  • Emil Zatopek is one of the greatest distance runners of the 20th Century. With that being said, there are often questions asked about the efficiency of his running form. In this video, Tyson has a look at his running technique to see if there is anything in the criticism surrounding his technique.

He was my running hero. I only learnt about by reading books about him in the 1970's.
If he was alive today with modern training techniques it would be a case of:
"Well, thankyou all for coming but there isn't a human alive who can get close to me".
Probably had a resting heart rate of 30 or something ridiculous....

I heard about this gu from a book called "Breath", by a guy called James Nestor, he talked about how zatopek used a strange breathing technique where he would breath fast into the nose and slow out, zatopek said its very painful to breathe like that when running long distance but it made him run much faster and longer

Yeah, Tyson totally whiffs on Zatopek’s breathing style.

Zato (nick name given to him by his close friend Alan Mimoun) is my number one hero. There are so many things that made him great but for me was his mental tenacity. To be able to do the things he accomplished (during racing) could only be done by his hard core training regiment. He developed himself to be able to do things like 50 quarters, each in around 70 seconds resting maybe 200 yards and then another 1/4. He would do this at AM forest in a well marked 400 meters and then he would repeat the same thing (another 50 quarters) at PM! He was actually, the inventor of modern day distance training. He was psychologically the toughest runner of all time.

The leader in hypoventilation training. Ran in combat boots with his wife on his back. Incredible athlete.
