  • I started splitting these two spalted maple logs and processing some billets to be made into bowls, spoons, pendants, ect. I ended up carving a good sized ladle from a nice crooked section of the log. At this point its 95% finished, but I will let it dry and make finishing cuts and apply oil after a few weeks. Let me know what you think!

You are a connoisseur of the beauty of wood but also of its whims. Will you leave the bottom of the ladle as it is as forged or will it be polished?

I don’t do any polishing, everything is finished with a sharp blade ,burnished and oiled. Those three things create a very smooth finish

Just curious....I am new at making spoons and was wondering if this was green wood? When I split my firewood in the winter I am always finding really pretty pieces and now wonder if I could have used them? Since I only heat with wood I always have a huge supply but it is seasoned about a year. Maybe it matters the kind of wood? most of mine is hard wood. Good for heating, but maybe not for carving? Being new I do not want to start with wood that is terribly hard to carve and get frustrated. Thank you.

This piece was stored as a log with the ends painted for 1.5 years or so. It loses moisture more slowly that way so it was simi green. Depending on the wood species and how dry it is will depend on how hard it to carve. I’m mostly carving hard woods but generally not anything super dry. If it’s too dry most hardwood are going to be a lot more work than it’s worth. You could always try carving something small and see how it feels.

@@modestgreenwoodcarving2899 Thank you painting the ends is a good idea! and easy. I like your videos, spoon carving videos are a rabbit hole, so I only watch a couple of people.

I appreciate your support ❤️. It is quite the rabbit hole for sure but it’s a ton of fun and I love seeing new people try it out!

Interesujący film. Świetnie dobrana muzyka. Ja też, amatorsko, strugam łyżki z drewna. Właśnie jestem w trakcie robienia podobnej, jak na filmie. Tylko dużo mniejszej. Pozdrawiam z Polski.

I agree and most of my videos are music free this is I think the second time I’ve used music. Just wanted to play around and try new stuff, but I appreciate the feedback. It’s easier to not deal with copyrights and whatnot 😂
