    Wow, you guys are making me really excited about this new career/art field. I used to be a photojournalist back in the day. I've been having yearnings to do photography again but didn't want to go back to what I had been doing before. I've been looking around for something that would be creative, new, and profitable too. I think i have found it. Love your videos, they are filled with really useful knowledge and tips.

    Good video, but I’d disagree on the eye-level height. Chest height tends to work best, especially when indoors, as most things that people will want to look at will be in the lower half of the frame and having the camera at a slightly lower level provides both a more pleasing perspective and also creates less convergence.

    • @BenClaremont
      @BenClaremont  5 років тому +5

      I’d say it depends on the location as in my experience most venues have had more interesting details in the upper half than the lower half. For example this hotel. Also when viewing in a headset, chest height can feel a little too low.

    • @DaveBowman
      @DaveBowman 5 років тому +6

      Ben Claremont Indeed it does. There isn’t one-size-fits-all and I think people should assess the environment and then decide what will work best. Hotel lobbies tend to have a lot of global interest, whereas bedrooms tend not to have much above chest height that wouldn’t otherwise have the viewer looking down. So different heights for different scenarios.

      In my fours years of doing virtual tours professionally I came to one rule of thumb: The more narrow a room the lower I get the shot. Most shots I take from ca. 1.60m height (I am 1.80m). Also the height depends on the nearest most important furniture - if there is a bed or armchairs and sofas I usually lower the shot to the height of the head of someone sitting on them.

      A full frame camera with a nodal head will give you the highest quality tour.

    •  3 роки тому

      yeah rule one of architectural photography is in general to shoot interiors from 1,40-1,60m. Also from lower perspectives, verticals and higher objects look way dramatic than in reality. of course it is not a must and sometimes you want to avoid from some stuff like ugly table legs, dirty walls or just want a open sight but it doesn't happen to often and my rule is 1,40-1,60m.

    One of the most challenging and post process intensive issues is using supplemental incandescent light. The blue vs orange will be apparent regardless of your white balance setting. It is a good method to bracket exposure for two white balance settings and plan for some photoshop time.

    Another excellent tutorial, Ben!
    1) Can you create a video about using roundme.com for creating and hosting virtual tours? Is that you favorite website for hosting virtual tours?
    2) What are your thoughts on placing the 360 camera at the midpoint between the floor and ceiling to avoid keystoning? For example, if the ceiling were 20 feet from the floor, would placing the camera at 10 feet high be the optimal spot? Or would it be an unnatural looking viewpoint for a person who would normally view the room at their own height?
    Thanks!

    I am struggling with choosing between the V and the Z1. Totally new here and have really enjoyed your videos, so thank you. I am interested shooting for mostly virtual tours and many of the photographers around me do not do them. I am both a real estate agent and a carpenter and I, NOW, have many uses for this type of photography. Being the V is a older and a lot less and with this tough time it would be better financially. I'm not opposed to spending the 1k for the z1 but is it going to give me THAT much of a difference when shooting a VT especially since most of my clients will be viewing on mobile and desktop/laptops? I have zero editing experience and I'm looking for something I can use right out of the box and the RICOH software seems to be a good option until I become proficient with LR or another PP software. I just need something ASAP since they have suspended any and all showings/open houses. PLEASE HELP!!!

      @@BenClaremont Hi Ben, I have been with Roundme for over a year. Unfortunately the rumor is that it is dead. There is no correspondence coming out of Roundme. Just a heads up.
      I would love to know what your friend is doing on the situation. Thanks love your vids.

    Ben, I hope you see this. I have purchased the Ricoh Theta z1. But how do you get correct exposure for your images? When shooting in manual mode there is no exposure meeter at all. I feel like I'm just guessing all the time, squinting at my phone screen and just praying the highlights aren't blown and the shadows crushed. Would also love to see your workflow for shooting and especially editing HDR images. I've been stacking RAW dng photos but have run into limitations with Ricoh's stitching software.

      Ben Claremont I don’t know of any software who does it on a 360 image. I know hotspot are yesterday’s technology on a html app.

    Do you find that clients are often unwilling to say, close the pool area for an hour, to get your scans done? Or do you prefer not to ask them to for some reason? Would that be considered unprofessional?

    What did you guys use to edit the tour to get the window pulls? Are you using a 3rd party app or is there a Theta Z1 app that comes with the camera? Thanks...

    I just got my first project to shoot a hotel converted to apartments which will be about 500 photos in total. How do I maintain the battery on my Ricoh Theta Z1 charged during the entire shoot? I was thinking about taking several battery packs and use velcro to attach it to the base of the monopod and use a long usb cable to keep it charged or get the Ulanzi battery pack that goes on the monopod pole so it wont show in the pictures

    Hi Ben,
    Thank you for this.
    Can I ask you what software/platform do you use for Virtual Tours (preferred with Google Maps/Street View integration)?
    I try 3D Vista and it's amazing, but I like to hear your opinion.
    Regards and keep healthy.

      Like we discussed, using a monopod should avoid this as it is usually perfectly straight 👍

    If you are shooting a bathroom with a mirror and you can not move left or right to make it work, lower the camera to just below the counter top.

    • @BenClaremont
      @BenClaremont  4 роки тому

      To be honest I wouldn’t recommend this as it turns the view into a child’s perspective, which doesn’t really help sell the location.

    One of the biggest fears I have is falling over, Amazon sells "Mic stand to 1/4 camera adapters" I literally DRIVE AROUND with my 360 cam on the Microphone stand because of how much weight there is on the bottom. This by far is a GAME CHANGER, I will never own a Monopod.

    • @BenClaremont
      @BenClaremont  4 місяці тому

      A good monopod should do the same thing, with far less editing to do later to remove it. If you’re shooting from a car then don’t use a mic stand, use a car mount.

    • @5710fpilot
      @5710fpilot 4 місяці тому

      @BenClaremont as far as the editing it only is a black dot to remove. I commonly get 20-30kt wind and there's no way I'd trust a monopod. The car example is to tell its steady and keeps it upright! 😉

    Thanks to you I own the Z-1, I decided to go with Kuula, I have a Bushman monopod on the way and I downloaded the retouch app, so obviously your content is awesome. I wanted to ask about the retouch app. You have to download to your phone before you can edit correct? If so I'll just remove the monopod in LR.

    Hello, i'm trying to start a $$ business with my Insta360OneX2 but i have issues with de Saturation, its to high. Can you tell us the settings that you use in your Ricoh? Do I have to arrange the settings in each photo depending on the light we have? I like a "white wall" effect and not the ones i am getting with a tons of color influence.... SOS!!! Regards from Mexico City!

    Hi Ben. Why don't you use the Matterport capture app ? It works perfectly with the Z1.

    • @BenClaremont
      @BenClaremont  5 років тому +1

      Because it doesn’t allow manual control of the camera to fix tricky lighting situations (most virtual tour locations have tricky lighting). I will however make a tutorial about Matterport soon :)

      Yes or combine 2 images taken in quick succession when you simply move to another part of the shot

    I always take 2 shots of each pano where I stand in two different spots. I bring them into photoshop on two layers and mask out myself so there is no on in the image.

      Me too, slightly more pos-production but a lot quicker than having to hide each time. Pretty essential too if doing a big wide open space like a large garden with nothing to hide behind..
