Art James hosted several other game shows after this. The theme music was unique in it was a simple guitar melody. Most others had elaborate orchestral themes.
My mom sent in a joke for the joke of the day and won a set of the World Book Encyclopedia and I still have them with the certificate inside. Saved my family a lot of money!!!
I agree, and the world lost two exceptional people when Bill Cullen and Art James died. Have you seen the Peter Pan peanut butter blooper, from "Say When," in 1964? If not, then please check it out. It is funny and Art James makes a good recovery.
Handsome , articulate Art James . I believe he was an Armed Forces Services announcer during WWII. Those game show hosts were so good during that era .
Art James was an underrated game show host. He was certainly not hard on the eyes, had a great sense of humor and looked years younger than his age. James was fluent in Russian (his parents were Eastern Europeans) and taught English to Russian immigrants.
I just came across the episode from the Friday of the first week (1/6/61). This show was from.that summer--the SUMMER MYSTERY SHOW was the replacement for Dinah Shore.(BONANZA would move into that Sunday slot in the fall) What's interesting is that the January episode has three minutes of paid commercial spots, and this one is sustaining--network promos and a PSA
1:26--Fernita Wallace went on to become a city council member in Lexington, Kentucky, 124 miles west of Ashland, Kentucky, where she was residing at the time of this program. In 2023, Mrs. Wallace was 85 and still a Lexington resident.
Thank you so much for this nostalgic Gem for us BabyBoomers! At "11:00" here, we see the spot for the Shari Lewis Show!!! If you have any of her shows we would really appreciate your sharing with us! Also there was a great male Artist who had another children's Show (either before or after Sherry Lewis) and he would teach us how to draw!!! I can't recall the name of the Show nor can I find it anywhere on UA-cam.... so if you know about this show, please let us know!💚 Thank you so much for this!!
@@SamHodkin23A couple of nighttime PRICE IS RIGHT episodes aired on Buzzr (and posted here) feature bonuses that were test runs for the concept--one where you picked a combination of items that didn't exceed the target figure, the other where items were brought out one after the other, the contestant taking each one until he felt he would go over the target.
I really wish there were more eps available of this show (in full). I wonder if they had to pay gift tax on their prizes, and the two ladies got to keep them.

It stretches what would otherwise be nothing more than a consolation prize. And like Art said, there's strategy, sometimes it's worth taking the blank check to keep your opponent away from it, especially when they're getting close to the target.
Art said that this show was done live. It may have gone to tape near the end in 1965, but then we wouldn't have the "peanut butter incident" (in color on UA-cam) in 1964.
The chinchilla capelet featured on the show would never be offered as a prize today because PETA and other animal rights activists, including Bob Barker, would be up in arms.
@@christopherdunne7848Actually, Wheel of Fortune stopped offering fur coats as prizes after season 7 (the first season to be filmed at CBS Television City).

What's the joke?
Say When is a super nice 1960's game show and the late Art James was great hosting it!!
Not a bad game show for this era and it's Art James. He is another very smooth host.
Another good show from Mark Goodson and Bill Todman. Looks like this show ran on NBC between January 1961 and March 1965.
This has to be the beginning of funny prize presentations for a game show.
I always had a crush on Art James. He was so handsome.😊
Those dimples! Did you know his family were Russian immigrants? He was born Arthur Simeonovich Efimchick.
@@wintercame Actually, there was no 'h' in his given first name.
Art James was a good game show host with a good sense of humor!
Like Bill Cullen, Art just seems like he was a really nice, down-to-earth kind of guy.

Not even just the hosts but game shows back then were a different era, so classy and light-hearted. 🙂

@@CityGirlCountry what a neat tidbit! Thanx for sharing!
Shari Lewis!!!! OMG I loved her!!
don't realize how old I am until I watch these old game show videos ------- I was about 8 when this one was made
This is nice, and it's the only full episode available that was not the pilot. However, Say When!! didn't go to color until 1964.
My sister, RIP was on that show in 1964. She did very well!!

Hugh Downs is still living ------------ he's 97 years old and will be 98 on Valentine's Day
Sadly, he passed away July 1, 2020.
Ron, Thank you for sharing this video and keeping it active all of these years. It was my favorite game show of all time. 🙂 (Chase)

Art James doing the arrow thru the head joke a good 10-15 years before Steve Martin!
And Peter Lind Hayes did it before him...
Paul Frees did the voice-over in the Smokey Bear ad.
Sort of Building your own Price Is Right showcase...without going over the budget.
And a Goodson-Todman creation too as well!

Other than the peanut butter clip, do any color episodes survive?

Yes, if they accepted their prizes, they got exactly what you saw, and they did have to pay taxes on them.

"Here, son. I love your kids so much that I want them to have 600 gallons of root beer. Have fun!"
Their dentist started running around the room saying "I'm rich! I'm rich!"
Funny to see these "blank check" prizes. Art hosted a (deservedly) short-lived game show entitled "Blank Check".
BLANK CHECK is something that the candidates are using to disrupt the voters.
The blank check is like the Grocery Game In the Price Is Right in buying X number of the same item to come close to the dollar amount goal.
Even Art thought it was dumb, calling it Blank Mind.

Just bought the board game at an estate sale.
I wonder if this was the predecessor to "Give n' Take"?
Unless when taped it was NOT supposed to be a Friday show but was supposed to air on Thursday or Monday.

The last game show to offer a fur was Wheel of Fortune until 1985, IIRC. Yes, not only PETA, but also Bob Barker had much input as well.
Exactly, Joel!

How about a game show called, "SAY WHAT?!"
I'd like to see one with no censors, titled SAY SWEAR WORDS.
GOOD REPLY!

I found this game boring, but I did like the Marble machine game way better then this Art James did better in that game than this one.
