The Monaco carabiniers head cover is a variation of what is called a Pith helmet, it was used frequently by British, French, and other European colonizers in Africa and Asia from the Victorian era to WW1. For the Malaysian uniform, its not for only the Royal Malay Regiment but its a ceremonial dress for ALL branches of the Malaysian Army here which differs from the Royal Navy and Royal Airforce. The kain sampin is only for male "other ranks". Even though the weather is hot and humid here, the "number 1" uniform is designed to keep in moisture and even on parade, it keeps us cool. Anyway, as a grunt its really normal to be baked under a hot afternoon sun for a few hours daily and after a while, you don't seem to sweat :Þ. By the way, don't pronounce Malay as "may lay" instead say "muh-ley" as in "Malay-sia"

@@wolger correct because in army there is a lot or regiment that has been granted 'royal' by our YDPA such as Rejimen Askar Melayu Diraja (RAMD), Rejimen Renjer Diraja and so on. When combined all regiment it become Tentera Darat.
I have to mention for Malaysian uniform, just like the sampin (skirt), the songkok (hat) is also part of our national heritage. So it is unlikely and rather disrespectful to ask us to change it. Even our member of parliament wears it as part of ceremonial dress...as also other Malaysian men during holidays festivities or even daily prayers. Always been proud of the Malaysian uniform...man enough to wear skirts and proud of it. Though I prefer sarong, less thing to wear beneath, more airy and cooler. People may joked about behind our backs...but never in our face...not a wise move against a culture where men wear skirts as their daily garment. Not sure what people are complaining about the heat...that's why we wear white. It deflects heat and certain fabrics are cool in our climate like pure cotton or linen. Also we wear undergarments that absorb sweat, most people here who work outside in the open does that. As the inner garments slowly dry, it cools the body. It's basic convection cooling. The less surface of our body exposed to the sun, the less hot it is...as long as one wears the correct type of fabrics and layers of it. It also prevents that embarrassing sweat patch on your clothes like on your back or armpits and having it sticking to your skin. The sweat is absorbed and distributed evenly in the absorbent fabric of our inner garments. In dusty hot weather dirt will stick to the sweat patch on your clothes and muddy it. See those marching soldier under the hot sun and their faces glistening with sweat...do you see any sweat patch on them? My point precisely. I guess most younger Malaysian doesn't practice this smart method of dressing any more and modern day fabric like polyester and hybrid cotton is not good for our climate...and many don't find it too stylish to wear "practical" clothes. Some of the older folks even used to wear towel lining under their collar to keep cool and the outer hem clean. I still do as I used to work as construction site engineer and now retired as a farmer. Sometimes I go as far as wearing shirt, trousers and neck-tie...then wear an overall over it when I need to go into dirty heavy machinery labs complete with safety gears of gloves, boots, goggles, earmuff, etc. Sure I sweat a lot but it doesn't show on the outside and I don't suffer from the heat. I even wear double layer of socks so that it keeps my feet dry quicker in our hot damp environment and prevent blisters. Another military practice from the old days of the British colonial...something many today have forgotten. In our hot humid environment, it is best to avoid your skin dry to avoid heat stroke. Moisture next to your skin helps keep you cool. Remember...when judging garments...real men not only wear something that look good, and seemingly practical...but also practical in so many levels that's hidden from sight. You have still much to learn...and so am I...one thing I learn from other culture is that I'm fascinated with the Russian foot wrap that is highly practical compared to our socks in many ways including foot health and hygiene.

@@combataesthetics4177 The goose step march never part of our military culture. It just remain as an idea that they did experiment on, but later abandon. The old marching steps much suitable for us.

Plus, the march not do well with our uniform, especially for the RAMD who wear samping in their ceremonial uniform. It would flailing around during marching because the legs have to raise straight almost 90 degrees. The RAMD troops usually apply pin on the samping to keep it straight and proper. Even the Bundeswehr, German federal army, have abandoned the goose step march.

@@dabsy123 since there are no anyone so I'll answer, the police force was made by the Brit in the 1800's while the Army at some point somewhere in early 1960's was trained and organized by the US Army to fight communist's insurgent. The fact originally both salute a same way. The Malaysian modern Army was never meant to be exists so the Army adopting some of their trainer culture for as a bless..

Two examples would be Sarawak , ie Sarawak Rangers…by Rajah Brooke..and another Regiment, which also took the format from the British…or should I say, trained by the Indian Military Academy..which in turn, set up by the Brits..and that would be..the Sultan of Johor..who has the oldest Regiment dating back for memory, prior to WW2, and the oldest unit in Malaysia, of what was then, 200 men. A couple of notes on the Malaysian uniform. 1. The "skirt" was _not_ traditionally that short. Traditionally it was down to half-shin; but militarily-speaking, that would be impractical, so it was shortened to above the knee. A "kilt" would be a better description. 2. It's only worn by the rank-and-file (including warrant officers for you Americans). Officers do not wear them. 3. Officers of all the services wear a white tunic with appropriate-coloured pants. White for the navy, green for the army and so forth. This is because the uniform is based on the British No. 3 Dress (Or No. 1 White Tropical Dress) which replaced the darker tunic with a more practical white top. 4. It's pronounced KAA-yeen DAA-GAANG. But props for the attempt. 5. Medal sizes are stolen from the Brits, who happen to be physically larger, so _they_ can pull it off. 6. In Brunei (which has exactly the same uniform, bar the colours/patterns) the navy has swapped out the songkok for a more western naval cap for all ranks; so at least _they_ get some eye protection!
Warrant officer are now also wearing an officer's dress. For their rank, nowadays they r not using the 'jam pekak' for no. 1 dress. The rank is being wear similar to rank and file but little bit lower.
To add on it, for our airforce and navy did not use sampin for the rank and file. For airforce, the rank and file still using white uniform with blue trousers whereas for officers are both blue.

To clarify something about the German Army uniform: Not everyone wears a green beret. The color of your beret indicates your military role. Green for infantry, scarlet for paratroopers and special forces, blue for medics, black for anyone working with tanks and red for artillery and other supporting units.
As he is talking primarily about guard service roles, he gets it right with the green beret: German parliamentary guards (Wachbataillon) will definitely all wear a green beret. Edit: Dude, were you a paratrooper in /26?! I think I might recognize your name.
We have the same system in Canada Most army units daily wear is green berets with the exception of Highland and Irish infantry (Tam O Shanter and Caubeen respectively) and some special ceremonial headgear. Paras wear maroon, MPs red (all services), Armour Corp black, UN vets can wear their light blues on special occasions. Special Forces wear a tan one.
The Irish Guards wear blue because blue (known as St Patrick’s Blue because its the colour associated with St Patrick) is the colour of Ireland in heraldry and is still the official colour of the Irish state today. You can look up the coat of arms of Ireland to see for yourself, and the same is true on the Irish portion of the UK arms. The Irish chivalric order the order of St Patrick (the equivalent of the English Garter and Scots Thistle) used blue as its colour.

For the Queen's Guard, I don't look at their bearskin hat. I usually look at the button spacing arrangement on their blouse to identify which Guard unit they are from. Single button are the Grenadier Guards. Double buttons for the Coldstream Guards. Also known as the 2nd Grenadier Guards, but changed to Coldstream because their motto is "Second to None". Triple buttons for Scots Guards. Quadruple buttons for Irish Guards. Quintuple buttons for Welsh Guards. Also, WOOHOO! for the Malay Regiment. Malaysia represent!
Since modern Malaysian army was originally formed during British colonialism era, many aspect of British military traditions were incorporated such as foot drills, organization, uniforms conventions, including the practice of wearing full sized medals on ceremonial uniform. Smaller/miniature medals are only worn on mess kits.
the helmets are pith helmets, mostly used in warm climats by, for example, the british in their colonies. The one they're wearing is called the Colonial style, you also got the Wolseley helmet, which I prefer, but it's newer than this one, being used mostly in the 20th century.

As a german soldier, i agree with you especially in terms of tailoring. I personally like wearing the uniform, it makes me feel 1st gucci. And believe it or not, there is actually tradition in this uniform. The colours, grey top and black bottoms, traditional german colours for uniforms. If you look closely at this uniform, you can see a lot of similiarities in this uniform with the older uniforms from and before WW2, for example placement of pockets and how the pockets are sewn. I personally think, the only thing to improved really is the tailoring. When you go to the depot in your first week of basic, you dont get measured properly (eventough you get this custom made for every soldier!). A bunch of different sized jacket and pants are hung up on the wall and you just try them on and say ,,Yeah this one fits best" and thats it, you wont get it more precise than that... Which is why I took my sewing machine and tailored it myself 😁

About the lack of leg armor on the Swiss Guard uniform: If you look at Medieval artwork, they'd sometimes leave the legs unprotected for increased comfort and mobility. Also when the Guards were first formed, firearms had started to come onto the battlefield, forcing an increase in thickness of the cuirass, pauldrons, etc; so it made sense to forego leg protection. Also, if you think the Swiss Guards' uniforms are loud, you should check out their German (region, not a country at the time) contemporaries: the landsknechts.
Malaysian Guards wear what is essentially a British uniform. The medals are standard British size. The Monaco guards wear covers identical to British police helmets which were also worn by the Army before WW1 and used by Regimental bands now. They are called 'Home Service' helmets and are made of cork covered in felt (probably plastic nowadays) so are really a type of pith helmet. The US also wore this style of helmet at the end of the 19th century.
The Malaysian Guard uniform has nothing to do with British, it's esentially a Malay national dress. The sampin or skirt is worn over the trousers to cover the body shape between waist and knees when performing prayers.

You could try “foot guards” as any British or Commonwealth units may perform Public Duties, that is Buck House St James Palace and the Tower. BTW the button spacing also denotes the regiment.
Honestly, I love the German Uniform for its simplicity. The grey is a classic harkening back to its Prussian roots and it really exemplifies professionalism and discipline to me. However, I think it would be better with the soldiers wearing a modernisation of the Pickelhaube with the Bundesadler on the front.
The Malaysian regiments are steeped in British Army traditions there uniform are very similar to the British Gurka Regiments. But no skirt. , The Monaco regiment hat is a Pith Helmet or sun helmet

I think the Swiss guard should integrate modern armor into their current design, and a shoulder cape that allows them to conceal a shoulder rested rifle. There's potential to be extremely functional and cool.
The GSP (Guardia Svizzera Papale) has various uniforms, the one commented is not the gala uniform but the guard uniform, for other services they have a simple blue uniform with the basque beret. Weaponry is kept in the specific room and the guards stand at the various entrances only with a alabard, thus called as they have a cutting part added to the pike. There is no need for heavier stuff. The colourfull uniform comes in two versions, winter and summer, as in Rome these seasons can be rather extreme the difference is remarkable in weight.

@@brittakriep2938 a couple of friends of mine who served a Swiss Guard were convinced that a halberd was a very convincing discouraging mean to keep a crowd under control. Probably had the guards on January 6th had such equipment some form of control could have worked efficiently.
The German berets have different colors depending on branch/functional area. The Green for instance goes for their Infantry (both mechanized and light). Black berets are worn by their armored forces, Maroon by their Airborne forces, etc...
I understand, but it doesn't match the uniforms they wear, especially the formal (ceremonial) uniforms like that. it would be better if they wore hats instead of berets.

I think that a place on the list was deserved by the presidential guard of Greece, the euzones wear characteristic costumes that represent each region of Greece (the costume of the islands, the Cretan one and the greek classical one) and as a body , the guard has existed since the creation of the Greek kingdom.

Monaco: the Pith Helmet, which was originally made of Cork! The idea was for (at first a British) soldier to soak it in water before going out into the sun. There are vents and as the water evaporates it helps prevents Heat Exhaustion. (A thanks you to: The History Guy for showing this a few months ago...)
Thanks for calling out the Star Trek rip-off. But as a fantasy fan, AND as someone who has handled both weapons (Renaissance Faires 1999-2001, playing soldiers) I have to correct you strongly on the difference between a halberd and a pike. The pike is just a long, long spear going out to 12-14 feet long, while a halberd is an AXE on a pole, coming out to maybe 7+ feet only. The pike is something you only use on formation, for the most part, while, halberd can be used that way OR as a personal weapon. Since the Swiss used the halberd famously in combat formation, but bodyguards need to carry one-on-one weapons, that's why the Guards carry the halberd . . . NOT a pike. Trust me on this, I've marched in time with pikes, wearing armor and Shakespearean clothing in the summer heat, so I know one when I see one.
Just to clarify, the Queen’s Guard are those troops on ceremonial duty at the Royal Palaces around London and Windsor, those troops can come from any armed forces of the numerous countries of which the British monarch is Head of State, the Royal Navy have provided the Queen’s Guard recently, as have the various GHURKAS units, Australian Defence Force amongst others (including the Royal Malay Regiment who you showed clips of at Windsor), and the RCMP (the only civilian force to have provided the Queen’s Guard). My point is that you are specifically referring to the ceremonial uniforms of the Foot Guards of the Household Division, not the Queen’s Guard.
This is only if need be, of course it is to provide the commonwealth importance, but the 5 regiments afore said, are stationed normally. (I am in the Grenadier Guards in the household division) And we are also VERY good soldiers. Of course not as good as the Ghurkas but who could be? Anyway, we are not ceremonial, thats 50% of our job.

Paras SAS etc..Armoured..there is nothing much that we havnt even started, or had our fingers in..Sandhurst..the ASM is always a Guardsmen..the DIs the same, though chippies are more involved, good on em..and the Adj is always a Guardsmen. The world is changing and the Guards are slowly being etched out..hence standards IMO are falling..but..we still have our historical links on how we SET the standards for all..even the bloody Chinese!

The Queen of the United Kingdom is also the Head of State of a number of other Commonwealth countries, including Canada, Australia, New Zealand and others, and those states also have the right to provide the Queen’s Guard, along with the armed forces of the United Kingdom. The RCMP is an interesting organisation, although it is a civilian police force it was awarded the distinction of ranking as a Dragoon (Cavalry Regiment).
The German Bundeswehr dress uniform actually uses different colored collar tabs and piping to denote what branch the soldier belongs to, and the beret color often changes as well. The assignment of colors is based in the history of the armies of the various large German kingdoms (mostly Prussia) before the unification in 1872. Green tabs & beret is Infantry, for example. Panzer troops have the old Cavalry pink tabs & piping, but wear a black beret. Paratroopers wear Infantry green tabs, but a maroon beret. Can't argue with you about the need for some tailoring though, and their boots are just screaming for some Kiwi!

Sampin were created as part of a light armour, been woven with gold or silver thread. Some Malay cloth need inserter some herbal or medicinal thread to prevent the injuries to become severe. But this only apply 500 years ago during the height of Malay Sultanate.

As a household guard, in the Grenadier reg, you can also tell the regiments apart by the buttons, I dont know if you knew that but coldstreamers are in 2's, ours are straight down - no breaks- scottish in threes irish in 4's welsh in 5's
The Carabiniers sport the Pith or Sun Helmet, actually copied and adapted from the Filipino Salakot when the Europeans were going around colonizing SE Asia. It became popular in the 19th century with most European armies adopting it as their main head gear due to it's practicle designs for hot climates. The helmet allowed good air flow and offered good eye and neck protection from the sun. Thai Royal Guards also wear these with heavy plumage to mimic the general tall hats of the British Foot Guards without it having to be Bearskins.
My father joined the Welsh Guards in 1938 and took part in the BEF landing in France and evacuated from Dunkirk 1940. He went back on D Day. He was on palace guard duties between those years and repairing bomb damage. His favorite guard duty was at the Bank of England where they patrolled inside the building, hob nailed boots were exchanged for gym shoes, so as not to damage the marble floors. At the end of duty each guardsman was issued a newly minted half-crown piece, this would buy several pints of beer, so soft shoes and beer money you can see why they liked that guard duty.
A good example of German uniforms being heavily modeled after the old uniforms were the GDR (east German) dress uniforms, they even went ahead and redesigned the Stahlhelm which was used by guard divisions dress uniforms
Forgot to mention this: you can aslo distinguish the Guards by the buttons on their uniforms, and the badges on the epaulettes and the collar. Eg: the Grenadier Guards has even spacing between the buttons, a fusilier on the collar and the royal bagde on the epaulettes.
Yep. Scots guards have a thistle badge on their collar, Welsh guards have a leek, Irish guards have a shamrock, grenadiers have a grenade and Coldstreamers have a star and garter.
Germany was unified from several dukedoms and city-states. Hence it would be difficult to see their traditional (military) elements for parade uniform since it will be too favourable on one or some particular areas/cities in Germany. Besides, their historically military uniforms during dukedoms & city-states era were borrowed from France or UK, which was not easily distinguishable than the colour and shape of the helmet/pickelhaube. So, in defense, the grey field/feldgrau is historically unified colour for German military. But we can't pick any inspirations from uniform in 15-19th century.
2 mistakes you made when talking about the Swiss guard. 1) A halberd and a pike are 2 completely different weapons. A halberd has an axe head and spikes on a pole. A pike is essentially a very long spare. 2) Medieval plate armor was not that heavy, about 40 to so pounds (IIRC), roughly equivalent to a modern plate harness with plates. The big difference is that with a plate harness all of that weight is distributed all across the body instead of just on the torso. It's also worth noting that the Vatican guard has started to replace their old steel helmets with replicas made of plastic because they're lighter and more comfortable to wear, I don't know if they're replaced the cuirasses though. Another mistake, you do know that you showed some pictures of the uniforms from the BSG reboot even though you called them Star Trek? Regarding the bullpup, the design isn't about allowing for a longer barrel but to allow for a longer barrel in a shorter overall package.
With regards to identifying the Regiments of British Foot Guards you can tell what regiment they are with their buttons on the tunics. Grenadiers have buttons in a single row, Coldstream Guards have buttons in twos, Scots Guards are buttons in three, Irish have buttons in buttons in four and the Welsh five.👍🏻

Halberds aren't also known as pikes, pikes and are halberds are different weapons. A pike is a very long thrusting spear, a halberd is a type of spiked axe polearm.
I actually know someone who served in the Swiss Guard. Also, while I agree that the German uniform is bland and needs a better fit the Germans maintained the style introduced in the German military after 1918. So it’s kind of traditional. And Germans do love tradition!
The funny thing about uniforms or ceremonial uniforms is that they tend for the most parts to be pretty simple in terms of color pallets like the blues and whites, red and whites, green, gold and white and from personal experience or from what I’ve seen most NO1 dress uniforms tend to have at least two colors to four at most,

You also might want to do a wholesale Napoleonic era uniform review, going around to all the different countries between the French Revolution in 1789 and the Battle of Waterloo in 1815. I say this because you seem to like uniforms from that era the best.
Germany used to have really good uniforms, but I can understand why the Germans want to distance themselves from the Prussian styled uniforms of the German Empire, since the Nazis used them as well. Also, the Nazis kind of stole all the Prussian symbols and used them in their uniforms in some way, the Totenkopf (the famous "SS" skull and bones) for example, predates the Nazis by over a century. It was used by Prussian cavalry Regiments. German uniforms could, and should be much better, if they took some Prussian inspiration, if you want to know what a modern Prussian inspired uniform would look like today, go and look at the Chilean military, as they were inspired heavily by the German Empire. I don't however believe that Germany will be taking any Prussian inspiration from their uniforms anytime soon.

@@TheMadYetti The Germans, after WW2, wanted to distance themselves as much as possible from Nazi Germany, which they viewed as indistinguishable from Prussia. Plus, they wanted to reflect a more republican style to their armed forces, because the Uniforms of the Third Reich were still heavily inspired by the Imperial uniforms of the Second Reich.

You missed a couple of interesting details about the Queen's Guard. First, they are not only differentiated by the hackle on their bearskin hat (yes, it's real bearskin. No, it's not that heavy) . They are also differentiated by their collar insignia and by the placement of the buttons. Grenadiers have a straight row of buttons. Coldstream buttons are in pairs, Scots in threes, Irish in fours and Welsh in fives. Secondly, Grenadiers are meant to be very tall. They originally were meant to carry "grenades" which they would lob at the enemy, in addition to fighting with guns. The tallest men were selected for these units as they had longer arms and thus would usually throw grenades farther. The bearskin hat is intended to make them appear even taller to intimidate the enemy on the battlefield.
Excellent breakdown, although you are repeating a misconception that is being said about the US Space Force (USSF), plagiarizing sci-fi series. The @SpaceForceDoD both in their uniforms and in their emblem are paying homage to their heritage. First the uniform as a retired Airman I agree tailoring, tailoring, tailoring, when I saw the photographs of the roll out those pants were the only thing I saw because my mind went to full SNCO mode. After all deserved invectives were said I took a more objective look at the overall uniform. As stated it is a heritage based uniform starting with the Mandarin collar same type worn by Army Air Corps BG Billy Mitchell. Although the jacket is more of a tunic style with the buttons/enclosure on the side it's length is from a WWII style jacket most famously worn by Gen Eisenhower (thus called the Ike Jacket) which were still authorized to be worn by select units until the early 1980's. I wore one until 1983. So combining the elements from Army Air Corps to Army Air Force to Air Force the USSF is showing it's lineage. Remember Gene Roddenberry was an Army Air Force navigator. The USSF emblem the delta is just a more stylized version of the delta emblems representing aeronautic and astronautic flight from the 1950s and 60s. From the very thin horizontal red delta of NASA to the solid triangle of the USAF Delta Rocket programs. As the decades moved on the base of emblem of the rocket program started to acquire a curve. It is true the curve of the rocket program started after the television series but the series started a decade after delta symbols were already being used to denote flight. As far as stars in the background what else would be used to represent space? Yes popular culture is more familiar with the sci-fi series emblem and uniform styling but those were adaptations of things that were already established by other institutions. In a way it's a complementary back and forth. An institution came up with something then a fictionalized version appeared, then an updated version appears with a new institution. It seams like each paying homage to the other.

In the case of the Welsh Guards, the “green and white” is representing two things I think. Green and white are the two background colours of the flag (with a red dragon on it). However, more specifically, especially when looking at way the colours are arranged with a larger white top, and smaller green lower part: it’s a representation of the Welsh Leek, one of the National emblems of wales.
As for Germany. I can’t help thinking their uniform are a deliberate move to stay away from the sartorially elegant historical uniforms. The Japanese self-defence forces are the same too, their uniforms don’t resemble the 30s/40s stuff (the marine self defence forces get enough grief from their Asian neighbours for continuing to use the “sunburst” flag as their navel flag)
The malay sampin is also a weapon. In the silat martial art. Sampin or "kain pelikat/selendang" is use when theres no weapon in hand. It used as a sheild/ to immobalized and kill the attacker

The Monaco carabiniers head cover is a variation of what is called a Pith helmet, it was used frequently by British, French, and other European colonizers in Africa and Asia from the Victorian era to WW1. For example, if you've ever seen the movie Zulu, the British soldiers at the battle of rorke's drift wear in the movie, and wore in real life, Pith helmets.

For the Malaysian uniform, its not for only the Royal Malay Regiment but its a ceremonial dress for ALL branches of the Malaysian Army here which differs from the Royal Navy and Royal Airforce. The kain sampin is only for male "other ranks". Even though the weather is hot and humid here, the "number 1" uniform is designed to keep in moisture and even on parade, it keeps us cool. Anyway, as a grunt its really normal to be baked under a hot afternoon sun for a few hours daily and after a while, you don't seem to sweat :Þ.
By the way, don't pronounce Malay as "may lay" instead say "muh-ley" as in "Malay-sia"

I have to mention for Malaysian uniform, just like the sampin (skirt), the songkok (hat) is also part of our national heritage. So it is unlikely and rather disrespectful to ask us to change it. Even our member of parliament wears it as part of ceremonial dress...as also other Malaysian men during holidays festivities or even daily prayers.
Always been proud of the Malaysian uniform...man enough to wear skirts and proud of it. Though I prefer sarong, less thing to wear beneath, more airy and cooler. People may joked about behind our backs...but never in our face...not a wise move against a culture where men wear skirts as their daily garment.
Not sure what people are complaining about the heat...that's why we wear white. It deflects heat and certain fabrics are cool in our climate like pure cotton or linen. Also we wear undergarments that absorb sweat, most people here who work outside in the open does that. As the inner garments slowly dry, it cools the body. It's basic convection cooling. The less surface of our body exposed to the sun, the less hot it is...as long as one wears the correct type of fabrics and layers of it.
It also prevents that embarrassing sweat patch on your clothes like on your back or armpits and having it sticking to your skin. The sweat is absorbed and distributed evenly in the absorbent fabric of our inner garments. In dusty hot weather dirt will stick to the sweat patch on your clothes and muddy it. See those marching soldier under the hot sun and their faces glistening with sweat...do you see any sweat patch on them? My point precisely.
I guess most younger Malaysian doesn't practice this smart method of dressing any more and modern day fabric like polyester and hybrid cotton is not good for our climate...and many don't find it too stylish to wear "practical" clothes. Some of the older folks even used to wear towel lining under their collar to keep cool and the outer hem clean.
I still do as I used to work as construction site engineer and now retired as a farmer. Sometimes I go as far as wearing shirt, trousers and neck-tie...then wear an overall over it when I need to go into dirty heavy machinery labs complete with safety gears of gloves, boots, goggles, earmuff, etc. Sure I sweat a lot but it doesn't show on the outside and I don't suffer from the heat.
I even wear double layer of socks so that it keeps my feet dry quicker in our hot damp environment and prevent blisters. Another military practice from the old days of the British colonial...something many today have forgotten. In our hot humid environment, it is best to avoid your skin dry to avoid heat stroke. Moisture next to your skin helps keep you cool.
Remember...when judging garments...real men not only wear something that look good, and seemingly practical...but also practical in so many levels that's hidden from sight. You have still much to learn...and so am I...one thing I learn from other culture is that I'm fascinated with the Russian foot wrap that is highly practical compared to our socks in many ways including foot health and hygiene.

Plus, the march not do well with our uniform, especially for the RAMD who wear samping in their ceremonial uniform. It would flailing around during marching because the legs have to raise straight almost 90 degrees. The RAMD troops usually apply pin on the samping to keep it straight and proper.
Even the Bundeswehr, German federal army, have abandoned the goose step march.

I'm Malaysian, Thank you for honoring our uniform, it is our number 1 dress. The Police and The Air Force wearing with different color of Sampin (skirt) I think only our Navy doesn't adopt traditional dress as their number 1 dress.
The Polis and even Army also wear different hackles

@@dabsy123 since there are no anyone so I'll answer, the police force was made by the Brit in the 1800's while the Army at some point somewhere in early 1960's was trained and organized by the US Army to fight communist's insurgent. The fact originally both salute a same way. The Malaysian modern Army was never meant to be exists so the Army adopting some of their trainer culture for as a bless..

Two examples would be Sarawak , ie Sarawak Rangers…by Rajah Brooke..and another Regiment, which also took the format from the British…or should I say, trained by the Indian Military Academy..which in turn, set up by the Brits..and that would be..the Sultan of Johor..who has the oldest Regiment dating back for memory, prior to WW2, and the oldest unit in Malaysia, of what was then, 200 men. Your still need to get to the way of why both salute differently ..as a hint..in the early days..the Malaysian Army did salute the British way!…😀

We talk in the general meaning of the Regiment and the Force ... anyway wrong or right wasn't the point. We are here now and my great and grand dad was served in police force (great grand), Brit Army transfer to Malay Regiment then back to Brit Army til him finished his contract.

It really is a distinctive style. Whoever designed the uniform did a great job.
A couple of notes on the Malaysian uniform.
1. The "skirt" was _not_ traditionally that short. Traditionally it was down to half-shin; but militarily-speaking, that would be impractical, so it was shortened to above the knee. A "kilt" would be a better description.
2. It's only worn by the rank-and-file (including warrant officers for you Americans). Officers do not wear them.
3. Officers of all the services wear a white tunic with appropriate-coloured pants. White for the navy, green for the army and so forth. This is because the uniform is based on the British No. 3 Dress (Or No. 1 White Tropical Dress) which replaced the darker tunic with a more practical white top.
4. It's pronounced KAA-yeen DAA-GAANG. But props for the attempt.
5. Medal sizes are stolen from the Brits, who happen to be physically larger, so _they_ can pull it off.
6. In Brunei (which has exactly the same uniform, bar the colours/patterns) the navy has swapped out the songkok for a more western naval cap for all ranks; so at least _they_ get some eye protection!
Yeah and Warrant Officers have a big red sash and their "broken watch" is on the right elbow to show their rank.
Warrant officer are now also wearing an officer's dress. For their rank, nowadays they r not using the 'jam pekak' for no. 1 dress. The rank is being wear similar to rank and file but little bit lower.
To add on it, for our airforce and navy did not use sampin for the rank and file. For airforce, the rank and file still using white uniform with blue trousers whereas for officers are both blue.
both bruneian and malaysian navy and air force ceremonial uniforms are using peak caps, only the army maintained the songkok i guess in a way to honor how old the army is compared to other branches

To clarify something about the German Army uniform: Not everyone wears a green beret. The color of your beret indicates your military role. Green for infantry, scarlet for paratroopers and special forces, blue for medics, black for anyone working with tanks and red for artillery and other supporting units.
Same as in Poland then, even colours are similar in some cases.
As he is talking primarily about guard service roles, he gets it right with the green beret: German parliamentary guards (Wachbataillon) will definitely all wear a green beret.

We have the same system in Canada
Most army units daily wear is green berets with the exception of Highland and Irish infantry (Tam O Shanter and Caubeen respectively) and some special ceremonial headgear.
Paras wear maroon, MPs red (all services), Armour Corp black, UN vets can wear their light blues on special occasions.
Special Forces wear a tan one.
Do they have caps as well? Berets look a bit casual for a dress uniform.
The hat for the Malaysian Gard is also a traditional head dress

The Irish Guards wear blue because blue (known as St Patrick’s Blue because its the colour associated with St Patrick) is the colour of Ireland in heraldry and is still the official colour of the Irish state today. You can look up the coat of arms of Ireland to see for yourself, and the same is true on the Irish portion of the UK arms. The Irish chivalric order the order of St Patrick (the equivalent of the English Garter and Scots Thistle) used blue as its colour.
The blue is to represent The Order Of St.Patrick wich is a dormant order of chivalry the last Knight of St.Patrick was Prince Henry Duke of Gloucester passed away in 1974
It would be interesting to see you ranking uniforms from the begining of WW1, maybe also compare them to their ''newer'' versions 3 years later. during WW1 there happened such a big change in Military uniforms, it would be very interesting to look at it from a style perspective.

For the Queen's Guard, I don't look at their bearskin hat. I usually look at the button spacing arrangement on their blouse to identify which Guard unit they are from.
Single button are the Grenadier Guards.
Double buttons for the Coldstream Guards. Also known as the 2nd Grenadier Guards, but changed to Coldstream because their motto is "Second to None".
Triple buttons for Scots Guards.
Quadruple buttons for Irish Guards.
Quintuple buttons for Welsh Guards.
Also, WOOHOO! for the Malay Regiment. Malaysia represent!
Since modern Malaysian army was originally formed during British colonialism era, many aspect of British military traditions were incorporated such as foot drills, organization, uniforms conventions, including the practice of wearing full sized medals on ceremonial uniform. Smaller/miniature medals are only worn on mess kits.

the helmets are pith helmets, mostly used in warm climats by, for example, the british in their colonies. The one they're wearing is called the Colonial style, you also got the Wolseley helmet, which I prefer, but it's newer than this one, being used mostly in the 20th century.

As a german soldier, i agree with you especially in terms of tailoring.
I personally like wearing the uniform, it makes me feel 1st gucci.
And believe it or not, there is actually tradition in this uniform.
The colours, grey top and black bottoms, traditional german colours for uniforms.
If you look closely at this uniform, you can see a lot of similiarities in this uniform with the older uniforms from and before WW2, for example placement of pockets and how the pockets are sewn.
I personally think, the only thing to improved really is the tailoring.
When you go to the depot in your first week of basic, you dont get measured properly (eventough you get this custom made for every soldier!). A bunch of different sized jacket and pants are hung up on the wall and you just try them on and say ,,Yeah this one fits best" and thats it, you wont get it more precise than that...
Which is why I took my sewing machine and tailored it myself 😁

About the lack of leg armor on the Swiss Guard uniform: If you look at Medieval artwork, they'd sometimes leave the legs unprotected for increased comfort and mobility. Malaysian Guards wear what is essentially a British uniform. The medals are standard British size. The Monaco guards wear covers identical to British police helmets which were also worn by the Army before WW1 and used by Regimental bands now. They are called 'Home Service' helmets and are made of cork covered in felt (probably plastic nowadays) so are really a type of pith helmet. The US also wore this style of helmet at the end of the 19th century.
The Malaysian Guard uniform has nothing to do with British, it's esentially a Malay national dress.
The sampin or skirt is worn over the trousers to cover the body shape between waist and knees when performing prayers.

You could try “foot guards” as any British or Commonwealth units may perform Public Duties, that is Buck House St James Palace and the Tower. BTW the button spacing also denotes the regiment.

Honestly, I love the German Uniform for its simplicity. The grey is a classic harkening back to its Prussian roots and it really exemplifies professionalism and discipline to me. However, I think it would be better with the soldiers wearing a modernisation of the Pickelhaube with the Bundesadler on the front.

I think the Swiss guard should integrate modern armor into their current design, and a shoulder cape that allows them to conceal a shoulder rested rifle.
There's potential to be extremely functional and cool.
The GSP (Guardia Svizzera Papale) has various uniforms, the one commented is not the gala uniform but the guard uniform, for other services they have a simple blue uniform with the basque beret.
Weaponry is kept in the specific room and the guards stand at the various entrances only with a alabard, thus called as they have a cutting part added to the pike.
There is no need for heavier stuff.

The German berets have different colors depending on branch/functional area. The Green for instance goes for their Infantry (both mechanized and light). Black berets are worn by their armored forces, Maroon by their Airborne forces, etc...
I understand, but it doesn't match the uniforms they wear, especially the formal (ceremonial) uniforms like that. it would be better if they wore hats instead of berets.

Monaco: the Pith Helmet, which was originally made of Cork! The idea was for (at first a British) soldier to soak it in water before going out into the sun. There are vents and as the water evaporates it helps prevents Heat Exhaustion. (A thanks you to: The History Guy for showing this a few months ago...)

Thanks for calling out the Star Trek rip-off. But as a fantasy fan, AND as someone who has handled both weapons (Renaissance Faires 1999-2001, playing soldiers) I have to correct you strongly on the difference between a halberd and a pike. The pike is just a long, long spear going out to 12-14 feet long, while a halberd is an AXE on a pole, coming out to maybe 7+ feet only. The pike is something you only use on formation, for the most part, while, halberd can be used that way OR as a personal weapon. Since the Swiss used the halberd famously in combat formation, but bodyguards need to carry one-on-one weapons, that's why the Guards carry the halberd . . . NOT a pike.
Trust me on this, I've marched in time with pikes, wearing armor and Shakespearean clothing in the summer heat, so I know one when I see one.
Just to clarify, the Queen’s Guard are those troops on ceremonial duty at the Royal Palaces around London and Windsor, those troops can come from any armed forces of the numerous countries of which the British monarch is Head of State, the Royal Navy have provided the Queen’s Guard recently, as have the various GHURKAS units, Australian Defence Force amongst others (including the Royal Malay Regiment who you showed clips of at Windsor), and the RCMP (the only civilian force to have provided the Queen’s Guard). My point is that you are specifically referring to the ceremonial uniforms of the Foot Guards of the Household Division, not the Queen’s Guard.
This is only if need be, of course it is to provide the commonwealth importance, but the 5 regiments afore said, are stationed normally. (I am in the Grenadier Guards in the household division) And we are also VERY good soldiers. Of course not as good as the Ghurkas but who could be? Anyway, we are not ceremonial, thats 50% of our job.

Paras SAS etc..Armoured..there is nothing much that we havnt even started, or had our fingers in..Sandhurst..the ASM is always a Guardsmen..the DIs the same, though chippies are more involved, good on em..and the Adj is always a Guardsmen. The world is changing and the Guards are slowly being etched out..hence standards IMO are falling..but..we still have our historical links on how we SET the standards for all..even the bloody Chinese!

The Queen of the United Kingdom is also the Head of State of a number of other Commonwealth countries, including Canada, Australia, New Zealand and others, and those states also have the right to provide the Queen’s Guard, along with the armed forces of the United Kingdom.
The RCMP is an interesting organisation, although it is a civilian police force it was awarded the distinction of ranking as a Dragoon (Cavalry Regiment).

The German Bundeswehr dress uniform actually uses different colored collar tabs and piping to denote what branch the soldier belongs to, and the beret color often changes as well. The assignment of colors is based in the history of the armies of the various large German kingdoms (mostly Prussia) before the unification in 1872. Green tabs & beret is Infantry, for example. Panzer troops have the old Cavalry pink tabs & piping, but wear a black beret. Paratroopers wear Infantry green tabs, but a maroon beret. Can't argue with you about the need for some tailoring though, and their boots are just screaming for some Kiwi!

Sampin were created as part of a light armour, been woven with gold or silver thread. Some Malay cloth need inserter some herbal or medicinal thread to prevent the injuries to become severe. But this only apply 500 years ago during the height of Malay Sultanate.

The Carabiniers sport the Pith or Sun Helmet, actually copied and adapted from the Filipino Salakot when the Europeans were going around colonizing SE Asia. It became popular in the 19th century with most European armies adopting it as their main head gear due to it's practicle designs for hot climates. The helmet allowed good air flow and offered good eye and neck protection from the sun. Thai Royal Guards also wear these with heavy plumage to mimic the general tall hats of the British Foot Guards without it having to be Bearskins.
My father joined the Welsh Guards in 1938 and took part in the BEF landing in France and evacuated from Dunkirk 1940. He went back on D Day. He was on palace guard duties between those years and repairing bomb damage. His favorite guard duty was at the Bank of England where they patrolled inside the building, hob nailed boots were exchanged for gym shoes, so as not to damage the marble floors. At the end of duty each guardsman was issued a newly minted half-crown piece, this would buy several pints of beer, so soft shoes and beer money you can see why they liked that guard duty.

A good example of German uniforms being heavily modeled after the old uniforms were the GDR (east German) dress uniforms, they even went ahead and redesigned the Stahlhelm which was used by guard divisions dress uniforms

Forgot to mention this: you can aslo distinguish the Guards by the buttons on their uniforms, and the badges on the epaulettes and the collar. Eg: the Grenadier Guards has even spacing between the buttons, a fusilier on the collar and the royal bagde on the epaulettes.
Yep. Scots guards have a thistle badge on their collar, Welsh guards have a leek, Irish guards have a shamrock, grenadiers have a grenade and Coldstreamers have a star and garter.

Germany was unified from several dukedoms and city-states. Hence it would be difficult to see their traditional (military) elements for parade uniform since it will be too favourable on one or some particular areas/cities in Germany. Besides, their historically military uniforms during dukedoms & city-states era were borrowed from France or UK, which was not easily distinguishable than the colour and shape of the helmet/pickelhaube. So, in defense, the grey field/feldgrau is historically unified colour for German military. But we can't pick any inspirations from uniform in 15-19th century.
2 mistakes you made when talking about the Swiss guard.
1) A halberd and a pike are 2 completely different weapons. A halberd has an axe head and spikes on a pole. A pike is essentially a very long spare.
2) Medieval plate armor was not that heavy, about 40 to so pounds (IIRC), roughly equivalent to a modern plate harness with plates. The big difference is that with a plate harness all of that weight is distributed all across the body instead of just on the torso. It's also worth noting that the Vatican guard has started to replace their old steel helmets with replicas made of plastic because they're lighter and more comfortable to wear, I don't know if they're replaced the cuirasses though.
Another mistake, you do know that you showed some pictures of the uniforms from the BSG reboot even though you called them Star Trek?
Regarding the bullpup, the design isn't about allowing for a longer barrel but to allow for a longer barrel in a shorter overall package.
With regards to identifying the Regiments of British Foot Guards you can tell what regiment they are with their buttons on the tunics. Grenadiers have buttons in a single row, Coldstream Guards have buttons in twos, Scots Guards are buttons in three, Irish have buttons in buttons in four and the Welsh five.👍🏻

Also, while I agree that the German uniform is bland and needs a better fit the Germans maintained the style introduced in the German military after 1918. So it’s kind of traditional. And Germans do love tradition!
The funny thing about uniforms or ceremonial uniforms is that they tend for the most parts to be pretty simple in terms of color pallets like the blues and whites, red and whites, green, gold and white and from personal experience or from what I’ve seen most NO1 dress uniforms tend to have at least two colors to four at most,

You also might want to do a wholesale Napoleonic era uniform review, going around to all the different countries between the French Revolution in 1789 and the Battle of Waterloo in 1815. I say this because you seem to like uniforms from that era the best.
Germany used to have really good uniforms, but I can understand why the Germans want to distance themselves from the Prussian styled uniforms of the German Empire, since the Nazis used them as well. Also, the Nazis kind of stole all the Prussian symbols and used them in their uniforms in some way, the Totenkopf (the famous "SS" skull and bones) for example, predates the Nazis by over a century. It was used by Prussian cavalry Regiments.
German uniforms could, and should be much better, if they took some Prussian inspiration, if you want to know what a modern Prussian inspired uniform would look like today, go and look at the Chilean military, as they were inspired heavily by the German Empire. I don't however believe that Germany will be taking any Prussian inspiration from their uniforms anytime soon.

Plus, they wanted to reflect a more republican style to their armed forces, because the Uniforms of the Third Reich were still heavily inspired by the Imperial uniforms of the Second Reich.

you need to also take a look at the Lord Strathcona's Canadian Light Horse Troop. No spoilers, but another ceremonial guard of active military horse troopers with a cool uniform.
You missed a couple of interesting details about the Queen's Guard. First, they are not only differentiated by the hackle on their bearskin hat (yes, it's real bearskin. No, it's not that heavy) . They are also differentiated by their collar insignia and by the placement of the buttons. Grenadiers have a straight row of buttons. Coldstream buttons are in pairs, Scots in threes, Irish in fours and Welsh in fives. Secondly, Grenadiers are meant to be very tall. They originally were meant to carry "grenades" which they would lob at the enemy, in addition to fighting with guns. The tallest men were selected for these units as they had longer arms and thus would usually throw grenades farther. The bearskin hat is intended to make them appear even taller to intimidate the enemy on the battlefield.

Excellent breakdown, although you are repeating a misconception that is being said about the US Space Force (USSF), plagiarizing sci-fi series. The @SpaceForceDoD both in their uniforms and in their emblem are paying homage to their heritage. First the uniform as a retired Airman I agree tailoring, tailoring, tailoring, when I saw the photographs of the roll out those pants were the only thing I saw because my mind went to full SNCO mode. After all deserved invectives were said I took a more objective look at the overall uniform. As stated it is a heritage based uniform starting with the Mandarin collar same type worn by Army Air Corps BG Billy Mitchell. Although the jacket is more of a tunic style with the buttons/enclosure on the side it's length is from a WWII style jacket most famously worn by Gen Eisenhower (thus called the Ike Jacket) which were still authorized to be worn by select units until the early 1980's. I wore one until 1983. So combining the elements from Army Air Corps to Army Air Force to Air Force the USSF is showing it's lineage. Remember Gene Roddenberry was an Army Air Force navigator. The USSF emblem the delta is just a more stylized version of the delta emblems representing aeronautic and astronautic flight from the 1950s and 60s. From the very thin horizontal red delta of NASA to the solid triangle of the USAF Delta Rocket programs. As the decades moved on the base of emblem of the rocket program started to acquire a curve. It is true the curve of the rocket program started after the television series but the series started a decade after delta symbols were already being used to denote flight. As far as stars in the background what else would be used to represent space? Yes popular culture is more familiar with the sci-fi series emblem and uniform styling but those were adaptations of things that were already established by other institutions. In a way it's a complementary back and forth. An institution came up with something then a fictionalized version appeared, then an updated version appears with a new institution. It seams like each paying homage to the other.

The helmets on the Monocan Carabiniers are called Pith Helmets. Carabiners were cavalry who carried short muskets called carbines.
After wwl the Prince / Fürst of Monaco was a bit elderly and had no children. So the French feared, the Monaco dynastie dies out, and german Urach dynasty ( Side branch of Württemberg dynasty) would replace them. So a treaty was signed, that in case of dieing out of Grimaldy dynasty, Monaco becomes a part of France. But this did not happen, because Rainier, father of current prince was born.

In the case of the Welsh Guards, the “green and white” is representing two things I think. Green and white are the two background colours of the flag (with a red dragon on it). However, more specifically, especially when looking at way the colours are arranged with a larger white top, and smaller green lower part: it’s a representation of the Welsh Leek, one of the National emblems of wales.
As for Germany. I can’t help thinking their uniform are a deliberate move to stay away from the sartorially elegant historical uniforms.
