I just found the home game in an antique store. I remember the short-lived "Super Pay Cards" that aired in syndication in the early 80s. There was little change in the format.
My dad and I went to a taping of Pay Cards in November 1968 and the guest celebrity was Perry Como's announcer Frank Gallop. It was the first TV show i remember going to live.and it was a great experience despite my dad being picked as the audience player and Gallop lost.
I remember sitting on the living room floor as a 4 year old watching this on WNEW Channel 5, with my mother and father. I had the home version of this game, sad that I no longer have my parents with me, nor the home game. This set had a very cozy feel to it, makes me want to curl up and fall asleep listening to it. Yes I can be odd...
Will Mack WNEW-TV (now known as Fox 5-WNYW) studios and offices are located at 205 East 67th Street, in the Yorkville section of Manhattan, and it's still there.
I remember I used to watch the old 10:00 news on WNEW TV channel 5 when they had John Roland,Bill McCreary,Bill Mazer,John Dockery and Linda Gialanella with the weather, previous folks news and sports alike. The commercial I like was the DIME savings bank commercial. If I remember correctly, the Gong Show with Chuck Barris would come on at 11pm.
I was on "Pay Cards" in1969, I would love to locate that show which starred Slappy White. I was the biggest winner on that show and had a great time. I was pregnant when the show taped and it was shown on TV after my baby was born in June 1969. How can I locate this show and view it?? Please help. Thank you, Mary Froner
Hi, If you ever find out (or found out) how to locate these episodes, can you please let me know? My mom was a contestant on this show (I was in audience w/ brother) but unfortunately, she passed away suddenly a few years later. I would love to locate that show. It was taped in Manhattan and I'm pretty sure, we skipped school that day :) Thanks!!!
I don't know why he was overlooked for many major game shows (at least to host) after "The Magnificent Marble Machine" (in the mid 70's). He did announce and do commercial ads. I.e. American Motors and (I think) Budweiser.
My mom tells me that watching this show on WNEW Channel 5 from NYC Was always part of my bedtime ritual when I was two or three years old. I’m obviously too young to remember, and clearly I didn’t understand the strategy of the game, I guess I just like looking at the different cards
Thanks so much for posting this episode of the original "Pay Cards!" I really enjoyed it. Even though it's 46 years old, "Pay Cards!" lets the home viewers play along with the contestants and celebrities, if they know how to play poker:)
I am looking for the Pay Card episode my mom was on when I was young. I was actually in the audience and I believe it was FOX channel 5 in Manhattan. She passed away suddenly in 1973 so I would love to locate it. But this was fun to watch just the same :)
I remember watching this game show as a kid. Gotta love that Amana Radarange microwave oven that cooks a potato in four minutes!! Today, air fryers are all the rage!!
Not a bad show, but having 3 contestants spread the gameplay a little thin, IMO...this was improved on Super Pay Cards by having only 2 contestants (which drastically reduced instances of time running short mid-round) and reducing the # of cards on the board for each round to 16, plus it had a better bonus round.
Oops---I'm the former cd637299 here---I didn't read that right. I had the "original" home game, not the "Super P.C." version. You might be right about that; never saw that one in stores, and we didn't have the updated TV version where I live.
Fred Collins belongs to a great cadre of staff announcers at NBC, which includes Mel Brandt, Vic Roby, Don Pardo,Bill Hanrahan,Roger Tuttle and Danny Dark.
My assumption is, since they bicycled tapes a lot back then, was more than one batch of videotape copies was sent at a time. May have been another color series or two along with the orange for that purpose.
It may have to do with where the show was shot. It originally eminated from WNEW-TV Studio 5 on E.57th Street in August 1969, then moved to WKRC-TV Cincinnati in the fall of 69. The show moved back to New York in January 1970 and Nicholson-Muir Productions leased studio space from WOR-TV Times Square studios at 1981 Broadway and in the spring of 1970 it finally moved to Reeves Sound Studios on W. 67th Street - those were the episodes labeled “Orange Series.” I believe the shows sot at WOR-TV were labeled ‘red’ or ‘blue’ series but I haven’t seen those episodes since they originally aired so I am relying on 50 years of memory. I don’t know why the show moved so often other than Nicholson-Muir was trying to keep costs down. I saw the show in the audience at WNEW, WOR, and at Reeves Sound Studios. Some historical tidbits: WNEW Studio 5 was originally built by Du Mont when it was a network and was home to the first two seasons of Sgt. Bilko where it was shot on 35mm film, years later the first season of the Electric Company was show there. WOR Times Square Studios originally was built by MGM and home of their television commercial production unit in the 1950’s, it later became a tape house when WOR moved to NJ. Reeves Sound Studios was originally built by WOR-TV in the early 50’s it was sold to NBC in the mid 50’s and served as network studios and later purchased by ABC and was their Lincoln Square Studios where Regis and Kathy Lee came from.
how do I see the episode of Pay Cards tv show with Art James in 1969, I was a contestant paired up with Comedian Slappy white. Have any suggestions??? Thank you
Very few game show tapes survive. Tape was expensive back then. Pay Cards wasn't a network show, but networks were known to reuse tapes for other shows later (called "wiping"). Best bet would be to contact Nicholson/Muir (names in opening credits), or whoever holds the rights.
If their other game show "Spin Off" (CBS 1975) has survived, one may predict this one has too though it is rumored, I'm not saying, that a few stations have aired reruns of Pay Cards until 1981 when Super Pay Cards debuted. Since its cancellation in 1982, both versions have not been seen in the states since, not even GSN has aired it either.
I had 2 copies of the home game, one at my home, the other at my maternal Grandmother's, neither had wild cards. I am told that the home game of Super never hit stores
The original Pay Cards indeed had a home game sold in US stores. There was a vinyl sheet with pockets that held the cards, which looked just like you see here. As I recall, the down-side was glossy, but the other side wasn't!
1. I wonder what card game these four people are supposed to be playing, or if it was just a mock game. 2. Mercy that young girl with those glasses, what "style". What the heck was she looking at anyway? 3. I've said it before, this set is dark but cozy to me. I especially love the card suits on the floor. 3a. The clubs are awesome to me, and that same clubs style was used on "Gambit". 4. The 2 contestants are sitting there, staring blankly into space, acting as if they are on death row. No applause from them for the host? Meanies! LOL

I like how this is a full card game show, without having to answer silly questions to get to that point.
Great video. Thank you for your time and effort for posting. It brings back good memories.

Will Mack Same here, Will! I was a bit older but I too remember watching this on good ol' Channel 5. So glad this episode was posted.

@@seanmontgomery801 Oh yes Sean I remember those newscasters too!
@@williamdunphy352 Was at that studio in 1967 when I appeared on Wonderama and had a closeup with Sonny Fox who passed away in January.
A nice, relaxing, and entertaining show. Art James' dulcetones add to this too.
Yes, but with a garbage and inappropriate theme song.
RIP Art James, a great and underrated host

I remember the show--I used to watch it over 40 years ago!
This Pay Cards show is much better, at least IMO, than anything that passes for poker on ESPN and Fox Sports Net nowadays!
My mom tells me that watching this show on WNEW Channel 5 from NYC Was always part of my bedtime ritual when I was two or three years old. I’m obviously too young to remember, and clearly I didn’t understand the strategy of the game, I guess I just like looking at the different cards
OMG, I totally forgot about this game show and then remembered we had the home game that I loved to play!

It was available in stores back in the day. The one i have now i got at ebay

I heard that almost all were taped over back in the day.
As seen on WNEW-TV in New York (a Metromedia station) weeknights at 8pm, between "TRUTH OR CONSEQUENCES" and "THE MERV GRIFFIN SHOW".
Yes! That's where I watched it too.
I remember watching this game show as a kid. Gotta love that Amana Radarange microwave oven that cooks a potato in four minutes!! Today, air fryers are all the rage!!

I checked numerous sources in the 1990s and none of them referred to MPC as the syndicator.
I remember watching this on KSBW in Salinas in 1969. I distinctly remember Colonel Sanders of KFC fame being a guest player on the show.
How i love this channel
As far as i know, the "Super Pay Cards" home game was only marketed and sold in Canada where the show was produced.
Samuel Lees Not so---I got one as a kid at a toy store in Miami, long gone now.
Oops---I'm the former cd637299 here---I didn't read that right. I had the "original" home game, not the "Super P.C." version. You might be right about that; never saw that one in stores, and we didn't have the updated TV version where I live.
I totally forgot about this great game. Does anybody know if the episodes exist?
The announcer introducing "Pay Cards" is veteran Fred Collins, who
also was the voice of ABC's "World News Tonight" during the 1980s.
Fred also worked for many years at NBC.
Fred Collins belongs to a great cadre of staff announcers at NBC, which includes Mel Brandt, Vic Roby, Don Pardo,Bill Hanrahan,Roger Tuttle and
Danny Dark.
I was hoping that this show and Dealers Choice from the 1970s would pop up on Buzzer or Game Show Network. I too watched them on CH 5 WNEW TV NY
If you lived in Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, this aired on WNEP Ch 16 at 11:30am (opposite Hollywood Squares on Ch 28)
I remember Strategy being the second hand and Wild Card being the final hand
Why does it say "Orange Series" in the end credits?
My assumption is, since they bicycled tapes a lot back then, was more than one batch of videotape copies was sent at a time. May have been another color series or two along with the orange for that purpose.
You'd think they'd put that on the slate though rather than at the end of the program surely?
Because yes, they had no bananas. But they did deal with pairs :D
+Will Mack Insert rimshot here

I remember that show when I was a kid.
This deserves a remake.
It was remade in the early 1980s, as "Super Pay Cards!".
James Vipond I meant presently.
Well... I got a SORT OF remake. What'cha think?
ua-cam.com/video/VcVhiOKPDes/v-deo.html
Sadly, I don't think they go that deep down...
The most I've ever seen are shows from the LATE 80s not the Early
It WAS remade in the 80s in Canada

I had the home version of this game.
I have the home game!
Did you receive the home game from someone who was a contestant on the show, or was the game also sold in stores?
I had 2 copies of the home game, one at my home, the other at my maternal Grandmother's, neither had wild cards. I am told that the home game of Super never hit stores

So you mean that Art James hosted Pay and Super Pay Cards? They seemed the same game.
I Have Seen The Show When I Was A Little Girl
At 9:15, I clearly hear someone whispering "nine" just before the contestant chooses number 9 to complete his hand. What's up with that?
I think that was Celeste helping Jack out for leaving her the Ace.
Why did only Jack get to play the bonus?
He had the most money after three hands.

Super Pay Cards slightly better.
They should have given Paul $10 for high card
Seems like a knockoff of "Concentration".
...Or not:)
Not a fan I like game shows where knowledge or skill is required.
a
That show was terrible
The theme song is garbage
