Hey Claire, great video. This may have been mentioned already and I may have missed it, but the reason why some of the modern synthetic musks smell "clean" or "white", or like opening a tumble dryer or ironing a shirt, is that musks are used quite extensively in laundry detergents and fabric conditioners, often together with synthetic "fresh" white-floral aromachemicals. The human sense of smell is greatly influenced both by our cultural context and by olfactory experiences and memories built throughout our life, which is why most Europeans today associate certain molecules used in cleaning/washing products with cleanliness and freshness. In the example you mentioned, habanolide does not actually smell metallic, but simply similar to the different musks clinging to the damp laundry that are being heated and evaporated by the hot-iron. (A heated hot-iron actually does not smell of metal, as solid steel itself does not smell of anything.) Only our deep olfactory memories tell us that this is the smell of hot metal. People who have never seen a hot-iron in use before will smell habanolide as neither "hot" nor "metallic"; in fact they may not even be able to consciously smell habanolide at all if their olfactory system has never been primed to distinguish the smell from other background smells. In a similar way, vanilla does not smell "sweet" to people who have never eaten a sweetened vanilla dessert or cake in their life; and ethyl maltol smells specifically like cotton candy only to people who have experienced real cotton candy before.
Yes absolutely, associations are strong with smells and you can say similar things about people who've never smelt other things. Associations are sometimes very cultural, for example, chrysanthemums and death or lilies and death. This is part of why I find gendering of fragrances really unhelpful. Thanks for watching 🥰
Musks are tricky since they can smell so varied, like you said. I have a soft spot for those 80s/90s style white musks. They are pretty and clean without being full on detergent-like, and not super floral. I know they don't smell sophisticated, but the cozy nostalgia is appealing. Thanks for this primer on musks!
Yes, I love the clean ones too, it is a very fine line between clean and detergent-like! I guess because that is exactly what musks like ethylene brassylate and galaxolide have been used for, as well as for perfumes. I really have a very strong nostalgia for Body Shop white musk. I've not tried it recently but I would love it to smell like it smelt in the 90s. Thank you for watching! 🥰

Yes, it's quite strange to think now isn't it? I can't imagine deer musk selling now at all... But I guess people loved fur too back then, it was somewhat normal to exploit animals. Yes, musk is definitely up there on the sexy scale. 😊

In the seventies until 1984 I have often smelt the real oily animalic musk, if you want to know EXACTLY how the real animalic deer's musk smells like, you should try Ambraliquida by L'Erbolario. Ambraliquida is a cruelty-free scent, has non-animalic ingredients, BUT it is exactly how deer musk in perfumery smells like: warm, sweet, powdery, slightly pungent, little bit dirty. Loved the video and the wonderful scientific explanations, you look fabulous and you are very intelligent, congratulations, new friend here. P.S. I do NOT work for L'Erbolario, I just live in Italy and found in this brand, that kind of musky scent I used to love in my youth.

Body Shop’s White Musk was holy grail status for me in the late 90s and early 2000s. I’ve heard it’s not the same anymore. Ellis Myth reminds me ofit though.
Yes, I went to try it as I had feelings of nostalgia for it but it wasn't how I remembered it. It has lost its identity. Everything has sadly been reformulated at the body shop, I think that's been part of the problem, along with exorbitant prices now. I will look into the Ellis Brooklyn. Thanks for watching 🥰
I love vintage perfumes, so I would be really interested in smelling some old style animalistic perfumes. I also love both original alien and body shop white musk. Funny enough I've heard a very young youtuber saying that bodyshop white musk reminded her of sweaty armpits. It astonished me because to me it smells so clean.

I've had the opportunity to smell actual musk deer musk (musk tonquin) tincture in the past and I do love the odor. There is a modern product called tonquitone produced by IFF that is a really good facsimile of it. Ambrettolide is also quite similar but less animalic.
I've not smelt it, but I would love to. I can imagine the more modern musks are more of a range of clean to dirty, icy to warm, fresh to nutty, powdery to creamy than ever before. Perfumers need that range to be able to make what they want to. I absolutely love ambrette, I wish it were used more! Thanks for watching ❤️

I think I have smelled animalic musk, yes. When I was a young child in the 60s-70s my relative asked if I wanted to smell her perfume but said be careful this has musk in it. Do you want to smell it anyway? I was just a toddler/kid but said yes. I remember it was a nice experience and I have had good associations with the idea of the smell of musk since. I have not worn many perfumes through the years and am just now in my 50s really getting into it. I do love Narciso Rodriguez For Her. I'm glad we can have a nice smell without killing animals for it now.
Yes animalic musk is quite different to the cleaner ones that are more common now. But there are certainly some examples of vegan musks that are closer to the animalic versions. I think Narciso Rodriguez for her is now considered a classic fragrance, one of those bookmarked examples of musk in fragrance.

So.... musks. You've answered some of my questions (thanks Claire!) and prompted others. Isn't that always the way, though. Wouldn't it be lovely if the musk chemicals were disclosed when fragrance shopping? I've identified a dry down scent I find repulsive, and it's a metallic, brassy note. So far, I've traced it to notes for florals and musk. I do find it most often in older perfumes from department store houses, and it does remind me of vintage clothing from the 40's-60's that I used to wear. I'd love to know which musk chemical leaves a metallic residue. Also, isn't funny that items that we'd consider as stinky, like sweaty deer testicles and glands, and roots like patchouli, were combined to make interesting scents? I like to imagine the first person who said, wow, this root smells like wet, unwashed wool socks. What can I use it for? Obv I'm making light, but these are the shower thoughts I have. And how nice to see Jon! And it looks like Summer there, too.
Yes, I always think that, I want to learn how to individually identify musks. I think galaxolide is very distinctive, but that's not used now. I think with patchouli, it's the branches that are used or maybe the leaves, I'm not sure. I think it was used because it was originally used to wrap silks to protect them from moths when they were shipped from the Far East. People noticed the smell on the silks and liked it and wanted to know what it was. That's my romanticised version of how patchouli got popular anyway. 😂
I love the note of musk. Although I must say I never loved the original formulation of Alien. My introduction to the note occurred in the late 60’s early 70’s when the note was a little more refined in my opinion. Great information Claire. Keep them coming.

Yes, I've struggled with Narciso for her EDP for sure, but more because of the patchouli and peach I think... Some of my favourite musks are the cleaner ones, I really love la nuit Tresor musc diamant for example, that is more of a white musk. This is very informative video! I am really happy our chemist can produce the synthetic of it because it is really unfair for a deer to be killed because of its popular gland! Using an original musk is like you use a horse in this modern era on the road which is not relevant anymore and i support our chemist to keep researching and produces more exact smell like the original one.

I inherited several bottles of Chanel perfumes from my mother, which she would have acquired in the early 1970s. I’m certain they contain animal musk, as the scent , while beautiful, is heavy and “oily” - very much heavier and denser than the modern renditions I own. I would not wear these vintage perfumes, and therefore prefer the modern version. Also aligns with my approach of supporting the conservation of these beautiful forest animals and sustainability of nature. Thanks so much for an interesting video, Claire!
Maybe! Yes the vintage ones can be very heavy, the scent intensifies and becomes a little overwhelming with age sometimes. I'm happy we have all these modern musks rather than deer musk, I particularly love ambrette. 🥰

I think nowadays musk is almost always synthetic thankfully. Deer musk would be crazily expensive whereas synthetic musk is pennies. Companies normally vote with their budgets, so thankfully ethics come free with that even when brands don't appear to care in other respects. Body Shop is much better these days, ethically speaking, now that they are owned by Natura rather than L'Oréal, I trust them much more! Thanks for watching ❤️

I love musk. I have smelled all kinds: synthetic and natural. They all smell different to me so I understand why some folks have a preference. It’s kinda magical in how one can spray it on someone’s skin and that person might not smell it at all, while a person in the vicinity of the wearer may smell baby powder… a second person in the room may smell cat pee… a third person may be utterly intoxicated and not know why. And yes it’s sad that people would kill deer for their musk, however, there are people today who hunt the deer for meat to feed families, and the musk pods are made available that way. The process must be controlled though even for food.
Yes! Musk is so diversely perceived! It's absolutely fascinating and a truly intoxicating note. If the deer are being killed for food anyway, maximum use should be made, if possible, of all parts, although I do not know whether musk deer are used for food now. Thanks for watching ❤️
Just bought Kiehl’s original musks. I was intrigued by how people in 1920s perceived smell of musk like. Musc Ravageur smells synthetically sweet but not overly sweet. It is pleasant to smell on your skin. It is like skin scent but unfortunately not long lasting. By the way, i like the way you tell your story in the beginning by putting some historical context in it. Musk is one of Prophet Muhammad’s favourite scent apart from Rose, Oud and Camphor. I am curious about Musc Tonkin by Parfum d’Empire. It is said the smell mimics the real musk gathered from the pod in 19th century from Vietnamese deer. Musk from Tonkin (Vietnam) was the most sought after during the era. I had tried small quantity of natural deer musk from Musc Khabib by Bortnikoff. From what i can remember the smells is pleasant, but have some animalic quality in it. There is a hint of barnyard smell in it but overall it is nice. There is another one house that i know of from Russia that used real Siberian deer musk. it is call Areej Le Dore by Russian Adam. It is legal according to the Russian law since the pod is sourced from a deer killed by certain tribes in Siberia for their own livelihood/survival in a very harsh environment. It is very expensive and difficult to get. I just imagined if we could just put some testosterone precursor inside the formula. I dont know who Jon Snow is but i like the feeling of walking into the off beaten path into the woods. I can smell of damp earth, wet mossy wood with a hint of musk and amber after the rain. Do you often walk into off beaten track like Jon Snow did?

You are very into musk! 😊 It's a few years on from this video and I do really enjoy Musc Ravageur, but yes, I agree, it is much sweeter and actually less grrr with the musk than I had imagined it to be. I have heard a lot about Tonkin musk! I am also very intrigued to smell some 😊 I can understand how Siberian deer musk is allowed, if they are taking animals for survival, it seems respectful that they should be able to use every part. I do do a bit of walking, not generally on camera though, I find it hard enough to film 😂 but Jon Snow is one of my best friends here and has his channel here @ScentedSnowdrops he loves Amouage (he's made 3/4 videos reviewing about 60 Amouage fragrances) and indie fragrances. Kiehls Original Musk, and Skin Musk Oil by parfums de Coeur, Nemat Musk and Musk-Amber, Vanilla Musk, Cabot Labs Musk, are probably my favorites and the most wearable musks. If Coty Wild Musk still smelled like it used to, it'd be right up there with the rest. I sure miss it...Jovan Musk is still around, and popular. I never tried the Alyssa Ashley musks because they looked so white musk-cold to me, I always thought they would smell like hairspray. But they're incredibly popular, so maybe I'm missing out?
I feel like the cheaper musks of old were actually much better than the cheap musks now... I didn't try the Alyssa Ashley musks either but yes I am wary too! I would love to find a good musk oil, I'm sure there's one out there for me. Thanks for watching 🥰
@@dr.claire.perfume the Nemat musk oils are quite good, as well as Kiehls, and the skin Musk oil, it depends on which kind you like...I try a lot of different attars and musk oils from various makers, red musk oils are my favorites so far, but there's so many! Hindi musk, Mecca Musk, China musk, Jamaica musk, civet musk, patchouli musk, there's a musk for every taste.

I tried to verify that Talmud thing and I struggled to make a decision either way, it depends which scholar you agree with on the translation, anyway I kept it in. For sure it was being used by the ancient Greeks in the 5th century AD at least. I guess it all hinges on how well stuff gets recorded, like with the Vikings. I want to see the source for that with ambroxan 😂 Musk can definitely get too much for me in some contexts and this whole thing has made me wonder if I have anosmia to certain types cos it seems like it is really common! I think the 50s were a time of looking forward and wanting new things, people were fed up and ready to bin their old stuff after years of rationing and shortages, new was exciting. I think that mindset expanded into use of synthetics in all types of fragrance and luxuries like perfume were becoming more accessible and mass market, so costs and supplies were important considerations perhaps? Aww! My guest made it 👌 I read about catnip after you said that. That was another 2 hours of rabbit hole, so thank you for that 😂

Yes, I think it's a positive thing that musk has become more ethical and I think modern chemistry is really expanding the range of musks available to perfumers too, even animalic touches are being copied better than before. i love musk in fragrances... my Mom always bought musk fragrances for me before.. I don't know why people wanted to smell like the deer's pungent smell... 🤣 maybe they thought that they could hook a lot females as well if they wear the scent, like how male deers attract does... so it is the Ethylene Brassylate kind of musk that I really enjoy in scents.. the cheapest kind LOL, the sweeter, vanillic kind... i love the "white" musk smell too... what about Black Musk? could that be just those synthetic musks that try to mimic the classic animalic musk?
I think I like the cheap one too 😂 I only just realised that black musk existed when I was making this video. I read about what was in the body shop one and it seemed like it was musk with darker notes like liquorice. I have no idea elsewhere, but I've seen it with leather, pepper and patchouli in the montale version. So I am guessing it is any musk centred fragrance with darker notes? Not sure cos I've not tried any black musk fragrances... Let me know if you find out! 🥰
There are so many different musk molecules and it is interesting learning about them. But, I feel like I have to smell all of them in their pure form to develop an opinion. But I dont know any way to do so..
I guess you have to get friendly with a perfumer 😂 if you are in the UK, 4160 Tuesdays in London run perfume classes where you can smell perfume components and get taught about how they are used.

Yes, I hope that musk harvesting has moved on, I don't think it would be allowed any longer otherwise. With black musk, I remember someone else asking me about it and I'm not really sure. My understanding was that it is predictably darker in colour 😂 and also that it has a dirtier feel, almost fecal. This may have been mentioned already and I may have missed it, but the reason why some of the modern synthetic musks smell "clean" or "white", or like opening a tumble dryer or ironing a shirt, is that musks are used quite extensively in laundry detergents and fabric conditioners, often together with synthetic "fresh" white-floral aromachemicals.
The human sense of smell is greatly influenced both by our cultural context and by olfactory experiences and memories built throughout our life, which is why most Europeans today associate certain molecules used in cleaning/washing products with cleanliness and freshness.
In the example you mentioned, habanolide does not actually smell metallic, but simply similar to the different musks clinging to the damp laundry that are being heated and evaporated by the hot-iron. (A heated hot-iron actually does not smell of metal, as solid steel itself does not smell of anything.) Only our deep olfactory memories tell us that this is the smell of hot metal.
People who have never seen a hot-iron in use before will smell habanolide as neither "hot" nor "metallic"; in fact they may not even be able to consciously smell habanolide at all if their olfactory system has never been primed to distinguish the smell from other background smells.
In a similar way, vanilla does not smell "sweet" to people who have never eaten a sweetened vanilla dessert or cake in their life; and ethyl maltol smells specifically like cotton candy only to people who have experienced real cotton candy before.
Yes absolutely, associations are strong with smells and you can say similar things about people who've never smelt other things. Associations are sometimes very cultural, for example, chrysanthemums and death or lilies and death. This is part of why I find gendering of fragrances really unhelpful. Thanks for watching 🥰
Musks are tricky since they can smell so varied, like you said. I have a soft spot for those 80s/90s style white musks. They are pretty and clean without being full on detergent-like, and not super floral. I know they don't smell sophisticated, but the cozy nostalgia is appealing. Thanks for this primer on musks!
Yes, I love the clean ones too, it is a very fine line between clean and detergent-like! I guess because that is exactly what musks like ethylene brassylate and galaxolide have been used for, as well as for perfumes. I really have a very strong nostalgia for Body Shop white musk. I've not tried it recently but I would love it to smell like it smelt in the 90s. Thank you for watching! 🥰

In the seventies until 1984 I have often smelt the real oily animalic musk, if you want to know EXACTLY how the real animalic deer's musk smells like, you should try Ambraliquida by L'Erbolario. Ambraliquida is a cruelty-free scent, has non-animalic ingredients, BUT it is exactly how deer musk in perfumery smells like: warm, sweet, powdery, slightly pungent, little bit dirty.

Body Shop’s White Musk was holy grail status for me in the late 90s and early 2000s. I’ve heard it’s not the same anymore. Ellis Myth reminds me ofit though.
Yes, I went to try it as I had feelings of nostalgia for it but it wasn't how I remembered it. It has lost its identity. Everything has sadly been reformulated at the body shop, I think that's been part of the problem, along with exorbitant prices now. I will look into the Ellis Brooklyn. Thanks for watching 🥰
I love vintage perfumes, so I would be really interested in smelling some old style animalistic perfumes. I also love both original alien and body shop white musk. Funny enough I've heard a very young youtuber saying that bodyshop white musk reminded her of sweaty armpits. It astonished me because to me it smells so clean.

I've had the opportunity to smell actual musk deer musk (musk tonquin) tincture in the past and I do love the odor. There is a modern product called tonquitone produced by IFF that is a really good facsimile of it. Ambrettolide is also quite similar but less animalic.
I've not smelt it, but I would love to. I can imagine the more modern musks are more of a range of clean to dirty, icy to warm, fresh to nutty, powdery to creamy than ever before. Perfumers need that range to be able to make what they want to. I absolutely love ambrette, I wish it were used more! Thanks for watching ❤️

I think I have smelled animalic musk, yes. When I was a young child in the 60s-70s my relative asked if I wanted to smell her perfume but said be careful this has musk in it. Do you want to smell it anyway? I was just a toddler/kid but said yes. I remember it was a nice experience and I have had good associations with the idea of the smell of musk since. I have not worn many perfumes through the years and am just now in my 50s really getting into it. I do love Narciso Rodriguez For Her. I'm glad we can have a nice smell without killing animals for it now.
Yes animalic musk is quite different to the cleaner ones that are more common now. But there are certainly some examples of vegan musks that are closer to the animalic versions. I think Narciso Rodriguez for her is now considered a classic fragrance, one of those bookmarked examples of musk in fragrance.

So.... musks. You've answered some of my questions (thanks Claire!) and prompted others. Isn't that always the way, though. Wouldn't it be lovely if the musk chemicals were disclosed when fragrance shopping? I've identified a dry down scent I find repulsive, and it's a metallic, brassy note. So far, I've traced it to notes for florals and musk. I do find it most often in older perfumes from department store houses, and it does remind me of vintage clothing from the 40's-60's that I used to wear. I'd love to know which musk chemical leaves a metallic residue. Also, isn't funny that items that we'd consider as stinky, like sweaty deer testicles and glands, and roots like patchouli, were combined to make interesting scents? I like to imagine the first person who said, wow, this root smells like wet, unwashed wool socks. What can I use it for? Obv I'm making light, but these are the shower thoughts I have. And how nice to see Jon! And it looks like Summer there, too.
Yes, I always think that, I want to learn how to individually identify musks. I think galaxolide is very distinctive, but that's not used now.
I think with patchouli, it's the branches that are used or maybe the leaves, I'm not sure. I think it was used because it was originally used to wrap silks to protect them from moths when they were shipped from the Far East. People noticed the smell on the silks and liked it and wanted to know what it was. That's my romanticised version of how patchouli got popular anyway. 😂

I love the note of musk. Although I must say I never loved the original formulation of Alien. My introduction to the note occurred in the late 60’s early 70’s when the note was a little more refined in my opinion. Great information Claire. Keep them coming.

Yes, I've struggled with Narciso for her EDP for sure, but more because of the patchouli and peach I think... Some of my favourite musks are the cleaner ones, I really love la nuit Tresor musc diamant for example, that is more of a white musk. For sure your taste can change, I hope you find a musk that you love eventually. Thank you for watching ❤️

The oldest perfume I know is taboo which my mother had. She was born in 1918 so I will look it up.
I've not tried that one, my grandmother was born around the same time and wore Californian Poppy by Atkinson's. My other grandmother wore Blue Grass by Elizabeth Arden. Thanks for watching 🥰
This is very informative video! I am really happy our chemist can produce the synthetic of it because it is really unfair for a deer to be killed because of its popular gland! Using an original musk is like you use a horse in this modern era on the road which is not relevant anymore and i support our chemist to keep researching and produces more exact smell like the original one.

I was also super curious! It's just a clean mix from what I can discern. It is a very hazy term, I think clean primarily but that special mix of different musks (either polycyclic or polycyclic and linear) is key. Thank you for watching! ❤️

I inherited several bottles of Chanel perfumes from my mother, which she would have acquired in the early 1970s. I’m certain they contain animal musk, as the scent , while beautiful, is heavy and “oily” - very much heavier and denser than the modern renditions I own. I would not wear these vintage perfumes, and therefore prefer the modern version. Also aligns with my approach of supporting the conservation of these beautiful forest animals and sustainability of nature. Thanks so much for an interesting video, Claire!

I could cry 💔 and the only musk perfume I’ll buy is from The Body Shop as it is vegan and no animals were used/harmed in any way, ever.
I think nowadays musk is almost always synthetic thankfully. Deer musk would be crazily expensive whereas synthetic musk is pennies. Companies normally vote with their budgets, so thankfully ethics come free with that even when brands don't appear to care in other respects.
Body Shop is much better these days, ethically speaking, now that they are owned by Natura rather than L'Oréal, I trust them much more! Thanks for watching ❤️

I love musk. I have smelled all kinds: synthetic and natural. They all smell different to me so I understand why some folks have a preference. It’s kinda magical in how one can spray it on someone’s skin and that person might not smell it at all, while a person in the vicinity of the wearer may smell baby powder… a second person in the room may smell cat pee… a third person may be utterly intoxicated and not know why.
And yes it’s sad that people would kill deer for their musk, however, there are people today who hunt the deer for meat to feed families, and the musk pods are made available that way. The process must be controlled though even for food.
Yes! Musk is so diversely perceived! It's absolutely fascinating and a truly intoxicating note.
If the deer are being killed for food anyway, maximum use should be made, if possible, of all parts, although I do not know whether musk deer are used for food now. Thanks for watching ❤️

Just bought Kiehl’s original musks. I was intrigued by how people in 1920s perceived smell of musk like. Musc Ravageur smells synthetically sweet but not overly sweet. It is pleasant to smell on your skin. It is like skin scent but unfortunately not long lasting.
By the way, i like the way you tell your story in the beginning by putting some historical context in it. Musk is one of Prophet Muhammad’s favourite scent apart from Rose, Oud and Camphor.
I am curious about Musc Tonkin by Parfum d’Empire. It is said the smell mimics the real musk gathered from the pod in 19th century from Vietnamese deer. Musk from Tonkin (Vietnam) was the most sought after during the era. I had tried small quantity of natural deer musk from Musc Khabib by Bortnikoff. From what i can remember the smells is pleasant, but have some animalic quality in it. There is a hint of barnyard smell in it but overall it is nice. There is another one house that i know of from Russia that used real Siberian deer musk. it is call Areej Le Dore by Russian Adam. It is legal according to the Russian law since the pod is sourced from a deer killed by certain tribes in Siberia for their own livelihood/survival in a very harsh environment. It is very expensive and difficult to get. I just imagined if we could just put some testosterone precursor inside the formula.
I dont know who Jon Snow is but i like the feeling of walking into the off beaten path into the woods. I can smell of damp earth, wet mossy wood with a hint of musk and amber after the rain. Do you often walk into off beaten track like Jon Snow did?
Gosh! You are very into musk! 😊 It's a few years on from this video and I do really enjoy Musc Ravageur, but yes, I agree, it is much sweeter and actually less grrr with the musk than I had imagined it to be.
I have heard a lot about Tonkin musk! I am also very intrigued to smell some 😊 I can understand how Siberian deer musk is allowed, if they are taking animals for survival, it seems respectful that they should be able to use every part.
I do do a bit of walking, not generally on camera though, I find it hard enough to film 😂 but Jon Snow is one of my best friends here and has his channel here @ScentedSnowdrops he loves Amouage (he's made 3/4 videos reviewing about 60 Amouage fragrances) and indie fragrances. I know what you mean. There have been a few slightly dirty fragrances that I've just not been able to get on with.
Kiehls Original Musk, and Skin Musk Oil by parfums de Coeur, Nemat Musk and Musk-Amber, Vanilla Musk, Cabot Labs Musk, are probably my favorites and the most wearable musks. If Coty Wild Musk still smelled like it used to, it'd be right up there with the rest. I sure miss it...Jovan Musk is still around, and popular. I never tried the Alyssa Ashley musks because they looked so white musk-cold to me, I always thought they would smell like hairspray. But they're incredibly popular, so maybe I'm missing out?
I feel like the cheaper musks of old were actually much better than the cheap musks now... I didn't try the Alyssa Ashley musks either but yes I am wary too! I would love to find a good musk oil, I'm sure there's one out there for me. Thanks for watching 🥰
@@dr.claire.perfume the Nemat musk oils are quite good, as well as Kiehls, and the skin Musk oil, it depends on which kind you like...I try a lot of different attars and musk oils from various makers, red musk oils are my favorites so far, but there's so many! Hindi musk, Mecca Musk, China musk, Jamaica musk, civet musk, patchouli musk, there's a musk for every taste.
Wow! It's a big world of musk out there! I need to try some more! 🤣

What a great informative video claire ! 🙂, I learned from this i didnt know there are lots of different types of musk and how they smell like, im actually not a big fan of musk, slight muskiness is ok to me depends on what other accords it is mixed with.

Yea I always guessed women were more sensitive because many seem to struggle with musk. Our unconscious senses are quite incredible aren't they, the wonder of life.

I tried to verify that Talmud thing and I struggled to make a decision either way, it depends which scholar you agree with on the translation, anyway I kept it in. For sure it was being used by the ancient Greeks in the 5th century AD at least. I guess it all hinges on how well stuff gets recorded, like with the Vikings. I want to see the source for that with ambroxan 😂
Musk can definitely get too much for me in some contexts and this whole thing has made me wonder if I have anosmia to certain types cos it seems like it is really common!
I think the 50s were a time of looking forward and wanting new things, people were fed up and ready to bin their old stuff after years of rationing and shortages, new was exciting. I think that mindset expanded into use of synthetics in all types of fragrance and luxuries like perfume were becoming more accessible and mass market, so costs and supplies were important considerations perhaps?

Yes that's a sad part of history isn't it, the ancients knew more than we gave them credit for and somethings are lost for us modern folk to say we discovered. It's like uranium and all that surely neolithic Estonian or wherever it is came across it, and maybe Merlin with his glowing sticks and such like
Thanks you for this so very interesting Video. I have quite a collection of older perfumes. Estee Lauder, Givenchy, Chanel of course. I like them all, but I don't wear them because of these animalic notes. I collect them for referense reasons. Civit or older musks, I don't need them.
Yes, I think it's a positive thing that musk has become more ethical and I think modern chemistry is really expanding the range of musks available to perfumers too, even animalic touches are being copied better than before. I can definitely see why people would collect older fragrances, they are social history 👌 thank you for watching ❤️

i love musk in fragrances... my Mom always bought musk fragrances for me before..
I don't know why people wanted to smell like the deer's pungent smell... 🤣 maybe they thought that they could hook a lot females as well if they wear the scent, like how male deers attract does...
so it is the Ethylene Brassylate kind of musk that I really enjoy in scents.. the cheapest kind LOL, the sweeter, vanillic kind... i love the "white" musk smell too... what about Black Musk? could that be just those synthetic musks that try to mimic the classic animalic musk?
I think I like the cheap one too 😂 I only just realised that black musk existed when I was making this video. I read about what was in the body shop one and it seemed like it was musk with darker notes like liquorice. I have no idea elsewhere, but I've seen it with leather, pepper and patchouli in the montale version. So I am guessing it is any musk centred fragrance with darker notes? Not sure cos I've not tried any black musk fragrances... Let me know if you find out! 🥰

There are so many different musk molecules and it is interesting learning about them. But, I feel like I have to smell all of them in their pure form to develop an opinion. But I dont know any way to do so..
I guess you have to get friendly with a perfumer 😂 if you are in the UK, 4160 Tuesdays in London run perfume classes where you can smell perfume components and get taught about how they are used.
Great content. I like white musk in fragrances but after a while it can become too much.
Yes, there are definitely limits with that pure clean powdery smell. And really heavy white musks can be a little headachy.

The deer musk is expensive.. they are another Musk called black Musk.. i dont know how they make it !?
Thank you! If I am ever travelling to the Middle East, I will try to find some! Maybe it's even available here too now? Yes, I hope that musk harvesting has moved on, I don't think it would be allowed any longer otherwise. With black musk, I remember someone else asking me about it and I'm not really sure. My understanding was that it is predictably darker in colour 😂 and also that it has a dirtier feel, almost fecal. I too have no idea what the difference is with where it comes from or how it's make though! Thanks for watching ❤️
