The biggest problem I have with the story is how it unintentionally normalises toxic or flat out abusive behaviour between Fluttershy and Discord Putting the whole kidnapping thing aside, there are multiple instances where Discord acts incredibly toxic and even downright abusive towards Fluttershy in the story. He never respects Fluttershy's personal space, he teleported her out of the room and held her in a threatening manner when Fluttershy didn't want to leave her room, he acts butthurt when she reveals her nightmares to him (also he watches her in her sleep), he looses his temper AGAIN when she rejects him, hypnotists her to try to force her go marry him (the whole conformation between them in episode 9 in her room is just really uncomfortable in general) ends up HITTING her but the worst part of all of this is that it's Fluttershy that learns a lesson, not Discord. Yes he does try to apologise in the last episode and there are a few times where his behaviour is called out, but they also have Fluttershy apologising, and a lot of the time it feels like there trying to downplay how he treats her. Apparently the original actor for Discord even left the project because he felt uncomfortable with how the relationship was potrayed, and personally I don't blame him, Discord is basically a 'nice guy' in this story I also wanna bring up the whole AJ and Spike romance because oof, even as a kid I found it really weird. I don't think SF had any ill intentions but even then it's still really weird and kinda gross to have this relationship even though the show itself made it clear that Spike was WAY younger then the ponies (who are at least young adults). I think instead of AJ having feelings towards Spike, have it where she wants to help Spike realise that he and Rarity aren't gonna work (for obvious reasons) but is struggling because she doesn't want Spikes feelings to get hurt. You could even have it where its revealed in the scene between AJ and Zecora that AJ actually had feelings towards Rarity, but was heartbroken when she was in love with someone else, so she doesn't want Spike to feel that heartbreak I just find it really uncomfortable how the story unintentionally normalises toxic relationships and partners, it's clear that wasn't the intent and this isn't me encouraging others to harass DF or anyone who worked on the project, I hope they all can learn from this experience and improve as writers/artist/voice actors
Totally agree. Fantasizing about toxic relationships is a no no. I do feel like it could've been really great if they fleshed out a few things and fixed the dynamic. Especially because the power dynamic is apparent. Not the Spike and Applejack thing tho, that's cursed 💀

I don’t want to say your concerns aren’t valid because they totally are and bother me too, but DF was a child when she wrote this and seemingly took a lot from couples and tropes from this time period. The “bad boy” stuff was all the rage and I’m gonna be honest, the 2000s and 2010s were extremely sexist and very much impacted how people including (including me) perceived relationships and whatnot

Honestly, I approve of fluttercord as a ship, as both sides while they do feel like opposites, are oddly compatible, fluttershy while timid is kind and is willing to show kindness to anyone that needs it, discord while chaotic does clearly crave attention, and knows how to use his power for entertainment, which are seen in the show, and discord does clearly have a bond form in the main show, though me is no brony so take my opinion with a brick of salt. However the way it’s done in bride, was a bit iffy, namely because we see basically no build up to the start of the romantic side of the relationship, but thankfully daughter of discord did make the relationship feel much much more honest. As discord cares for his family and shows legit love to fluttershy.But wow, apple spike as a ship, we asked 1000 people wether they approve of it, survey says, DING 900 people, NO number one answer, 99 people with eh, and only one person with yes. I would honestly see spike maybe being single and adopting children as a more likely scenario

Fluttershy is 100% also an asshole by implying all Discord wants is love as if he didnt threaten an unborn child. Okay I don't like the dynamic of who discord and fluttershy is shown. Like If Discord get angry all of a sudden Fluttershy has to apoligize? They can't have an equal standing. It the trope of a helpless girl and The strong man, and how she falls in love with the man. The reason why I like Discord and Fluttershy together in the show is that they were in equal footing and respected how they wanted to be treated. They had tea parties and it was cute. In my little pony there was an episode of how Discord invited Fluttershy to his house and tried to change for her and he was so kind and thoughtful of his image to Fluttershy. And how Fluttershy accepted his way of living was heartwarming. That is why I liked Discord and Fluttershy together both romantically and plantonically. But in Bride of Discord Discord just can't respect Fluttershy and It sucks. No hate but I just really didn't like the realtionship. Don't let me start on Applejack and Spike. Crazy ngl.
bride of discord is so funny to me bc i grew up watching and completely in LOVE with “daughter of discord” especially the romance with screwball and mothball! but i never watched bride of discord.. i think it fueled many of my favorite tropes and themes in media today

the only thing I remembered from this series was the art and music, I didn’t really pay attention to what was actually going on in the story,so you can imagine the whip lash I felt when the whole spike x apple jack and Discord’s REALLY negative behaviors got brought up-
god, hearing about this in details really make you realize it was a child, at oldest a young teen, who wrote that. Of course the young teen would hold the "Spike/AppleJack is ok because it's only seven years and he's more mature than he looks and at worse AppleJack can wait a bit for him to be older" speech. Because when you're young and crushing on someone older, you imagine yourself with them, and when you reach the maturity level of understanding that an adult and a child is wrong, you still don't know why it's wrong exactly, and you try to find excuse to keep imagining yourself with that older crush. So this reflects in your writing, and since it seems to be very "everyone gets in a straight relationship" oriented (because once again the person is young so simply imagine the straight ships and thinks everyone needs to end up paired with someone), they can't imagine an option where AppleJack stays celibate and is just friend with Spike, so they get together. the abusive relationship between Fluttershy and Discord is simply a product of the bad boy romance, and a general lack of understanding about romantic relationship because the person is too young. With in addition the general sexism that is still present nowadays, they didn't have a lot of examples in medias of showing the female character forming a bond and having the relationship be developped well, they just had the example of a guy being a bit dominant and the girl falling for his secret soft side. And they were too young to understand that the "I can fix him" scenario needs to show actual fixing at one point, and let the girl have the possibility to dump the guy. At one point in your life you're just old enough to understand that something isn't godd but too young to understand the details. Discord gets upset, it's bad! But he feels bad and says sorry after, so it's ok. Except when it keeps happening with similar scenarios, it's not ok, but you're too young to realize that. Discord does bad things, but it's ok! Because he does them out of love and loneliness and feels bad, and says sorry after. Except it keeps happening, and nothing is made to show Fluttershy having the actual upper hand in the relationship except a few times where she gets mad and puts a boundary (that will be broken because the writer did not truly get what the boundary was about). Anyway, it's fascinating to take a look back at these kinds of fanfics
I grew up with Daughter of discord, not Bride of discord so the assortment of musical theater songs took me out so bad as a musical fan😭 i was caught so off guard when I heard phantom and Les mis
I approve of the ship but the way it was done in bride was a bit, uncomfortable. Though daughter of discord, the relationship feels more genuine sorta helping ease the stress of bride.

1:09:39 One thing I'll disagree with you here is that Fluttershy wasn't being an asshole because she indirectly downplayed all the harm Discord caused to everyone by calling her friends rude for not supporting her wedding. Like yeah Fluttershy is his main victim but he also took Twilight's horn hostage and also took her sister-in-law/unborn niece hostage and threatened their lives. Fluttershy is 100% also an asshole by implying all Discord wants is love as if he didnt threaten an unborn child. Granted, she probably wasnt thinking about that but the others, especially Twilight, probably were.

Okay I don't like the dynamic of who discord and fluttershy is shown. Like If Discord get angry all of a sudden Fluttershy has to apoligize? They can't have an equal standing. It the trope of a helpless girl and The strong man, and how she falls in love with the man. The reason why I like Discord and Fluttershy together in the show is that they were in equal footing and respected how they wanted to be treated. They had tea parties and it was cute. In my little pony there was an episode of how Discord invited Fluttershy to his house and tried to change for her and he was so kind and thoughtful of his image to Fluttershy. And how Fluttershy accepted his way of living was heartwarming. That is why I liked Discord and Fluttershy together both romantically and plantonically. But in Bride of Discord Discord just can't respect Fluttershy and It sucks. No hate but I just really didn't like the realtionship. Don't let me start on Applejack and Spike. Crazy ngl.

sorry emma but there's nothing overly critical about this. this does read as an extremely toxic, imbalanced relationship. i think everything you've said about it is right. i'm pretty glad the way we write romances have changed

the only thing I remembered
from this series was the art and music, I didn’t really pay attention to what was actually going on in the story,so you can imagine the whip lash I felt when the whole spike x apple jack and Discord’s REALLY negative behaviors got brought up-
god, hearing about this in details really make you realize it was a child, at oldest a young teen, who wrote that. Of course the young teen would hold the "Spike/AppleJack is ok because it's only seven years and he's more mature than he looks and at worse AppleJack can wait a bit for him to be older" speech. Because when you're young and crushing on someone older, you imagine yourself with them, and when you reach the maturity level of understanding that an adult and a child is wrong, you still don't know why it's wrong exactly, and you try to find excuse to keep imagining yourself with that older crush. So this reflects in your writing, and since it seems to be very "everyone gets in a straight relationship" oriented (because once again the person is young so simply imagine the straight ships and thinks everyone needs to end up paired with someone), they can't imagine an option where AppleJack stays celibate and is just friend with Spike, so they get together.
the abusive relationship between Fluttershy and Discord is simply a product of the bad boy romance, and a general lack of understanding about romantic relationship because the person is too young. With in addition the general sexism that is still present nowadays, they didn't have a lot of examples in medias of showing the female character forming a bond and having the relationship be developped well, they just had the example of a guy being a bit dominant and the girl falling for his secret soft side. And they were too young to understand that the "I can fix him" scenario needs to show actual fixing at one point, and let the girl have the possibility to dump the guy. At one point in your life you're just old enough to understand that something isn't godd but too young to understand the details. Discord gets upset, it's bad! But he feels bad and says sorry after, so it's ok. Except when it keeps happening with similar scenarios, it's not ok, but you're too young to realize that. Discord does bad things, but it's ok! Because he does them out of love and loneliness and feels bad, and says sorry after. Except it keeps happening, and nothing is made to show Fluttershy having the actual upper hand in the relationship except a few times where she gets mad and puts a boundary (that will be broken because the writer did not truly get what the boundary was about).
Anyway, it's fascinating to take a look back at these kinds of fanfics

I approve of the ship but the way it was done in bride was a bit, uncomfortable. Though daughter of discord, the relationship feels more genuine sorta helping ease the stress of bride.
