smell!
      I have a video on solar notes, I'm not sure whether you've already seen that or not. I don't have one on ozonic notes though. I think you are bang on with solar notes, a lot of the more modern ones are based on odour molecules given off by tropical florals. Aldehydes are also slowly becoming more popular again after they were deemed a bit old school. I predict a mini-resurgence...
      Which ozonic perfumes do you enjoy?

    • @ndo355
      @ndo355 3 роки тому +2

      @@dr.claire.perfume Oh thank you for mentioning your solar notes video! I'll check it out. And speaking of aldehydes, I know there are some in newer fragrances that don't give off that classic Chanel vibe, but smell more like detergent to me. I never get "sparkly champagne" vibes from them, just a headache lol.
      Hmm, I don't know if I have any fragrances that list ozonic notes, but sometimes earthy or metallic notes remind me of the air before it rains...so I guess that would be the closest to ozonic that I can peg down? There is a fragrance oil called Qatar meets London that reminds me of that ozonic/mineral quality.

    I have a blue smoothie with aloe pulp that I wanted to give this fantasy watery, crystalline taste. I had been using flavors of pear drop, corossol, elderflower, jasmine and cactus to create this sort of gustatory water accord. For the fruit base I was using cacao fruit, and I was even looking for safer molecules associated with pool smell (chloramines) for the clean note. I think chemistry can sound like something inaccessible otherwise. These ketones that the company was studying were cyclic ones so they likely smell very different to the aliphatic ketones that I give as examples, but it was the best I could manage 🤣

      I have only smelt lab ketones so I am not sure how distinctive the diabetic thing is. Is it smell it, know they need a special diet and a shot of insulin right away?! Or is it quite subtle? I remember part of my exam was to identify a compound I'd been given. I got marked down for not smelling it (it was a ketone). I thought if I went around smelling random lab chemicals without knowing what they were I'd soon be dead but no, apparently if I don't, I lose marks 🤣

It has been my signature fragrance as I have not used another. since CK stopped producing and selling, I have stocked up as much as I could. I have been looking for another perfume that I can replace Escape with. So far I have not found anything. Your video was the first one mentioning And that convinced me I am watching a true expert. My favorite water/wet fragrance is Monsoon by Dame Perfumery. It’s a whole experience that ends in a watery plunge. It’s never citrus or “blue.” It’s the wettest most unique, yet not challenging fragrance I’ve ever worn. My favorite watery floral that also happens to have some ozonic properties without being too metallic (I don’t enjoy metal fragrances) is Chanel’s Cristalle. Since I only have a decant and it’s discontinued, I blindly bought Issey Miyake’s A Scent, but it didn’t have the same ethereal feel :( For anyone that has a chance to try on Cristalle, spray it in wrists and maybe behind the knees as part of its magic is catching it in the air.

    Hi Claire, I have just purchased a mix of ISO E SUPER, AMBROXAN & CALONE mixed with perfumers alcohol. Whilst this smells nice it is not my favorite smell as all I get is a heavy chemical smell as opposed to the nice sandalwood smell of previous ISO E SUPER purchases. I have purchased a fair amount of perfume oils which I like, would you recommend applying the oil on my skin then spraying over it with the CALONE mix to perhaps elevate the sillage of my perfume oils as they sit close to the skin? Thanks.

    • @dr.claire.perfume
      @dr.claire.perfume  3 роки тому

      I would say that calone smells better when more dilute, as it can be pretty dominating! I do not know how it works with perfume oils as separate mixes and I've no idea whether it will make the oils more volatile and therefore more noticeable. I think you will have to experiment and see what works. Sorry I can't be more help! I would love to know the answer to this though, it is very interesting question. Please let me know how you get on with mixing / sprayover.

    Thank you for this video! I smelled a body wash called Method Men's Sea and Surf, and to me, it smells like an uncut aquamarine gem. It seems sort of salty, but cool and refreshing. • @dr.claire.perfume
      @dr.claire.perfume  2 роки тому

      I have heard Costa Azzurra Acqua described exactly as "frosty marine" but I've not tried it myself. I'm sure there are cheaper options though. I've not got anything with that vibe myself. I do have some with ambroxan in that feel fresh and slightly salty marine in the background, but have other stuff that is more prominent in the foreground, namely chant d'extase and Kenzo World. Hope that helps! Thank you so much for watching 😊

    Do you think salt might be added by halogenated compounds? I know bromophenols contribute to the smell of algae and shrimp.

    • @dr.claire.perfume
      @dr.claire.perfume  2 роки тому +1

      Possibly. I know bromophenols are food additives so there may be crossover if they are skin safe. They would have to be at really low concentrations though otherwise they would likely not smell very nice! Dimethyl sulphide is also a big sea like smell but I'm not sure that's used. Really I think Fragrantica could do a great fragrance wheel to explain how related some of these fundamental chemicals are and how seemingly diverse smells are created from very similar molecules. I think that would be really interesting. Thanks for watching ❤️

      @@dr.claire.perfume I was juuuust watching a discussion of the history of perfumes and how they used to be applied to clothes instead of skin.
      I'll have to look into the dimethyl sulfide thing. Sulfurous compounds tend to give more savory or animal notes from what I've seen so far, but I can see some overlap between aquatic notes and that.
      Thanks for putting out such great content!!
