  • It's been three months since we first looked at the RANE FOUR, the company's controversial new four-deck controller for Serato DJ Pro. Featuring static, not spinning platters, the FOUR also has a suite of hardware FX and is the first device built to take advantage of Serato's Stems technology. Mojaxx gives it a long-term review on this episode of "Beatsource Tech."

    The hype behind this controller is insane. Reminds me of when the DDJ SX/ SZ first came out…those controllers were truly groundbreaking for their time. This takes that winning formula and pumps it up to the next level with stems. Pioneer should be VERY worried because I see this becoming the new industry standard.

    Just received mine today. I started djing in the early 90s on turntables. I had to evolve from cd N-88 numark, denon 5000, denon 9000,pioneer sx2, pioneer sz2 which I love. As a mobile dj I was done carrying records, cd books. The controller has being a god sent ease of use and time savings. This controller just takes my mixing to another level when the event calls for it sweet 16 etc. Having the professional quality for regular events is a no brainer. As for as platters are concern I'm a house dj so the need to scratch won't be as important. The 8 inch jog wheels shall be plenty shouldi have to. Great review as always Mo. Over 30 years of this craft and I couldn't be more excited to get to practice on this new device from Rane.

    Excellent review Mojaxx! The Rane is a beautiful piece of kit, no doubt. I started on old school belt driven turntables before moving to Technics 1200s. I've mixed on 12s for many years before shutting down as sometimes life gets in the way.
    When I returned I went the controller route. Started on a DDJ400 and now use a DDJ 800 and lovin' my XDJ RX3. Coming from turntables it took a minute to get used to static jogs but once I did it was no problem. I've spun on a Rane One and love the moving platters but at the end of the day, it seems like static jogs are the way to go, now, at least for me.

    I started on turn tables in the 80's. I've used both since early 2k and am comfortable with either. I actually got the Rain Four for the stems control, and being 51 yrs old, I like the light weight of it compared to the Rane One or Rev7. Now if they would get us a good carrying case for monster sized controller.

    Great review Mojaxx love how you used those FX. Can’t wait to get my hands on the Rane Four. I started with Numark ndx400. Now I have the Denon dj sc5000 and sc5000M for home use. When I do gigs I use the Rane One. I like both but when I like to be more creative or using lots of FX I prefer jog wheels and for scratching motorized platters.

    Great review! I really hope I will like these Jogwheels. My first was CDJ-1000mk2 and I love the grip of them. I rock the LC6000 now and it’s far better than the SC5000 but I love the grip of the CDJ’s. I really hope InMusic releases stickers or replace platters with better rubber grip surface for the Jogwheels. RANE Four is my new controller. Can’t wait to start playing with it.🎶

    Great review Mojaxx as always. I had turntables on and off from about 85 until 2007 I have went on to Denon 3700s and now SC6000m. I think spinning platters just feel more fun and as somebody who is 55 years old and only use them at home these days, fun is the only thing that matters. Bought the 6000ms after your review and same with Xone 96. Always fancied an Allen & Heath mixer. Very happy with everything but still miss the effects after using time code in Traktor with my 3700s and an X1.

    I started djing with turntables and moved on to controllers and even though I currently own a controller with static platters I’m waiting for RANE to come out with RANE one version 2 or a RANE 4 with moving platters. Until then I may consider buying this unit cause for the price and features is fantastic.

    Great video thanks for doing such a great job putting this together. The effects section alone is a huge step forward - I had the Rane 70 mixer and ended up selling it in part because I didn’t really like the effects (or filters for that matter) but this looks excellent.
    I started on CDJ 1000s, moved to vinyl (so I could be a ‘real DJ’ lol), and then started using controllers and well. Have gone through so many controllers since then, and as for platters, I prefer spinning platters or mechanical platters over capacitive ones. The reason I say that is that on both pioneer and denon controllers the capacitive platters would stop working randomly (and then work again). This happened on four controllers I had over the years and when searching on UA-cam it seemed to be fairly common. I’m currently using a ddj-srt1000 because I wanted the mechanical platters (they work perfectly). As for the feel of the platters while DJing, I don’t have too much of a preference since (when they are working) all are pretty responsive.

  • @dannyvalentino328
    @dannyvalentino328 Рік тому +4

    I think another reason for the static platters is cost. Moving jog wheels cost more to make as they have moving parts and a good, strong motor to keep the wheels running consistently and quickly from zero to the set bpm speed. If Rane wanted to keep costs down, then it was a no brainer to use static jog wheels and especially as it would make this controller lighter and many Dj's are happy using static jog wheels. Judging by the very reasonably price of this controller, I'd say Rane knew what it was doing when it ditched the spinning platters on this particular controller.

    Yesss Much Needed Mojaxxx take on the Rane 4! Stems is the future & now our Present with the Rane 4 🙌🏼 stems split with individual faders is next level! That's why I had to order one! Can't wait to be able to remap my SRT 1000 while pioneer takes their time figuring out their life.. Rev 7, S11 & SRT needs to have a Stems 4ch, paddle fx (multiple channels at the same time), Stems split, dedicated Stems buttons, mechanic srt or 3000 (cdj) jogs. 32 pads(8x8x8x8) w/ pad mode screens. Locking IE, 15lbs, controller baby! 🙏🏼🤞🏼🙌🏼

I think Rane is a no brainer because of it's innovative features and the overall beautiful look. The ddj100srt is a couple of years old whereas the Rane 4 is fresh out the kitchen. Thank Mojaxx for the review. Keep up the good work.

    In my reaction to your initial impressions video, I was worried about the possible busy and intricate workflow of this device. Part of that still stands I must say, especially the last part with scratching terms. But I must admit I'm very impressed by the pad LEDs and stems possibilities, that's golden.
    As for platters, switching from analog beatmatching on the spinning wheels of the SL 1200 MK2 to digital beatmatching on controller platters was something I had to get used to. For digital beatmatching, I actually prefer using pitchbend buttons now over pitch fader and platter adjustments. But this has more to do with digital vs analog beatmatching, not so much platters or spinning wheels IMO.

    I think this is the new standard for Mobile, Corporate, Wedding DJs.
    Pioneer really have a lot of catch up on with stems.
    Split stems just opens up huge potential for elevating private events. One you add in the ability to map the pad buttons to Soundswitch or Daslight functions, it really does take it to another level of 'on the fly' control.
    The workflow potential on the Rane Four is outstanding.

    Shit, what this setup can do creatively, it is so much more than a pioneer 4 deck cdj & djm rig.

    Amazing review. As usual. Just copped the Rane Four! Its next level and what i've been waiting for. I've been professionally DJ-ing since '88. Owned a record store from '98-04. Have been DJ-ing in the clubs 4 nights out of the week, every week, for 20+ years. Spinning platters on 12s and records have been my life, although I've never used spinning platters on controllers. I don't really like them tbh. My brain doesn't associate spinning platters with controllers and I prefer it that way. I still buy 12"s and 45s to this day and use the S9 with my decks. Another reason why I like capacitive jog wheels. It feels like decks and vinyl. The mechanical touch is very odd for me. Owned the SX, SX2, SX3, SZ (fav controller) the size of the SZ felt propa! Yes its massive, but it felt less "toy-ish" built like a tank, used and abused the crap out of it. Still rockin it, until the Rane Four came out. Which is what I was waiting for. Something a bit smaller than the SZ and bigger than the SRT1000. My only question/confusion was, why did they continue to use USB-B? and not switch to USB-C! paired with supplying USB-B to USB-A cables in the box. If you're using this controller, your laptop most likely has USB-C. At least supply a new gen USB-B to USB-C cables in the box. Seems very antiquated that they did all of this amazing new technology, resource hungry, and skipped that part.

    I started with a Numark Mixtrack Pro 1, then I got a DDJ SB3, which I returned for a SX2 that was on offer for a ridiculously low price. When I got the SX2, my brother gave me two turntables that I fell in love with. From there I ended up getting a mixer, and now my main setup is two turntables and a S11 mixer. I just got a Numark Mixstream Pro Go, and its ok to mix on. I wish the crossfader had a tighter cut , but its serviceable. Its especially good because you literally can take it anywhere and start Djing. Cord free! The speakers on it sound surprisingly good and get very loud. I'm happy with it, but my bread and butter is two turntables and a mixer for sure!

    I started on static platters and moved into spinning platters with the R-One. Scratching is big in my sets, so spinning platters makes more sense for me. I’m sure I could tear it up with this R4, but I’d rather try before I buy.
    The mixer section looks phenomenal btw, everything does…I hope they adapt some of this to a R-One mk2 or a Rane Two.

    Still have Turntables but copped a Vestax VCi 300 for travel. Upgraded that to Roland 505 and finally the Rane One. Static jogs are cool and super smooth for mixing, but nothing beats moving platters for Hip-Hop style Open Format DJng. Would definitely upgrade to the next Rane controller with moving platters, but honestly you can do ALOT with the One and prepping your edits ahead of time.

  • @HeavyC78
    @HeavyC78 Рік тому +1

    I started on turntables and actually went backwards to using controllers. I think more for mobility. I never had the cash to have more toys than one main piece of gear. I've been all over trying different patters on controllers. Vestax 380, 300. Numark NS6, NI Kontrol S4,Roland DJ505, Denon HS5500. Even tried the Numark CDX. Having a turntable type feel is always what I wanted in a controller. Closest to achieve that for me is my current Rane One. But with the additional stems possibilities on the Rane Four. I might have to give up the motorized platters!

  • @carlwhite7447

    I like most of what I see. Serperate jump controls is cool (hate the pad way of doing it) love the stem split, although I would have liked the option to pick what goes on which deck. I split stems across multiple decks on my SZ when I need to fade out the melody. There is no smooth way to remove just this element on a busy track. BUT.... I dont see any FLIP controls or pad mode. This could well be the deal breaker for me as I use Flip a huge amount. I am looking for that next level device to temp me away from my aging SZ, but I would definitely need to demo this first I think.

    Great review ... Started with turntables and still on them .... at a crossroads though .. currently on 1200 & Rane 62 set-up but looking to upgrade the 62 due to no stems support (its hard to go back to DJin without it after playing on a Rane one and Rev7 recently). either staying on turntables and getting a Rane 70 , or switching to a spinning platter contoller .. only used static platters a few times and it just feels odd (as mainly play Hip Hop). so only real options are rane one or Rev 7... and as much as I'm a Rane fan boy I prefered the Rev 7 🥺 felt the platters, pitch faders/pad layout/headphone cue locations felt more natural to me. I dont do as may gigs as I used to so swaying between £1100 for the Rane 70 or £1800 for the Rev7

    As always insightful review. Been waiting for this.
    I started on Gemini and numark belt drive turntables. Then ended up on vestal pd3s as I found technics to be weaker torque. Loved the pd3s and only changed them to reloop 7000 recently. First platter was Denon dnhs5500 then moved to dns3700 whilst adding numark nv2 then to mcx8000 until that got stolen after a gig. Now currently rock mixars primo for me and my son to have fun, mc7000 for gigs, and reloop 7000 with Rane64. I'm pissed that Rane 64 is no longer supported by serato so need to find replacement for that as want to add lc5000 to that and maybe the mc7000 might go for the Rane 4

      How do you like the reloop 7000 turntables? I'm debating adding one into my home setup...
      I also have the MC7000 and love it, but the built in FX ,stems, bigger jogs with screens, pad OLED screens, and a few other bits, have me looking at this Rane Four... have been looking at the Rev7 as well... I have some time to decide while I save. The motorized jogs, smooth echo, and the instant scratch feature as well as other uses of those buttons are a few reasons I am still looking at the Rev7....
      Maybe someday both...lol
      Anyhow, let me know if you get a Four, and how u like that RP7000...

    The ability to edit beatgrid would be great I would recommend holding shift and using the beat jump knob and buttons is Serato will add that to a firmware update. Also lcd screen options needs to be improved like srt or rev7 and rane performer

    I started with 2 tech 1200 and a ecler hak mixer, i have later on upgraded the mixer to pioneer 850 and a Rane72, but I never liked the Rane72 so i sold it. The effect section was not user friendly at all and having gotten use to the Pioneer mixers it was hell trying to mix with it. This is probably the controller i want the most being a Serato DJ, but I'm a bit unsure of the FX section and their sound, kinda use to Pioneers sound FX by now. Might wait to see if the FLX 10 which is rumored might challenge this?

    I only had 1200's before I got a controller after selling my turntables. IMHO there some cultural differences. Since Europe in general is more four on the floor. Not big on scratching in general so static is fine for them. That four on the floor culture mainly exist in Chicago, Detroit and New York. In California, if you spin rap/hip hop you still have turntables. A few have controllers, Rane One or Rane 12, occasionally Denon media players like the 5000 and 6000. Electronica, they love Pioneer CDJs and it also a status symbol for them and pretenders who can afford them but aren't good at all at being DJ's.
    I waited for something like the Rane One and Pioneer Rev 7.
    The price is off putting and aren't very mobile friendly even if I have moved away from wedding and all that nonsense that pays well but static in terms of what can be played with upwards of four generations at an event, I'll pass.
    At $1700 I could consider the Four over the One. But the Rev 7 is around the same price.
    I'll likely keep the budget around $1000 for a controller.
    I've been DJ'ing since 1986

    Do you think the other 16 FX might get ignored, once you've saved your 6 favorites on the buttons? I feel like switching an effect mid-session is still a little cumbersome, what has your experience been?
    Would be nice if they could add banks, maybe a shift+click of the FX Assign buttons or something to give you 4 banks of FX.
    Anyways great review @mojaxx!

      That’s a fair point, although are many DJs really using more than 6 FX in any given set? I certainly don’t, probably 4 at most, to be honest, even with all of the ones on here at my disposal.

    @dude in the video, (yes you) would you rather a dj controller, rane 4 for example and a computer or would you rather a mixer and a computer and 2 digi decks such as 2 denon 5000`s?
    do they work the same, as in, is there lag? the computer and the digi decks and mixer all connect to each other and you can send songs to each deck?
    hopefully my questions are understandable

    With all the screens on the controller rane could be low key supporting Denons vision of standalone only given if you dont need to look at your laptop or at least your need to look at it reduces what is the need if rane slapped a screen on the rane 4 update it would be much of a stretch

    started dj ing on 1200 since the 80s mostly played Reggae and Soca partner would DJ House and hip Hop RnB. I went to CDs using Denon 5000s motorize platter, however since belt driven didn't last long. 2006 went the Serato route with the Denon 5000s with CD control with Scratch Live. Went to Numark v7 loved them and have them to this day. Later got a hold of Numark ns6 so using jog wheels. My experience is that spinning platters from turntable or even rane 12 harder to control pitch of platter when djing with older type tracks Funk, Dance Classics(i dont beat grid). However have better control blending old classics with jog wheels either with the side of the jog wheel or the pitch bend buttons where you can ride the pitch moving up or down blending with old classics. So moving platters is for nostalgic feel but good control blends with jog wheels. Really like the Rane 4 (having fun with stems now) thinking of getting rid of my Denon Prime 4 for it as I bought the Denon Prime 4 for stand alone but I never use it as stand alone, it is always connected to Serato Dj Pro.

    The controller is impressive. I'd like to see if Pioneer is going to make something to compete with it if they do something within the Rev line of products I think it could be something really awesome. On the flip side if they do something within the flx line of products I most likely wouldn't be interested.

    • @soiceyboy33
      @soiceyboy33 Рік тому

      That would be nice to see, but I’m worried about cost. The Rev7 is already on the expensive side at $1999. Making it four channel and adding all these new features would definitely push it past $2000 and at that price point, they’ll lose a lot of potential customers.
      Rane was smart to price the Four at $1699 because they’re going to get a lot more sales/ attention/ adoption. I’m even thinking they’ll increase the price a bit since it sold out so quickly. Just got mine today!

    • @tovyaweissberg47
      @tovyaweissberg47 Рік тому

      @soiceyboy33 if it was a rev line controller with mechanical jogs maybe that would make it premium without the high cost of motorized platters. There's already images of a flx10 floating around though so a 4 channel stem inspired rev controller is most likely not gonna happen

    I started on turntables in 93 never did the cdj thing then bought a controller around 10 years ago an original sx. I did feel a little disembodied from the music using jogs rather than platters. So when it came to upgrade time I bought an ns73, best of both or so I thought. However in practice trying to pitch bend using these platters was difficult to say the least as there was always a compromise on platter feel, really tight for pitch bending or a bit slacker for a half decent spin back etc. Long story short I found myself using the pitch bend buttons rather than the platters which for me kinda defeated the object of the platters in the first place. Next upgrade was a ddj 1000 on rb. I found myself much more at home on this much more immersed in the music in general. Much more like playing on my original turntables. Just my weird little journey hope it kinda makes sense. Imo unless you are heavily into scratching i would chose statics over motorised everytime.

    Is there a way you can adjust the jog wheel on the RANE FOUR. I just got mine yesterday and I feel like the the Vinyl is really soft and I have to a lot pressure on it to scratch. I'm contemplating whether I should keep my 1000SRT to the RANE. The RANE has great sound, but the stems sound just like on the SRT. The jog wheel the only thing on the RANE that's making it hard for me to decide which one to keep.

    So do the hardware effects and the mixer work without a computer? I assume they do. I just ordered the rane one to try out and it has just dawned on me that the lack of hardware effects will be a big deal breaker as I plan to do a lot of stuff using delays & loopers not just with decks but also external gear. Ideally the controller’s mixer will integrate everything as this is how I have been working with the 68/64 for the past decade & I really want something that continues from where those devices left off. I really wish I could have some input into the development of a future product that is aimed more at the producer/dj (eg. Aux sends/inserts/pans/direct outs… I’m in a strange realm that is somewhere between the turntablist / producer and club dj.
    I find there to be too many similar products while a lot of older features continue to disappear in favour of quirky effects nobody will really use (loopers & echoes > phasers and flangers)
