"The old Gods haven't left this place..." is such a great eerie line. It sounds like it could be straight out of a Lovecraft story, or the first season of _True Detective._
The way she says "Ohhh, James" at 0:48, in this sort of "awwww, poor you" voice but with that really sinister mocking edge to it. Really adds to the scene.
I love this ending. It's so chilling, probably my favorite out of all them. All the other ones are great and end rather conclusively, but this one is just such an enormous cliffhanger. "The Old Gods haven't left this place" what an ominous and foreboding line, holy shit. My jaw dropped so hard when I read that line for the first time, it got me thinking "That absolute madman... is he really gonna do it???? Despite everything, he's just gonna say fuck it and try to make a deal with the devil? Cause he misses Mary so much???" What a plotline that would be, seeing James try to commune with ancient entities of darkness to resurrect his wife. I can't imagine what they would ask from him, that shit would probably backfire so hard. She'd probably come back to life all fucked up. I really wish there was an official continuation for this ending, I feel like it's so open-ended and full of potential. Not only that, but I feel like James going out of his way to tamper with life and death and play God is very true to his character, he probably feels batshit insane after all the shit that happened in Silent Hill and feels like he's past the point of no return, there's no way he can go back to a normal life now unless he sees Mary again.
It would be nice to know what happened after the events. The ending is supposed to be up to the players, which is fun, but I think it would be great to have a definitive answer Think of it like this: James makes contact with these Old Gods to ressurect Mary. But in order to do so, they need a soul. So, James offers up his own But because this is a "deal with the devil" type situation as you mentioned, not only does James die, Mary is reborn as a new monster Or, this could be the story of a sequel: finding the right soul - or a number of them - as the first mission. But after Mary is brought back deformed, she changes Silent Hill into a prison. James being her most important prisoner. And then you take control of some new, poor sap who has to fix it
I agree with all your points, the idea of what could happen as a result of the ritual seems eerie and morbid. It's also interesting how the Born from a Wish scenario has Maria retrieve the white chrism ritual item for Ernest. Really makes you wonder about its emphasis on the resurrection ritual and teasing the rebirth ending. This is my favorite ending because of the various references to it throughout the game and the Maria scenario.
Honestly. That's all dressing to me. I just love how delightfully ironic it is. Assuming the ritual works: James gets exactly what he wanted. Mary is back and they're in Silent Hill again ...FOREVER.
Theres a theory i like The events of sh2 take place a couple hours after marys murder the creators said the drowning ending was canon so i belive he went there to kill himself with marys corpse in the trunk of the car the start of the game where your in the bathroom is where silent hills hallucinations take effect maria sees the same thing as you so she is a hallucinaton the other 3 people see there own thing so there probably real one of which knew mary and has a letter from the week before which could work if the theorys right

I was in my mid-teens when SH2 came out. Back then, I thought that this ending was really the best possible one. But now? God, no. That one is genuinely the creepiest and my younger self way of thinking creeps me out too. Still, SH2 is HELL - literally - of a masterpiece.

The former by moving on from guilt and embracing love towards child and latter by refusing to move on and dying. Other endings use Silent Hill "magic" which is long time corrupted to the bone. In SH4, Joseph Schreiber comes right out in stating that the Order has got it all wrong. As I understand the unfolding of the Silent Hill mythology as developed by Team Silent (SH1-SH4), Silent Hill is a locus of dark forces that antedate the Order and hijack their beliefs to accomplish their own purposes in the world. If there is a chief being, it is Samael. But the Order's mythology is not the trademark truth about Silent Hill, the principalities and powers behind it, and their actual economic relation to the world, as it were.

I think this is supposed to be a reference to Stephen King's Pet Sematary, which is about an ancient Native American burial ground which resurrects everything that is buried in it, but in a dark and twisted way and shit hits the fan when someone tries to resurrect a person with it, and the book ends with the protagonist trying to resurrect his dead wife in the burial grounds. This can be further supported by the fact the Order's cult has roots in Native American beliefs of the people that once inhabited the area around the shores of Lake Toluca, mixing with elements of Christianity once settlers drove the Natives away or killed them.

Well, to understand this ending you need to take the prospective of James. James in this version, when he killed mary realize that he cant live without mary, so he in a desperate attempt to resurrect her, brings her courpes (which its was in the backseat of his car at the beginning of the game) to a church in a little island in the toluca lake to perform a ceremony with the items of the cult that he finds in his journey to SH in plans to resurrect her, but we never knew the outcoming, maybe James made the pact with the ancient Gods and resurrect her, but what price he paid for that? The crimson ceremony book tells that the gods of Sh are extremely vengefull againts those who dont venerate them, that's something to think about.

If you then use it as a metaphor the only good ending is when you move on and change and most importantly clean yourself from stuff that does not allow you to move on. Endings that force you to cling on to Maria/Mary obviously do not reflect James's willingness to get better. He instead chooses to pay any price for his narcotic to be in the bloodstream. That narcotic is Mary or Maria. James has to accept natural order of things because shortcuts are clearly corruptive and twisting. Plus for me taking care of Laura was always no brainer. In this context reasonable person would do everything to save that child, only person who succumbs to madness would abandon that smart kid. Leave ending is for people who do not succumb into madness, rebirth is for people who have big attachment problems. Love is most important, but you should not prioritize your love towards dead people. It's understandable that people are in pain and sometimes pain is too big, but nothing good comes from this. To be a man is to take responsibility and to own up your sins and move on. That was lesson for James. Sorry for the wall of text XD
I think regardless of the “canon” ending, James killed himself before the game even started. In Water is just what he did as soon as he got to Silent Hill. Silent Hill being the nexus of reality that it is, it wouldn’t let him just die without playing with him first, so it brought him back and put him through the full story, to test him like it does everybody. Leave is the best case scenario ending, but it’s quite possible Laura was in James’ head too, maybe the hypothetical unborn daughter of him and Mary, so that may just be as much of a red herring as the Maria ending. There’s no music in the Leave ending, which makes it feel dull, plus it’s essentially a retread of the good endings from the first game. If we wanted the first game, we’d just play it again, right? This ending adds another layer to the story and makes an effort to tie it to the main canon of the series. Especially when you consider Ernest, the ghost from the “Born from a Wish” mini game. He 1) knows that Maria is a manifestation of the town, even if he doesn’t explicitly state it, and 2) seems to have been working on a way to resurrect the dead via the formula he asks Maria to retrieve. It’s quite possible Ernest was involved in the cult, and his influence is acting through James to test his theories about resurrecting the dead. And this being Silent Hill, we can only assume things don’t go so well once James actually tries to resurrect Mary.
I don't know the Orders/Gods story in depth, but the order wants to give birth to a God. Wouldn't this sperm and egg symbolism imply that, by resurrecting Mary, James will now begin the process of something like that. Possibly after she is resurrected and they have sex (his sexual deprivation) she will birth that demonic God. This ending is 100% up for interpretation. I love it.

The Order could only birth god pretty much exclusively through Alessa/Cheryl/Heather as she is the only vessel for god. If anyone could serve as a vessel for God to be given birth then Silent Hill 1 wouldn't have even happened to begin with. He probably doesn't even know who The Order even really are specifically. Most likely he has just learned how to reanimate people (hence what he plans to do) and also of the various gods the cult worships.
This has to be the worst ending. James learns his lesson, but TOO MUCH! He cannot live without Mary, so he gives up his life to the Old Gods (going against Mary's wishes in her letter to live for himself) and SELFISHLY STEALS Mary's soul from the AFTERLIFE. This is by far the worst, even considering the Maria ending, because at least he's only truly harming himself in that one.
