I’m from the UK and this kind of tradition is bizarre to me, but I have to say I’m absolutely amazed by how precise and entertaining this is. I’m addicted to these videos

This is a classic college tradition in the US, and The Ohio State Marching Band is in the top 5. Uniquely American and a cool tradition.

Interesting perspectives for those who have never been in a marching band. No matter whose band it is. As a piccolo player it was interesting to me to see what trombonists go through with their slides.

Wow! Great job on the half-time performance! I gotta ask because I played bass trombone in my college band - 1) does the school provide all the trombones as every brass instrument I saw on the field was silver-plated. I saw some trombones with F attachments - guessing some were bass trombones. When I marched decades ago, there were flag people on the field that you could key off of to find your position for the different parts of the program - I saw none of that here, so how you get from one formation to the other and end up in the right place without wrapping your slide around someone's head is nothing less than amazing! Anyway - thanks for taking us "veterans" back on the field one more time - it was great!

Practice....lots of practice. 2+ hours a day plus what you put in on your own time. Not many people realize this until they look for flip-folders (to hold music) and don't see them on the instruments. Every show (pregame and halftime) is completely memorized (of course the moves as well as music). If there are multiple back-to-back home games, like this year, that's a new pregame and halftime every week. Back in my day, we typically got the new show and music on Monday (along with watching and critiquing last week's show video) and had music checks 3 days later, on Thursday. If you failed to memorize your music and failed the check, you became an alternate. All of this while maintaining a college course load.
Also, this video shows what it's like to go through those tight crossovers that connect the big "O" and the "h." Members were taught to snap their instrument down, push through the crossover (without deviating from a straight path through) and then snap their instrument back up. Luckily us drummers could stop in the bottom half of the big "O," so we didn't have to haul drums through the crossovers. During my time, Dr. Droste converted the trombonium players to slide trombones...brand new (King?) silver-plated trombones purchased by the school. It must have taken time to get used to getting the trombones snapped down because there would be a (broken) slide or two lying on the ground after a script. Again, people crossing over from your side were taught to push through even if a slide got in the way. It kept the rather large instrument repair staff busy;-)
