Hi, i just got the camera its impressive. But i want to know if it is possible to record in 3D but without the 180 degrees? Meaning the 3D would be fixed in one direction, you can't look right or left. Kind of like when watch a 3d movie in theaters.
Hey- no you can’t (at least that I know of).. you would need two cameras with longer lenses to do that (for example a 50mm lens creates a more narrow viewpoint) and stitch them together somehow
Three years later, in 2022, it seems that the EVO totally disappeared... 3D cameras all together are very hard to find nowaday... :(

Based on this review I took my leap into 360 camera and love the Evo. I wanted it mainly for 180VR, but I'm also liking that it's coverts into shooting 360 easily. Lots of updates since posting this review have fixed the issues with parallax and stitching.
Just to note... I was intending to use the Evo to film content for Oculus Quest VR headset and as it stands right now the Insta360VR app IS NOT available for Quest due to new Oculus application validation policies. (the app is available for previous Oculus Go). It's a bit of a gotcha right now for me and hopefully will be worked out soon. I love the ugly little Evo for its versatility.
Can you upload evo 3D180 footage to youtube? I'm wanting to make content to view via my PSVR. tho damn it's shitty resolution. Can't wait for psvr 2 to drop.

Hi Ben. Great Video! Very good review and comparison. You have helped me make up my mind which 3D camera to buy. I am interested in shooting 3D (and 180 if possible) - which mimics human eyes and to be able to play back these videos on something like an Oculus Go or Quest (still not sure which headset to get - looking at more reviews) so that I can essentially "relive" what I recorded. When I shoot videos on my holidays, I also record the audio in "binaural" or "3D" surround. This makes the videos more "realistic" so I'm hoping the Insta 360 EVO will do the same for vision as my audio recordings do. Thanks for your video - Oh and by the way, does the EVO have a "mic input" so I can plug my binaural microphones into it? - Cheers mate.

Yeah...I own the Evo and bought the HaloFrame for my iPhone 10s. Looks pretty cool for sure BUT...here's the problem. People who don't own the Evo can't expect to go out and buy the HaloFrame and view 3D content on it from other 3D content creators.
The only way to get the 3D .MP4 file that the HaloFrame uses (to view it on your phone) is the file created from the Evo camera. It takes the native Insta360 file on the camera memory, transfers it to your phone and does the conversion on your phone which can take a while depending on the video length.
And the Insta360 app does not allow for anyway to import a file for conversion other than through the Evo.
So no Evo but you have a HaloFrame and a compatible phone...well you're out of luck.
I e-mailed Insta360 and told them they are really missing a great opportunity to offer a cheap way for the average 3D curious consumer to try 3D out with the HaloFrame if they would allow for the Insta360 phone app to import HaloFrame 3D ready content created by other's using the Evo camera.
And as someone who makes money selling content, including 3D....I really wish they'd consider my suggestion.

Love this video. Great to see an "Aussie" guy presenting this. (Some good funny parts too!) I saw this earlier this year (2019) and I ended up buying one. (It's a shame that the Insta360 does NOT have microphone inputs as I would like to record audio in binaural) I also bought the Oculus Go. The 3D 180 VR is very immersive and I use it a lot. However, I downloaded the 360Insta app for the Oculus Go to watch what I shot but found I can only watch one shot at time. Eg: I shot 90 mins of video using 134 shots but i can't sit back for 90mins and watch shots 1 to 34 back to back. I can only watch one shot at a time. Am I doing something wrong or is it the only way to watch my 90 min holiday? (in 34 separate shots...)

What is about the max distance for turning the EVO on and off w/ a phone?

Im interested in do 3d sport photos. Because the 4000-1600 shutter speed will be good like formula1.
I think it could work but you’d need to shoot at a really fast shutter speed!
Question about the Holoframes... They don't make the frame for the larger iPhone 11 Pro Max, do you know of any other way besides the Holoframe to see the content on a phone with the same affect? Maybe 3d glasses or some type of a film to lay over the camera screen? Squint one eye and hop on one leg :)

I like 3D pictures and had a 3D camera for years now. I recently bought an insta 360 nano at a reduced price (65 EUR) to introduce 360 to me and I like it also. With this EVO it seems I get it all in the same camera and at a bigger quality. I’m about to replace my cameras and buy this one. Thanks for the video.

Right off the top, I would say, nice try but no cigar. If I want a 3D camera I would rather but A 3D Camera thought I am not really interested in 3D so I am not a good judge of it all.

They said "they are working on it..maybe"... so..considering also Vuze XR is slimmer, has USB-C connection and same resolution and pretty much same price... i think that probably Vuze XR is better? Have you tested them? What would make EVO better? Just the insta software and better stabilization?

insta360 EVO with 3D projector - such as Panasonic PT-AE7000U? Can I capture the 3D video from Insta360 EVO and play the movie with 3D projector with 3D glasses ? It means I don't use VR headset. However, I use 3D projector with big screen and 3D glasses.

I’ve been trying to buy one of these but they’re not available anywhere right now. Insta 360 doesn’t even have them on the website anymore. I’m speaking of the non-offset cameras for 360, I wonder how bad the stitching would be? The only two cameras in the market consumer wise is this and the Vuze. I think the views looks like a better overall set up except for the fact that you’re stuck with a handle which is not optimal for head mounting to capture 360° content. I don’t get what is up with these companies they just don’t think about the simplest of design elements. Steve Jobs had it right when he said that you look at the users needs first and then design in reverse rather than design and force users to adapt to the engineers concepts. I don’t think we have enough companies like that today in this sector of tech.
For me i stay with my insta one x and gopro fusion and for 180 i will go to vuze xr,the quality look better on the vuze than the evo

I heard the Vuze will have spacial audio coming not sure when since it has four microphones. Planning on going to amazon rainforest and the audio is important along with VR180.

Hi Ben. Looking at my 3d pics and videos in my Samsung vr headset (workflow through the mobile app) and I'm not too impressed with the quality. So much so that I wouldn't post anything.
Yet when I look at your 180 photos or videos.. I'm blown away by them and would be very happy to show If the quality was the same.
My first guess is that I need to edit and export through computer app to get the full quality. But mobile can support upto 4k.. will the extra quality through pc make my content as good as yours.?

Lenses don't have to be "eye distance" apart (especially since eye distance varies). If they were closer, you could get closer to your subject. Farther, not so much. All depends on subject.

Thanks Edward- to be honest I don’t see the need to do it as it’s twice the price and you’d end up with the same result (after a long post production workflow) since you can only use half of the 360 to create 3D (which is exactly the point of the EVO haha)

In an "Endgadget" review I read that Facebook is not currently supported. Not sure how long it will stay that way...

Hi Ben! Great video! Do you know when a successor for the insta360 evo is coming? Unfortunately this device is not available in Germany anymore and I guess that the production will be stopped anywhere soon. Its realy sad that during these days with the massive success of the quest 2 no affordable consumer cam is available which can support the actual capabilities in resolution and framerate of q2 or other state of the art headsets.
I had the desire to buy this 360 camera ... but luckily I read a little on the INSTA360COMMUNITY and INSTA360 One X USER GRUP groups on Facebook and I will definitely not buy it. Soft problems, quality of workmanship, problems with service, etc. completely eliminate the sense of buying this camera - there are no such problems with GOPRO (I know because I use earlier models, including GOPRO SESSION) I recommend reading the posts of users on this group on Facebook before buying and not relying on videos promoting what a great camera

These 360 cameras are simply weak and not worth the very high price:
- they are not waterproof
- weak or even lack of lens protection
- max. battery life 1 hour is a joke
- price not adequate to quality
- selfistic attachment is often damaged in ONE X
For everyday use without fear of damage, wetting, with a long battery life, the only reasonable purchase is GOPRO HERO 7 ... I know that this is not a 360 camera but why would a 360 camera be so unprocessed ???
Actually these aren’t as big issues as you make them out to be. You can get waterproof cases for them, protective cases, spare batteries, selfie stick works fine and the price is cheaper than a new GoPro, also it comes with many more cool features and types of shots you can get than a GoPro.

Man I am so torn. I'm definitely gonna buy one of these in time for summer festivals this year, and I'm very tempted by 3d 180. It's easier to enjoy cos u dont constantly feel like you're missing something behind you, so u can just look ahead, but then if you're willing to move around the 360 footage is great. Obvs the evo can still do 360 tho so youre not missing out if u get that. I'm not too worried about the stitching. Hmm. Choices..
How does it do with audio, the same as the One X? Does it do 360 audio?
The OneX appeals more because it's the one I have and is cheaper

HELP!! I can't connect my phone via the Insta app over wifi to the EVO. It appears to be a common problem?
Not a common problem that I’ve heard of. Works for me- just follow the instructions
As with the Vuze I'm curious to the bone, but not convinced yet. I think, it's because I'm not willing to trade off the "shoot now - point later" of a 360 camera for 3D, in this I'm not too much a fan of the hybrid system.
Anyway, as I played around with 3D and 360 I found out, that UA-cam is greatly supporting this ... and even quite adaptive to the gear you use.
If you replay on a standard computer, it automatically presents in 2D (turnable with the mouse ore the control elements), but offers to activate a 3D analglyph representation, so (if you have a cyan-red goggle around) you can experiance 3D on every non 3D device.
On your mobile (using the app) you get interactive 360 in 2D, but you are offered VR view (=cardboard), then it is 360 in 3D automatically.
So I encourage you to put up your 3D stuff properly on YoutTube, for us to watch the whole experiance you would like to have us at once ;-).
Will do- maybe my comparison can be in 3D :) and I wouldn’t say it’s a trade off as I said in the video, you still have 360 as a backup
@@BenClaremont Not exactly what I ment...I was not referring to the camera but to the method. So even if the Evo has 360, it does not have it in 3D. Therefore you have to point it to the object you are to capture when doing 3D. So for me, 3D is either a dedicated 3D camera or 360 overcapture. Or do I not give enogh justice, is 180 overcapture almost equal to 360, if you just roughly point while recording? Fact is at least, that One X is slightly better in 360 due to the form factor (lens distance). So adding an Evo would be just for the 3D 180...

Es fácil, transcribes lo que dices en el vídeo a texto y ahora lo traduces con Google translater. Aunque fueran traducidos con Google translater sería un gran avance. Nice idea but then the sides wouldn’t be in 3D since you need 2 lenses capturing depth in all directions. You need 6 lenses minimum unfortunately
Bull66: Can I make a suggestion for you to try? It’s not perfect but with a little practice you can get pretty amazing 360 3D stills with the One X (any 360 cam) using an app (I think iOS only) called i3DSteroid360! It’s pretty cool and easy to use. It does require you to take 2 separate 360 photos with the camera moved slightly in one axis. But it does a great job stitching together a full 360 image in 3D.

Would rather have a “holo sleeve” basically where you can slid you’re phone in, and still use you’re case. But also what about a halo sleeve for you’re iPad.. would be much more impressive than the phone! Nice review, currently enjoying my 360 one x while on the road :)

This might be the replacement of my old Fuji FinePix REAL 3D W3 camera, which I bought over 8 years ago. I like 180 degrees better then 360, because I found out that it gives a higher quality and I don't need to look around me, but enjoy 3D movies and pictures.... It's the camera I was waiting for... Great video!
I really like my fuji w3 for photos, however I was always frustrated by the video since the field of view was so low and it had no stabilization. I'll probably get this or the vuze xr - though in several years after the prices drop. Right now is a great time to buy older 3d tvs since it's possible to get a used 4k 3d tv for around 500 usd

I was going for the One X though the bundle price comes up to £476 (starting as £409 standalone) I mean NOPE, the Evo on the other hand starts at £436 with tripod and googles up to £446 for the full bundle.

Good first look at the evo. Will be waiting for the comparisons to other 180 cams. I’ve got the Fusion for 360. Still debating on a 180 cam I really wanna play with 3D.

Surprisingly disappointing product. All that we really needed was a One X that would flip out the cameras. The gap/stitching on the EVO is pretty crazy. Failing that, how about a 90 degree 'glasses' modifier to slap on a One X?

Personally think that it would be a better option to take the One X and add an additional lens on one of the sides for the 180º 3D option. No finicky folding, and would have the best of both cameras. Portrait orientation like the One X would be for 360º. Landscape orientation would be for 180º 3D. Yes the 3rd lens would add to the cost but I think it would be worth it. It would make it harder to keep the battery size, but it could just be a little longer to make up for it.
Nice idea and no doubt they would have tried that, but I imagine there are a lot of engineering logistics to pulling it off and it actually working. I consider this a first prototype from insta and they can only get better from here 👍
Your future as a cyclops is now established. 😆 So now the new camera's accessories will take forever to be available. They will need a 3D adapter for iPads too. I do have a WMR headset for my laptop PC.

wait... am i missing something. I can't see any 360 video or picture examples? The 3D ones look awesome through my Rift S.
Also is there any issues with these cameras getting hot/heating up over long time use like the GoPros?
I hope for a return of 3D TVs, mine broke a couple of months ago and i'm looking in the local second hand market as they stopped to make new 3D TVs about 3 years ago. Perhaps Insta360 will release an holoframe for TVs 😂😂😂

Everything indicates that you can attach a second Evo and get 3d videos in 360 degrees! The more I analyze the camera, the more I like it. I hope that oculus quest can move videos of almost 12k
Everything indicates? What is this everything? I see no indications.. stitching 2 cameras together would work for flat 360 but I don’t see how you could retain depth on the sides when there is no left eye/right eye connection between the two cameras

Quick question, do you know if I can film in 3D mode upside down on a selfie-stick? Will the image come out upside down & if so, can I rotate it? Awesome video as always Ben and thanks for staying on top of all the latest news! I suppose this could be something cool if you want to create and watch your own videos yourself with the accessory case needed, but these videos aren't really sharable unless someone wants to buy a new case for their phone or might happen to have a 3d videwer. I love my Insta360 One X but won't be buying one of these anytime soon. Anyone remember when 3D TV's were the next greatest thing? lol
