Imagine if the daughter of Satan came to your school and you specifically made fun of her for being the daughter of Satan. Those bullies have the self preservation instinct of bags of gravel
@@starlitcentaur Blue Exorcist is kind of like the opposite of this. Satan's son who hates being Satan's son goes to school where kids learn how to kill Satan's minions and his classmates actually like him. Even after they learn he's the son of Satan they still like him (even Bon!) and don't hold his parentage over him.
I shouldn’t be surprised being that she was racist to different looking hoofed animals. I’m season one (I don’t remember the episode) but when the zebra came on screen the first time rarity judges the way that the zebra looks.
Tbf it makes sense in context, since she is Minuette's daughter, which the fans headcanon as being called Colgate since she looks like toothpaste as well 😅
Omg I hated Aquafresh, lol. I didn’t like how she acted to Screwy, and tried to get Lightning to ditch her friend. She apologizes to Lightning at the end and I couldn’t help thinking “are you gonna apologize to Screwy? No? Kay.” No hate on the audio drama or the writing or anything! That’s just how I felt watching that character, and it’s valid to feel differently.
Fun fact: the voice actors for both Discord (DaWillstanator) and Screwball (Katie Patterson) met through DOD and Will ended up proposing to Katie and they’re married now!
I still can't get over the fact that fluttershy going into labor is the most replayed scene. LIKE WHO WAS THERE JUST REPLAYING THAT SCENE OF HER GOING INTO LABOR LIKE IT WAS THE BEST SCENE OUT OF THE WHOLE EPISODE 💀
Atleast according to one of the comments down here, it seems the author had some sort of internalised homophobia. Apparently there was a subplot in a fic (either DOD or a sequel) where Rainbow finds out she's ace and dreads ANYBODY thinking she's gay. Luckily though I think the author has improved and is doing better nowadays haha
I personally never understood the “dad hates whoever his daughter dates” like in the beginning he knew nothing aside from “he’s a boy who my daughter likes” those dads always were weird in sitcoms. Also apparently in the og fanfic, applejack and spike got married when he turned 18?! 🤢
The problems with Discord in this fanfic are the same problems I have with Hopper from Stranger Things in season 3. Characters, especially men who suddenly have daughters in the story, are suddenly written into possessive and angry manchildren who act like their "disobedient" daughters are their property and no other male may possess them, but under the guise of being protective. When they NEVER showed those traits beforehand. It's not funny at all and is so uncomfortable.
It was even worse in ST because in season 2 they had a whole storyline dealing with hopper learning to accept eleven being her own person and that he shouldn’t be too overprotective of her and then they just forgot it for season 3. Very infuriating.
@@Honeybunny_bunmost of the characters didn’t really act like “80s kids/people” if you really think about it. like Steve immediately accepting robin when she came out to him. the writers made a decision to make Steve more likable by not being homophobic, so I don’t see why they couldn’t have toned down the weirdness with hopper
I vividly remember being really confused why the art style was always changing while I watched it, I guess younger me really didn’t grasp the concept of multiple artists.
Something I'll never understand, even as a fanfic editor myself, is why fanfic authors will go the route of bashing the characters they dislike in the stories they write. I mean, they have the option of "improving" the character so that they aren't as bad as they believe them to be, but instead choose to have them behave like caricatures of their canon selves while they undergo misfortune after misfortune. Character bashing is just such an annoying trope...
Oh definitely. It's one of the reasons why I don't like the MLB fandoms because with a few exceptions, every character especially the main two Adrien and Marinette are demonized to death with ppl analyzing how they act, what they do, and how it makes this character in the wrong when it barely matters, just move along with the show. Like I get the writing isn't good and the characters are weird, but you shouldn't go on hate rampages because this character didn't acted like you wanted to.
@@whichcache2517 Yeah or not make Adrien into a assaulter? Like seriously people, the world is your oyster in fanfic, you can go wild replacing all of the characters lamps but instead you spend your time saying why this character should be the antagonist and why they should be replaced with this other guy and just. Idk. Feels like ppl give so much crap to fictional characters that can't do anything.
@@cookiecat3324 Even characters like Genma Saotome or Danzo Shimura aren’t exempt from this, because even though they’re both assholes, it’s common for writers to strip away all the nuance before they’re just husks that inly exist to be ounching bags for the protagonists.
@@cookiecat3324 Anyhow, dunno if you’d be interested, but there is a crossover fanfic by an author I like (Crossoverpairinglover) called “Miraculous Demigods”, which crosses MLB with Percy Jackson and the Olympians. I dunno much about the ensorcelled ladybird show, so I can’t say much on how well the fanfic emulates the show, but if you’re ever curious, give it a look sometime (I’d link it, but you know, UA-cam hides comments with links).
The Red Shoes being Cheese Sandwich thing was kinda interesting actually. Red Shoes was originally an OC I think cuz the author couldn't think of anyone to ship Pinkie with. Then season 4 came out and we got Cheese Sandwich. The author liked him enough to retcon that Red Shoes WAS Cheese but under a different identity.
@@UnexpectedCake Ehhhh, it's a bit complicated because the actual writer of that episode said that since the character model was a filly model then the character was a filly, even if the script used he/him pronouns; but the showrunner stuck to the script genndering even though the episode itself does nothing to indicate it.
A few more things about this series! 1. Yep, the creator despises Rarity solely for the fact that she turned down Spike and ignored his advances. This was glossed over in the audio dramas, but the fanfics delve deeper into treating Rarity like she's pony Satan for rejecting Spike. She's constantly descried as being catty and jealous over everyone or is downright nasty and self-centered with her friend's problems, eg "Fluttershy is a total moron for not getting over her anxiety and not getting laid! It's ruining MY image!". 2. Red Shoes was retconned into being Cheese Sandwich under the Witness Protection Program because his ex went crazy after they broke up and kept stalking him. In a wacky turn of events, she was actually just trying to return his scarf to him the whooooole time! It's in one of the side-stories. 3. Rarity's weird racism isn't the only weird racism. In the fic, when Screwball says Mothball loves her, Twilight gets pissed off at her and snaps that it's been scientifically proven they cannot feel love. And in the fic, too, Chrysalsis says that the only reason Mothball has a heart is because his dad was a pony, not a changeling. 4. The creator wrote another fanfic where Rainbow Dash finds out she's asexual and she INSTANTLY becomes a raging homophobe that panics the second anyone thinks she's attracted to women and has a nightmare that The Gays are going to put her on trial for the cardinal sin of being asexual and force her into being a lesbian because... reasons...? Worth noting this fanfic is an **extremely old shame** for the author and in the final chapter she says she never actually wanted to finish it but felt the obligation to.
the asexual rainbow dash fic thing i never knew about and am like,, ouch, it sounds kind of like some kind of internalized struggle for the author put into a fanfic. honestly hope they're doing alright and is moving on from that
@@curley-clown They most certainly are, they are trying to better themselves as a person and I can't imagine they're too proud of the headspace they were in at that time.
With the Rainbow Dash coming out as asexual fic, I feel like the author at the time didn't know that being ace does not make them aromantic(most of the time at least)
If I remember correctly too, wasn’t the reason Spike and AJ didn’t have a bio baby until way later was bc Celestia forbade them from ever having a bio kid due to being different species??
I remember when I was younger I felt bad for rarity and I still do. the thing she said to apple jack was racist and shitty but I feel as if the author wrote her and her situation that bad was because rarity didn’t acknowledge spike’s feelings. Y’know like a normal adult does ?
What i REALLY love about mothball's designs is that whenever he's disguised as a normal pony, the artists actually put thought into his cutie-mark. If you look carefully each time, his cutie-mark hints at him "being a mysterious pony" and that he's in a disguise. By far one of my most favourite details created by the artists!
so interesting to compare the fandom’s general idealized versions of the adult cast’s lives compared to where they ended up in the actual finale-hardly anybody is coupled up, Pinkie Pie and Cheese Sandwich + Applejack and Rainbow Dash being the only ones who are expressly together/married, the former pair also being the only one to have had a kid at all. i really do like the way the finale subtly challenges the cultural status quo of what it means to be a fulfilled adult woman :)
@@MILDMONSTER1234 AppleDash is also hinted, not confirmed. Overall there is a leaked scenario of some sorts in which it implies both are canon (I mean this and Fluttercord)
You have to realize that this was likely done because the writers didn’t want to shove some side character down people’s throats in the last episode of the series. Having a main character show up with some extra whom they didn’t have any buildup with would just be seen negatively. Not to mention any kids. It’s just smart to not make any pairings unless they built up during your series. The series didn’t focus on romance, so it doesn’t make sense to shoehorn it in at the end. I personally felt like the Appledash hinting was unnecessary. Just let us decide whether any of the characters got married or not.
True. Even if people are divided on shipping it, Fluttershy and Discord’s bond in the show is much better. He’s more calm, witty and not too over the top with his mischief aside from having his chaos be comedic. In the show he’s more respecting Fluttershy’s boundaries and interests, they just got such a wholesome bond. In DOD and BOD, yeah it insists he’s changed but not showing how. I mean, MLP itself shown how he changed in a pretty straightforward way so I don’t know why they couldn’t have utilized it from the show. I definitely do not like how a lot of the relationships were toxic. The only fairly healthy relationship I can think of was SoarinDash, but yeah.
@@surraciddac170 in the show he isn't calm and when he was her friend he was manipulative but after the episode he knows that she is his friend and he gets over being manipulative but i think one thing in the BOD that he wasn't really......how to say this ehmmm developed he wasn't developed like our discord. our discord knew that he needed to change or he turn back to a stone and he didn't have friends and he was sad he will go back to being alone. in BOD he didn't change he was planning being evil no one changed him like the show until he took a bride wish he learned many things so gg
On Rarity being the punching bag of this series: I distinctly remember being 10 years old watching a QnA with the author (idk if it’s still on their channel), when they’re asked who their least favorite pony is. They respond saying that it was a tie between Rainbow Dash, and you guessed it, Rarity. Their reasoning being that Rarity often uses Spike and disregards his feelings for her. I wouldn’t be surprised if Rarity’s terrible life was the author’s way of getting their feelings out. Again this was YEARS ago, so idk if the video is still up, but it definitely happened.
@@billyboleson2830 It is more up to interpretation, but then again how Rarity could have not see that Spike had a crush on her, considering it was painfully obvious
@{𝒯𝒽𝑒 𝒮𝒾𝓁𝓋𝑒𝓇 𝑀𝑜𝑜𝓃} But seem to have knew that Spike had a crush on her in the episode Secret of My Excess because she stopped Spike from telling her because he already knew, and I'm not sure being too busy will actually stop someone from seeing someone else having a crush on them.
calling out grooming? thats nono lets write her out to be racist instead !! like have your weird grudges against these fictional ponies ( which i find it weird how the creator hated rarity for rejecting spike ) but why make her racist 😭
I despise the thing AJ and spike has going on,hes literally growing as the story progresses and it just feels so gross.Expesially the hinting of "waiting him to be older" at the beginning, its so p3dophilic, almost reminds me of grown man counting down the years of underage girls turning legal.
@@KaminoKatie Well we must keep in mind that these works are pretty old, might have not tought abaut it at all while making it. Im not sure if they recognize it at a problem today but i sure hope they do.
Also I can’t take Chrysalis’ entire “revenge plot” seriously. I honestly can’t see her throwing a massive temper tantrum just because someone didn’t reciprocate her romantic feelings. Makes Starlight’s backstory look perfectly rational in comparison.
#justiceforgemstone rarity was my favorite character growing up and still is as a 20 year old she doesn't deserve this treatment by the author and neither does her kid
Also- the author, DF is a notorious jerk (that's putting it LIGHTLY) to their fans. Look at their replies to comments absolute rudeness, condescending attitude, and overall "better than you" tone. They also love to elaborate how they graduated as a major in creative writing and how they minored in relationship psychology. Considering the flaws of this fanfic thats maaaad ironic.
Thank you for saying this. I'm afraid to comment on her videos anymore because she snapped at me years ago when I was a literal child. I asked her about what asexual meant (because she mentioned being asexual) Funny enough I came out as asexual a few years after. It doesn't take much effort to be kind, but clearly she thinks so.
@@pepperimps01 Fellow Ace here too 🖖 I get it. @@MordyMcCheese I get it to some extent that it can be annoying, especially since some people can be intentionally ignorant but I honestly didn't think she would reply. I also can't imagine doing that to a fan? Like jeez😂
So I found out WHY Red Shoes is a Cheese Sandwich clone and it's THE MOST teenage fanfic author retcon plot twist explanation possible (that's not meant as an insult, btw, I mean that as in it gave me flashbacks to being 14 and writing the exact same type of thing). So, according to TVTropes, in DF's later fic CMC: The Next Generation, it's revealed that "Red Shoes was actually Cheese Sandwich in disguise (which Pinkie knew about) because he was on the run from a crazy ex-marefriend (who happens to be Surprise, the G1 pony Pinkie Pie was based off of) who he believed was hunting him down (she was really just trying to return a scarf he left at her house)." So, yeah, he is literally Cheese in a wig. Wild.
@@highbahamut6188 Basically, toxic and unhealthy stereotypes and tropes surrounding straight characters/relationships that are presented as normal and okay. Some examples of this include: a lack of communication in a marriage leading to spousal arguments and misunderstandings that aren't properly resolved, an emphasis on dating members of the opposite sex as well as getting married and having lots of children asap, and pervading ideas of being straight being the only valid way to live one's life and be happy. The long running series that that inspired all these stereotypes and tropes is called _Society_ btw.
@@highbahamut6188 In itself it's not a bad thing but when it's portrayed as *the only way* it becomes toxic. It makes people internalize that they should do it even if they may not want to. So a piece of media like this one where every character end up married with children gives up the impression that life is all about these things and nothing else. And when you don't want kids/have tokophobia or simply isn't straight, it can feel like big pressure.
I know DF isn't a fan of Rainbow Dash and Rarity as characters but it really sucks to rewatch DoD and BoD sometimes cause they're really one-dimensional and out of character in my opinion, Rarity especially. And it leaks into how Gemstone is written. The story was just gunning for Rarity like when Applejack blew up on her for asking for relationship advice... and also the pony racism - like it's played for a joke but it makes it hard to sit through cause the canon characters are just morphed to fit whatever DF wanted the story to be, even if it goes against their character.
I never actually got the impression DF doesn't like Rainbow Dash as well. I mean there's quite a lot of her character in it, she even voices her. Weird.
as a certified rarity lover, she did NOT deserve all that, her and apple jack get married in my head and adopt a child, gemstone is still there but is happily coparented by fancy pants and rarity
Gotta commend your absolute genius comedic timing, talking about why how strange it was that the two fillies didn't get together as the Wikipedia header for queerbaiting slowly faded in on screen. A few good chuckles. The only exposure I had to either of this series was when an episode of DOD was randomly recommended to me, all the shipping stuff really isn't my thing so I never watched it at the time.
My biggest complaints - (In no particular order) - Applespike (the ship, not they're baby) - the "domesticating" of Discord and Fluttershy (and all the mane 6) - the forced gender roles/ stereotypes - the implications of how Fluttershy and Discord got together in this series - the Characterization of Rarity and Gemstone - Gemstone having an eating disorder - everyone treating Rarity and Gemstone like crap - the character of AppleJack being a jealous snob towards Rarity when she just tried to ask her FRIEND for advice - Redshoes should have just been cheese sandwich and the Tri pies. They were clearly an homage to characters like "Huey, duey and luey" but at least they were their own characters (In the reboot anyway) - Twilight getting a throw away line about getting dumped near the end felt cheap. We didn't even get to see her relationship - the way the ONE gay ship in the story is the ONLY ship (aside from the main characters) that is complicated and the two get very limited screentime where they're actually just happy together I'm sure there's more but those are the biggest ones off the top of my head I really do respect the work the artists and the va's put in I know projects like this take an insane amount of work, time and patience It's just some of the writing choices that Disneyfanatic made really bothered me and clearly I wasn't the only one
Good point outs in your comment, it's good that you didn't called the author a bad writer or whatever, you just don't like the way she wrote her stories and your comment is just and respectful, it's something I kinda would think with my opinions.

I liked Daughter of Discord more than it’s predecessor since Screwy and Mothball’s relationship is a lot healthier compared to Discord and Fluttershy’s. There’s no kidnapping or deals involved as they simply start off as two good friends who’s relationship naturally develops as they grow up. You can see/feel more trust and respect between them than with Discord and Fluttershy, who’s dynamic still comes off as fragile and unstable.

I love the effort you put into researching old MLP stuff. I was big into the fandom as a teen. Daughter of Discord is one of my favorite audio drama. I know it's not perfect but I'm more focused on Screwball's story. Not the weird Applespike stuff. Can't wait to see what else you talk about.
@{𝒯𝒽𝑒 𝒮𝒾𝓁𝓋𝑒𝓇 𝑀𝑜𝑜𝓃} Yeah. It’s canon in this universe. Basically in this universe, Applejack is a literal p*do / groomer who has a crush on and even dates Spike (who is canonically a kid)
it still irks me so bad that after EVERYTHING the other couples went through that were way more toxic and even abusive, they still kept most, if not all of the straight relationships together while aquafresh and that other girl were "just too diffewent :,(" like- THATS where they draw the line??? the ONLY queer relationship, hell even MENTION in the entire series is the one that they have a bad ending for. i call bullshit on that part to this day lmao
@@KaminoKatie From what I've read in the comments it seems that the author made a fanfic where Rainbow Dash has nightmares about gay ppl killing her for being ace so maybe (at the tine at least) it was mire than Screwball
It wasn't because they were too different. It was because the other girl said that they needed their significant other to be okay with their friends as well as her, especially those like Screwball who have been in the girl's life since they were little fillies. She can't be with someone that does not get along with her friends. She stated a need the other could not meet at that point in time and the other pony accepted it. They could still get together later on (and probably will) since they still like each other, but at the moment they agree that they are better off as friends. Not really a bad ending, but not really a happy one either. I do think they could have done this dynamic with a straight couple instead of the only queer one.
@@lilyofthevalley3059 Actually its because the author had internalized homophobia but go off I guess. And before you try to argue with me, the author literally said in the comments of the BOD video that they were homophobic while writing these and remained that way until they came out
@@AeonKnigh432 Wasn't going to argue with you, just didn't know about that fact. I just went with what happened at the end of episode 8 of daughter of discord, when they had that conversation about their relationship (or my memory about that conversation, since apparently Screwball was more like family rather than just a friend which I remembered upon re-watching that scene). Based on that I disagreed with the interpretation of them not getting (or staying) together being because they were too different and them not getting (or staying) together being a bad thing (since I firmly believe that it's important to communicate your needs and boundaries to your significant other and make it known if they are not being fulfilled so you can come up with a solution, I don't think breaking up but remaining friends is a bad ending). It's good to know they got over their homophobia and interesting to learn more about what went on behind the scenes. I still view that scene as a neutral ending (or an indefinite pause if you read into the whole being just friends until they are in a place for something more thing) to the relationship that wasn't because they were too different even if it wasn't intended like that. This is one of those scenarios where I'm really curious how old the author was when she started this whole saga. To a young teenager, Applejack x Spike probably seems innocuous, because at that age, the age gap doesn't really sink in. I say this because I've seen teenagers ship characters with huge age gaps and then years later feel turned off due to that age gap. (One fic I read even had the author post an update after a three year hiatus saying that she started writing that fic when she was a young teenager, but now that she was actually eighteen-ish like the younger character, she realized how weird the 10+ year age gap was.) But then again, a lot of bronies seemed to not fully realize that Spike was supposed to be a child, while the Main Six were fully functioning adults (well, maybe not "fully functioning").
I can relate, I loved Sparity as a kid but as an adult yeah no lmao. Then again for whatever reason most bronies think Spike is older then he actually is for some reason?
@@MILDMONSTER1234 I think it's because in the beginning of S1, the Mane 6 sounded like they were teens. Spike would still be a kid but the age difference might only be a couple of years. That, and Spike does a lot. His personality and behavior are def that of a kid but everything he can do kind of obfuscated it. But yeah I wasn't a huge Sparity shipper but I did think it was cute. Then I sat down and was like hm. He's a child and she's clearly an adult with her own business and all.
Holy shit they turned Chrysalis into Reverse Flash. Frankly, I’m fucking here for it. “HEY DISCORD REMEMBER WHEN CELESTIA CALLED YOU A FREAK? Trivia from BigApplePie, original BoD Discord voice: -Fluttershy telling Discord to sleep on the couch, was a joke between Mary Medley & I back in our BoD days. I came up with the line because believe it or not, I CAN SOUND LIKE FLUTTERSHY. But of course, it sounds better when Mary did it. I am happy the inside joke was included in the sequel. -Speaking of which, I originally wanted to audition for Fluttershy in DoD as a joke, but refrained, and glad I did. Plus what if were the best pick? Weeeiirrrd. -I reprised my Big Mac role in the final episode doing some eeeyups, nopes, and a scream. -I lent my vocals in the finale song. -I'm not sure if in the original fanfic, Chrysalis and Discord had a thing for each other, so this may be true or not. The idea MAY have been borrowed from my BoD blooper reel when I joked on occasion about Discord having a previous relationship with Celestia or Chrysalis. -DaWillstanator aka Thespio and I share the same number of episodes as Discord for a total of 10 each. Only criticize his own performance.
I have question for you, did your cousin DF really matured later? Cuz I feeling unease after I read a comment from MordecaiApo right here, where they called her a "notorious jerk", if you find this comment in the commentary.
Looking back at how discord was written he seems to be the stereotypical “my daughter can NEVER date a boy EVER” father figure it feels like the author didn’t really know how to write the conflict between discord and mothball and just end up making him yell at screwball the whole time. Kind of disturbing that I was watching this at 12 and didn’t see many red flags.
I had a nextgen comic when I was a teenager, and I mostly wrote it because I was working through issues I had with my mom and the pressures she put on me, so I wanted to explore how the CMC might approach raising THEIR kids and the concept of “destiny” given their own fixation on cutie marks. I made only the nextgen kids that were directly relevant, and didn’t even pick fathers for any of them. A lot of canon characters never had families. But when I launched the series, I got a TON of questions about WHO the fathers were???? What are [x character]’s kids like? Which kids do you ship with each other?? And as someone who was never into shipping it baffled me. Now I understand that most nextgen stuff was pretty shipping-driven… so the over-reliance on it in this doesn’t surprise me at all.
That's actually an interesting approach and inspiration for a nextgen story. But of course, those people care too much about shipping to actually think about the story that they're reading/watching.
Honestly I feel the same way Initially I started my MLP next gen as an excuse for shipping, but nowadays it's more an exploration of what the Mane 6 would be like as parents
Honestly? I wrote a nextgen fanfic for myself and didn't even make any of the mane 6 parents (except for Rarity and Applejack), I came up with new mane 6 that are not related to the previous mane 6 at all, and it was honestly really refreshing
I agree that the shipping and next gen children in this story got way out of hand. I also found myself not too happy with Discord's behavior, whether it's his excessive yelling in anger or his sudden lack of trust in Fluttershy when he gets tricked by the changelings. I mean, the two have been married for over a decade now so you'd think Discord would know better than to fall for a ploy like that since he knows his wife, and the fact that there was already a changeling sighting not that long ago. I also didn't like the scene where Discord is unsure if Screwball is actually his until she displays her chaotic powers. I can't help but think how shallow that was when he pointed out how the baby didn't resemble either of them and switching to fawning over his daughter once she shows she does have his powers. I mean, what would've happened if Screwball didn't have any powers? Sorry for the mini rant, but that scene just really bugs me.
ok, the queerbaiting pisses me off so much bc it's- it's *fanfiction!* there's no practical, cold blooded show-biz reason for them to queerbait the audience. they could've just let the one gay couple in an ocean of straights be together but nnnnope, can't have that apparently
I'm really happy you covered this one too because I only watched this series despite finding out there was one before it. It's a bit nostalgic but yeah I did not think about the Spike thing very much. And I totally get the crying thing, I felt the same way when I was little!
This is so weird because in BoD , when Applejack was talking to Rarity about Spike in the forest when they were helping Fluttershy to get to Discord, she showed no signs of not returning Spike's feelings because he was a dragon. She never at any point went ' ugh I would never be with a dragon', so the whole racist-ish thing seems very random. Also yeah. Discord is not a yeller. Dramatic, loud, chaotic, yes. But yelling, anger and outright physical violence were never really his thing. It was one of the reasons I found him to be so cool in mlp. It weirded me out that he got mad so often in BoD, and it's even more out of character here, and it just makes him unlikeable. His way of dealing with Mothball in the story, in particular, doesn't feel like his style at all.
I thought it was interesting that you never mentioned that fluttershy got a new voice actress, I remember when the casting call dropped the entirety of MLP VA youtube was scrambling to get the role
Oh yeah, I remember the original VA for Bride was not going to come back, then she did, but she dropped it because she felt bad and wanted to give others a chance. I think she was still in Daughter as Apple Bloom?
The way I physically couldn’t cope with the fact they didn’t make a pony and changling love story in the actual mlp show is crazy 😭😭 I wanted mothball and screwball to be real so badly
I knew about the whole 'theory' of screwball being Discord's daughter but I just thought it was like just that. Never knew about the fic or audio drama. ok few things: 1. this is a great video about a series i binged a lot as a kid and i will definitely check out your other videos 2. i have a raging hyperfixation on lego batman at the moment. when you had mentioned the background ponies and went “lego batjokes?!” i screamed so much that i cried and almost threw up from laughing. i had never realized they were in the bg of an episode (to be fair i haven’t seen the series in a few years) but thank you for pointing it out in (to me ) a very funny way. i was so loud that my whole family got so worried and thought i was dying.
I remember asking the author about Red Shoes and they just told me to go read the fanfic they'd written that explained it. But I don't rly care about Pinkie Pie x Cheese Sandwich and the fic was long so it felt like quite a demand of be able to understand everything in DoD. But they outright refused to just tell me. Kinda feels like how the MCU's becoming harder to get into bc u have to consume every movie and TV show to not get confused about stuff.
@@pepperimps01 yeah I was told about that by another fan back in the day. I'm just irritated that the author refused to tell me back in the day when directly asked.
For some reason as soon as I saw Chrysalis with her son during the intro, I immediately thought of Lion King 2. I can only assume that's because there are only, like, three next-geration Disney sequels and only one has a next-gen character who's related to the originals villain in some way and the main character's age, but my jaw still dropped when I realized that's the direction it was going in. Felt a little psychic lol
Fun fact, the Make A Wish kid is actually a friend of mine! They're currently a staff along with me in an online brony convention. I admittedly got really excited hearing that they were in this

Kinda off topic but when you mentioned the sound of crying bothers you I saw myself a little too much 😭 For years the sound of babies crying(or just crying in general) invoked one of two emotions in me: I either laugh uncomfortably or get rlly bothered by it. Literally thought I was the only one 💀
i'm sorry i lost it laughing when I heard the *squeak* and zoom in on my old art of mothball having crys's hoof over him. Help him he's being crushed! God its been years since I last looked at my old MLP art that was done back then. But this was an enjoyable video to watch and brought back good memories and valid points. I personally wasn't a huge fan of aj and spike. but I did greatly enjoy working on the scenes for the 2 episodes I did do back then (crys and discord seeing each other when defending their kids. and The rain of bricks on gold digger) while it was fun to work on the art i did do. I did and still sometimes d0 look back on it and see the bits where i was personally uncomfortable or not a fan of certain elements. Luckily i never had art assigned for scenes of parts i wasn't a huge fan/comfortable with. Still this analysis brings back good memories and was a great video to watch!
I watched DOD a while ago while I was still very much in my MLP phase. I still am in the MLP fandom but I can draw humans now. I remember making a fanfic where Screwball and one of my mary sue OC's were best friends. I don't remember much about the actual story.
DoD reminds me of the ending of Harry Potter where your life can ONLY be fulfilled if you get married and multiple kids! Asexuality? None existed. People Who just don't want to have kids? Those can't exist. It just annoys me especially when the series this is based off of is called FRIENDSHIP is magic and has next to no canon ships. The only ones we have I believe is TwilightxFlash, FluttershyxDiscord & RainbowxAJ

I remember watching this when I was younger and not getting into Screwball’s friend group that much. I love the idea of the Mane 6’s children being friends, but what put me off was the romances and just how pointless and dull they were. Like, they set up who had a crush on who, so I was just waiting for them to get together, not out of interest of investment, but because I wanted to be done with the painful “will they / won’t they” and cliche pinning tropes. It took a few years of getting past my internalized homophobia to realize that Aqua Fresh and Lightning Dash were the best developed couple, just because they waited awhile until getting there and also provided some actually interesting drama Also, I thought that Gemstone’s dieting was a result of living in Canterlot. Like, I was waiting for her to come out of her shell a bit and whatnot. I think they did this in the fanfic a bit towards the end, but I can’t be sure. Also #JusticeForGemstone or whatever
Okay, kind of a longshot that you'll ever see this, but I would absolutely LOVE a video like this about Turnabout Storm. I haven't seen that get talked about in ages but I feel like my brain puts it in the same category.
I was really into this series when I was in middle school and I don’t know if anyone said it yet, but there’s a spin-off about the younger kids (Pie triplets, Gemstone, and Prism) called CMC Next Gen and there’s a chapter about Red Shoes actually being Cheese Sandwich in hiding. Red Shoes was made to be a love interest for Pinkie as he didn’t exist yet, and DF wanted to add Cheese in later. She even had a Cheese voice for Red Shoes to support this when the audio came out. It’s been a long time but I think this is right.
I think dod is better than bod but about gemstone “quirk” an eating disorder is not quirky honestly what is was the writer‘s thinking when she thought it would be quirky hopefully she learns that it’s not “quirky” and is a serious issue
This probably gets pointed out at some point in the video but I find it odd that Screwball has the ability to tell when a changeling is disguised as someone else but Discord can't. When I started this video and we see this ability for the first time, I just assumed she inherited it from her dad (I barely know anything about MLP so forgive me if is canon that he can't tell regular characters from changelings disguising as them). It feels like a contrived reason to have Discord get mad at Fluttershy for supposedly cheating on him. And idk but wouldn't someone as powerful as Discord be able to share some of the same powers as his own kid? Does the genetics for Discord's species make it so that their powers are random and not inherited? Idk man
She can't tell when someone is an imposter unless they lie to her, that's why she didn't see the queen was pretending to be her brother, because the baby didn't talk.
Not gonna lie this discord is pretty accurate to the show both are immature man children who are basically plot devices that piss everyone off and only when things are at their worse does he force out an apology, just a child shouting for attention even if that attention is a beating
That’s why I’ve always found the flutter cord thing very troubling...like Fluttershy is his only “anchor’ to anything good and once she is gone? What would happen then? It’s very uncomfortable
@@blueestarr16 According to the Gen 5 comic (may not be canon so take with grains of salt), sorta nothing but sorta extreme too? He lives beneath the Ruins of Canterlot and would rather keep to himself and animals. (Spoilers I guess) he now has a misguided goal to remove all magic from the world again to create peace as he lived to witness all three types start hating the others for their magical abilities or lack thereof. How he actually handled her passing: he obviously misses her and seems to have taken up the mantle of animal caretaker. So he mellowed out, but is still prone to pushing “you’re a showy, arrogant prick.” I guess I shouldn’t be too surprised since he was apathetic to the world being at stake unless Fluttershy’s involved. Surprisingly he also misses rest of the six so maybe he’d value their opinions, or likely not. I don’t know as his writing got clunkier over the seasons imo. And that’s kinda my problem with him. I actually really like Discord and even when he betrayed them in S4 I praised the writers’ decision since it seemingly hammered home the message to him that he needs to do better for the connections he already had. His redemption had a massive stumble and I liked that. But his character was weakest when it didn’t directly involve Fluttershy afterwards. The Gala episode and the one where he tries to be normal for her were lessons he needed to learn to be a better person, but we never see him trying to apply those lessons anywhere or learn from besides her. It’s like there’s a factory reset on him for half the episodes he’s in. The closest we got was that time he suddenly became buddies with everyone except Twilight, and I abhorred that because it skipped over potentially important character growth moments for him to have. Like besides two bros and a slime creature, making friends with characters with strong ideals to keep him “anchored”. And don’t even get me started on that bs he pulled in the Final Season. I realize now though I like Discord, it’s mostly because of the fanworks that explore him further and his relationship with Fluttershy, romantic or platonic (not BoD lol). This also came out way longer than I thought :I
Honestly I first read this fic when it first came out years ago (So back then I didn't really think much of the problematic Applespike shipping since I was still a teen myself at the time) The big thing that always irked me about the story was how Discord did such a 180 turn when he thought Fluttershy was cheating on him, even though he literally saw a changeling the night before, knows how they are, and yet STILL doesn't even slightly question what he saw?? God and the fact that he didn't even let Fluttershy explain herself and just up and went to start causing more chaos just brings a bad implication that it's supposed to be Fluttershy's sole responsibility to keep him controlled... It just kinda makes the whole character development that Discord supposedly went through with making friends with everyone else and not just Fluttershy and the fact the he'd turn on them all so quickly for a misunderstanding...
The hate for rarity reminds me of an author in The Outsiders fandom. I would always read their stuff wondering where the character Johnny was, just read the a/n of one of their fan fics that literally just said “people have been asking where Johnny is in my fics. I don’t like Johnny, so I don’t write about him.” Like DANG
I watched your BOD video a few days ago and was especially looking forward to you covering DOD because I actually did some art for this series as a teenager. I had kinda forgotten that I did until I saw your BOD video pop up in my recommendations. I agree with all of your critiques-- especially the AppleSpike thing and Discord's very problematic actions. It's very surreal looking back on this project all of these years later as an adult who knows better now. I do remember really enjoying making art for this project, even if looking at all my old art makes me cringe now lol. Also BTW I've been binging your channel for most of this week- you're so funny and I regularly get into laughing fits when I watch your videos! I appreciate your kindhearted nature and I can't wait to see more!
reminder that while he doesn't appear in the drama, in the fanfic it shows that dinky's dad is doctor whooves. i don't know why he didn't appear in the drama but in the fanfic it gives a reason he's not exactly in dinky's life, fighting daleks (I'm not making this up it literally name drops daleks) also mothball's dad was a pony
Actually in the audio drama, Derpy states in the very beginning what happened to him. When Rarity asked her what happened to him while she was looking at her baby in the hospital, she said that "One of his experiments went wrong and he got sucked into a time vortex." This was a throwaway line and it's treated like a joke with her saying immediately after "Oh well. That's the way the muffin crumbles sometimes." As far as I can tell (since I haven't watched the whole thing myself), we never see him throughout the entire thing and his absence was just hand-waved in a throwaway gag.
bruh finally my girl gemstone getting the recognition she deserves. even when I first saw the fanfic when I was like 10 I’ve always liked gemstone and her design. justice for her.
wow, hit the nail on the head again! i remember enjoying dod much more than bod specifically because of how enjoyable as a protagonist screwball was and how she finally gave us a breather from the absolute nightmare that was fluttershy and discords relationship. her relationship with mothball, despite incredibly cliche, is still very cute and effective, and you are right, those twists were much more fun and enjoyable than most of what bod had to offer. maybe it helps i also really like tlk2 as a kid, so a fanfic loosely based on it would probably also appeal to me. i do agree with all the same criticisms though, aj/spike is still as creepy as ever, all the other m6 with their own future lives seem so weird and forced in or just hollow, and the fact they had ONE wlw ship teased that didnt even fully come to its happy conclusion unlike the others felt like a slap in the face. again, wow, i just am glad that the author knows better now because yeesh, these were rough.
I’m a HUGE mothball fan so maybe I’m biased, but I really would have liked some of the energy that was put towards the side ships and filler to be put towards developing his character more. I mean, for a love interest, and supposedly secondary protagonist, he only has about an hour and fourty five minutes of screen time, out of the five hour audio drama (calculated by BeizerBallad on FiMfiction). Obviously the time skip and the fact that mothball couldn’t get out to see screwball doesn’t help this, but a little more development with him would have been great. There’s a scene In the fic which explains how he got Zany back from the Changelings, which got replaced with him explaining it quickly in the audio drama, but I feel like that would have been nice to see. Some more development on his and chrysalis’s relationship would have been cool too. Sure, there’s a decent amount of scenes with him, but it would still have been neat to actually see him a bit more.
23:45 Honestly I've never felt more like a poorly edited Shunks on a chair while rewatching this series. It's just so good and bad at the same time lol. Like people can totally have their rightfully annoyed gripes on this series, I've certainly got my own, but watching this is just such a guilty pleasure.
This one actually hurts more than its predecessor solely because of the CONSTANT shipping nonsense, involving minors & all of it obnoxiously straight, and the weird emphasis on having truckloads of children. There's just too much there that sets my teeth on edge. You're stronger than me for enduring this.
Shipping back in the 2010s was an easy tool to get ocs out quickly....case in point and i cant believe im referencing this in 2022....Balto and Lion king OCs
“Obnoxiously straight” is an odd thing to say. Having straight pairings be central to a series is in no way obnoxious, as there are significantly more straight people in the world than any other type of orientation. And it isn’t even like there isn’t a gay ship in this work, because there is. It just doesn’t get much payoff because it centers around side characters who are children. Secondly, it makes sense for the character to marry and have children. That’s literally what Next Gen stories do. Would you care about some random OC pony with unnamed parents in a Fanfiction? No, which is why authors instead have main characters from canon have children. It’s all to be more appealing to the show’s fans. Now, that’s not to say that Daughter of Discord doesn’t have some annoying tropes and writing themes. But I feel like the hate that people are piling onto it is a bit much. Characters in fiction tend to end up married with children because it’s an easy payoff. We get to see the character leading a happy and peaceful life and passing the torch on to the next generation. Daughter of Discord legit centers around that concept. It’s weird to me that people find that aspect of it controversial.
I just love that combination of words, "obnoxiously straight." It stuck with me ever since I read your comment. People have went on and on about a particular franchise that I won't mention the name of because it's Voldemort at this point (along with other reasons, trust me, don't ask me the name), being obnoxious in terms of being LGBT with its cast and relationships (I personally don't have a problem with it and don't see it that way), but _this_ story is the exact opposite (and this is coming from someone who's a straight male).
I honestly thought I was the only one who thought Discord was off in terms of personality. As you pointed out, we’ve only seen him get angry once or twice in the canon show (one of the times being when he found out that Fluttershy was kidnapped by the changelings) It’s especially off when Discord gets riled off upon hearing that Screwball has a crush without even knowing that said crush is a changeling, again, as you pointed out.

Very infuriating.
exactly!! honestly i was really frustrated with hopper's character in s3. he was a lot more tolerable in season 4, though.
LITERALLY, I HATED hopper in season 3, took all the enjoyable parts of him out of the story😭😭😭
Idk why they had to do that to hopper but it was the 80s so i guess it's realistic

@@cookiecat3324 Exactly. Why not just, I dunno… not write Marinette as a stalker?
*Mind Blown*
The Red Shoes being Cheese Sandwich thing was kinda interesting actually. Red Shoes was originally an OC I think cuz the author couldn't think of anyone to ship Pinkie with.
The first one bit of a yikes considering that Spikes a minor, but I'm guessing the author might of figured that out later on
If I remember correctly too, wasn’t the reason Spike and AJ didn’t have a bio baby until way later was bc Celestia forbade them from ever having a bio kid due to being different species??
The way Rarity is characterized is disappointing. Poor Gemstone.

ngl i hope SILOD is a thing i dont want this series to end
Some people think fluttercord is canon at the end but thats all bias headcanon really. Still interesting how appledash ended up being canon tho
You’re so right actually
Flutters and Discord ended up together too lol
I remembered liking BOD, but looking back on it, it feels insulting to the healthy relationship Fluttershy and Discord share canonically.
True. Even if people are divided on shipping it, Fluttershy and Discord’s bond in the show is much better. He’s more calm, witty and not too over the top with his mischief aside from having his chaos be comedic. “How did Rarity kill your grandma?”
Odd, i always interpreted as either her not knowing or spike just wanting to help her constantly

My biggest complaints -
(In no particular order)
- Applespike (the ship, not they're baby)
- the "domesticating" of Discord and Fluttershy (and all the mane 6)
- the forced gender roles/ stereotypes
- the implications of how Fluttershy and Discord got together in this series
- the Characterization of Rarity and Gemstone
- Gemstone having an eating disorder
- everyone treating Rarity and Gemstone like crap
- the character of AppleJack being a jealous snob towards Rarity when she just tried to ask her FRIEND for advice
- Redshoes should have just been cheese sandwich and the Tri pies. They were clearly an homage to characters like "Huey, duey and luey" but at least they were their own characters
(In the reboot anyway)
- Twilight getting a throw away line about getting dumped near the end felt cheap. We didn't even get to see her relationship
- the way the ONE gay ship in the story is the ONLY ship (aside from the main characters) that is complicated and the two get very limited screentime where they're actually just happy together

You can see/feel more trust and respect between them than with Discord and Fluttershy, who’s dynamic still comes off as fragile and unstable.

like- THATS where they draw the line??? the ONLY queer relationship, hell even MENTION in the entire series is the one that they have a bad ending for. i call bullshit on that part to this day lmao
The only reason why Lighting and Aquafresh didn't get together is because she has a prejudice against Screwball

(One fic I read even had the author post an update after a three year hiatus saying that she started writing that fic when she was a young teenager, but now that she was actually eighteen-ish like the younger character, she realized how weird the 10+ year age gap was.)
But then again, a lot of bronies seemed to not fully realize that Spike was supposed to be a child, while the Main Six were fully functioning adults (well, maybe not "fully functioning").
Pretty sure the author wa 18 when writing the first one so ye teenager

Trivia from BigApplePie, original BoD Discord voice:
-Fluttershy telling Discord to sleep on the couch, was a joke between Mary Medley & I back in our BoD days.
Me: Bod 1-9 + April Fools BoD episode. Thespio: BoD 10, DoD 1-8 + April fools DoD episode.
-Thespio is a great replacement, and a great dude, and I don't want anyone to hate him simply for the reason that he's not me. Only criticize his own performance.

One of the few people who actually sees the bigger picture when it comes to next gen stories
Honestly I feel the same way
Initially I started my MLP next gen as an excuse for shipping, but nowadays it's more an exploration of what the Mane 6 would be like as parents
Honestly? I wrote a nextgen fanfic for myself and didn't even make any of the mane 6 parents (except for Rarity and Applejack), I came up with new mane 6 that are not related to the previous mane 6 at all, and it was honestly really refreshing
That's a pretty interesting and original take on a gen story story

Yeah 100%
Hating my favorite pony AND ruining her made up daughter's life,, that's rough.

Luckily i never had art assigned for scenes of parts i wasn't a huge fan/comfortable with. Still this analysis brings back good memories and was a great video to watch!
Ooh could you timestamp your old art lol?

Back then it was hard to tell which was going to canon to be fair. Although Appledash beating out other popular ships like rarijack is funny

So that's why Screwball looks the way she does. When I fist saw her I was like "wtf, she looks nothing like Fluttershy or Discord?"
Chaotic genetics. Though Fluttershy did say Screwball shared a race and purple coat from one of Fluttershy's parents or grandparents.
@@ApricityGlow Ikr? If I wanna make a OC child of a shipp, I'd make the OC child has some traits of their parents but with their own traits that came from both parents' families or has just their own.
It took a few years of getting past my internalized homophobia to realize that Aqua Fresh and Lightning Dash were the best developed couple, just because they waited awhile until getting there and also provided some actually interesting drama
Also, I thought that Gemstone’s dieting was a result of living in Canterlot. Like, I was waiting for her to come out of her shell a bit and whatnot. I think they did this in the fanfic a bit towards the end, but I can’t be sure.

Okay, kind of a longshot that you'll ever see this, but I would absolutely LOVE a video like this about Turnabout Storm. I haven't seen that get talked about in ages but I feel like my brain puts it in the same category.
Turnabout storm is big and well known enough that it's not off the table for me to do a video on
I actually started off with Daughter of Discord. And that was my SHIT as a kid.

It’s been a long time but I think this is right.
im honestly suprised that there isnt a princess trixie sparkle retrospective yet, that was a big part of my childhood.

Idk man
To be fair, she only realized mothball was a changeling because she knew he was lying, but it is pretty odd that discord never picked up on any of it
She can't tell when someone is an imposter unless they lie to her, that's why she didn't see the queen was pretending to be her brother, because the baby didn't talk.

I'm just glad with all the literal babymaking going on here no one has made the pun "Dicks-cord" yet
I remember being so hyped for the last episode to be released, and then Chrysalis's motive made me cackle with laughter 🤣

i watched this in middle school, and although a lot of the episodes are now a blur, i definitely missed a lot of the... negatives
reminder that while he doesn't appear in the drama, in the fanfic it shows that dinky's dad is doctor whooves. i don't know why he didn't appear in the drama but in the fanfic it gives a reason he's not exactly in dinky's life, fighting daleks (I'm not making this up it literally name drops daleks) also mothball's dad was a pony

Samee man. I just end up skipping the bad parts
This one actually hurts more than its predecessor solely because of the CONSTANT shipping nonsense, involving minors & all of it obnoxiously straight, and the weird emphasis on having truckloads of children. There's just too much there that sets my teeth on edge. You're stronger than me for enduring this.
Shipping back in the 2010s was an easy tool to get ocs out quickly....case in point and i cant believe im referencing this in 2022....Balto and Lion king OCs
so you’d prefer minors be shipped but in an obnoxiously gay way? gross
As you pointed out, we’ve only seen him get angry once or twice in the canon show (one of the times being when he found out that Fluttershy was kidnapped by the changelings)
It’s especially off when Discord gets riled off upon hearing that Screwball has a crush without even knowing that said crush is a changeling, again, as you pointed out.
