Thanks for the peer-review on Tanks. I remembered this being challenging when I was a child. I also assumed it was just the "little kid difficulty" curve acting up, but when I went back to beat it a few years ago, it really was just as tough as I remembered. Something quite cool about Wii Tanks is that this game has inspired a whole community of people nostalgic for this game and looking for more to develop fangames (including myself). There are a bunch of them out there, including but not limited to wee tanks (which looks much like the original with upgraded graphics), tanks: the crusades (which features crazy amounts of customization in a level editor), toy tanks (which has a really cool physics engine), micro tanks (which has some crazy concepts like water levels), and tanks: rebirth (which is a faithful remake aiming to be 1:1 to the original). It's always nice to see a community bonding over a game they enjoyed as kids.
Couldn't agree more!! The last couple of years working on Wee Tanks and interacting with so many people sharing the same nostalgia (including you) was truly amazing.
I don't know if it's inspired, but a game on roblox called "Tiny Tanks" bears a strong resemblance. Top down with bouncing shots. It has tank customization because it's meant to have a bit more staying power, but in retrospect there's some mechanics that bare a resemblance to wii tanks. Shots bounce once off walls, can destroy each other, and there's a special ammo type that bounces twice, and another that moves faster. There's also a tank class that deploy a mine which like Tanks can be detonated by shooting. Quite a fun game, I need to revisit it.
My sister and I spent so many hours playing the Tanks game together. We usually ended up getting to around level 15-18 and then giving up and seeing who could kill each other first 😂 We had different names for things too, like the stationary tanks we called grandpas because they never moved and mines were eggs (the yellow tanks were obviously ducks because they laid eggs). Thanks for the trip down memory lane, Lemon!
Yeah, my sister and I had a similar experience, except we didn't name the tanks: instead, if one of us died, we'd immediately cry out _"MEDIC!!!"_ to alert the other player to the situation. Also, on the first level, we'd usually tried to quick-snipe one another to try and be the only one left to secure the first enemy kill.

all this about the fantastic design and you didnt even mention that green tanks practically never shoot directly at you, they will always try and bounce their rocket at you. and they are scary good at it. maybe its the panic of trying to figure out where the rocket is actually going that makes it so frightening. love to see some love given to one of my favorite games of all time
I spent *so many* hours in this game when I was younger (especially in the tanks minigame). That tune, the bullet "ticks", and the game over jingle are burned into my brain.
The black tanks were the bane of my existence to younger me, they were so intelligent and even sandwiched me multiple times. Never underestimate the black tanks trust me.
My grandfather, who is still around, was in his late 60s early 70s, and he mastered tanks. It was one of the 3-4 games he ever played and would fall asleep playing it, but when I would play I'd lose around lvl15. He made it all the way through lvl 50 or whatever the max was multiple times, because when i would lose, the leader board would come up and it was just filled with his mii character and the perfect scores he achieved. His wrists are too messed up to play anymore but I would co-op with him often, and had to use the nunchuck to move, he only ever used the single remote for movement and shooting. He was a legend.
My mother still has a Wii set up in the garage for occasional uses. Whenever she feels its time to go on another diet she reduces her calorie intake, fires up the Wii and spends the next few weeks playing Wii Sports. It works, every time. The Wii truly was a unique console.
Come on... come on... YES! 18:44 THE MUSIC! I was being edged with the tanks theme song playing with the drums and trumpet in my head playing throughout the video.

Super happy to hear you bring up Links crossbow adventure. Another genuinely great wii game. Something I could play with my dad for hours even though he had been an arcade guy his whole life.
I remember when I got my Wii. It was during the Wii drought. Wii had been looking for a Wii for weeks. Then, I had a revelation, Super Smash Bros Brawl was coming out. I had been anticipating it, reading up on it, checking the site, and making predictions. So when I saw a Wii+Brawl bundle, I knew that stores would get some Wiis in, on Brawl release day. That morning, we had a heavy snow, but it cleared by lunchtime. So we called around and…….Toys R Us had Wiis!!! I jumped out of my seat, got ready, and we drove 40 minutes to Toys R Us and they had an abundance of Wiis, because of Brawl and bad weather. Good times
My brother-in-law and I just grinded this game for A YEAR. We would play once or twice a week, 1-3 hours every session, taking turns with each death. After literally a fully year of that, we finally beat the game last week! We talked so often about how underrated and great this game is. We talked about how it needs a remaster. Or a full on sequel. And just by itself! If they were to make it and have the 100 level challenge, new levels, map creator, and even online PVP, it would genuinely be one of the greatest games of all time.
Oh brother of citrus goodness, I and my older brother grew up on Wii sports and play. The Wii was our only console for years. Seeing you play this brings so much nostalgia.
This gives me uni flashbacks. Just came here to say my father is an expert at this game. When we were kids and first got the wii after saving as a family in a jar, we got a few games. Wii play was one of those games. My father never played any other game other than "tanks" and very rarely bc we always played our games. He beat the entire thing to our amazement and got the top score. We could never surpass level 7 or 8. After my parents divorce he didn't have a wii or a way to play "tanks." Fast forward probably a decade and eventually we got him a wii and wii play for father's day. To this day he will unwind by beating tanks. He loves the game for whatever reason. I'm sure it's calming for him to play and beat the game. His highscore leader board is completely filled with perfect scores. He has the game memorized at this point. I never could figure it out and I always got more enjoyment watching him play so masterfully. When he does lose a tank sometimes he'll swear or shout and it makes me smile every time. I dont think we've ever gotten him a better gift. Love you dad :-) ☆edit☆ just watched your video entirely and I was confused bc you said there was only 20 levels, knowing full well my old man got to 100 too many times to count. I'm glad eventually you state the max level. His leader board is maxed with top score, I think its 468 or something like that. He's a beast and he doesn't even know it. It's seriously impressive that he can do it consistently and knows what's coming on each level. He's turning 72 this november.
i'm glad i'm not the only one who found it jarring how you'd play through all the previous mini games and they be 1v1 versus then suddenly your playing a fully functional single player or coop game.
@@savyir7066 I just got a PS2 emulator running this game to see if it was just nostalgia and uhhh.... No, genuinely the control and handling of this game still holds up super well, and the performances are just the right level of cheesy. Tons of fun, tho the visuals do leave a bit to be desired.
I forgot entirely about Wii tanks until watching a video a couple of years back called something like "the surprisingly complexity of the music in wii tanks", it's astounding how much work went into this game
Oh man I remember playing the hell out of tanks as a kid. I never actually got to level 20 but I heard legends of the invisible tanks. Honestly this minigame deserved to be its own game
This game eveloped my entire freshman year whenever i played my moms Wii. I could never beat it fully, but the horror of the greens lives on! Havent seen the whole video, but love to see this on here getting the notoriety it deserves.
Wii tanks is that game that somebody makes a video on every few years, flabbergasted by the amount and quality of content in it, and I love it for that
1/6? last i checked the red ring rate was closer to 60% i, personally, and my roommtate went through 12 consecutive xboxes that red ringed (to be clear, this was from normal use, not abuse or anything else) we literally got a call from microsoft directly that said "we will no longer honor your warrantee, we're tired of replacing your consoles" our response was: than make one that doesn't brick every six months!. you gotta love it when they make an official statement saying "it didn't count"
My dad got super into this game when we finally got a Wii. He was good at it, I don't remember if he ever beat it all the way through 100 levels but he did play enough to regularly fight black tanks.
I was very irritated and delighted to see one of my favourite childhood games, which I had completely forgotten, suddenly appear in my recommendations.
I KNEW i couldn't be the only man on the planet haunted by this game. I hit my friends with "Yall remember Wii Play: Tanks" and they gaslight me into thinking I'm making up memories and a fake gamer
Xbox 360: "Man it sure it cold since the Sun went behind the clouds" PS3: "That aint the Clouds" Xbox 360: *looks up to the Wii towering over them like the opening scene of fucking AoT*
E3 one year had a trailer where a Sony representative walks out, pulls out a PS3 controller that has a dinky switchblade in it, while the Nintendo guy has a Wiimote that's also a lightsaber, and the the Microsoft rep just had an Xbox with nails through it mounted on a pole.
I have great memories with this game. I was born two years before the release of the Wii, so i got to play it a lot because of my dad. We played the tank mini games A LOT, i might have more hours in this mini game than my favorites games ever. It has a place in my heart because i think that was a base/core thing to the relationship between me and my dad. TANK you for the video Lemon :)
Something to note about the green (lime) tanks, they are programmed to predict your movement based on direction and speed, they literally calculate the best angle to throw a rocket at you taking into account ricochets
People complained about the PS3'a price at launch while simultaneously forgetting that Blu-ray players at the time were like 1500-2000 dollars which was 3-4 times more than a console with a built in Blu-ray player. I knew many people back in the day who only bought a PS3 because it was at the time effectively the cheapest Blu-ray player you could find on the market.
10:23 high methane would be like methane dragsters, and methane track cars which are mostly discontinued, which is a real thing aside from the implied fart joke
I've destroyed so much back in the days that I ended up switching hands to hold the wiilote and the nunchuk. This is one of the most brain wrecking experience I ever have with strange behavior appearing like aiming up instead of going up. 10/10 recommended for a challenge run. Thanks Lemon for the sweet memories!
I was forced to watch this video because it said “Wii tanks” By far one of the best simplistic games ever made and a core memory that I hold onto. I’ll never forget it. (Might get lost in my brain for a bit, but never forgotten) Seriously I feel the need to watch any tanks video. Knowing that everyone else that ever played this game went through as much suffering as I did gives me some comfort. Seeing the green tank appear for the sponsor very clear.
I still come back to this game maybe once or twice a year. I still remember the first time I saw Mission 21 as a roughly 9-year-old kid. I lost my mind. "This wasn't here the first time!" "How much further does it go?" Then I hit Mission 50 with the black tanks for the first time... I instantly lost my multiple-hour run. Right there a spark ignited in me and I was DETERMINED to find the end of this game. After what was probably months, I somehow clawed my way through Mission 100, with THREE lives to spare! To this day, I have no idea how. The best I've gotten in the last 4 odd years of booting it up occasionally was Mission 95, and it was a miracle run with only 1-2 lives for a good 25-30 missions straight. (I'm 25 years old now btw!) Tanks will always be one of the most nostalgic games for me, and I always take the opportunity to share my love for it with friends :)
I PLAYED THIS GAME ALL THE TIME!! Never would've guessed that it held such a special place in so many peoples' hearts. Every time someone tried to play co-op with my sibling, they'd immediately shoot player 2 dead the instant each level started. Mercilessly. It was hysterical
Lemon please get out of my walls. Just yesterday I was talking with my bother about the Tanks game for a solid 45min and how nostalgic we were for the game.
My brother got super deep into Wii tanks around 2016, watching him clear level after level in single player mode was so sick. Imo maybe one of the coolest "mini game" Easter eggs in video game history.
That Wii play tanks game is actually crazy fun. I have very fond memories I even told my dad about yesterday. Getting a Wii with my 3 older brothers on Christmas with just Wii sports and Wii play. We were instantly drawn to tanks and months later we tried to beat it. Watching my brothers throw themselves at it was delightful. And they got to the final level. And seeing… well nothing was pretty funny. Such a cool mini game and very very fun
That’s so funny, this game stuck in my brain too. I recreated it back in 2016 for my final project in my high school AP computer science class. Now I think about it every couple months. But I never realized how complex it was! Thanks for sharing

☆edit☆ just watched your video entirely and I was confused bc you said there was only 20 levels, knowing full well my old man got to 100 too many times to count. I'm glad eventually you state the max level. His leader board is maxed with top score, I think its 468 or something like that. He's a beast and he doesn't even know it. It's seriously impressive that he can do it consistently and knows what's coming on each level. He's turning 72 this november.
My brothers and I used to obsess over this game! Glad to see someone else was as serious about it as we were
i'm glad i'm not the only one who found it jarring how you'd play through all the previous mini games and they be 1v1 versus then suddenly your playing a fully functional single player or coop game.
My Girlfriend still owns a Wii as well, and sometimes we still try to beat Tanks.
Or beat each other up in Wii Sports boxing...
I was OBSESSED with this minigame! I was constantly asking people to play it with me but we never got very far 😭
0:03 Yea JakX-Combat Racing. I still won't shut up about it
You're so fucking right
I think this is the first time I've ever actually seen someone else mention this game, honestly a Gem.
Still the best combat racing game imo
@@savyir7066 I just got a PS2 emulator running this game to see if it was just nostalgia and uhhh.... No, genuinely the control and handling of this game still holds up super well, and the performances are just the right level of cheesy. Tons of fun, tho the visuals do leave a bit to be desired.
Yes
Finally a real game
Wii tanks is that game that somebody makes a video on every few years, flabbergasted by the amount and quality of content in it, and I love it for that
1/6? last i checked the red ring rate was closer to 60%
i, personally, and my roommtate went through 12 consecutive xboxes that red ringed (to be clear, this was from normal use, not abuse or anything else) we literally got a call from microsoft directly that said "we will no longer honor your warrantee, we're tired of replacing your consoles" our response was: than make one that doesn't brick every six months!.
you gotta love it when they make an official statement saying "it didn't count"
My dad got super into this game when we finally got a Wii. He was good at it, I don't remember if he ever beat it all the way through 100 levels but he did play enough to regularly fight black tanks.
I'm listening to this while playing dsaf and definitely didn't need 19:34 right now.
Why hello there...
I played the heck out of Wii play. It was a great thing to play at the weekend where I had a Wii at my grandparents.
I remember loving this game and a few months ago saw a detailed break down on how this game worked. Its is great to see.
this was my game as a kid and I have vivid memories of never beating it even after coming back to it when I was a little older
I used to play this with my dad. We never finished it to. We used to accidentally blow each other with a mine or ricochet missle
I was very irritated and delighted to see one of my favourite childhood games, which I had completely forgotten, suddenly appear in my recommendations.
Video starts at 12:16
The video starts at 0:00 you gonna ignore that sweet sweet lore?
@@thatderp3247 I saw Wii Tanks
I KNEW i couldn't be the only man on the planet haunted by this game. I hit my friends with "Yall remember Wii Play: Tanks" and they gaslight me into thinking I'm making up memories and a fake gamer
Xbox 360: "Man it sure it cold since the Sun went behind the clouds"
PS3: "That aint the Clouds"
Xbox 360: *looks up to the Wii towering over them like the opening scene of fucking AoT*
Behold! 20 minutes and 8 seconds of Matt getting slaughtered by Lemon 😂
10:33 is when he actually starts talking about Wii Play Tanks
Got my lemon plushie the other day! Very cool sitting on my shelf
Something to note about the green (lime) tanks, they are programmed to predict your movement based on direction and speed, they literally calculate the best angle to throw a rocket at you taking into account ricochets
Love the videos lemon!!! Keep em coming
i was gonna watch this but then i realised i could watch a 10 yr old video on the gameplay to give me the dose of nostalgia i need.
1:55 the games? what games?
Ps 3 has games🎉
You’re ignorant
Ps3 has no games 💀
@@Signal-Noise I does trust me it does
I wouldn’t mind more videos like this, Lemon. Such a refreshing video
We need to talk about XCOM 2! Rise up my brothers and let your voice be heard 🙏
Amen
Definitely need more xcom in my life
My brothers and I played Wii Play a ton when we were kids and Tanks was always our favorite. Of course we never beat it, but it was fun
The Wii my beloved
"You ever have a game that lives rent free in your head?"
Me internally on repeat: * Pata pata pata pon~*
People complained about the PS3'a price at launch while simultaneously forgetting that Blu-ray players at the time were like 1500-2000 dollars which was 3-4 times more than a console with a built in Blu-ray player.
I knew many people back in the day who only bought a PS3 because it was at the time effectively the cheapest Blu-ray player you could find on the market.
Just like how the PS2 was a fairly cheap DVD player at the time, I think?
@@fakesmile172 That's partly the reason why the PS2 was so successful
10:23 high methane would be like methane dragsters, and methane track cars which are mostly discontinued, which is a real thing aside from the implied fart joke
10:00 tanks
I've destroyed so much back in the days that I ended up switching hands to hold the wiilote and the nunchuk.
This is one of the most brain wrecking experience I ever have with strange behavior appearing like aiming up instead of going up.
10/10 recommended for a challenge run.
Thanks Lemon for the sweet memories!
I was forced to watch this video because it said “Wii tanks”
By far one of the best simplistic games ever made and a core memory that I hold onto. I’ll never forget it. (Might get lost in my brain for a bit, but never forgotten)
Seriously I feel the need to watch any tanks video.
(I'm 25 years old now btw!)
Tanks will always be one of the most nostalgic games for me, and I always take the opportunity to share my love for it with friends :)
Man a full 20 minute video non-stop dunking on a friend really makes me want to get my friends over more often
Lemon's eye slit contorting into comical nostrils when he breathes a deep sigh of relief was so cursed
We now have a soft representation of what Lemon looks like
Scruffy's video on the incredibly over-engineered music of tanks is a must-watch
Thank you so much for covering this, Wii play tanks was like my favorite game for so long. I had easily over 500 hours just in tanks.
My brother got super deep into Wii tanks around 2016, watching him clear level after level in single player mode was so sick. Imo maybe one of the coolest "mini game" Easter eggs in video game history.
Now that's what I call clearing out the backlogs!
Never played it, but every few years a video pops up diving into how much someone loved it, another great addition!
