@@MRLBRMNN Czech athlets did´nt have money at this time. The money (little bit) was allocated by communists from the team management and athlets had to account evereything (glass of water during marathon for example).

I know you want to keep it light but Emil zatopec. Aka the iron horse was one of the best if not the best of the Olympic runners just saying
He also ran 160 plus miles a week. He loved running. so, before anyone thinks it was luck or a fluke..its pure will, courage, and hard work. 160 plus miles a week!!
Different era, but still the only person EVER to do the triple (5k, 10k and marathon). His double in the 5 and 10 has been duplicated before, starting in the next Olympics by Vladmir Kuts of the Soviet Union. There have been a few who doubled at 5 and 10 since, including Yifter in 1980 (ETH - RIP), Kenenisa Bekele (ETH-2008) and Mo Farah (2012 and 2016) - doing this in the modern era is even more amazing.
But as for the TRIPLE, the only one close is Lasse Viren (FIN who did the 5/10 double twice in 72 and 76). He came closest with a 5th place in the marathon in 76 THE DAY AFTER winning the 5000m (- BUT with the "aid" of blood-doping - not cheating back then).
Ztaopek's training was insane - he just worked harder than anyone. 60X400m intervals is one of the legendary training sessions he is rumoured to have done, along with unusual ways to build strength and endurance, such as sprints in snow in combat boots.
He is a hero to his country in a way which transcends sport. He stood on the side of the protestors in the 1968 Prague Spring, for which he was expelled from the Party and exiled away from Prague for several years. Even when he was allowed to return to his wife, he was given a low-level job and wiped from public life. Only after democracy came to Czechoslovakia was he officially pardoned.
Even if this video does not do him justice, hopefully people are still willing to learn about his life, and what he stood for.
My grandad was his boss in army and also his friend. My dad used to call him uncle, it was a really nice guy.

And its not like he was the first ethiopan that could compete he came from czech republic which does not have great runners. I honestly think that he just worked harder than anyone of his competitors at that time...

I came here after reading Born To Run, where I first came to know about Zatopek. Brilliant book, brilliant athlete!

@@noba5420 the accented letter "á" is slightly prolonged, it's pronounced as in the word "bar". Try to write his name into a google translate, choose Czech language and let it pronounce for you :)

I seem to remember reading that his wife won the javelin in the same Olympics. Before running the marathon, he said something like, "At present, the gold medal count in the Zatopek household is 2-1. This is much too close."

Plot twist: He's from the year 2179 where time machines are invented. He always finished the marathons in his time last or close to last. Now he wants to win and travels back in time where people are not that evolved nor trained in sprinting as they are in 2179.

The podium at the end is not the one of Helsinki marathon. And by the way, Mimoun from France did the same 4 years later in Melbourne Olympics: 1st marathon and 1st place !!
"Effortless in the pursuit of glory." Well hardly. No-one grimmaced and rocked and rolled more than drama queen Emile! It was all laid on for the fans as he was often seen using a solid running style. The only thing he had missing from his dramatic performances was Bannister's routine collapse on crossing the line.

How much distance running has evolved since 1952! His winning time was 2:23 which would have earned him 86th place at Rio, far behind Kipchoge's 2:08.

His time wouldn't even win the women's marathon, let that sink in. I think it's safe to say, the competition hadn't heated up then.
@@rimun5235 to be fair: He won the 5000m AND the 10000m before he won the marathon! AND he never ran a marathon ever before that .. so let that sink in... don't dismiss him to early.. he was clearly a runner who was a league on his own.

There's an interesting tidbit, I don't know if good or bad, but basically the only reason he started having an interest in running was because of the communist party's politics. During his time, the communist party of his country considered that having a healthy body and a healty mind was something everyone should strive for and made it mandatory for anyone who was fit enough to compete in sports to, well, compete in a sport. Factories then had sport teams and coaches, which is who told Zatopek to run a race in the first place, which he really didn't want to, but had no other choice. He did, and came second (that was the first race he ever competed in), but wasn't happy with the result so he decided to take running seriously after that.

Great story, lousy video. His running "style" was horrible, partially due to a shorter left leg. Some say this was an advantage in the curves over 5000 and 10000 meters. The other thing totally omitted is his grunting and heavy breathing, rumored to either intimidate competitors and/or display exhaustion to confuse them when he was actually doing fine. His nickname (at least in Germany) was the "Prager Lokomotive", the locomotive from Prague and that sums it up. Lastly: those impersonators are just pitiful.
1:50 Rip that guy who fell, imagine how bad that must of felt! Not the physical pain, the emotional and mental!
