Long exposure photography opens up a world of questions and problems.
In this video, I’ll try and clear everything up for you and give you an easy process for creating beautiful long exposures.
The same rules apply, whether you are trying to get that foamy effect on water, glass effect on a lake, or car lights streaking through a cityscape.
I’ll also talk about camera settings, filters, and composition tips!
Enjoy!

Love using your hand instead of a filter. What a great tip. Thanks
The poor mans filter! 😂
Love the Lake sunset footage :)
Good tip about using your hand as an nd-grad !
haha, thanks mate glad you enjoyed it :)
That "handy" tip is AMAZING! Thank you for sharing, I'm all about anything that saves me a bit of cash 😊 Your explanations are also very clear and your voice is very soothing - thanks for the great content 🙏
My absolute pleasure. I’m somewhat passionate about people not spending cash on things they don’t need, or at least showing them a different approach to getting virtually the same results. I haven’t used a tripod for my landscape work in years, not any filters. Just a camera and a few lenses. Nice and simple! Thanks for supporting the channel :)
Beauty mate, clear and concise and I learn something valuable off your posts every time. Cheers 👍👍👍
Cheers, glad it helped mate 🙏🏻
I learned a lot Will.. Thanks heaps mate ❤❤❤
Cheers! Glad it helped 🙏🏻
That handy tip was a beudy William. Logical and I'm surprised at this self not thinking of that before. 😀
Absolutely brilliant thanks for sharing your knowledge
My pleasure. Thank you!
Brilliant Will, I just two graduated ND filters I have had with me for years 😅
I loved this teaching. Very well done and explained and demonstrated. You are very "punny" too and I laughed that you ended up saying little tips when your video was so educational.
Thanks so much! You will probably like the one I uploaded today then
😆
Awesome video ❤ brilliant photography ❤
Another great photography lesson video from the master.
Haha, thanks mate!! 😅🙏🏻
Love the tips and love the trick with your hand! Super!

Gussy Boy!! Thanks legend :)
Great tips. Glad your channel popped up, subscribed & ready to binge your videos😁
Amazing, thank you!!
Nice Centre column extension on the tripod mate 😝. Love long exposures man my favourite way to shoot.
I don’t use them often but when I do, it’s fully erect.
🤣🤣🤣🤣
Loads of information there, thanks Will.
Thanks mate 🙏🏻
Nice one William enjoyed your videoing spot on 😊
Cheers Graham 🙏🏻😊
Thanks for nice tips!
My pleasure. Thanks for viewing and commenting :)
"it's a 𝘩𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘺 👋🏽 tip" 😂💯! It is indeed & I'll definitely test that out!
😂😂 thank you! All the best with it 🤞🏻☺️
That was very informative. Particularly liked the tips on using the histogram versus doing the calculations. Also the hand tip was something new this video offered. Always fun to learn something new. Thanks!
Appreciate the support, thank you :)
Thanks for the great info Will! 👍
Legend, thanks Paul!
Excellent video.
Thanks Dale. Much appreciated.
Thank you so much I’ve never done long exposure before lots of handy tips you got a new sub
Thanks a lot! I hope you enjoy trying them soon :)
Nice production , very personable . Handy tip 😂
Glad you liked it!
Great video.... love a good tip!!! Thank you

This was a great. video. Gave me many ideas. Nice work.
Thank you Deb :)
Very helpful and clearly explained, Thank you !
My pleasure. thanks for the comment
Thank you for another valuable video Will. Your time and tips are very much appreciated, along with the downloads. I love the New Zealand rivers too, so that was also an enjoyable location to see for your demonstration.
Really appreciate it Caroline, thank you! ☺️🙏🏻
The lesser spotted tripod! Bangin tip! I have grads but for a Fiona reason (managed to wedge the filter holder onto the lens 🤣🙈) I’ll defo be using that 😃
I was disappointed in myself for using it lol
Some nice tips there. I hate using filters as a matter of fact I've stopped for a couple of years now 📷👍
cheers Eltin, thanks for watching!
I just wanna say i really enjoy and love your videos you explain everything in detail ; in different scenarios and the videos are not super long like other channels. Keep doing what you doing.
That means a lot, thank you!
I love your courses and approaches to photography. Concise, very insightful and useful tips! Thank you! btw, what’s the river’s name?
Thanks a lot! Hollyford river.
Awesome useful video. I'm keen to get back out there and try some of this. Thanks
Always appreciate it Leanne!
Clear and concise tutorial Will, great stuff. I found you via Vero and so glad I did. NZ what a place to call home...love it!
Awesome, thank you!
The poor man’s GND!! I use it all the time
Cheers that was very helpful , picked up on a few things I was doing wrong .
Glad it helped mate. Cheers 👊🏻
Hi Will . Enjoyed Zero to Hero . A great refresher course for me and an entirely different workflow ! Like you I use Bridge , ACR and Photoshop but your workflow does all the heavy lifting in ACR before even moving to Photoshop ! I'll give it a go . Nice to see you with a Tripod and Filters ! Always amazed at the slow speeds you can shoot handheld ...
Cheers Kevin, I appreciate the support and am stoked you enjoyed the course! Yep, had to dust off that gear just to make this video haha. Not part of my image making these days but my handheld workflow certainly isn’t achievable for everyone. Thanks for stopping by!
Very informative video. I use a variable ND filter and a wired remote shutter release for my long exposure images. The variable ND filter is very useful for this work.
Sure is. Thanks Dave.
Great video 👏👏👏👏
The only time a 5 second timer is needed IMO is really long focal lengths. My 100-400 even with a tripod leg is still settling after 2 seconds.
Cheers!
thats a real "handy" tip :D Absolutely using it!
Haha, thanks a lot! ☺️👊🏻
Cool tips. I'll see if I can try that out here in Canterbury. I can't believe how much snow has melted on the Southern Alps over the past week - the river water will be freezing cold. Only two weeks ago, the Alps looked like a Mr Whippy ice cream.
Thanks for viewing and commenting 😊 Yeah, not much snow left here in Fiordland. I think we’re in for another warm summer.
What about a variable ND filter, over separate ND’s with specific stops? And would an inexpensive variable ND be a good idea for beginners learning with using ND filters?
Variables can create some vignetting. Something like a 3 stop is handy for sure. I don’t use anything and just work with natural light and narrow apertures but having a 3-stop ND can help you get some slower speeds for sure :)
thank you for your insights into long exposure. To determine base shuttle speed, do I use aperture priority mode or manual mode?
Thanks. Use manual mode. Just check the light meter of even more accurate is the histogram. Check my video on that :)
Fantastic! Thank You!
My pleasure :)
Fantastic.
Many thanks!
Thanks heaps for the tips Will! Really well explained. Especially the hand tip! You mention in the video about some apps to assist with calculations. I was wondering which app you would recommend on Android phones, if you know any. Thanks in advance. Cheers, from Melbourne😊
Thank you ☺️ I can’t recommend any apps though sorry, as I don’t use them. Throw in long exposure calculator and I’m sure the higher rated ones are decent enough! Thanks for following the channel 🙏🏻🙏🏻
I’ve recently started trying ICM. I hope you do a video about it. 💙🖼
Funny enough I’ve done one! Should be posted in a couple of weeks ☺️😅
@@WilliamPatinoPhotography yay!! 👏👏👏💙
HA! So you do use a tripod after all!
Great content mate.
Haha, sometimes I gotta make it relatable for viewers when teaching
Just wondered if I could use a polarising filter instead of ND?
For sure. That will remove 2-stops of light. NDs will removed more, depending on the opacity. That will then allow for longer exposures but a polarised can definitely help. Or just do what I do and wait until the golden hour :)
Hi William! Can you tell me about Steady Shot. I don't have it on my 16-35
sony lense, but i have it on my camera Sony A7 III. Do i need to turn Steady Shot off on my camera if i take picture with long exposure?
No it’s fine to leave on in the camera. Just some of the older lenses needed it turned off in case the motor in the lens stabilised during the exposure and slightly creates vibration.
You explain everything very well! Thank you much. I want to buy the complete guide bundle, can I still get the promotion price? Last question, what tripod is this? 🙏🙏
Thanks Luiz! Yes you can still get that special price. The tripod is a Vanguard 265CB. Not sure if they still make that one but they have similar :)
@@WilliamPatinoPhotography Thank you so much brother. I found the tripos second version. Can you send me the link for the complete bundle? thanks again
2:57 You mention that there are ways to get around using a tripod... Would you be able to direct me to that video please?
Nevermind I found it... Storytime with Uncle Willy 😂
Haha, thanks. It's more covered in some of my online courses but I little hack you can try is simply shooting the landscape at a speed you know you can get it sharp, then doing a slower exposure for the water and then blend the two exposures together in post. Personally, I like speeds no longer than 1 second, and the camera I use has in-built stabilisation so I can get those speeds handheld no problem. Worth trying if you also have ibis on your camera.
@@WilliamPatinoPhotography Thanks for the insight!
Thanks Will! Can you explain any arguments for a 20 second exposure when not shooting astro? From watching your videos so far, I see you don’t usually only go as low as a second or two? I was experimenting at the beach this morning again with shutter speeds. It’s funny how you mentioned your early days of slow exposures, almost like a right of passage. I feel like I am seeing your point on speeding things up a bit more. Just curious if you have scenarios where you like a longer exposure of 20-30 or more seconds? I notice it does destroy the clouds and I didn’t like the look on the clouds above the pier today. Thanks.
Hey mate. Nope, unless you like blue hour or astro. I don't use a tripod and I like light, so no need for me to shoot long exposures at all. On very rare occasions I will shoot the aurora and that's the only time I dust off the tripod and need a long exposure. If I prefer a slower expo for water on a river and I can't get the image sharp handheld, then I shoot the frame sharp at my slowest possible speed and then take a seperate slower frame for the water, then blend in post. Hope that makes sense. It's all in my courses, if you've seen any of those .Cheers
@@WilliamPatinoPhotography thanks again!! Great stuff!
Great video. So after setting aperture, shutter speed and getting focus, I set focus to manual then use app to reset shutter speed to appropriate length for whatever ND filter I will use. Is this better than or no different from just using the histogram after putting filter(s) on to get correct or desired exposure? So basically as long as you get focus locked in before adding filter(s) is it difficult for the camera to see through filters to get exposure? TY
Generally the histogram can work to some degree, through the filter, or even the light meter. Whatever works for you!
@@WilliamPatinoPhotography Right on. TY
🙏📸
Cheers mate 👊🏻🙏🏻
Is that a tripod I see? Surely not
Hehe ;) I’m still trying to forgive myself.
This video has become corrupted. horizontal lines only
Working fine for me. Might be your connection or perhaps need to refresh the page. Cheers.
