Bro ur taking everything sooo seriously kooleen is know to make jokes and put on this act cafe free attitude it’s not supposed to be taken seriously what so ever! 😅
I'm a whole art teacher, whose taught many students how to do art - i cannot watch tutorial videos because 99% of the time it's moderately popular artists whose fans begged them to give a "tutorial" on how to do their art. Kooleen's content just wasn't for me, I can only handle hearing the words "smexy" so many times before i dip
Honestly as someone who watches her content, personally I don’t pay attention to the tutorial stuff. It can actually be a bit harmful of this mentality to “be just like your idol”, plus her tutorials doesn’t apply to all art styles.
I clicked on one of her videos about "roasting your art" and I think she had to say the words "juicy lips" and "smexy" when talking about every single drawing. It was so repetitive, just reusing the same "joke" or "meme" over and over again...
No hate to koleen honestly but i agree I got real tired of the close up mic with how everything has to be SMEXY, and the over hyperfixation of kpop idols/uzzlangs as her ref oasidoasdnj
It's insane how many times it needs to be said that you can draw black people in the anime style without making their features eurocentric. Like come on people, we even have examples
I don’t like makings things abt myself but uh My artstyle is HEAVILY influenced by anime and manga, but most characters I draw don’t really have Eurocentric features. (Granted, the anime I take a lot of inspiration from is one that takes influence from black + western communities..)
As a filipino its actually not uncommon for darkskin filipinos to experience colorism from lightskin filos. My kuya literally called this girl "mud face" as she was just walking down the street. And the thing is she was so beautiful. She looked so unreal. Its really fucked up but fortunately not all of them are like that.
True as a filipino i experience it too one of my friends aunt called me negra although I only have a tan skin only when my skin slowly turn white due to the pandemic and I stayed at home for 2 year's people even my praised me for finally having white skin
Its “pretty privilege”, and then “classism”, “high ego”, and “high status”, *because* of said pretty privilege and beauty standards, aswell as those of standards, that have existed throughout history. And the ones with the “pretty”-“pass” will, in thinking highly of themselves, because they’re more liked (their “beauty” features are more liked), will form a clique-class of their own, so basically, narcissism and self-love when complimented and self-accepted, by said toxic standards.
Im a goth artist, But I still draw POC characters bruh. It's not hard, it's a skill issue if you can't draw poc in your style. Granted I've watched kooleeen, Inspired me for a while but their tutorials always fell so flat for me, the generic asian/white faces primarily all looking the same, you could pull two different female portraits off her insta and i'd say thats the same woman. No hate towards her but if you aint creative enough or too lazy to draw someone with melanin just say that- Well I mean she kinda did with her actions but of well. fine example Goth is stereotypically shown as pale asf people (im one to talk) dressed in all black n leather. ignoring there are several sub genre's of goth and that even if thats our fashion preference we do not wear it all the time. and yes there are POC goths who are amazing and beautiful and deserve as much love. Just gonna say it, this ones a yikes for me as it just shows me artists who think like this, talk like this and create so lazily aren't really passionate, they just want a buck. Fair we all want a buck in this economy...but at least have some will to improve.
also for the 'anime' argument....uhm BOONDOCKS IS A THING. Black dynamite is also a thing. they are both anime/ anime like. granted neither are my personal taste, as im more into fantasy but both accomplish anime like styles while keeps POC features present with out it looking goofy.
exactly, like why tf all the men she draws look exactly the same, snow-skinned with asian features. obviously im not saying these things are wrong but that's the 99% of stuff she draws, like cmon, black and poc people exist.
@@michiic0la I mean like I said goth artist, some of my characters are on the pale side , but a good handful are tan-poc as well and I have no issues drawing them. Sure my anatomy is still a bit wonky but im still making a conscious effort as a writer and artist to learn and grow in those areas. theres defiantly a difference between drawing only a few poc because you dont feel skilled enough to draw them as accurately Vs not trying in general and making questionable statements. what kooleen draws honestly is easy and 'safe' because you see that vanilla shit all the time. random pretty anime girl/guy in a generic pose with no or minimal background. Not to shame her or anyone else who draws it, but at least add some spice and flare.
@@vampybyte7812 agreed. also she says "I don't draw ugly people because it doesnt get me likes on social media" and then 99% of her art being white people is extremely suspicious lol
I also feel this “black people are so hard to portray😣☹” comes from whiteness being the default in a lot of the media and art that we see,so we see so many references and features that represent whiteness that we find it easier to portray them then black people. But still,we’re not that hard to draw.
I genuinely don't get the problems with drawing people of colour, unless you're just being racist story wise/etc which is REALLY easy to avoid. If anybody finds it a problem anyways, thats a problem with their artistic abilities which they should improve by just learning different shape body features, hair, face and bam. wow that was easy wasn't it?
I've wanted to draw more black people, but the problem is when begins try to do it because of all the pressure to do it, they get called racist for doing it wrong or something so it scares people off. I know there's cases of legitimate racism, but it's getting stupid.
@@HyatWyat i found it helps lift the pressure to keep it in your personal sketchbook Share your art with the world when you're ready Also, drawing black people is really easy once you stop being scared of different features You got this!!
So tired of the “well she can draw what she wants comments”. You can draw one type of person if you want but you can’t TEACH people “the right way” if you yourself can’t even draw in flexible ways. You can not teach if you can’t even practice outside of your norm. Her comments along with her lack of basic knowledge and the fact that she has an audience means people are well within their rights to criticise. You can’t teach “right ways” if they’re clearly biased. Her art lack basic fundamentals while she criticises real life proportions as unattractive and incorrect. The problem is she is not someone people should be learning from and her attitude to making mistakes reflects that she does not care. She doesn’t care because she can just delete the clip, she won’t draw dark POC or ethnic features because “she doesn’t draw ugly people” and it “doesn’t get attention”, and the latter (which she has said) is just blatantly untrue! Most popular artists draw BIPOC and get a lot of support. Kooleen, it’s ok if you can’t draw black people or different features, but you as an artist should want to branch out. Your art is stiff because you draw husks (all exterior no depth) and refuse to listen to people. *You can not teach if you can’t even LEARN*
Kooleen literally stated that people shouldn't fully adapt to her art style and should rather develop one on their own. Your comment just makes me feel like you became a hater just because you watched one video. Plus who is to control what artist draw? Like if I told you to draw other things rather than eyes or stick figures, would you struggle? Of course you would because it is hard to change your art style. And just because her current art style doesn't include diversity doesn't mean it won't in the future. P.S. kooleen drew Michael O,Hara so my point is fully proven.
@@ok-ro7kx your reply literally just proves the OP's comment even more lmfao. Yeah sure, Kooleen may have stated that people shouldn't fully adapt to her style but you forget that 2M (?) are still subscribed to her and most are probably beginner artists who look up to her art style and follow her tutorial. Not to mention, the way she presented the correction itself is just blatantly disrespectful to POC as well. Gurlie literally wrote "Gorilla mf" next to the side profile she deemed as 'ugly' just because the facial structure doesn't fit her art style. Before you defend her and deflect rightful concerns about her actions, please look into how Koolen presented it first and how harmful it is for a UA-camr that has a huge following to showcase that "Hey no, this is the RIGHT way to draw this side profile cause the other one is ugly and looks like a gorilla mf" when she knows fully well that her audience is diverse.
im so sick of her blatantly racist fans!! i just saw someone who's white knighting her say this (im gonna copy and paste): "i would imagine this is why she doesnt draw POC. because no matter what, this is how you guys are going to react." her and her fanbase are so ridiculous, ignorant, and racist. they keep babying her because she's asian and that she "doesnt know" how black people look like, but it's so dumb cuz she's filipino, and some filipinos have black ancestry. im so upset with kooleen. i wish she could apologize to us instead of hiding. it's so offensive, and not something to sweep under the rug
being at her big age and pretending like black people are beyond her area of expertise is so dumb, just learn LMFAO but every youtuber is going to have some goofy ass fans defending their favorite creator simply because they feel like an attack on their fav is an attack on them.
I am 21 year old Turkish woman and I hardly ever see black people here, only in touristic places. I still know what edges are. I still know how black people look and how their side profiles can look like. We live in the time of social media. She has no excuse
What makes that comment more ignorant and quite frankly stupid too is it’s basically classifying East Asians as non “people of colour” soo what are they? 🤣 up till now I thought they were going by American’s standard of the term. I guess they aren’t?
As a Filipino, I am pissed. Considering she's Filipino, damn. Some of us are "gorilla looking mfs" apparently. And we are not all pale or white. A lot of us are morena, tan. In fact a lot of us try to achieve "white Filipino" but fail because its our natural skin. An asian stereotyping asians feels... strange. (Edit: Woah why is a defender replying to this comment so much...)
You do realize that she isn't talking about real life people right? Its how her art style is layered out in the basis of the drawing yet you somehow found anger in that. She also blatantly made it so the entire process was sarcastic. And if you're thinking she still shouldn't be teaching this. SHE LITERALLY SAID TO FIND YOUR OWN UNIQUE ART STYLE.
@@ok-ro7kx Your reply is pathetically pointless, you're just repeating what she have already said exactly, which she uses as an excuse The Gorilla comment was unnecessary & there is no excuse for that, & if you're defending even when knowing that, then you need some help, she could've just made the tutorial without putting such sensitive text, but no instead of avoiding that, she decided to go overboard with her jokes, her fans are the worst & you're no exception, this will influence & justify her fans to make fan & jokes of people who has such features or art styles similar to that, it's rude
@@xXVibrantSnowXx how is it rude to insult her own failures in art. She clearly said it was "gorilla looking" because it doesn't match with her art style. The original video was also supposed to teach how to draw in her style so honestly you're complaining about someone joking and insulting their own art.
Not just annoying, but I thought she just too harsh on other people's artwork and calling it ugly too much or "STOP." with red pointers. I get that people really sent their artwork criticize by Kooleen, even though I hope people aren't taking their criticism too seriously as advice or discouraged. I honestly hate the type of people like her who just 'criticize' people's artwork just because it's not identical to their art style, then take another extra steps by making fun of it and change their art style completely sometimes. Another thing I see commonly is non-black 'popular' people called afro hair style like for example, afro puff buns; 'silly' hair. I'm not black myself (I'm asian), but it just leaves me distasteful and it never crossed my mind to call it 'silly' hair.
EXACLTY THIS OH MY GOD I never liked roasting videos bc solar sands just ruined shit for me BUT like the way she doesn't even HAVE the skill set to be talking when she's doing the "roasting your art" bs like I'm genuinely tired or the "mean but 🤪 I'm an artist" persona it just gives me an ick if the skill set doesn't match up with the roasts they give/dish out Like the only person I genuinely can think of that does the roasting well is Ethan Becker who literally has actually good tips and criticism like he isn't mean about it and you just KNOW it's all in good laughs With kooleen though- Genuinely some of the roasting was a bit too much even for some that were beginner artists like it can really damage young impressionable kids I think about that one time she "roasted" this person's commissions prices and the art saying it was bad and that it should be a dollar and I can't exactly remember much but I'll find the video and list it later (mind you the original price was 3 dollars and in the anime 2000s style BUT GENUINELY so good like should of been more then 3 dollars imo) Point is like it just rubbed me the wrong way tbh and like I get it that ppl tagged and WANTED to be roasted but all I'm saying is if it's an impressionable person and they wanted to get roasted it just still can damage their esteem begjnner or not (also once again FUCK solar sands and many yts who did that shit tho) Anywho if you made it to the end of this I had to retype this so many times 😭😭😭 BUT POINT IS YOUR SO RIGHT AND IM JUST AGREEING AND EXTENDING BC I genuinely hate ppl like that too it sucks she just needs to work more on her art if she wants to continue roasting and giving tips because staying comfortable in your stylized art will not cut it BUT HOPE I WASNT RUDE HERE!!!
THISSS but what mainly bugged me was the fact she sticks with the same type of art. Emotionless bland, pretty Asian / white people yet she’s giving criticism and roasting (from what I’ve seen) some pretty decent work from fans that only needed help with maybe the pose / anatomy? It’s just wtf Lol
The sad thing is that she doesnt even have the skillset to back up all her talk. Look at her drawing poses in perspective. She traces the pose and reference incorrectly. She doesnt even know how to put cylinders in perspective, but she’s giving new artists information on things she cant even do herself. And even her tutorials on simple things, like eyes dont even teach anything because she just doesnt have the understanding to teach WHY something the way it is
Imagine Kooleen does a video addressing the drama while doing a yassified speed paint of Hobie and not actually apologizing for any of the problematic things she said at all💀 Update: It looks like she apologized on her instagram, so it initially didn’t really reach anyone besides her loyal fans so that’s cool I guess 👀
i bet you that that “yassified” version is gonna remove most of his common black features/then make fun of those and then she’s gonna be like “oh sorry, I forgot I can’t do that no more”
Kooleen doesnt have to draw poc if she doesnt want to. But if youre going to make an art tutorial on drawing humans…it might be helpful to be updated on general human anatomy. Of ALL humans.
No, her style is based on manhwa and her tutorial was based on the traditonal style vs. the many offshoots and more stylized examples. If they want a different look they'll go somewhere else. I can't tell you how many stylized artists I've seen tell people they're drawing something wrong because it's not the same or something they'd like. It has nothing to do with race.
@@onionjuiceinc.7702can you not draw POC in the manwha style? Like, if she believes that she has enough knowledge on the subject to teach people the basics, then shouldn't she also have the skills to draw people not normally depicted in manwha IN that art style as a demonstration of her understanding? It's one thing if you simply don't draw a lot of POC characters, but it's another thing entirely to actively mock their traits, consider those physical traits "incorrect" in that art style, and consider entire groups of people incompatible with a certain art style. If you want to teach people the basics, the basics include being able to drop a variety of people in that art style.
Honestly, the best kind of art advice is the advice that you can apply REGARDLESS of what kind of style you have. It doesn't matter if it's anime, semi-realism, or whatever unique, complex or simple it is. Art advice that strengthens your basics and grounds that so that you can apply their advice to ur style better. I've always been so confused why, kooleen had so many followers (I guess she just has the style a lot of young artists want to go for?). I look at art youtubers such as Mark Brunet, REIQ, Sinix Design, Ethan Becker, Proko, Kay Okayed, Robert Laszlo Kiss, and more (including non-art youtubers of course) and they really teach you the process step by step, even if it just the basics, it's helped so many artists out there, beginner or not, the entire range. If you wanna get better, it's going to take time, and kooleens videos aren't of that quality. Those guys are. If you want feedback and in depth stuff on how to draw and your work, get an art course, but most of the free stuff here is really, really good. I hope more artists will look at their stuff, especially if you want to improve correctly and more openly so that you can draw a lot of things (or whatever you want which could be everything too)!!
This is such a good comment, I especially love the fact that some of the UA-camrs you listed are a few of my recommendations too !! I personally never really took Kooleen as my taste but they clearly know how to work the algorithm and produce quick and easy content that UA-cam just loves being fed.
EXACLTY this!!! Also like you just get really limited later on if you only just draw the anime type of style I've been through that and it genuinely sucks also because at the time art UA-cam did not have any good art tips 😭 in 2013 like not too much intermediate things yk? But point is SO TRUE FOR THIS COMMENT!!
Oh !! same thoughts here . I could only enjoy her content up to a while till I got fed up since it barely helped me . Proko is one of my favourite youtubers too they really break down art and simplify it so that regardless of what art style your going for it helps you improve
Her excuse to the backlash before the gorilla clip was found was 'I was just trying to draw in my manhwa style".. never had something bothered me so much. Do people of color not deserve to be drawn and represented in your manhwa style? (Edit: She made ANOTHER video not addressing the issue. I hope y'all know who your defending because it's NOT looking good for her.) (Edit: Also, everyone keeps repeating themselves, saying the same argument, so I'll just say this here. It's not wrong for her to draw what she pleases, she has free will. I'm not saying that she has to draw ethnic features constantly to be considered an artist. In her free time she can draw whatever she desires. However, she must fulfill a number of responsibilities as someone with a 2.07 MILLION following. People hate to admit it, but the way you conduct yourself must change the larger you get, you can’t just stay ignorant forever lest you give your audience ignorant advice. And as expressed in this video, her advice is very... lacking. If her tutorials were intended to be 'helpful', she should have demonstrated that by providing several examples (of ethnic features), and yet she didn't. She just decided it was better if she gave vauge advice, and hope that everybody following those tutorials would figure it out themselves. The fact that she doesn't draw people of color will frustrate her audience that are of a different race, and I can say that becuase I've been struggling with her tutorials for years. )
I have a similar manhwa style. It is not difficult to stylize black features if you know how to draw them. Just because its a korean artstyle doesnt mean you have to draw the same. manhwa styles (when done right) shade darker skin beautifully because reflect ambient light beautifully, and black features really highlight the artists skill in stylization. the only thing stopping Kooleen is the fact that she doesnt want to, and because she doesnt want to, she doesnt know how.
The key points of manhwa style is the exaggerated long eyes and lips. Nose size face shape etc truly isn’t even a big deal. It shows her lack of skills at even analyzing her own style she’s doing. This just makes me want to pull out my tablet from retirement.
As if there aren’t plenty of Asians with dark skintones. Don’t act like it’s just that you’re only depicting one region meanwhile you’re cherry-picking their ethnic features.
I am a 16 year old artist who loves to add diversity, I used to watch kooleens content and it always never clicked to me that she never drew POC. I sometime put videos on my TV as sound background, but I always want to learn about POC, mainly the hair types and features. I never really found her tutorials that useful honestly since they all looked the same. Edit: the likes are insane thank u!!!
as someone with a weeb ass art style the "it's just anime style" comment is genuinely so annoying when (although scarce) there ARE examples of black anime characters that look black (Dorothy from Great Pretender, Maine from Cyberpunk Edgerunners, most if not all black pokemon trainers specially Scarlet and Violet's Ryme and her sister's) literally just an excuse for cookie cutter stylization lmfaooo 😭plus I never understood why it's so hard for people to use irl references like??? I'm white and I never struggled with drawing more textured hair, nor shading much darker skintones, it's so asinine honestly
Lol exactly. You know it’s an excuse. I must also highlight, don’t think this is exclusive to black people either. Cause people like this, they never draw south Asians either that have darker skin and thicker lips. It’s always East Asians or white with “East Asian” features. They just do not like/have lowkey racism when it comes to people outside of that standard. You don’t have to draw a a caricature of a black person just to show they are black. There’s black peoples with small noses, thin lips and thin noses as well. All of it is just an excuse
@@Criticalnin THIS!! EXACTLY plus paired up with the fact she "doesn't draw ugly people" has such god awful implications 😭. The appealing to the algorithm excuse doesn't make sense either when there are popular artists who draw more than pale white East Asians with eurocentric features. Skill issue on her end tbfh
There is somebody called "ok-jsomethingfuckingiforgot" and they're defending Koolaidleen on EVERY negative comment about her,and thats EXACTLY what they're saying☠️☠️ "wwwweellll thats just kooleens artstyle, she cant drawing those features, you dont even watch her videos!!1!1!1" like stfu..
@@numynum yes exactly thank you. I’m glad that people can read inbetween the lines. It exactly those “implications” I’m talking about. I had to break this down to someone else about what they said. Which was something along the lines of “some people don’t want to draw diverse. Majority of people just want to draw pretty people anyways” so there’s only two boxes. “Diverse” and “pretty” we ALL know what is meant by the term “diverse” so the implication is there when the other category is “pretty”. I don’t even need to say more. Hell, in another I explicitly referenced to the gorilla comments. Nothing else. And people responded to me like “WELL I ONLY DRAW X RACE DOES THAT MAKE ME RACIST” like.. huh… ? Thanks for sharing. But her fans, are defending this and it’s so embarrassing. I myself have watched videos of hers in the past and I couldn’t care less what race someone draws, we all know what look gets the most airtime. (Which speaks to something deeper but not the one we’re focusing on right now) especially in spaces that centre around anime/cartoon media. but it crosses a line that so many take in stride that someone will be so overt with their racism, some of which is internalized, they don’t acknowledge it just because they are a fan of their work. These people care more about people calling out problematic behavior for what it is than their fave ACTUALLY being problematic. Then again, majority of her fans are actual children. Which honestly just makes the “sexy mommy” shtick a lot weirder but anywaysssss I digress.
Sometimes I get the vibe that she doesn’t think beginners are a thing, especially at the part where she looks at a drawing of a potential beginner artist and says “wHeRe’S tHe jUiciNeSs??” Um, I’m sorry to shock you, but did you know that no one is born a master? Did you know that no one is naturally good at one thing at birth?
If Kooleen only wants to draw light skinned Asians that’s up to her, I’m not gonna go up to a black Artist and tell them to draw light skinned Hispanics or light skinned Asians. But, Kooleen is just weird for the gorilla comment and the other stuff. Like “what do you mean gorilla? Is that just… HUH?!” I can understand not really getting the thing with hair but the other stuff makes her seem very ignorant.
Put 2 and 2 together. Doesn’t draw darker skin people in general, or people with more thicker traits (black people aren’t the only ones to have these, for example, there’s south Asians and indigenous) + the gorilla comment. Do I even need to spell it out cause I think it’s pretty clear.
@@limpcheestbh maybe shes insecure? My characters have small noses too bc im insecure about mine and I feel like its more attractive to have a small nose. But yeah she shouldnt see her art as "the correct way"💀
Ikr. That always annoyed me about her tbh I could never sit through even 5 seconds of her videos without wanting to rip my hair out because of the word “smexy” :/
i also personally have a problem with her “revolutionary” eye tutorial because in the video she said not to draw almond eyes and almond eyes are ugly. i literally have almond eyes and so do alot of people. they are not ugly they are just a diffrent shape 😭😭
Almond eyes are objectively the perfect and balanced type of eye, but I guess she's just jealous of that and she wants to everyone to think her type of eyes and features are the most beautiful ones.
(Rant) I have hooded almond shaped eyes and i had one peraon say i was Asian fishing on a tiktok i did?? Just because i have hooded eyes!! No make up or anything! I have 12% east asin so not much at all.
So I'm a middle schooler and I'm a beginner artist. If you are going to create art tips, it should be something that everybody can apply to their art style. The fact that she called the right side profile "gorilla looking" is honestly pretty immature coming from her. AND she deleted the video, there is no coming back from that. She has to take responsibility, deleting it only does more damage. She has a lot of subscribers which means she has a lot of influence on the art community.
She's teaching people how to draw it in the more "manhwa" style since that's literally what the challenges are for and also why people are submitting their art to it in the first place. You guys are really skipping over some important detail.
Thank you for this video and this conversation. I think it's so important to call out non-Black POCs who exhibit racism. Not only are we not above criticism, but I think many Asian-Americans forget that a lot of Asian artists (specifically in music and entertainment) are being sensationalised as a result of appropriating a lot of Black creators' humour and vernaculars. I don't buy it for a second when they say they are using Internet language. They might have seen some catch phrases for the first time on the Internet but I can guarantee that the original posters of certain phrases were Black.
yes exactly!! people often think that only white people can be racist, when it simply just isnt true. anyone can be racist/exhibit racism, and more people should realize that.
@@kaitrbl the privilege is all mine! I can't wait for these conversations to expand. The topics are very sensitive in nature, and there are many who use whataboutism to distract from the original context, but you've built so much mental strength over the years with how harshly many have treated you. I can't think of a greater creator I want to hear more from!
There’s kinda more but in one of her “drawing your ocs” videos she chose to draw a character with acne. However, when she drew it she took it away. It kinda hurt me since I personally struggled with acne but I didn’t think much of it at the time. When she roasted tiktok art tutorials, I don’t believe she asked permission first since the tiktokers she chose we’re shocked she “roasted” them. In one of the hacks she “roasted” she didn’t even do it properly so someone on tiktok had to call her out for it. I know a lot of people dislike her and I do too, but I genuinely hope she’ll actually take accountability and learn and grow from this.
It definitely stung a bit for me too when she took away the acne on that one character. It's like implying that if you have acne you can't be considered pretty. :'( Even if she didn't have the intention of coming off that way, it definitely still hurt to see, lol. I hope she can take accountability and address all of this properly ,,
Im pretty sure i saw the acne vid, I saw someone in comments point it out how she didn’t draw it But then ended having it at the end at the final product of all the drawings? I cant really remember but im sure they said she added them at the end. But was shown for such a short amount of times. Still disappointed tho ngl
You’ll get less acne as you get older, but if you struggle with it you may want to consider using some treatment cream and to avoid heavy makeup (as it can clog the pores and lead to infections) I say this as someone who instead of treating it properly just tore open every pimple as a teen and now has some scars :p Don’t do that.
@@kathrineici9811 I don’t have acne anymore I’m actually getting treatment right now. It’s just back then when she posted the video, I had it and it made me feel more insecure.
This is one of the reasons I don’t like the art community. People are low-key to straight up racist and will freak out the moment you suggest drawing more diversity because it threatens their “creative freedom”
Except, no one’s entitled to ask an artist to draw “more diversity.” Don’t get me wrong, drawing people of different races and ethnicities is a good way to challenge yourself, but no one is entitled to suggest more diversity in someone’s art. I’m Asian, but I wouldn’t go up to a non-Asian artist and be like, “I want you to try and draw Asian people.” Y’know why? Because that’s weird as hell. I wouldn’t like it if some random person wanted me to draw “more diversity” because they want it. I would want to draw it because I want it, not some random person online. Are there actual racist artists who will freak out when asked for more diversity in their art? Yeah. But the majority of artists don’t freak out and usually decline because it’s their art in the first place. Overall, suggesting “more diversity” isn’t threatening creative freedom, but it’s annoying because artists just wanna draw what they want. That’s it.
@@themonarchofbaddecisionmak1405 I’m not saying it’s hard. I’m just saying that it’s weird as hell to go to an artist and suggest “more diversity.” Again, no one is entitled to tell you or another artist what to draw. Like I’ve said earlier as well, I am Asian but I wouldn’t go up to a non-Asian artist and ask them to “draw Asian people.” And yes, I do draw diverse characters with my anime art style in case you do ask me. I am very much still in the learning process though. Overall, it’s a matter on what an artist wants to draw. It’s just super annoying when random people online try to suggest or tell you what to draw because they’re not the ones drawing. That’s my overall thought. It’s just annoying when online strangers are asking you to draw something because there is that sense of entitlement that they should be able to tell you what to draw. If you want to draw poc, then that’s good. If people don’t want to, then that’s fine as well.
@@demonknight5617 I’ve been saying this shit but I always get back lash for it (I’m black) It’s forced rep if you’re adding rep to your art for the sake of having it and not because you want to
I never really watched Kooleen before, but i did learn a bit from their art. (I didn't use any of her tutorials. I did a art study on multiple different art styles i liked, including Koleens because I wanted to learn how to draw lips differently instead of just a line.) So to hear a artist I have actually learned from before say they're only making tutorials for other artist for money and nothing else is very disappointing. Not to mention I am half Puerto Rican and Half black, and have a strong jaw. I agree they aren't a horrible person and its I hope they learn from what people are saying, and take a effort to learn how to draw different features and people. Though, the fact they deleted a segment from their video that seemed problematic makes me think they'd rather double down, then actually take accountability. That being said, great video as always. Glad you're back!
can we talk about her copy cats tho. they all have the same art style, same cringey quirky humour, same tutorials that are like "draw circle, a straight line and then draw the rest" kind of bullshit, and they all only draw pretty white and (east) asian people.
OMG the copycats UR SO REAL FOR THIS I also don't like them 💀💀💀 like hey are just as annoying as kooleen idc and their tutorials are giving 2016 art UA-cam 😭 doing "do this not that!"
the people that try to copy her are so obvious that its cringe. but I think you don't have to draw diverse people if you don't want to, and you can draw pretty people if you want to, because to be honest people like to draw good looking characters more. like some people draw only white people and that's fine, and some people draw only black people and that's fine.
@@michaeldai8717want you to reread what you said and think about it for a bit. “I don’t think you have to draw diverse people if you don’t want to and you can draw pretty people if you want to” you’re putting diverse, (black, and basically anyone non-white/East Asian) and “pretty” in two boxes here. As if to say, one cannot be pretty if they are “diverse” what further proves this is when you go on to say “cause to be honest people like to draw good looking characters more” by going on to use an example of some only like to draw white…. so the only characters that can look good/are pretty are white/East Asian? Cause that is what your statement is saying. Think about your your words more, I get that you were trying to probably trying to be nice, but your comment reads as thinly veiled racism. I’m not saying that you are racist, but when broken down, that’s what your comment basically is reading like. Especially when it’s on a topic of a UA-cam referring to black traits as “gorilla” like.
@@Criticalnin i wasn't talking about how the only diverse people are black and non white and asian people bruh. i meant drawing more than one race. and I never said white people and asian people are pretty while black people aren't., I was talking about people who are pretty in general, because people are commenting how kooleen doesn't draw ugly people. and I'm not racist. also white people and asian people are diverse as well.
@@michaeldai8717 yeah asian people are diversed yet I don't see kooleen drawing Indians, Middle Easterns, Malays, Indos, Javanese, heck even Filipinos her own race.
After some thorough thinking, I can no longer be nice about kooleen. Her criticism is no where near as helpful as she or her fans are making it seem. If I have to hear ' juicy lips this, juicy lips that" one more time, I'm gonna scream. Her humor is annoying, and it seems like artists I used to enjoy started using similar formulas to Kooleen and it's just-....ugh. It's lowkey why I stopped following samdoesarts too to be for real.
Her criticism isn't meant to be helpful oml, she clearly has made it a joke throughout her videos. And if you don't like it THEN leave and don't unnecessarily hate on her.
Yeah this just pains me to no avail. It sucks that the person sent her their work went to her in first place when she has drawn like one black person in her life. I made a tutorial on how to render dark skin just in case anyone needed it. It goes in depth and I myself am a dark skin girl who had to get help from people who didn’t know how to do it themselves until I learned to do it on my own😊
As an half East Asian (Mongolian) half Latin American (Mayan) artist, her words would have broke me while I was younger. Her saying those things about people who are primarily South Asian, African, and Native/Latin American are ‘ugly’ and have ‘gorilla looking jawlines’ would have further hurt my self esteem as a young kid who really liked drawing all types of faces. Especially since I have a ‘gorilla’ looking jaw according to Kooleen. And hearing that from someone as big, popular, and influential as her, would have led me to believe that I was ugly and wrong. And so was my art, I also find her tutorials extremely unhelpful, all they give is a surface level understanding that even as someone who has been drawing for their entire life doesn’t understand. Curly hair or other ethnic features are not hard to learn to draw. All it takes is to STUDY, look at people with curly hair or more prominent jawlines. They are beautiful to study and learn about. To see another Asian/POC say this about other POC’s features is disgusting. Instead of teaching “I don’t draw ugly people” they should be teaching themselves about other people’s features and not solely pale skinned people with Euro-centric features.
Funnily enough, sam does draw people of colour ((he drew miles too and it was quite accurate I think)) But comparing Sam to kooleen is so funny to me. One is encouraging artists to learn the fundamentals of art and the other one gives lazy and unfunny tutorials But that's just my opinion 🤷♀️
I didn't even know Sam could draw male characters. A lot of people have been criticizing him for not only having same face syndrome but also only using the same skin tone
I’m primarily a 3D artist and let me say sculpting 4C hair is very hard, but I’m still learning how to because I recognize that black characters should exist in all media. I’ve had to teach myself how to make cornrows because you just can’t find tutorials for black hair online. If me and my classmates can teach ourselves how to include ethnic features within a harder medium she can learn how to draw them.
I FUCKING GIVE UP! I have been following her tutorials and now I find out this problematic stuff This shit happens every time I like a youtube artist GODDAMMIT!
Kooleen is that one person that is not really upsetting me but dissapointing me. She has the most soothing voice basically and then she is that problematic or has such annoying jokes/Humor Sometimes. Like she is just cringe atp girl use your soothing ahh voice for some good shit like mukbang or art commentary/art storytime.
Aka I’m black- there’s nothing wrong with her not making POC ocs it’s not a requirement in art. I’m black and I only draw black girls strictly kooleens doing the same and of course her art advice surrounds that as well. And yes she should educate herself I think all artists should bc she’s not the only one.
she doesn't HAVE TO make anything, but she should be able characters of different races/ethnic features. ESPECIALLY if she's going to be making "critiquing" and "fix it" art. otherwise her art is pretty much one-dimensional
I wish black people would stop taking thinly veiled racism and putting up with it/excusing it. Girl she called black traits gorilla like. She’s spreading that idea/mindset to other artists out there. Some who are very young and impressionable. Remember that racism is taught.
She has said much stuff that just shows she can’t be trusted as a popular artist, referencing to black lips as sausage lips, edges as extra eyebrows, referring to a face shape that is very common very black people as “gorilla lookin”, “fixing” art of black characters by white washing their features, while also not being able to draw some ethnical features. Then of course saying she doesn’t draw “ugly” things and then not drawing ethnical features which shows she sees them as ugly… Her art is rooted in racism.
As a Filipino, she unfortunately fits most of the criteria for the type of artists here in the Philippines. Highly privileged, cringy but can’t be called out for it because they are not “poor” (per the standards of what it means to be a poor artist, aka not having the financial backing of your rich parents), colorist but cannot be called out for it because “they have dark-skinned friends!!!1!1!!” and get off to their superiority complex, as well as look down on others that do not have the same style as her, but also complain about how everyone does not draw like her. I personally found her videos off, even attempted one when I was trying to divert to digital art as a way to keep up with the trends. But I cannot stress enough how rampant the colorism is in here. Most Filipinos choose to sweep it under the rug because that is what they have been taught to do for generations and to think that I did not realize that she is Filipino until now may allude to the fact that she wants everyone to perceive her as white or white-passing. Which is also another problem in here. It all comes full circle but she was dumb enough to delete the video and not address it. I honestly wonder how her ancestors feel about this.
not true becauseit has nothing to do with race. She has darker skinned characters so what are you even upset about? Most manhwa styles primarily stick to more eastern asian features rather than ethnically accurate ones.
She’d be an awful doctor because she shows an unwillingness to admit her own wrongs. She’s arrogant and it’s sad. And hospitals/residency programs aren’t looking for money hungry, arrogant or ignorant doctors anymore. It’s been shown to put the patients in danger, which puts the hospital in danger.
not to mention how she called a drawing of anya from spy family she did "smeggsy" 😭😭im not sure if it was targeted at anya or the drawing itself but its still weird and unfunny either way
She followed it up with "anyussy" basically referring to a child's privates. It was my first introduction to her and I've steered clear since cos that is not my sense of humour at all lol.
thank god someone is talking about the gorilla thing as a person who has a face like that and has been discriminated of there facial structure from other black people and seeing that “tutorial “ really hurts cause that’s my facial structure? and to change the face of a blk person is weird . her style is really good but stereotypical and the jokes are so hard to watch that even if her tutorials were good her art would still be stereotypical let’s be honest not every person looks like this things i don’t like with her art is how bland it is it’s good coloring that looks bland when u see art you shouldn’t feel bored art is meant to she emotion even if they are meant to be bland it they normally have meaning. the “ugly people “ thing is disgusting cause she only draws stereotypical people . the star boy thing is weird to me cause the creator is blk but maybe it was a trend . but to make this shorter she needs to draw more poc , darker skin people and yk , she needs to make an apology for the weird things she did instead of trying to cover it up like she did with the gorilla statement sorry this is long ik no one is going to read all of this but this is my opinion on her
I still remember when my art teacher told me the *exact* opposite of what Koolen "taught". My teacher encouraged me to do what she called as "gorilla mf" as some Sundanese have that feature as well and that isn't even an "ugly" facial feature he said.
Speacking as a poc and a artist, I never trully cared when artist didn't make black caracters, or choose to draw only one type of people. Art is both a form of expression and a marketing. Many choose to make their business about drawing only girls, boys, asian characters, black characters, etc. And as much as i think is limiting, i also think is fine. At the end of the day, their art is their business. About Kooleen. I always saw her work as most sarcastic, and never took what she said seriously. Is clear to me, she isnt trying to teach anything. But seeing those clips, i can see the problematic undertone she is sharing. I dont think she meant with bad intentions. The way i see it, she didnt even took into consideration racial features, since she only draw anime characters. When she say "ugly people" i imagine she means non anime characters I think is valid to call out if the behaviour caused pain to people, but i also think is the sort of situations that maybe people might seeing more than it actually is. I am not a fan of her and I dont think she is above criticism. I am just saying all this how i interpreted her work, both as a artist and poc: is fine, but don't take it too seriously. Ps: i think she should adress those criticisms sooner rather than later. It isnt baseless, and she should explain her side and be more careful in the future. The fact she deleted the clip is a good way to prevent the damage to get worse
Honestly I don’t really think “I draw ugly people” and “oh I just sell out” is serious, she holds a persona in her videos. Also, her art style is manhwa, which is a culmination of the Korean beauty standard (jaw, wide eyes, etc). Unfortunately said beauty standard is very colorist and ignores people who don’t fit the standard. Personally I don’t have a manhwa artstyle but it’s imperative that people step out of their comfort zones and at least understand to draw different people instead of hyper focusing on a specific group
To add on to this, I think she’s only calling “ugly people” as a general word for a joke. After all, most techniques in art is about de-emphasizing certain traits that are deemed unattractive or not satisfying which is a universal thing. Its harder to draw intentionally ugly art rather than pretty ones which is what the joke is mostly based on. There’s a on-hoing joke about anime people and fictional characters in general having unrealistic proportions and looks because they arent real and as such arent limited by what people think is unattractive and her on-going jokes are based off of that but in her sarcastic manner. It’s like a person joking about getting cancelled over the smallest hottake or streamers calling themselves billionares. Her jokes just tend to have very serious undertones and implicit messages that people can pick up on which is still a issue but far less criminal than what some people are thinking.
Thank you so much for voicing out my thoughts. I think that some of the people that are mad at her words are truly dragging it out way too much. They fail to recognize the nuance behind this situation is what I’m saying. Again, as a fellow poc, your insights are very much appreciated.
I completely agree with everything u say. And also it seems quite odd that when she made that gorilla comment that people were assuming that she was making fun of black people when she's just trying to be funny while explaining what looks good in a manhawa art style or anime art style when drawing a side profile and she's not wrong it does look better after she made the adjustments. Like people are getting wayyy too offended by things they just assume.
Solar sands being a big figure in the “deviant art cringe” era of UA-cam saying this shit when the context is racism and erasing ethnic features is SOOOOO funny he’s insane
Yeah man I actually liked Him because He changed his content, he doesnt do the art criticism anymore. Really disappointing to see that he still has these weird views yk
I remember trying to watch her tutorials b/c I saw how she was popular so I thought she was a good tool. I was very wrong and I couldnt stand her voice feeling forced? and odd humor? There are so many better and underrated art tutorials than her. (btw really enjoyed this video it is the first ive seen from your channel!)
she always had a weird bad vibe about her that i wasn't really into, and her "tutorials" feel more like entertainment than educational tbh. thanks for bringing this up. also,,,, "smegsie"??? cant help but cringe, she's just unfunny 🤦
Agreed with all of your points! As an asian artist, i also want to add that a lot of the characters this artist draws reflect a more korean beauty standard which centers “attractiveness” on euro-centric features anyway. A lot of asians don’t naturally possess these features (blue/green eyes, double eyelids, curly lashes etc). Some do, but a lot don’t.
@@aemorphism user is “ keaggx “ they don’t have much videos so no need to scroll the thumbnail shows skin , it doesn’t show the finished product cause idk where the video is but it was orange she did call pale Ish grey skin “tan “ which is weird it self
When you mentioned Kooleen trying to draw Miles or Hobie made me laugh because I think she'd tear up while drawing Hobie's wicks, just sweat dripping down the face.
As a person who draws occasionally (and is black), my worst nightmare is trying to draw a black character but having them look unnatural/not black. But that’s why I try to learn, and watch a bunch of different artists and tutorials, especially ones that aren’t just focused on one race in particular and go over the fundamentals too. Basically, at least I’m trying to learn how and not just slide it under the rug as a skill I can’t master, Kooleen has no excuse💀
Okay the best advice is to draw from real life people! Or get a lot of references of black people and draw them over and over again! Observe their features! You'll eventually have the muscle memory for it.
Well I'm kind of confused now- I draw POC characters but I have more of a cartoonish style. I never really thought that it was a problem until this came up and I don't want it to seem as if I'm being Racist or Offensive because of how I draw my characters. I'm not talking about your comment I'm just speaking in general. Do you have any advice for how I can draw POC characters in my cartoonish style without making it seem racist?
@@MattLovesMyChem Its a nickname my friends gave me because I like Salamanders. Also Thank god. Its hard finding people with a cartoonish and realistic artstyle who has the same problem. I don't see how people make it look so easy even when I watch tutorials It still seems a bit hard.
When I made that twt thread I wouldn't've guessed that it'd be seen by so many people but I'm so glad that it blew up and many people got to see it. We shouldn't let shit like this slide. She's trying to wait for people's rage to die down, which is why she has been posting her regular stuff while ignoring our comments. The worst part is that she has such an influence over 11-14 y/os who see her as a flawless art goddess and now believe that such normal features are "wrong" and "ugly". They themselves could also be having those features.
Solar Sands used to make a lot of “DeviantArt Cringe” videos, when I was a beginner artist I stopped drawing for months because one of his videos made me feel bad about my own art progress. Most of my online friends stopped drawing and deleted their accounts because of his videos because they were scared of thousands of people shitting on their art.
as a THIRTEEN YEAR OLD artist who has about.. 9 ish years of experience, drawing black people is NOT hard. And this girl was full on racist and didnt think twice??? Yuck
I dont know why people watch her over other artists. There are amazing artists who do the same thing as koleen (tutorials, roasting/fixing, ect) and still include non pale poc+black ppl AND actually HELP!! They give ACTUAL tips that arent specific to one style. And in the fixing videos, they don't completely change the style, they actually just fix and explain the problem with the proportions/pose and give good tips!! I cant name them on the spot because usually i see them on my yt shorts but I see a ton of people like that. And they dont say smexy and juicy every two seconds, so thats a plus. (This is as a middle schooler 💀)
I personally, as a young 9th grade “artist” who focuses on realism, love to watch Scott Christian Sava. He’s nice and does fantastic art! And sense the topic of this video is about how they are being inclusive or diverse, I feel that I should mention that he draws tons of different people…trans, Muslim, black, lgbt, ect.
@@hayhay3332 omg definitely. Hes a huge inspiration for me despite out styles being so different. Hes super positive in alot of his videos and they definitely give me more motivation to actually work on smth
You should really try stepping in her shoes for a moment. Like either way, if she deleted the video, apologized or not, SHES STILL GONNA HAVE BACKLASH. She's not a bad person for aiming for a life of clout. Should I call you a greedy avaricious person just because you earn some money? If you find her annoying just don't watch her content. Simple as that. Yet you chose to hate on her just because you don't like her attitude.
@@daysofcandy000 you're reading this comment currently which tells me you also have multiple opinions. If I can't reply to comments why should you be able to read every single one?
Though she only used the same face shape and features, yknow good for her. But it turns into a problem when she dives into criticizing faces, she just shouldnt at all, its like asking someone who only knows how to draw blocks and ask them how to draw a sphere,
Exactly, if she knew this is a drawing of a black person, don’t freaking go there. Just do slight adjustments and fixes. But she just doesn’t have the skill or judgment to do that.
It's not only POC characters that kooleen is avoiding to draw, it's also features like wrinkles, blemishes, etc. She once "fixed" an artwork of someone's OC because that artist was looking for criticism. The OC had acne and what koleen did was draw it in her style and turned her acne into freckles instead to make her look "prettier". And as someone who has hormonal acne, I'm offended that she considers me ugly. Apparently wrinkles and dark skin is also ugly to her smh
The sad thing about the clip at 18:56, is that the art has some places for improvement that arent even addressed. the eyes and eyebrows are not lined up with the angle of the face, The ears are also disproportionate and on the incorrect angle. The shading is mostly pillow shading with no light source, making the image appear very flat. Another detail is the eyes and eyebrows are drawn from front on rather than side on, making it look a bit off. All of these are points that she could’ve chosen to fix. But instead she chooses to ‘fix’ the nose, chin and lips, all of which are ALREADY PROPORTIONATE. The fact that she didn’t recognise (or choose to) or address the actual drawbacks just shows she doesnt have the knowledge or skill to back her ‘roasts’ up. Knowing the basics of eurocentric facial anatomy from 3 angles (front, 3/4 and side) is not only stupid close-minded, but also just proves she only knows how to make her art aesthetic. And said ‘aesthetic’ doesn’t include anyone above the age of 25 or anyone with ethnic features. Or any dynamic pose or expression. Or even any mildly creative colour scheme or lighting.
kooleen has always given me bad vibes just from her voice and “fixing” videos (esp how she calls them “fixing your ugly art” when the art in the thumbnail is really good) even before i found out abt the racism stuff, nice to see it wasn’t just my brain being weird
Honestly before this video, I found her videos on shorts, I had an ick about her as this person grosses me out, etc but now should I be surprised that she is this bad person? Well, the way she speaks is very condescending but that is just my opinion.
even if she's being sarcastic and stuff I couldn't stand her at all. she acts like people need to follow her standard in order to draw "pretty people". like beginner artist will take that advice and damage their progress of art in a long term. it's one thing to only draw one type of face that you want to, but when you're a "tutorial" artist that give advices and roasts towards people, you atleast have to be good at drawing something that's out of your comfort zone.
never in my life would i thought solar sands would be so irrelevant that there are people who don't know the content that made him popular in the first place and I'm so happy about it. It feels like the art space has been refreshed
@salvatorecanwait so because I have a character who just so happens to be black (I didn't even take race into consideration when first designing her) who I've had since I was a child I'm a Twitter Savior. I don't even have Twitter.
I think this is what happens when you ignore your viewers criticism in which they keep telling you to add more diversity in your art and then when you see actual diversity art you flop everything up
Hi, first time watching your channel here, I'm shocked by the fact that you considered the foundation that many of these online "artists" lack and the fact that you mentioned composition and fundaments of anatomy. As someone who's taken art courses from the top art colleges internationally, I'm very impressed by this, as many people tend to neglect this and see art only from a superficial level that only takes in account for "Oh does it look generally pretty or not?" Quite frankly this puts you above many artists on tiktok who have millions of followers and likes, just because of the fact that they lack this piece of basic artistic knowledge.
she didn't respond for weeks because she thought people would forget about it and move on but that didn't happen, so just made this unbelieveably bad apology in five minutes and posted it on her instagram.. not on her twitter or on youtube as and actual apology video.
Can’t wait for Kooleen’s animated version of Spider-Man: ATSV! It will feature such characters like Miles Manhwa, Hobie the K-pop artist, Miguel the Smegsy Vampire, Peni Parker, Gwen: the love interest, and Pavitr: the cute sidekick. The story will follow these characters trying to stop Miguel from enforcing the scary gorilla side profile on to everyone! Can’t wait for it to be in theaters!!
Btw there's another clip that I have found-- the beginning of her "roasting tiktok tutorials 4". Unlike in her roasting your art vids, she xoesn't get consent to roast those tutorials and she mocks the painting of a poc's lips and calls them a sausage. She also continuously expresses how much she doesn't like the drawing. She then paints the same lip but thinner and with a pale skin tone and enjoys that version. The one on the tutorial and the one that she drew looked pretty much the same except that the original one had thicker lips and dark skin. When considering all her other clips, this one doesn't seem so good either
i tend to draw oringinal characters with lighter skin because I'm a traditional artist and don't shade super hard, but I've drawn POC characters with ethnic features in both the past as a beginner artist and now as a growing one. its not that hard to draw ethnic features no matter how realistic or cartoonish your style is
As someone who has drawn for years, I love drawing people of all different ethnic backgrounds because its fun and interesting. It tests your ability to observe and interpret features. I can't stand cookie cutter tutorials, they don't teach you how to observe. If you tried following her advice and applying it to a life drawing class, you are going to run into problems.
As a white person, I try to learn how to draw every skin tone because even if it would be “easier” to use myself as a model all the time and only draw white people because I’m familiar with the features, it wouldn’t take me far as an artist and I would rather be bad at drawing other skin tones in the start then to not draw them at all.
Kooleen is popular due to her delivery of content. I had a short period time of trying to learn a bit from her and her tutorials BUT they always felt kind of confusing to me and really vague. I don’t think consistently roasting people is a good way for people to improve without some kind of constructive criticism and tips. As and Artist I try to uplift and help artists by actually giving tips and explaining things in more depth the best that I can.
god, love the solarsands slander in this video lol. i was actually featured in one of his deviantart videos at the ripe old age of 11 years old! i was attacked on deviantart and tried to defend myself in the youtube comments of the video i was in, and was bullied into deactivating my account. not sure how me, at age 11, needed to be "criticized" when it just boiled down to him and others laughing at the wonky anatomy. either way, the kooleen situation is really funny. i see people in the comments defending her by going "i ALSO dont know how to draw black features!!!" ...then learn? kooleen purposefully doesnt learn and doesnt want to draw black features because she wants to draw "pretty people" and that's what the issue is, not that she doesn't know how to. theres more than enough tutorials out there that *anyone* could use. its up to you to learn how to draw those features.
Is he calling us volunteers now? LMAO. Basically when he was making his videos cringe culture was at its peak. It was a trend to make "DeviantArt Cringe" videos where the people making the videos would just scroll through a certain DeviantArt tag and make fun of (and "critic") the images and then use the worst they could find as the thumbnail. Everyone I've talked to that's also been in one of his videos didn't ask. The one I met who did ask said he purposefully used their old artwork instead of their newer artwork on their page, clearly just trying to showcase art he thought was bad and not to actually help the artists improve. Good luck on the video man! I can't wait for Solar Sands downfall lol
i watched one of kooleens “fixing art” videos and she was js straight up mocking someone’s art. she kept making comments abt how “weird” some parts looked (which i think she could’ve worded it way better.) i feel like there’s a different between constructive criticism and straight up mocking, but she was mocking the person’s artwork and trying to make it funny at the same time..??? i stopped watching her videos right there bc of her commentary on other ppls artworks.
I may be a white artist, but I swear I get so happy when I see people depicting Hobie the way he looks and not making his nose smaller (that’s a really common one) because his design is literal perfection and I just don’t understand why people would choose to change the features of characters because then it doesn’t even look like them anymore. Just makes me sad.
I just want to point out that a channel called Draw Like A Sir does exist and the tutorial is so good because he explains why everything is like that and how to diversify it, and he actually explains the fundamentals instead of just telling you to draw something without explaining why is any regard. He also strongly advises to do many other things and experiment wwith your art so you aren't stuck in the phase of drawing the same character forever like Kooleen. I definitely recommend watching his vids if you really want to know how to draw.
oh my GOD the solar sands jumpscare... i watched his videos when i was WAY too young to be watching his kind of content and it gave me a fear of posting art online for such a long time >_
I’m glad people are critiquing Koleens ignorance, I know beginner artists take awhile to get out of their comfort zone and start drawing other kinds of people, it took me awhile to start drawing POC and people with different body types because I was scared of doing it wrong and hurting someone’s feelings, and I feel like that’s common for beginners, but Koleens been doing this art for awhile and I think she’s advanced enough to start drawing other kind of people
I don't think she's racist. She just had a poor choice of words. But not going to lie, she lookin hella Guilty by deleting her video and not responding.
Fr, it kind of rubbed me the wrong way when she deleted the ethnical features of characters and then goes on in other videos that she doesn't draw ugly things
Honestly, drawing "ugly" people is good for you because it is hard to draw those professionally without making mistakes. Diversity is so important in improving art. Drawing only pretty people has damaged my art so much honestly, and now I am learning from the fundamentals again. I agree with your video. And yes, pretty people don't have pretty personality.
People who are trying to defend her keep making the same vague arguments like "we should consider the context" "she didn't mean it like that" , what did she mean by it then lol? She literally said if your lips and chin protrude from your nose, you're gorilla-looking. That's racist because black people have that feature commonly. Don't understand how she could mean it "in another way"?
Random coincidence, you mentioned Hobie while I was practicing drawing him. Ironically, I've only started practicing because I realised I do the exact same thing as Kooleen and erase ethnic features without realising seeing as generally when I stylise I don't draw noses, lips or chins in any clear ways. I'm slowly getting better at it though.
Man I loved watching her because she doesn't take things seriously. I do hope she address the criticism but I don't mind that she doesn't draw other poc much.

The correct term is "colorism".
As someone who’s a very diverse artist yet only having 5+ years of experience in digital drawing, drawing black people isn’t hard. It really isn’t.

*You can not teach if you can’t even LEARN*
god ur comment is perfectly explained and stated
“Doesn’t get attention” just wait until she comes into contact with Hobbie fans💀
I believe when your art is beautiful you will get attention but kooleen just wants money from her work in the most lazy way possible
@@ok-ro7kx your reply literally just proves the OP's comment even more lmfao.

Another thing I see commonly is non-black 'popular' people called afro hair style like for example, afro puff buns; 'silly' hair. I'm not black myself (I'm asian), but it just leaves me distasteful and it never crossed my mind to call it 'silly' hair.

Like the only person I genuinely can think of that does the roasting well is Ethan Becker who literally has actually good tips and criticism like he isn't mean about it and you just KNOW it's all in good laughs
With kooleen though-
Genuinely some of the roasting was a bit too much even for some that were beginner artists like it can really damage young impressionable kids I think about that one time she "roasted" this person's commissions prices and the art saying it was bad and that it should be a dollar and I can't exactly remember much but I'll find the video and list it later
(mind you the original price was 3 dollars and in the anime 2000s style BUT GENUINELY so good like should of been more then 3 dollars imo)
Point is like it just rubbed me the wrong way tbh and like I get it that ppl tagged and WANTED to be roasted but all I'm saying is if it's an impressionable person and they wanted to get roasted it just still can damage their esteem begjnner or not

@@onionjuiceinc.7702 doesn't give an excuse to wash out ethnic features and call them gorilla looking :3

Oh !! same thoughts here .
I hope y'all know who your defending because it's NOT looking good for her.)
(Edit: Also, everyone keeps repeating themselves, saying the same argument, so I'll just say this here.
The fact that she doesn't draw people of color will frustrate her audience that are of a different race, and I can say that becuase I've been struggling with her tutorials for years. )
im pretty sure there's manhwas with people of color in them too so that's not even an excuse
The thing abt that is, i read so many manhuas, mangas, and muhuas that dont follow that rule in the slightest
As if there aren’t plenty of Asians with dark skintones. Don’t act like it’s just that you’re only depicting one region meanwhile you’re cherry-picking their ethnic features.

Koleen won't ever get a job in the industry she just wants popularity from generic art.
You’ll get less acne as you get older, but if you struggle with it you may want to consider using some treatment cream and to avoid heavy makeup (as it can clog the pores and lead to infections)
I say this as someone who instead of treating it properly just tore open every pimple as a teen and now has some scars :p Don’t do that.
That’s it.
@@demonknight5617 it really isn’t that hard to draw other people, I’m sure drawing more diversity wouldn’t get in the way of drawing what you want
@@themonarchofbaddecisionmak1405 I’m not saying it’s hard. I’m just saying that it’s weird as hell to go to an artist and suggest “more diversity.” Again, no one is entitled to tell you or another artist what to draw.

Funnily enough, sam does draw people of colour ((he drew miles too and it was quite accurate I think))
But comparing Sam to kooleen is so funny to me. One is encouraging artists to learn the fundamentals of art and the other one gives lazy and unfunny tutorials

Then of course saying she doesn’t draw “ugly” things and then not drawing ethnical features which shows she sees them as ugly…
Her art is rooted in racism.

When she say "ugly people" i imagine she means non anime characters
I think is valid to call out if the behaviour caused pain to people, but i also think is the sort of situations that maybe people might seeing more than it actually is.
See, I think the problem isn’t that she’s not drawing poc, it’s that she’s teaching people that poc features are to be avoided.

And as someone who has hormonal acne, I'm offended that she considers me ugly. Apparently wrinkles and dark skin is also ugly to her smh
The sad thing about the clip at 18:56, is that the art has some places for improvement that arent even addressed.
the eyes and eyebrows are not lined up with the angle of the face,
The ears are also disproportionate and on the incorrect angle.
"I don't draw ugly people" Oh so you don't draw yourself because your personality is very ugly and unattractive.
I'm sorry if I come off rude, this person just overall sucks.
even if she's being sarcastic and stuff I couldn't stand her at all. she acts like people need to follow her standard in order to draw "pretty people". like beginner artist will take that advice and damage their progress of art in a long term. it's one thing to only draw one type of face that you want to, but when you're a "tutorial" artist that give advices and roasts towards people, you atleast have to be good at drawing something that's out of your comfort zone.
never in my life would i thought solar sands would be so irrelevant that there are people who don't know the content that made him popular in the first place and I'm so happy about it. It feels like the art space has been refreshed
All the things Kooleen has done can be explained with “this is what drawing the same thing all the time does to a mf”
One of the main characters in a story I am working on is a black woman...
She's also the literal goddess of beauty.
cooolll!!!
@@tabonlong I love her 🩷
im interested in knowing more about the story
@salvatorecanwait so because I have a character who just so happens to be black (I didn't even take race into consideration when first designing her) who I've had since I was a child I'm a Twitter Savior.
I don't even have Twitter.
good luck with the story !!
“unwarranted criticism” when theres a literal hashtag people voluntarily put their art there for kooleen to see
I think this is what happens when you ignore your viewers criticism in which they keep telling you to add more diversity in your art and then when you see actual diversity art you flop everything up
my thoughts exactly
Hi, first time watching your channel here, I'm shocked by the fact that you considered the foundation that many of these online "artists" lack and the fact that you mentioned composition and fundaments of anatomy. As someone who's taken art courses from the top art colleges internationally, I'm very impressed by this, as many people tend to neglect this and see art only from a superficial level that only takes in account for "Oh does it look generally pretty or not?" Quite frankly this puts you above many artists on tiktok who have millions of followers and likes, just because of the fact that they lack this piece of basic artistic knowledge.
damn.. Two Kooleens in drama rn. The toxic gossip train going wild fr🤡
I can't escape the toxic gossip train 😭
she didn't respond for weeks because she thought people would forget about it and move on but that didn't happen, so just made this unbelieveably bad apology in five minutes and posted it on her instagram.. not on her twitter or on youtube as and actual apology video.
right and she even blamed the people who were upset and basically said it was their own fault for being offended rather than owning up to anything 💀
I did not just get called a squishy bro
bro is not tapped in, only bitch ass niggas don't want to be squishies. i only run with sweeties and lovers bitch if you not that you don't belong fr
@@kaitrbl my fault fam 😔 I'm rethinking my choices rn
i tend to draw oringinal characters with lighter skin because I'm a traditional artist and don't shade super hard, but I've drawn POC characters with ethnic features in both the past as a beginner artist and now as a growing one. its not that hard to draw ethnic features no matter how realistic or cartoonish your style is
As someone who has drawn for years, I love drawing people of all different ethnic backgrounds because its fun and interesting.
As and Artist I try to uplift and help artists by actually giving tips and explaining things in more depth the best that I can.
god, love the solarsands slander in this video lol. i was actually featured in one of his deviantart videos at the ripe old age of 11 years old! i was attacked on deviantart and tried to defend myself in the youtube comments of the video i was in, and was bullied into deactivating my account. not sure how me, at age 11, needed to be "criticized" when it just boiled down to him and others laughing at the wonky anatomy.
either way, the kooleen situation is really funny. i see people in the comments defending her by going "i ALSO dont know how to draw black features!!!" ...then learn? kooleen purposefully doesnt learn and doesnt want to draw black features because she wants to draw "pretty people" and that's what the issue is, not that she doesn't know how to. theres more than enough tutorials out there that *anyone* could use. its up to you to learn how to draw those features.
oh you were one of his "volunteers"? LMFAOOO so sorry you went through that, I'll have some words for him in my part 2.
He did a lot of harm
I can't wait for Solar Sands downfall lol
it kinda hurt that she said "gorilla looking mf" cause my side profile looks like that, mind you im white but c'mon man 😭😭
i watched one of kooleens “fixing art” videos and she was js straight up mocking someone’s art. she kept making comments abt how “weird” some parts looked (which i think she could’ve worded it way better.) i feel like there’s a different between constructive criticism and straight up mocking, but she was mocking the person’s artwork and trying to make it funny at the same time..??? i stopped watching her videos right there bc of her commentary on other ppls artworks.
Fr, it kind of rubbed me the wrong way when she deleted the ethnical features of characters and then goes on in other videos that she doesn't draw ugly things
she's not a "burn the blacks/deport the aliens" racist, from what i've seen she has some major internalized racism
She Apologised
@@zhii999Ofc she did lol
i never took them seriously annnnd im kinda baffled how anyone would? i honestly thought kooleen was more of a meme page than tutorial page
I woke up early for an extra credit lecture, and I'm staying up for xzae 💞
Random coincidence, you mentioned Hobie while I was practicing drawing him. Ironically, I've only started practicing because I realised I do the exact same thing as Kooleen and erase ethnic features without realising seeing as generally when I stylise I don't draw noses, lips or chins in any clear ways. I'm slowly getting better at it though.
yo you have such a chill demeanor this vid was lowkey calming to listen to while drawing
ur cool, subscribing :3
Man I loved watching her because she doesn't take things seriously. I do hope she address the criticism but I don't mind that she doesn't draw other poc much.
