Wonder Boy III The Dragon's Trap is one of the best games in music, graphics, mechanics in SMS and surpass any other 8 bit game of other consoles.. a classic
My Top 25 List: 1. Phantasy Star 2. Wonder-Boy 3 - The Dragon's Trap 3. Alex Kidd in Miracle World 4. Sonic The Hedgehog 5. Golden Axe Warrior 6. Wonderboy 7. Bubble Bobble 8. Fantasy Zone 9. Space Harrier 10. Golvellius 11. R-Type 12. Altered Beast 13. Double Dragon 14. Shinobi 15. Ninja Gaiden 16. Mickey Mouse - Castle of Illusion 17. Choplifter 18. Quartet 19. Ghouls 'n Ghosts 20. Power Strike II 21. Wonder-Boy 2 - Wonder Boy in Monster Land 22. Fantasy Zone 2 23. After Burner 24. Rambo II 25. Rampage
Thank you. I don't get how any sane person can put Sonic 1 below the second one on MS. Agree with Wonder-Boy 3 - The Dragon's Trap too, which deserves a place at the top spot. This video is a joke.
Are you crazy?? Where are Alex Kidd in Shinobi World, Masters of Combat, Black Belt, Vigilante, Asterix, Battlemaniacs, Land of Illusion, Double Dragon, Forgotten Worlds, Great Volleyball, KEISEIDEN, Luck Dime Caper, Golvellius, Olympic Gold, Rampage, Ayrton Senna Super Monaco GP 2, Tecmo World Cup, Moonwalker, etc??? Master of Darkness and Ninja Gaiden are top 10 for sure...
The trouble with Top 50 lists is.... There's only 50 spaces to squeeze games in. The other trouble is, everyone has different choices. This list is mine, and although I like some of your selection (and some of them were placed in the Honorable Mentions section), I stand by my top 50, as they are the games I've enjoyed the most.
+Juganawt so your video should be called "My top 50..." since it's your opinion, with a high deviation from the common opinion... for example After Burner is considered a horrible adaptation of the game as Master of Daskness is in any top 10 in any Master System list. Same thing comparing MK against Masters of Combat... also putting SoR 2 above Phantasy Star (this one considered the best Master System game ever) or games like Mission Impossible far from others like Keiseiden, it's hard to understand the criteria...
+Game Moments Vault it's pretty clear in my criteria that it's my list and your opinion may vary, as well as in the description of the video. Common opinion aren't necessarily right - look at how popular Call of Duty is - it doesn't mean it's the best Game out there - it's not even the best shooter game. People tend to get in collective minds about games, especially retro ones. Some are deemed socially acceptable to deride - even if they weren't bad games (most of the "bottom 10 games" lists I see are filled with below average games but nowhere close to being the worst games released), and some were deemed socially acceptable to praise, even if the games weren't that great to begin with. At the end of the day, everyone has different tastes, and would create different lists of their favorite games. I'm sure if you asked 10 different people for their top 50's, you'd get 10 different lists. This one's mine and I stand by it.
+Juganawt got it. You are right.... in my country the Master System was very popular and also many of those games I mentioned. Sorry for the "are you crazy?" :-(

The real top five: 1. Phantasy Star 2. Wonder Boy 3 3. Wonder Boy in Monster Land 4. Shinobi 5. Alex Kidd This is effectively the Mount Rushmore of SMS.
*Speedball 2* is my number 1 SMS game. It's fantastic - and just as enjoyable as the Mega Drive game, which i *love.* I was really shocked it didn't even get a mention, considering (the inferior in every way) Speedball 1 did, and SB2 is at #1 on Juganawt's Mega Drive top 50. Also Kenseiden should be right up there on any SMS list.
The snail game in the honorable mention was built in to my master system back in 1989. One day I was fooling around with it with no cartridge installed and discovered it. As a kid I was mind boggled by that neat addition. Great list!!
it was put on the console because there were no real Master System games included with the console... later packages included the Hang-On/Safari Hunt cartridge.
aaah the secret inbuilt snail game. so thrilled at 8 years old when I found that out. turn on master system hold both buttons and down! the master system kick started my 20 year plus love affair with Sega.
quality list there buddy :) I loved that. the sms will always be my fav system. still play it loads now. Wonderboy in monsterland is my fav game of all time
Nice video! Other good games of SMS (in my opinion): Masters of combat, Asterix (series), Donald Duck, Bomber raid, Sagaia, Rampart, Alex Kidd in Shinobi World, Ayrton Senna's Super Monaco GP II, James Pond II, Prince of Persia, Operation Wolf, Wanted, Gangsters town, Could Master, Hang On, Star Wars, The Flash, Daffy Duck in Hollywood, Pacmania, Pshyco Fox, Speedball 2, Golvellius, Kenseiden, etc ... The Sega Master System is a great console :)
I think that Miracle Warriors appeals to a particular niche of people that hadn't played similar games on computers at the time. I had played the Bard's Tale Trilogy and similar titles on home computers before playing Miracle Warriors, and I always found that these types of games just didn't work as well when ported to console. If you like Miracle Warriors, you'll like the sequel on MSX2.
My first console. My dad got me a little TV for my room and a Master System for X-mas when I was 4. That would have been around 1989. Alex the Kidd and Wonderboy in Monsterland were the first games I ever played.
nintendo's NES was the popular one here in america back then, but a friend had a master system. i got to play the ninja, rastan and my hero. always did like those.
+mmaorigionalist1990 Thanks very much! If you want to help my videos get more views, please share it with your friends! Every share, comment, like and subscription helps me build this channel, and I appreciate every single one!
Definetly see the difference between the Master System graphics and the Genesis. The Master System graphic's are more "retro" than the Genesis and on some games it makes them even cooler with less color range than the Genesis. Great lists, I watched your Genesis, MEga cd, and this list because as some one growing up with Nintendo & Super Nintendo I had never really experienced Sega games and I must say I had been missing out on some great gems!
Micro Machines, Dynamite Headdy, Hook, Master of Darkess, Black Belt, Kaitou Saint Tail, Mercs, Chakan the Forever Man, Ghouls n Ghosts, Zillion 2 The Tri Formation, SpellCaster
My top SMS games, in no particular order. Lemmings, Golden Axe, Streets of Rage, Alien Storm, Alien 3, Wonderboy Monster land, Rampage, Double Dragon, Hang On, Golvellius. I devoted some lengthy play time to those titles back when i was a kid. School was shit, I used to leg it home to play them.
Also good games; Galaxy Force, Rastan, Alex Kidd Miracle World, California Games, Gauntlet, The Ninja, Prince of Persia, Teddy Boy and Shadow of the Beast. These are all very well presented games which are still fun to play today.
Penguin Land, Wonder Boy, Teddy Boy, Space Harrier ("GET READY!"), such incredible games that I played for hours and hours when I was younger. Ghost House and Afterburner also great!
I have enjoyed most of lists so far. This is the first one though I'd have a hard time agreeing with since way too many of them were downports from their 16-bit counterparts. At least you had an honorable mention list to make up for it some.
The thing with the Master System is, is that it's bread and butter was originally home ports of arcade games, but as time went on and technology improved l, this migrated to ports of 16-bit games...and the ports were absolutely amazing (for the most part). Not only did they play really well, but a lot of them were technical and graphical showcases that truly showed the potential of the machine - Road Rash being a particular marvel.
#8 - Monica no Castelo do Dragao was a version of this game to be sold as part of the comics named "Turma da Monica", this cartridge used to be in a pack of 12 magazines. But later came in a 4-in-1 cartridge, with Geraldinho, Ferias Frustradas do Pica-pau and Sapo Xule E Os Invasores do Brejo.
Thanks for your good work! In many cases I agree with your selection, but I'm missing three games really hard and in my eyes they're at least worth a honorable mention: "Sagaia" (Darius II) - still much fun and the best graphics I've ever seen on SMS (parallax scrolling, colors, big, detailed sprites...) "The Lucky Dime Caper - Starring Donald Duck" - good graphics, still fun, but not easy to play... "The Cyber Shinobi" - good graphics, good gameplay and a special part of Shinobi...
Thank you for watching! Sagaia got an honorable mention on one of the other systems. It's a fun game but not one of my personal faves. Didn't care much for lucky dime caper - I'm not a huge fan of Platformers in general, so they need to be exceptional for me to sit up and take notice, which LDC didn't do for me. Cyber Shinobi... It never really gelled with me. I'd argue that even Shadow Dancer was a better title in the Shinobi series, and that didn't make the cut either.
Great choices. There were a lot of good SMS games, but a few great ones. Phantasy Star was my favorite and one of the best jrpg's of all time. Road Rash also sported some great graphics. Space Harrier and Outrun were the ones that surprised me.
I watched the whole video and gave it a thumbs up. I am disappointed that Hang On and Rampage were not on this top 50. I think the Master System has the best Arcade port of Rampage.
My top ranked games would probably be: 1. Golden axe warrior 2. Batman returns 3. Sonic the hedgehog 4. Lucky dime caper 5. Castle of illusion 6. Ultima 4 7. Alex Kidd in miracle world 8. Sonic chaos 9. Afterburner 10.Ghouls 'n ghosts Golden axe warrior and Batman returns are IMO wildly underrated games!
So true. *Golden Axe Warrior* is awesome! But your list is undermined by omitting the awesome *Phantasy Star.* I really love *Ys:The Vanished Omens* and *Golvellius* too. Fantastic games.
*Speedball 2* is my number 1 SMS game. It's just fantastic - and just as enjoyable as the Mega Drive game, which i *love.* I was really shocked it didn't even get a mention, considering (the inferior in every way) Speedball 1 did, and SB2 is at #1 on your Mega Drive top 50. Also Kenseiden should be right up there on any SMS list.
+Rooty Kazooty SB 2 on SMS has a few problems. For me, it’s too glitchy and slow to be placed on my favourites list. Even the Commodore 64 version is more fun.
The C64 version is the best IMO. The playfield is about 3 times larger than the Amiga/ST/Mega Drive game, and it's the fastest of all SB2's. The SMS game is fast enough once you've upgraded the team, and benefits from a slightly larger playing field than the 16-bit games. I really haven't noticed glitches, what are they?
most underrated gaming system ever!! In America especially here in the Boston area I was legitimate one of 3 people that I knew my whole life that owned this rather than NES. After Burner Outrun Zillion franchise double Dragon to name a few
+Juganawt that's so wild I learned that recently about the lack of success here in North America sales wise. I've heard in Europe especially in Japan they were very successful!
Only when you look back at the Sega era you see the amount of milked Sonic games they kept releasing. This was a great watch though as the Master System was one of the only sega consoles I never owned and only played Alex The Kid on it at a friends. If I remember right that game was built into the system on launch. Great vid again man
+Algrim "Ginger-Fist" Durinsson The first game built into the Master System is the awesome, incredible "The Snail Game". In later iterations of the BIOS, different games were added, such as Safari Hunt, Hang On, Alex Kidd, and Sonic the Hedgehog 1.
Juganawt I just watched a video on The Snail Game as I don't recall it. Maze puzzles that would eventually leave you tearing your hair out lol. The music is epic though. Thanks reply man
this brought back memories, loved the sonic soundtrack for honorable mentions. My top game is sonic the hedgehog 2 👌 followed with all sonics and all wonderboys.
It's not really funny as the song is based on the MS Sonic track. Maybe it's something to do with Michael Jackson's relationship with Sega - if I remember right he was even an uncredited composer for a Mega Drive/Genesis game. Can't remember which one now.
Systems I had at one time:Atari 2600, Master system, Nes, Super Nes, SEGA GENESIS, SEGA CD, 32X Gamcube, PS1, PS2, N64. And now, all I have is XB1, PS3 and PS2 Slim.
D10078 i hate it i'm eleven and i have xbox one wii u wii 3ds sega genises and i get made fun of for being spoiled witch i am but jeez the kid that makes fun of me is the kid i got an under armer jacket for
Haters will always hate, Christian. Jealousy is a green-eyed monster, and when you don't pay attention to, or fear a monster, they lose all power over you.
Nice. Due to water damage, I recently lost a massive chunk of my collection (about 400 games, and a few systems). I'm slowly getting used to having a more streamlined library, althugh I have to admit, I do keep checking ebay for the prices on buying replacements.
+cazatron There's no doubt Alex Kidd is an iconic game, but it just isn't a favourite of mine. Infact, the entire Alex Kidd series didn't really do anything for me. They aren't bad games by any means, but they're just not my favourites.
It's strange how during the advertisement for the Master System at the start of the video the console is referred to as being a video game........."the ultimate video game - the Sega Master System"....."the Sega Master System has twice as much memory as any other video game".
Yeah back in the early 80's and early 90's, a lot of the older generation called every gaming system either a Nintendo or a "video game". Every handheld was a Game Boy, and no matter whether you were doing spreadsheets, playing pac-man, or editing videos, you were "playing with your computer"!
I wouldn't bother. All the MK games on the MS are terrible although they're technically impressive. The only good one on one fighting game on the system is Masters of Combat. It's not really the MS's fault, it's a problem all the 8 bit systems had. They're just not powerful enough to run this type of game.
Kyle West thank you. yeah I owned Golvellius as a kid. My cartridge has long since gone missing but I have fond memories of it, especially the side scrolling platform sections.
I was invited to be on games master, then to go to games master live - I got my mits on sonic2 for the game gear (same as master system except faster and first boss is so much harder because robotniks bombs didn't just go low - they bounced off the screen too making it virtually impossible to work out where they landed.) - a whole week before it was released here in the uk... that Christmas i got a megadrive with sonic and sonic 2. ahhh memories...
The thing about the Master System was, compared to the NES, it had fewer third party developers, and the third party developers it did have seemingly put lesser effort into their games than the third party developers did on the NES. So there is a higher percentage of what I would call "half-ass games" on the Master System. But when developers did put in the effort, it was clear that the Master System could be just as great of a console as the NES was. Games like Phantasy Star, Wonder Boy 3, R-Type, Shinobi, Alex Kidd, and Sonic were just as good as anything on the NES. Most people just never got to play them, so they aren't as legendary as the big NES games.
I don't think there were any cheats required to get the game working, just turn on the SMS without the cartridge and you've got a game to play. Just curious, what game did your SMS come with? I had Alex The Kidd.
@@planetX15 Snail maze, it was a like pacman in a way if i remember right. It was a hidden game, you had to press up down left right A start, or something along those lines. It wasn't that good of a game though.
@@michaelswords4416 Yes, the Snail Maze maybe you did have to input a code for that, wasn't that on the earlier releases of the SMS? Because I'm fairly certain that Alex Kidd, was on the later ones, I know other systems had Hang On and Sonic 1 built into them too
i love ur vids man, one thing i would love is if u made a distinction in the game titles by region. i find myself having to stop at every one to look up the name of the game in my region. just a little 'us' and 'eu' would do. thanks love ur taste in games
better to get the genesis they have all these games just improved, The genesis is my favorite console system of all time (the model 1) i,m always finding new hidden gems on the system!! EVEN better than the snes which is my second favorite!
My favorites were 'Alex Kidd in Miracle World's, 'Action Fighter', and 'Rambo: First Blood Part II'. The only worthwhile 3D game was 'Maze Hunter 3-D'.
Rastan, Rampage, Choplifter, Black Belt, Govelious, Wonder boy lll, Alex kid in Shinobi World are true greats.

Awful. How is there a SMS list with this many scaled down 16-bit ports? And how are Shinobi and Alex Kidd not even on the bloody list, let alone not in the top ten? At least Wonder Boy 2 and Phantasy Star made the cut (even though they apparently aren't quite as good as the worst available versions of Streets of Rage I and II, a run of the mill beat-em-up by any standard). Cripes.
top list . 1.R-tipe 2.shinobi 3.alex kid miracle world 4. kung-fu kid 5.spce harier 6. miraclewarrior 7. ys 8. time soldier 9.doble dragon 10. phantasy star 11. phantasy zone 1,2 12. penguin land* 13. tunderblade 14. afterburner 15. shoplifter 16.black belt. this are my favorites.
I had one back in the day, it was and is a very underated console. I can't believe Golden Axe didn't make the list, it was my favourite version. Tremendous little console, it had great arcade conversions and a solid version of lemmings too.
As a child I always thought my copy of Transbot was broken as you never got more than the above and underground sections, it wasn’t till a couple of years ago I discovered that’s all there was
Isn't it great how Rambo 2 totally copied (or vice-versa) Jackal and about 12 other games? Fun times! And Rambo 3 (close to "Wanted" the cowboy light-phaser game) was a blast!
Here are a few I liked and not in any order. 1. Kung Fu Kid 2. Lord of the Sword 3. Govellius Valley of Doom 4. Zillion 2 5. Alex Kidd in Miracle World 6. Wonder Boy in Monster World 7. Wonder Boy 3 Dragon's Trap 8. Double Dragon 9. Altered Beast 10. Shinobi 11. Alien Syndrome 12. Ghost Busters 13. Ghost House 14. Penguin Land 15. Kenseidon 16. Rastan 17. Montezuma's Revenge 18. Choplifter 19. Cloud Master 20. Pro Wrestling 21. Shanghai 22. Missile Defense 3D
Coming from someone who owned a Genesis, I always felt like the Master System was a 6 bit system and Genesis was a 14 bit system. Neither ever really impressed me with an exception of maybe a very small handful of games on the Genesis like Aladdin and some others.
Very interesting and many seem to be good games. But I would suggest to keep the title of the game in the side bar instead of just "Master System". This would make it easier to spot any game that got your interest without having to rewind the movie.
now in regards to your list, i have to say right away that my top 100 could not have games that were ported on later consoles, UNLESS it was unique in some form, such as levels design or gameplay, so a lot of these games would not make it onto my list for that reason, nice to see another's opinion though. also i would contest that Golvellius: Valley of Doom deserves Golden Axe Warrior's slot, the music was great, changed every time you upgraded your sword and/or shield, sounds epic by the end, the enemies felt a little bit less of a knock off of the zelda baddies, bosses were unique in their own right, and the game had better gameplay imo, for example there was platforming segments in it, Golden Axe Warrior didnt have that.
+The Gaming Paladin I tried to do something similar in previous videos (they had to be the best 16-bit version of a game to make the list), but many people didn't acknowledge my rules and the videos got a barrage of "Where's (Game X) on the (Console X)", even if it was listed on another system. I'm starting to realise that simpler rules make better viewing and I get less hammered on comments! I had Golvellius as a kid, but for some reason it never gelled with me in the same way GAW did. The platforming segments put me off, I think. When I think of all the RPG's I've ever played, for some reason Golvellius always slips my memory. It was good, but not memorable, and didn't stand out from the crowd in an extremely crowded genre.
very original top 50. there were quite a few games I never realized got ported to the MS. were all those games released in europe or were some only brazil? I have a small collection but this video has me thinking about getting a flash cart
The Master System had absolutely loads of games that unfortunately never made it to the US. Some never made it out of Brazil (like Virtua Fighter and FIFA), so if you want the full Master System experience and you live in the States, you're going to have to import the majority of your games.
+Juganawt sad but true, the marketing for the SMS was rather terrible, i only saw that one commercial when i was 4 and had asked for it for my bday as a result, felt like fate to me until i realized that the marketing just wasnt as good, was very hard to find.
+The Gaming Paladin because at that time US was a Nintendo country. NES dominated US market and any rivalry with it was pointless, but anywhere outside of US and Japanese market Sega had very good chances and so they flooded Europe and Brasil with SMS. Sega couldn't compete with Nintendo's dominance in US until Mega Drive/Genesis appeared.
VonKrauzer it wasnt pointless, it's called Nintendo pulled a dick move and refused business with anyone who supported SEGA and it's merchandise here in the states, and because of NES early success it was effective, very few had the sack to defy Nintendo.
The Gaming Paladin that's true. Nintendo did everything to maintain their market share. Perhaps, "pointless" is wrong choice of word, but Sega indeed had a lot of obstacles to gain their ground on US market. Eventualy, it lead to their ultra-aggressive marketing strategy when SMG came. And it worked - never again Nintendo was a dominant power on US gaming market as in the time of NES.
Alex KIDD IN MIRACLE WORLD IS THE NUMBER 1!!! CASTLE OF ILUSION THE SECOND!!! CALIFORNIA GAMES THE THIRD!!! MONICA NO CASTELO DO DRAGÃO(WONDERBOY) FOURTH!!!!
This almost makes me think the "Mandela effect" is a real thing. This system came out right about the time when I should have been all over it as a kid, but until a few weeks ago, I'd not heard of it. Crazy!
We all have different opinions what's number one from whatever but not really a fan of sonic the hedgehog I like Phantasy Star and Golden Axe way better.Awesome video voice by the way lol.And nice video.
May I have the Link to the honourable mentions bridge zone remix song? This has got to be my favourite remix. So much so that I got up and danced until I was wheezing.
Great video and list. Every single time I watch or fire up a Master System game I wonder how in the hell the NES beat the SMS so badly. The NES is the most overrated system of all time imho. The Genesis vs SNES was a close match. There is no competition concerning the SMS.
Famicom/Nes has like five times more games than the Master System. As much as I love Sega consoles with all my heart (huuuge Sega fanboy here) I can still recognize that the Nes has a way better catalogue, more variety and quality games. Master System is way more powerful regarding graphics though.
Wonder Boy III The Dragon's Trap is one of the best games in music, graphics, mechanics in SMS and surpass any other 8 bit game of other consoles.. a classic

Thank you. I don't get how any sane person can put Sonic 1 below the second one on MS.
Agree with Wonder-Boy 3 - The Dragon's Trap too, which deserves a place at the top spot.
This video is a joke.
Chesco Wonder Boy 3 is beautiful and amazing game.
where is outrun its a fantastic game
Are you crazy?? The real top five:
1. Phantasy Star
2. Wonder Boy 3
3. Wonder Boy in Monster Land
4. Shinobi
5. Alex Kidd
This is effectively the Mount Rushmore of SMS.
A Top50 without Dragon´s Trap, Blasphemy! Is my favourite game.
MonsterWorld or psycho Fox not here?
Alex Kid in miracle world not on top20?
A list like this, and no Wonder Boy 3......that is basically a joke to me.
Jose Montero no spellcaster !
Yoooooo Spellcaster!!
No Kenseiden either.
Great list! I also see or actually hear that you used the FM sound chip where available. Nice!
OMG this nostalgic sound of master system makes me feel so calm and relaxed
The snail game in the honorable mention was built in to my master system back in 1989. One day I was fooling around with it with no cartridge installed and discovered it. As a kid I was mind boggled by that neat addition. Great list!!

I LOVE your 'Top' lists!!! ty! Helps me figure out on what games I missed out on!
Great! Thank you. It really pleases me that I can help people find some great new experiences in gaming!
be aware some of the games are listed as games found on ebay that were never released on the master system by Sega
quality list there buddy :) I loved that. the sms will always be my fav system. still play it loads now.
Nobody ever mentions Miracle Warriors 😭 I was obsessed with it to the point that my mother would say I had Segaitis.
Teddy Boy was the most fun addictive game ever! So simple, yet so addictive. Shame it wasn't on the list.
My first console. My dad got me a little TV for my room and a Master System for X-mas when I was 4. That would have been around 1989.
Alex the Kidd and Wonderboy in Monsterland were the first games I ever played.
I had no idea they made that many "Mortal Kombat" games for the Master System. Nicely compiled video!
Golvilious was one of my favorites, and one of the ones I remember most, can't believe it didn't list!
nintendo's NES was the popular one here in america back then, but a friend had a master system. i got to play the ninja, rastan and my hero. always did like those.
Great list, I had no idea Defenders of Oasis got a Master System release, I had it on my Game Gear years ago and loved it.
Great Video, looking forward to more video`s like this. It derserves thousands of more views
+mmaorigionalist1990 Thanks very much! If you want to help my videos get more views, please share it with your friends! Every share, comment, like and subscription helps me build this channel, and I appreciate every single one!
50 games and does not appear wonder boy 3 the dragon's trap?
Definetly see the difference between the Master System graphics and the Genesis. The Master System graphic's are more "retro" than the Genesis and on some games it makes them even cooler with less color range than the Genesis. Great lists, I watched your Genesis, MEga cd, and this list because as some one growing up with Nintendo & Super Nintendo I had never really experienced Sega games and I must say I had been missing out on some great gems!
+Vee REX Tech Gaming Apps Reviews Cool Stuff I'm so pleased you've discovered some new games!
No Asterix and Obelix?
CooL Mortal Combat. Don't think I've ever played it on the old classic Sega Master System. 😎👍
Thanks for your good work!
In many cases I agree with your selection, but I'm missing three games really hard and in my eyes they're at least worth a honorable mention:
"Sagaia" (Darius II) - still much fun and the best graphics I've ever seen on SMS (parallax scrolling, colors, big, detailed sprites...)
"The Lucky Dime Caper - Starring Donald Duck" - good graphics, still fun, but not easy to play...
Love how you have a bunch of late release stuff. Great list!
Disappointed that Wonder Boy 3, Golvellius and Spellcaster never made it, but a great list nonetheless!
I watched the whole video and gave it a thumbs up. I am disappointed that Hang On and Rampage were not on this top 50. I think the Master System has the best Arcade port of Rampage.
I'd have had Fantasy Zone II, Psycho Fox and Golvellius in there, but that's just my opinion. :)
My top ranked games would probably be:
1. Golden axe warrior
2. Batman returns
3. Sonic the hedgehog
4. Lucky dime caper
5. Castle of illusion
6. Ultima 4
7. Alex Kidd in miracle world
8. Sonic chaos
9. Afterburner
10.Ghouls 'n ghosts
Golden axe warrior and Batman returns are IMO wildly underrated games!
So true. *Golden Axe Warrior* is awesome! But your list is undermined by omitting the awesome *Phantasy Star.*
I really love *Ys:The Vanished Omens* and *Golvellius* too. Fantastic games.
Wonderboy III, Dragons Trap is the best. :)
+Rob Russo as a Brit here in the UK, the opposite was true for me! We either all had master systems or commodore 64's, spectrums or Amigas.
+Juganawt that's so wild I learned that recently about the lack of success here in North America sales wise. I've heard in Europe especially in Japan they were very successful!
I was the only kid with a Master System growing up. Here in Montreal everyone had an NES.
Psycho Fox and Wonder Boy II and 3 should be high on this list. Rampage? Glad you mentioned the Snail Game.
Honorable mentions music is the Sonic theme for master system. But the funny think is it sounds like Janet Jackson`s Together Again.
It's not really funny as the song is based on the MS Sonic track. Maybe it's something to do with Michael Jackson's relationship with Sega - if I remember right he was even an uncredited composer for a Mega Drive/Genesis game. Can't remember which one now.
Never played this console... I had a NES and I didn't know master system had so many colors, most games look awesome!.
Systems I had at one time:Atari 2600, Master system, Nes, Super Nes, SEGA GENESIS, SEGA CD, 32X Gamcube, PS1, PS2, N64. And now, all I have is XB1, PS3 and PS2 Slim.
+D10078 And ODDESEY 2.
13:03 best move
Thanks a million for doing this!!!!
Was mortified not to see Alex kid in the top 50. But yea Sonic 2 no brainer.
Exactly! No Alex Kidd on a TOP X Master System Games... dafuq
+cazatron There's no doubt Alex Kidd is an iconic game, but it just isn't a favourite of mine. Infact, the entire Alex Kidd series didn't really do anything for me. They aren't bad games by any means, but they're just not my favourites.
+Juganawt fair comment and good video pretty much every game i had was on the list fond memorys.
A great list, I would have rated wonderboy 3 higher than wonderboy in monsterland though.
Dragons Trap? For some reason it never clicked with me like Monster Land did.
incredible what the sms was able to do for an 8 bit system. Much better than the NES.
Cool. Mortal Combat 3. Never played it on Sega Master System though 😎👍
I wouldn't bother. All the MK games on the MS are terrible although they're technically impressive. The only good one on one fighting game on the system is Masters of Combat.
It's not really the MS's fault, it's a problem all the 8 bit systems had. They're just not powerful enough to run this type of game.
Excellent video-as always.
Have you ever played Golvellius? I'm really digging it..
Wonder Boy 3! Best game for me, still playing it on my mobile.
God bless you !! I'm from Russia, and we played the same games!
Great!
0:23 Is that kid calling his Master System "Fresh?"
I think he is brazilian, and in brazil you bet your ass you can still buy a brand new master system
Wow so much awsome games from the sega master system.
great video bud!
I'm watching this while listening to Justice's album, Woman. Glorious!
Cool. Mortal Combat 2. Never played it on the saga master system though 😎👍
Golden axe warrior, such a great game.
THE MUSIC ON THE FIRST STAGE WAS AWSOME
a lot of people didn't know that there was free game built in to the master system. I still remember the cheat to get it working.
Because I'm fairly certain that Alex Kidd, was on the later ones, I know other systems had Hang On and Sonic 1 built into them too
I was sure Psycho Fox or Wonderboy III was number 1 but SONIC 2 is also good and an achievement guys!!! 😎
i love ur vids man, one thing i would love is if u made a distinction in the game titles by region. i find myself having to stop at every one to look up the name of the game in my region. just a little 'us' and 'eu' would do. thanks love ur taste in games
malevo311 good suggestion. I'll bear that in mind for future videos
6 out of these 50 games are worth owning in my opinion.
Begins and ends with Shinobi for me. That was the whole reason I wanted a Sega when all my friends had Nintendo
Streets of Rage 2 at number 2? Oh no no no. Thanks for doing this list though.
better to get the genesis they have all these games just improved, The genesis is my favorite console system of all time (the model 1) i,m always finding new hidden gems on the system!! EVEN better than the snes which is my second favorite!
Tell us more about these gems? It's my favorite console too!
My favorites were 'Alex Kidd in Miracle World's, 'Action Fighter', and 'Rambo: First Blood Part II'. The only worthwhile 3D game was 'Maze Hunter 3-D'.
今思えば日本でヒットしなかったのが不思議なくらい良い作品ばかり!当時はRPGブームでファミコンばかり注目されましたが冷静に今見るとこちらの方がレベル高い気がします。
Cripes.
All the Genesis titles listed here are not original , they are cheap knock offs and black market varients not made by Sega or the respective parties.
top list .
1.R-tipe
2.shinobi
3.alex kid miracle world
4. kung-fu kid
5.spce harier
6. miraclewarrior
7. ys
8. time soldier
9.doble dragon
10. phantasy star
11. phantasy zone 1,2
12. penguin land*
13. tunderblade
14. afterburner
15. shoplifter
16.black belt.
this are my favorites.
3:47 that game had nice music
"Passing Breeze" from OutRun. It's a series with some really spectacular music.
"Last wave" is remarkable
Mr Eighty lol
dang i need a master system now i didnt know how much cleaner this system ran compared to the nes :)
I had one back in the day, it was and is a very underated console. I can't believe Golden Axe didn't make the list, it was my favourite version. Tremendous little console, it had great arcade conversions and a solid version of lemmings too.
Some great games in your list
As a child I always thought my copy of Transbot was broken as you never got more than the above and underground sections, it wasn’t till a couple of years ago I discovered that’s all there was
Isn't it great how Rambo 2 totally copied (or vice-versa) Jackal and about 12 other games? Fun times! And Rambo 3 (close to "Wanted" the cowboy light-phaser game) was a blast!
Here are a few I liked and not in any order.
1. Kung Fu Kid
2. Lord of the Sword
3. Govellius Valley of Doom
4. Zillion 2
5. Alex Kidd in Miracle World
6. Wonder Boy in Monster World
7. Wonder Boy 3 Dragon's Trap
8. Double Dragon
9. Altered Beast
10. Shinobi
11. Alien Syndrome
12. Ghost Busters
13. Ghost House
14. Penguin Land
15. Kenseidon
16. Rastan
17. Montezuma's Revenge
18. Choplifter
19. Cloud Master
20. Pro Wrestling
21. Shanghai
22. Missile Defense 3D
zillion 2? really
kung fu kid missle defense agreed
Yeah, what was wrong with Zillion 2? I owned it and beat it dozens of times.
im sure i could beat it but by stage 4 i just turned it off. The Ninja on the other hand was a fun game.
Coming from someone who owned a Genesis, I always felt like the Master System was a 6 bit system and Genesis was a 14 bit system. Neither ever really impressed me with an exception of maybe a very small handful of games on the Genesis like Aladdin and some others.
Cool Spot 😎👍👍
Very interesting and many seem to be good games. But I would suggest to keep the title of the game in the side bar instead of just "Master System". This would make it easier to spot any game that got your interest without having to rewind the movie.
Good call. I'll consider that for future videos.
Wlw ! I like it, so much !
Excelent selection!
Sonic 2 :
Wonderfull number 1 !
Congratulations _
now in regards to your list, i have to say right away that my top 100 could not have games that were ported on later consoles, UNLESS it was unique in some form, such as levels design or gameplay, so a lot of these games would not make it onto my list for that reason, nice to see another's opinion though.
also i would contest that Golvellius: Valley of Doom deserves Golden Axe Warrior's slot, the music was great, changed every time you upgraded your sword and/or shield, sounds epic by the end, the enemies felt a little bit less of a knock off of the zelda baddies, bosses were unique in their own right, and the game had better gameplay imo, for example there was platforming segments in it, Golden Axe Warrior didnt have that.
Great video what software do you use for editing?
Thanks!
I use Sony Movie Studio / Vegas 13 for the main video editing and I use Corel Paint Shop Pro for the graphic / thumbnail editing.
+Juganawt ok thanks for the info
Alex KIDD IN MIRACLE WORLD IS THE NUMBER 1!!!
CASTLE OF ILUSION THE SECOND!!! CALIFORNIA GAMES THE THIRD!!! MONICA NO CASTELO DO DRAGÃO(WONDERBOY) FOURTH!!!!
Illusion*
Number 1 for both!!!!
This almost makes me think the "Mandela effect" is a real thing. This system came out right about the time when I should have been all over it as a kid, but until a few weeks ago, I'd not heard of it. Crazy!
Where do you live, the US? Here in Europe the Master System was more popular than the NES.
Yes, the US. The NES was way more popular here.
I definitely would of put golden axe, rastan, kensiden , on my list...
Cool Afterburner 😎
We all have different opinions what's number one from whatever but not really a fan of sonic the hedgehog I like Phantasy Star and Golden Axe way better.Awesome video voice by the way lol.And nice video.
Cool Wonder Boy 😎👍👍
Road Rush looks fantastic, If it was'nt music, I was thinking, that you mistook it with Genesis version
+Mazgid it's a true showcase of programming excellence
Deep Duck Trouble is the best SMS game I've ever played.
Sad it's not in that top 😢
May I have the Link to the honourable mentions bridge zone remix song? This has got to be my favourite remix. So much so that I got up and danced until I was wheezing.
Had Castle of Illusion on Game Gear loved it
Great video and list. Every single time I watch or fire up a Master System game I wonder how in the hell the NES beat the SMS so badly. The NES is the most overrated system of all time imho. The Genesis vs SNES was a close match. There is no competition concerning the SMS.
truly the SMS is underrated,my first console ever,my first games Alex Kidd, Shinob,Wonderboy, best games ever.
Famicom/Nes has like five times more games than the Master System.
As much as I love Sega consoles with all my heart (huuuge Sega fanboy here) I can still recognize that the Nes has a way better catalogue, more variety and quality games.
Master System is way more powerful regarding graphics though.
Cool old classic Zillion 😎👍👍
Dynamite Duke and Safari hunter - the best. From Russia with love.
