The Neo Geo was definitely an underdog of the 16-32 bit era. Not only did it give birth to my personal favorite puzzle game franchise (Bust-A-Move/Puzzle Bobble), but it also was the go-to system for games that would ultimately destroy friendships one KoF match at a time. Oh, and Metal Slug was and still is the shit when it comes to run-and-gunners.
Funny story, once I went to an asian arcade on my travels, and sat myself down on a mini cab with KOF98. A young pro who was hogging the game on the cab opposite me challenged me to a battle. 15 minutes several dollars later, he slumped away from the cabinet, utterly defeated. Before he left, I saw him poke his head around the cabinets to get a glimpse of the person who kicked his ass. He was surprised to see me - a gigantic white guy, smiling at him.

Excellent list as always Juganawt and when you mentionned that The Last Blade would make a convincing case to show video games as a valid form of art, you just read my mind. The neo geo is what I consider the best "Video games are art" console. The sprite work has yet to be matched by modern developpers, it is simply breathtaking.

By the way, there's a Facebook group that hosts quarterly Neo Turf Masters Tournaments if anyone is interested :) Look for the "Neo Turf Masters Clubhouse" group for more details. I know I'm late to the party, but I totally agree that KoF 2003 is underappreciated. It's my favorite to play on my MAME cabinet. They (meaning rom dumpers) really need to release a NeoGeo/SNK exclusive rom pack. That would be great.
breakers revenge doesn't get enough love imo, great to see it make the list here. really high quality spritework. Also agree that the Real Bout games are underrated - I think they tend to get unfairly overshadowed by the KOF games (I actually prefer the real bout sprites) and Mark of the Wolves... Something else that just occured to me.. I love Capcom as much as the next guy (used to work for them) but I can promise you if they'd done a crossover game like KOF they would have reused all the sprites from the source games to save costs. Not so SNK, who redrew characters like Yamazaki from fatal fury to match the KOF style. Now that's artistic integrity. Excellent channel btw, just starting to dig in to these list videos :)
Absolutely enjoyed the review, was a pleasure listening to you talk about why you enjoyed each game, what made each game stand out. With that being said, I know the time we're talking about was a Fighter Game orgasm, but christ all mighty. A top 50 Neo Geo Game list and 45 of the games are fighter games. I did enjoy the review though, keep up the good work mate! ----Edit--- Just finished the video. When we got to the honorable mentions portion of the review, I knew, 10000% that number one on your list was going to be a fighting game. Figured since you put this much effort into your list, I'd at least take a look at Fatal Fury 4. You did say 'My personal top 50 games'. Nice list, can't argue with your positioning of the games. Previous comment stands, keep up the good work!
+No No 29 out of the 50 games on my list are fighting games and brawlers, so just over half of the list. This really is reflective of the console library itself - it's filled to the brim with interesting fighters, beat em ups and shooters, but is a little thin in other areas. The system thrived with its fighting games though, and that's what the system is not only what it's best known for, but it's what the system did best of all.
2D hand drawn sprites are imperative - arcade replayability is imperative. Treasure on Sega, the PC engine and the Neo-Geo are the ONLY answers here. Neo-Geo may be at the top. Shmups are my favorite. So. YOU DROPPED THE BALL HERE! Pulstar. Pulstar is THE #1 game on Neo-Geo. THE #1 shmup ever. Difficulty to make you pull your hair out and commence to speaking in tongues but you keep coming back because you know it's not being cheap. Give it a few weeks of play. Kevin at Gamestuff back in the 90's called my home at 11pm to let me know he had found something there on the streets of Tokyo that he knew I wanted, he shipped it COD. Pulstar AES. It was just under $1,000 US. That man took SUCH good care of me back in the peak days of gaming. ('93 -'97) - I think he shipped me Soukyugurentai for PSX or Saturn three times, just as a complimentary. Thao Nguyen of Multi Arcade Systems was another good friend back in the day. He made me my arcade cabinet and controllers.
Fantastic list! I think you didn't leave a single game that deserved to be here behind, which is quite an accomplishment. Personally I would've chosen some of the honorable mentions over the main 50 (I mean do KOF fans really keep playing 6 different versions to this day???). Nam for example is the only one and possibly the best from its genre on any system, deserved a spot on the top 50 for sure. Also I wouldn't categorize Ninja Commando or Shock Troopers as shmups, more like run 'n gun. But I'm just nitpicking here.
I love this system, the Neo geo was a beast of a machine. My only gripe is that too many Fighting games were made, and not enough 2d side scrollers and shooters. Having said that, I still own about 50 titles for it and they are among my favourite games for replay value. It's even got the best golf game ever made fer chrissakes. Thanks to emulation and the ACA series of re-releases everyone can enjoy these games now.

as a guy who has played most of these games extensively, there are two things that i have to disagree with, 1: KoF 98' is the best game in the KoF series although 02' is a very close second. 2: King of the monsters should at least be top 20, from pure entertainment value that game is off the roof. Other than those two things, id say you got it spot on. Well done!
holy shit. good call on sf3 3rd strike. fav fighter of all time. played it at some awesome arcade at the beach when i was like 14. first game played on my mame cab........
Matt Crane yup, i am a die hard KoF fan who would deludedly say KoF>SF all day and im not even a fan of the FF series. But i would just humbly admit that Mark of the Wolves is one of the most well thought out, beautifully animated and simply one of the best 1on1 fighting game ever made.
The Neo Geo itself is like no other system at the time. The AES system WAS an arcade in your home. With a converter, you can literally buy the arcade versions of games, and play them on your Neo Geo AES console. It was much more expensive than it's competitors, but was leaps and bounds ahead of any other 16-bit system when it launched in 1990.
Well I'll be starting my Neo Geo emulation this week then! Jug, as you listed a great number of Fatal Fury / King of Fighters games, would you recommend I play them all, or can I skip straight to the later games?
+The Game Show each game has its own overarching style, as well as its own fighting systems and mechanics. If you're a fighting game fan, then it's absolutely worth checking out each version of the games, as they are all different to each other in many ways. If you're not a fighting fan, play Fatal Fury: King Of Fighters, Fatal Fury Special, KOF94, KOF 98, KOF 2002, KOF 2003, and then Garou Mark of the wolves, to get a good overview of the FF/KOF series
Great reply, thanks. I would classify myself as a casual fighting game fan. I can throw hands in any version of Street Fighter and I dabble in a couple of other franchises. I picked up Fatal Fury 3 recently for PC and I've never played anything from this series, despite the acclaim.
My Bell-end appreciates your gentle caress. I've yet to acquire a Neo Geo Mini - it's the only system I'm currently missing from my "mini" set. Hoping to get one of those fancy blue translucent ones for Christmas!
I do agree with the baseball game # 14 for the most part. But there were some Japanese exclusives on the super famicom that were outstanding and incredibly fun as well. And let not forget about kg jr
I will have to disagree with Kof 2002 being better ranked than Kof 98. Kof 98 was (to me and I believe to the majority of players) just perfection and fairness of play / balanced characters. You can't do infinite combos in 98 (or at least they're not easy to do if they exist at all which I'm not sure they do). 98 is just raw , tight , fast fighting all across the board. I would definitely place 97' and 2000 right after 98. They're pretty fucking good as well. I think those are the TOP 3 of the King of Fighters Series. Good Neo Geo video nontheless. Always a joy to watch arcade content.
Nice list man. I think AOF2 & KOF '95 AI's are too damn cheap to be fun. In my opinion Real Bout Special should be about 25 places higher! The fluidity of gameplay is nailed and they kept the excellent FF3 music and roster. AOF1 feels like a Van Damme movie and should make the top 20, as should 2020 super baseball for encapsulating the Neo Geo futuristic arcade aesthetic perfectly. KOF '94 and the first Fatal Fury should be in there for solid, tactical one-on-one gameplay and excellent presentation & music too. King of the Monsters 1, Savage Reign, World Heroes 1 & Perfect are a good time as is Sengoku 1...
I didn't realize Neo Geo has so many interesting games I bought a couple of them on the Xbox Live store hopefully these will come on board as well later
I downIoaded Neo Geo Rage on my computer. Where it's basicaIIy a Neo Geo emuIator with over 200 SNK games on it. I've pIayed so many of these games you mentioned and they're aII awesome. If the Neo Geo wasn't so expensive in the states, there's no reason why the NEo Geo couIdn't have competed with consoIes out at the time. Ahead of its time as far as I'm concerned, awesome video by the way homie.
rom carts for 16megs was like $60, now imagine the costs of 100 to 300 meg carts! games priced at 250 to 500 for 1 game was just too much for neo geo to be in every home
+msk33 it surprised me too. I fully expected it to be as fun a game as I remembered it being, but it hasn’t aged well, and I found myself getting bored rather quickly
Hi! Im a little bit dissapointed because there is no Aggresors of Dark Kombat game. I think that game deserves to be in this list or at least at honorable mentions ;) greetings!
King of the Monsters, Magician Lord, Ninja Combat, World Heroes, Metal Slug Series, Shock Troopers these I play the most But I’ll tell you Neo Geo they made Fabulous Games For the Arcades even though they didn’t sell well for home use.
The Last Blade, Blazing Star Metal Slug and the Last Resord are really excellent game and whoever Akade Games Mag does not miss neo geo. In my opinion the best 16 bit system there is. Just what they got out of the hardware at Blasing Star and then the awesome gameplay, a very nice soundtrack and a beautiful graphics, one of the nicest games I ever played on a console that I owned. I regret to this day, out of financial need to sell my Neo Geo systems.
Honestly the only Neo Geo stuff I've played was the Metal Slug series, and they were only ports on other systems. Now I have the chance to check out the best games through the power of emulation. There sure are a lot of fighting games! Sheesh! xD I already tried out Art of Fighting 2 and Neo Drift Out. Pretty awesome games I wish I had played back in the day.
It's one of those few systems where nearly every single game on the system is well worth playing. There are only a handful of titles I played that I didn't enjoy during going through the entire catalog during my 25 hour recording session.
Yep, some of the games for the home based system can run you THOUSANDS. However, it's better value to buy the arcade game cartridges and a converter to run them on an AES system. You can also buy an arcade multi cart with pretty much every Neo Geo game in the library included for about £100 / $120.
I think you will find that awesomer is in the dictionary and it refers to Pulstar haha glad to see that game in this list all though i think its actually better that blazing star but thats just my opinion im defo gonna check that Zed Blade out now :-)
I remember a side scrolling zombie beat em up where you could choose to fight as a female ninja who used a scroll to kill zombies, a martial artist who used some kind of crystal and a cyborg with robotic arms to killed zombies with electricity. KOF 02 was my second kof game i played (03 was first but it looked not right) but man KOF 2002 was my childhood played it every time i could
Great video. I like that you had Zedblade in there. But sad you didnt like Viewpoint or Last Resort enough to put them in your top 50.
I have invested some time into the full collection of neo geo games and have to agree my list is pretty close to yours.
I love SNK so much. With all of these great games with amazing graphics and gameplay to match, I'm surprised they didn't take over the Industry.
is that SNK music in your honourable mentions part?
Very nice games list! + 1 signed up
very good video, seen a lot of interesting titles in this list, did you use MAME to play them?
No. Mame isn't fully accurate. It doesn't seem to cope well with some visual effects on several games..
I cant tell the difference between mame and the original neo geo carts/arcade
Best emulator ever: FBNeo
NeoGeo is the embodiment of (Future is here), unbelievable console in 2021
Nice video. The best game on the Neo Geo was never released, but it would have been 'Battle Arena 2Dinden" lol
King of the Monsters 1, Savage Reign, World Heroes 1 & Perfect are a good time as is Sengoku 1...
ravenlondon Correct I was Playing AOF2 AI was Cheating Couldnt pull off moves to slow
I would like to see a top50 for the Virtual Boy
I love the honorable mentions! Did you include every Neo Geo game?
Creative Cat Productions no. There are around 160 games overall for the system, so I covered about half of them.
Juganawt that’s still an amazing percentage! The neo geo seems to have a very high percentage of quality titles for such a small library
Nice list! I am a bit surprise however that you did not mention Mutation Nation, even on the honorable mention.
+msk33 it surprised me too. I fully expected it to be as fun a game as I remembered it being, but it hasn’t aged well, and I found myself getting bored rather quickly
Just got a pl image you set me straight for NeoGeo thanks!
Hi! Im a little bit dissapointed because there is no Aggresors of Dark Kombat game. I think that game deserves to be in this list or at least at honorable mentions ;) greetings!
Top 50 king of fighters games!
Hey! Like 12 of them were Fatal Fury.
There's only less than 50 KOF games.
King of the Monsters, Magician Lord, Ninja Combat, World Heroes, Metal Slug Series, Shock Troopers these I play the most But I’ll tell you Neo Geo they made Fabulous Games For the Arcades even though they didn’t sell well for home use.
the best top video on the net
Nothing like the face of WTF? of a friend when you pick Omega rugal and kick ass xD
Top Hunter and double dragon did not make it to your list I see, but 20 of 400055030123 existing king of fighters gmaes did, waw!!
Was Neo Geo all arcade games? Or did they have say an interesting JRPG or two on the home version?
Dope vid sir BONAASS
What is the neo Geo game you can play with 2 players. For one quarter for each player they get 4 characters to play as to fight?
What was the song used in the honorable mention section?
No Burning Fight, Double Dragon, Crossed Swords?
The baseball game looks so much fun,
What is the name of the track that is heard during the honorable mentions?
I dig it. Nice list.
Awesome video
What's the name of the ost used while waiting for no. 1 game?
Pretty awesome games I wish I had played back in the day.
thanks for the video.
*Just the into deserves a thumbs up!*
I love Real Bout 1 and I'm surprised that I don't see any World Heroes on your 1-50 list
Street Hoop, Turf Masters and Fatal Fury Real Bout are my favorites.
It's one of those few systems where nearly every single game on the system is well worth playing. There are only a handful of titles I played that I didn't enjoy during going through the entire catalog during my 25 hour recording session.
You got good picks bro👍
this probably has one of the coolest libraries in gaming what the heck
I kinda wish you didn't put Magical Drop as honorable mentions
Oh gawds my eyes they burn , they burn, they burn it's like staring into the sun , it's to awesome for words
Hows the intro lol that made my day man!!!!
i want a neo geo but they are so darn expensive
Yep, some of the games for the home based system can run you THOUSANDS. However, it's better value to buy the arcade game cartridges and a converter to run them on an AES system. You can also buy an arcade multi cart with pretty much every Neo Geo game in the library included for about £100 / $120.
That's a good deal, considering that every Neo Geo cart that was made was worth $50-100 at the time.
SK8VINTAGE you can download an emulator on playstore and download also the rom
Just emulate boy,, even your smarthphone can emulate neo geo this days....
Just buy an snes classic and hack it
Great content was lucky to have played some of these titles.
I think you will find that awesomer is in the dictionary and it refers to Pulstar haha glad to see that game in this list all though i think its actually better that blazing star but thats just my opinion im defo gonna check that Zed Blade out now :-)
Were the graphics/audio in the NEO GEO console the same as the NEO GEO arcade?
the AES? yeah the EXACT same.
Great!! Thanks for that
garou TOP Mode make your character deal more damage, regen health, faster meter build up and new special move by pressing LK+HP
Someone put a full list please
Best retro intro
I remember a side scrolling zombie beat em up where you could choose to fight as a female ninja who used a scroll to kill zombies, a martial artist who used some kind of crystal and a cyborg with robotic arms to killed zombies with electricity. Does anybody remember the name of this one? I loved playing it.
Night Slashers
Metal slug 2 + X started with the first level video but the second level audio
The entire Garou Densetsu series is in this list, as it should be.
Art Of Fighting 1 + 2 💛💙💜
AOF1 is boss.
AOF2 is an improvement but the gameplay feels less brutal and more slippery.
