My close friend is dangerously allergic to peanuts. One of his cousins who was this braindead fitness obsessed type of guy. A total muscle head. He had brought a humongous bag of peanuts to a party we all attended. We spotted the bag and told him to not open it and leave it in his backpack at the door. He grumbled and made some passive aggressive comments that it's a free country. He had known of my friend's allergy but had his own childish theory. He often said "You're just afraid of them". He snuck away a short while after the party started and nobody noticed him putting a bunch of them in a dark bottle of beer. He handed to his cousin. Not one minute later after taking his first sips, he was on the floor gasping for air. The muscle head was just standing there laughing and just grabbed his bag to continue eating them while the rest of us got the epinephrine and calked an ambulance. This all ended with his cousin being arrested for attempted manslaughter and bodily harm. The meat head's parents disowned him and threw his then homeless butt out of their house after his short prison sentence. He still claims to be innocent and that my friend was faking it the entire time.

Well of course the meathead says that. Why would he want to live with the fact that he came close to murdering someone? He has to make it other people's fault if he doesn't want bad thoughts haunting him for the rest of his life.

While my school system wasn’t the best (hopefully it is better now, graduated in 2011) they did take allergies seriously. One student was so severely allergic to peanuts that just being in the room with some could cause a mild reaction. So imagine how much worse it would have been had they actually come into contact with them. As a result the district put a ban on peanuts and peanut products in the schools while the student attended. When they graduated the ban was lifted.

In kindergarten, there was this lady who acted like making me adhere to her idea of "normal" was a personal task or something.

Similar problem here but with paprika (doesnt matter if its raw, cooked or in spice form)
Most people belive it when it comes to raw and cooked, but for some reason dont get it in their head that the spice 'paprika' is called that because its infact made from paprika.
Even worse, where i live its in basically everything,
      Vegetable nuggets, contains paprika powder.
Bread stuffed with tomato and mozzarella, contains paprika powder.
Most basic Salat dressing, contains paprika powder.
I have to triple check everything and often in restaurants (even if i get a negative response after i asked) i cant eat more than a few bites before i feel it
As i kid i luckily would only feel sick/throw up and than lay in bed for a few hours, because my mom didnt believe me.
Atm it's still limited to a burning sensation and some coughing but i Should probably get my doctor to prescribe me something for emergencies before my throat closes up for the first time
My mom also still to this day doesn't believe me that i am allergic against some things commonly used to scent deodorant, body Wash, laundry detergent etc.
Eventho my skin was constantly irritated and ripping open (even when i was just changing my shirt)
which went away as soon as my doctor wrote down a brand of scentless body wash and deodorant for me to use, now all that's left are a bunch of small scars and endlessly having to explain to people, that not smelling like flowers etc, doesn't mean you didn't take a shower this morning.

    1. The coconut oil story. That story is so tragic that I’d rather not hash it out here.
    2. OP was allergic to bananas and her then-bf’s mom didn’t believe it and added banana to a smoothie she made for OP. Bf’s mom kept insisting that OP was overreacting even after OP went into anaphylaxis and bf’s father carried her out to take her to the hospital. OP later dumped her bf because he kept excusing his mother’s actions. But in a surprising twist, bf’s father filed for divorce BECAUSE of this incident.

The coconut oil story. That grandma was a witch and deserves to go to prison. She'd been warned. The mother is absolutely in the right to never speak to her again.
As for me, there was something I did because I didn't believe someone.
When I was a kid (but still old enough to know better) I was visiting a family and one of the girls had some mice. One of them did this cute dance, but the girl warned me to not place the mouse on the carpet because she would run off and they wouldn't be able to catch her. I f'd around and found out.
I put her on the carpet and we tried to catch her, then the girl's big brother opened the door and kinda barged into the room. He stepped on the mouse. We tried to revive her, but she didn't make it.
My point, we need to believe people more instead of thinking we always know best. People know their bodies and the habits of their pets. Good parents know their children's bodies. Don't f around. You don't want to find out.

As a kid, I had a mild allergy to chocolate. It didn’t cause anaphylaxis, thankfully, but a really bad rash and made me go crazy. I don’t know how else to explain it. I became aggressive and angry if I ate it.
My parents had to explain at EVERY birthday party/school event/Halloween that I was allergic to chocolate.
MOST people were chill, but we met some morons over the years. “Allergies aren’t real,” “She can get over it if you expose her,” etc.
My favorite was, “No, she isn’t. God wouldn’t make it so a child couldn’t eat chocolate.” Then she bent down and asked me, “Honey, do you go to church?”

They'd put it down, wait for her to leave, and get rid of it. One day, because kids were leaving the lunch room without eating their veggies every single day, the lunch ladies and teachers decided that no one was allowed to leave the cafeteria until their peas and carrots were gone. I ate everything aside from the vegetables and went to throw my tray away. They stopped me and wouldn't listen to me when I said I was allergic. So, in malicious compliance, I proceeded to grab handfuls of the veggies and stuffed my face. I wasn't even done shoveling the 3rd handful in when my lips and hands started swelling and itching. They tried to stop me, I kept eating until it was all gone and then it kinda becomes fuzzy for me aside from waking up in the nurse's office.

At one weekend he went to his aunts place because they had some fun planned. His aunt didn't believe that he couldn't drink milk and she was not happy that the special milk was expensive (she didn't have to buy it, his parents brought some for him). When his parents came to pick him up his aunt whined at what happened. After a short discussion she confessed to give him cow milk. His father slapped her across the face and said to her that she was a b****. They refused to pay for the cleaning because it was her own doing that let to this. The relationship between them was cold for a few months but after an apology from the aunt and some gifts for her nephew it went back to nearly normal.

I have a good one: In second grade there was a kid in my class who always came in with some sort of fish in his lunchbox. One day he had shrimp and he offered me some, I politely declined saying that my dad told me never to eat it because I'm allergic to it and it'll make me really sick. He then said "My mom said people with allergies are usually making it up because they're picky and don't like the food." And I thought that was the end of it. I got up for some reason, whether it was to use the bathroom or get some ice cream, and when I came back I took another bite of my hamburger. The rest was fuzzy, but I remember going to the hospital.
When I came back to school, the kid told me he put a piece of shrimp into my hamburger to trick me into trying it and realizing I like it because that's what his mom did to him all the time. He was crying and begging me to not tell on him, and to forgive him. Well, I must have forgiven him because we were best friends until high school when we just kinda fizzled out in the beginning of freshman year.

Hearing these stories makes me so mad. I have a friend that is intolerant to green bellpeppers and straight up allergic to red ones. Yellow and orange are fine though for some reason. She's also allergic to black pepper. Not once have i questioned her about it. A lot of food i make uses bellpeppers and black pepper, but if i make anything for her or that is available for her to eat, i specifically avoid those things. As far as i know, most people take her allergies rather serious.
I do remember as a child not being taken completely seriously for an allergy to cedar. We had hamsters, and my parents bought cedar bedding for them. I already had bad seasonal allergies, but also ended up having asthma. Turned out it was agitated very badly by the cedar, especially when fresh. When it was fresh, my eyes would swell up and i would have trouble breathing (luckily not to the point i ever had to go to a hospital or anything). We just adjusted things around the house; no real christmas trees, and changed the bedding for the hamsters. Years later at school though, they specifically used cedar chips outside. Once they were older, i could tolerate them for what time we were outside, but i remember having to beg to go to the library or something when they'd bring in fresh ones. I'd spend the whole afternoon miserable after being around them.

I developed a moderate allergy(?) when going in a shower, as in blotchy red hives EVERYWHERE that the water hit. I would take two antihistamines before and two after having a shower, at the instruction of a doctor (?!?!?!). Even then, I would still sit crying and screaming while itching myself to the point of bleeding when I had a shower. It took 18 months of sink-baths with damp cloths and 18 months of council visits before they finally decided to fit a bath in the house for us. My mum was livid at how long it had taken, as I couldn't properly clean myself or wash my hair. It got to a point where when I finally got to have a bath, I towel dried myself afterwards and all of the dead skin and dirt scrubbed off of me in rolls like a sunburn would. The council didn't believe someone could have a reaction to shower water, and to be honest it is still hard even for me to comprehend, but when they sent the last person out, she put in a complaint that the council hadn't done anything sooner because she could see how damaged and greasy my hair was from not being able to wash it effectively, and how I had patches of dark patches, dirt, on my body from not being able to completely clean myself.
Several years down the line, I've moved in with my partner and tested our shower on my hand and wrist. The burning sensation and immediate redness is worse than ever. Officially, I've been diagnosed with urticaria, but I never really got an answer as to why this is shower-specific. I can have baths just fine.

I'm not a doctor, but I have a few very vague theories.
Option 1: there's a weird chemical in shower heads. Maybe some kind of plastic, or rubber, or lubricant (if the shower head has adjustment settings).
Option 2: there's something that grows a lot better in shower systems than anywhere else.
Option 3: it's mechanical. There are disorders in which otherwise harmless mechanical stress results in visible (and generally unpleasant) irritation. I could imagine water doing this, and a shower of droplets flowing under pressure would be worse than immersion in a non-moving bath.

I have an entitled aunt that seems to love telling others how to raise their kids. I'm autistic and that comes with a lot of food aversions. One of them is boiled potatoes. I'm not necessarily allergic to potatoes, I can eat fries just fine, but something about big chunks of boiled or mashed potatoes makes me sick. My mom threw a party and invited family, and I was about 8 years old at the time. Aunt showed up and brought her own food. Potato salad, which is my biggest trigger. I, of course, refuse to eat it. Aunt gets upset despite both my parents explaining to her why I can't have any. Mom knows that I can't be left alone with aunt but has to check on the grill with dad. Aunt drops a whole 3 spoonfuls of potato salad on my plate. I was getting sick of her shit at this point and decided to teach her a lesson. I start eating the potato salad. Aunt is looking all smug that she got her way. About 4 bites in I feel it coming. I made sure to turn directly to my aunt and throw up all over her. Aunt throws a giant fit, gets into a fight with my mom, and is forced to leave early. She never tried to force me to eat anything ever again.

My story is excusable because this happened when my grandmother started developing dementia and I caught it on time before I ate it. I have an allergy to penicillin, specifically the part that comes from yeast mold. So I have to be careful with any baked good with yeast in it, at the slightest signs of mold I avoid it or I will end up covered in super itchy hives for a week (luckily no anaphylaxis.) One day I took my mother to visit her mother about an hour before lunch, I told my mother I was getting hungry and we should go soon and that is when my grandmother insisted we stay for lunch and that she would make us sandwiches. I figured okay yeah it has been a while since I've had one of my grandmother's sandwiches, she always made them up really good, typical grandma kind of thing. When I got the sandwich I noticed small spots in the bread and on a closer look could tell the bread had begun to go moldy. I pointed this out that I couldn't eat it cause the bread had gone bad and my grandmother blurted out "A little mold won't hurt you." At which point I quickly snapped "yes, actually it will, did you forget about my allergy?" I felt really bad a week or 2 later when we found out about the dementia.
I also have a second story that involves me but I only know it from what my mother told me because I was an infant. I had an allergy to lactose, not intolerance but a strait up allergy and that one would cause anaphylaxis. My mother informed everyone about this including the babysitter. While the babysitter believed my mother about the allergy she underestimated it. One day as my mother was getting ready to leave for work I was in my high chair having breakfast and my mother noticed my cheek was breaking out with a severe rash. She started to freak out asking if I was given milk, the babysitter just as confused as my mother insisted she didn't give me anything and then it dawned on her. The babysitter was having a bowl of cereal moments earlier and without thinking she gave me a kiss on my cheek, right where the rash was. Luckily it was just skin contact so it just made me fussy and with a bit of ointment I was better in a few hours. I grew out of that allergy a few years later and now only large quantities of lactose causes me to break out into a minor case of hives (large quantity being like a half gallon of chocolate milk in one night which I might have discovered in my late teens when I decided to buy myself some chocolate milk for family movie night.)

So, I found out I was allergic to pumpkin when I first moved out of my parents’ house. I was very fussy eater as a kid and don't like pie. So, I never had pumpkin pie. Never even touched pumpkin or smelled pumpkin before I move out. When I moved out my aunt got me scented candles that were pumpkin as a gift. I like candles so I would light them when cleaning and when it was just a wonderful day for it. So, I started getting sick. Didn't realize it was because of allergies until later when I had a hard time breathing. Then I got thought i would try pie for a first time thinking I might like some kind of pie. Tried different ones, apple, pecan, pumpkin, and others not at the same time different events every time. Found I still did not like pie. But when I tried the pumpkin, it was worst. So, I had to go to the doctor right away. Found I was allergic by eating and scent. So, I stay away from it. Do not even allow in my house at all. So, I am married, and we have told my In-Laws multiple times I am allergic. They can have their pies, but I need to have it the frozen kind or store bought so the scent isn't big in the house. Most have been great about it but my mother-in-law. So thanksgiving she invited us over. I found out that she put pumpkin in everything. The turkey, pie, cake, side dishes and even had candles. It got so bad that I started having a tough time breathing and would not touch the food. I was thankful I didn't like her cooking in the first place, so I only took small bites, so it wasn't enough to go to the hospital. She then a year later thought it would be nice to give us homemade cookies. But put it in a container that could not see inside. I saw that the one for chocolate chips were just the ingredients, so I went to the second one. I didn't think and just opened it. Immediately got a face full of pumpkin spice cookies. Freshly made so it had the heat and overwhelming smell. I immediately started choking and my throat started closing up. My husband had to get my medicine right away to open my throat. After that I didn't trust her at all with food. Would throw away any cookies from her and we didn't go to Thanksgiving dinner again with her.

TL;DR - My parents and I have both severe and mild allergies. My dad’s parents tried to guilt-trip us into eating a cake we’re all allergic to even after we said no. My parents were mad when we left their house.
FULL STORY: I’m lucky (or unlucky) enough to be in a family with both common and uncommon allergies. It’s very well known by friends and family my dad has a severe gluten allergy (massive migraines, vomiting, etc. even if he’s just around it or if there’s cross-contamination). I happen to have it as well although it’s milder (I just can’t think straight, remember anything, and I have difficulty focusing which are all horrible for my job that requires all three in working order), We’re both mildly allergic to chocolate too. My mom also happens to have another lesser-known food allergy that she doesn’t even risk going out to eat now due to her reaction (nothing emergency room bad, but it is still a pain)
Because of my family already having allergies and being very vigilant when staying away from certain foods, I don’t have any stories…except one.
We were visiting my dad’s parents. No one in my immediate family is fond of them, but we were in the area. Besides, they’d go out of their way to pass my mom’s parents’ (who we usually visit) house to see if our car was there. We also didn’t plan on being in the area anymore since my mom’s parents were moving in with us states away. So we decided to visit them a couple of times before we left for good.
One of those times (I don’t remember the occasion) my dad’s parents had decided to buy a chocolate cake for us all to enjoy. I don’t remember if it was gluten-free, but it was still chocolate and I knew for sure my mom couldn’t eat it.
My dad and I obviously didn’t want the cake. He hadn’t eaten chocolate in decades so, he didn’t know what would happen. I didn’t feel like having a super itchy back or ulcers in my mouth for a month (which were usually my reactions). My mom couldn’t eat it as I said before.
So, none of us consumed the cake (despite me really wanting to since I love chocolate-). My dad’s parents knew he couldn’t eat chocolate. I can’t even remember if the cake was gluten-free or not, but they knew about that allergy too.
Since all three of us were against eating it, my dad’s parents had the audacity to try and guilt-trip us. “We spent so much money on that cake. The two of us won’t be able to finish it.”
I could feel my mom boiling. On the car ride home, she was furious they even said that, saying they could have bought a vanilla cake instead. But no, they bought chocolate. Let’s just say, I wanted to leave the moment we sat down. It was an hour of agony.
My parents and I have had a rocky relationship with my dad’s parents for years. They don’t pay mind to other people. They only care about themselves. They still think I’m in dance when I haven’t been in dance for over 10 years. We’ve told them. We told them my mom’s parents were moving in with us and they were still surprised when my mom’s parents’ house was sold. Looking back, this incident shouldn’t have surprised me.
That’s the only food allergy story relating to this video I have.

She was eating them and suddenly says that her mouth is really itchy. My dad is a doctor so he recognized as an allergy. She wasn’t allowed to eat chocolate or peanuts for the whole trip because we didn’t know what she was allergic to in the m&m’s. After that she had several allergy tests done and reacted to the smallest oral peanut dose and was instructed to stay away from peanuts. She’s fine around tree nuts and nuts processed in a separate facility. She’s just very allergic to peanuts which is very sad.

I went to an allergist and apparently I have a citric sensitivity to oranges and grapefruit specifically. It isn’t even the citric acid because limes have way more citric acid in them than most other citrus fruits. Just oranges and grapefruits.

all of these sound completely insane and dangerous to me, but I know my dad's tried to trick my brother into eating mushrooms (which he doesn't like) by blending their spaghetti sauce really fine (he just refused to eat the spaghetti at all). It's a question of respect, even if it's just a dislike, why would you WANT to make someone unhappy by forcing them to eat a thing they don't want to eat? I'm not saying make your kids live on a diet of mcD's and chicken nuggets but come on. Even if you suspect people are lying about having an allergy because they don't like something, THEY DON'T LIKE THE THING AND DON'T WANT TO EAT IT ANYWAY so why do you even take that chance of sending them to the hospital just to prove a point!

So if I used a butter knife to make a PB+J, I’d have a reaction because they didn’t actually wash the butter knife, they just rinsed it off of fish stuff and put it back in the drawer.
Told me I was over reacting when I had a reaction and refused to bring me to the hospital when I asked.
I had Benadryl every single day that year.
Super happy I don’t live with them anymore, and have no contact.

I'm among the 5% of people that are allergic to things we don't test for so I don't know what it actually is. I know it appears in many brands of washing powder and fabric softener, even allergy friendly ones. My mother has the same allergy. If we use a wrong brand that has whatever it is we're allergic too, we'll end up scratching ourselves bloody. She breaks out in hived on her legs, and I do it on my arms. Other than that, I'm allergic to cheap theater makeup (the stuff you'll buy for your child for Halloween), fake tattoos, nail polish and acai berries. The theater paint and fake tattoos will have me breaking out in hives too. The nail polish allergy have turned into eczema on my fingers that will usually break out when the weather starts changing in Autumn and Spring. Yes, currently dealing with that. And acai berries give me the worst headache that won't go away until the berries have traveled through my system.
I know someone who's allergic to meat from big animals like cown and pigs. She can eat fish and birds but nothing else. Her body won't break it down and she'll end up in the hospital in extreme pain while it travels through her system. Luckily we live in a country with free healthcare and she knows to avoid these types of meat but there's always someone who doesn't believe you can be allergic to meat.

Ir could be one of, if not multiple of those, then perhaps through process of elimination, if possible, you could figure out what it was, and then bring it up with a doctor when you're almost certain what it was, if not completely certain. Maybe that can help in getting some custom made specifically for you and your family who also have the allergy(ies)

Usually the upset stomach ones are not actually allergies but intolerances. A lot of people mix them up but one is you being unable to digest the irritant while the other is your immune system over reacting to the irritant. I actually have had both to lactose, as an infant I had an allergy to it that would result in anaphylaxis so my mother had to buy a special formula. I grew out of that allergy at a young age but as an adult I have developed mild lactose intolerance so too much dairy will give me cramps and make trips to the bathroom more difficult.

Not technically an allergy, but along the same lines:
I have sensory issues, which for me includes being pretty much unable to eat certain foods. Eggs, avocado, stuff like that, but the biggest culprits are mushrooms. They won't harm me, but they feel really unpleasant in my mouth. I mean "I feel sick to my stomach just feeling this texture" levels of unpleasant.
It took a while for my dad to really get his head around that. He wouldn't complain about me picking mushrooms out of my dinner, but he'd still cook with them pretty often. Not blaming him too hard, he likes mushrooms, but it was annoying having to carefully pick through half my meals.
Eventually I realized just saying "mushrooms give me sensory hell" might not really convey my perspective to someone who hasn't actually been through sensory hell. Once I found a way to explain the feeling ("mushrooms make me feel like I'm going to choke, even the flavor is ruined by association") he immediately switched to cooking mushrooms separately and adding them into his and my sister's food after pulling mine out. There's a word I learned recently. Amathia, which essentially means Ignorance and lack of wisdom with an unwillingness to learn. The Greco-Roman philosopher, Epictetus, likened it to a disability like a crippled leg or being blind. Something to be pitied instead of hated. If you think about it, he isn't wrong about the pity part. These people's amathia drive everyone around them away. They are doomed to live life more and more alone as people slowly cut them off as they get tired of their crap. If they're like my mother, they're doomed to either not having a job or working another out of hundreds of dead end jobs. Never learning from her mistakes, and always worrying that she will run out of people willing to support her and end up on the street. It truly is a sad existence, in my opinion.

I have two stories regarding allergies, one of them is when I was young and the other happened to a guy that I knew while waiting to get out of the military. The first story happened when I was younger, around 10 if I'm not mistaken, I had eaten lobster for the first time. I ended up throwing it up and feeling my throat swell up a bit, but nothing life threatening as it's a mild allergy. I was sick at the time, so my mom thought that I was full of it for years when I said that I thought I was allergic to shellfish, feeding me shrimp over time that made my stomach not feel good with a tingling sensation in my throat and made me eat a seafood bisque around 6 years later, basically a creamy soup with all sorts of seafood and shellfish mixed in. Ended up throwing it all up about 10 minutes later after one bowl and had the feeling that my throat was closing a bit. My mom finally realized that I wasn't full of it and that I was telling the truth about being allergic. My older brother pretends to be allergic to shellfish now because he wants everything to be about him. Now for the military story. One day while I was waiting to be sent off to be shipped back home, I ended up in a truck with a couple of guys from a different group, and one of them was getting kicked out for "lying" about not having an allergy to peanuts. He had never eaten peanuts had only tried them while in the military and this confused everyone, including the DS driving the truck.

So, things like anything from Bath and Body Works, skin care/ hair care with fragrances, scented hand sanitizers and hand cream are not to be brought into my room. I get really bad migraines that send me home. It happens each year that one student or another will bring something at least once and use it under their desk thinking that I won’t notice. I always do. I don’t get sick right away, it takes a while of continued exposure for me to get a headache. Usually, the kids notice and get rid of it. Last year, I got an apology from one girl who had never heard of my allergy. This year, one student had to be moved out of my room because she came to school for two weeks in a row covered in perfume! She was also wearing a full face of make up, which isn’t allowed in elementary school. Admin tried to talk to mom, who said, “tough luck”, so she moved rooms. Last week, I got a migraine so bad that it lasted 24 hours-the first time for me. I had to wait half a day for a sub so I could go home because I was so sick. The next day? You guessed it! One of my worst allergy attacks would be in the hospital I was staying at inpatient after my partial hysterectomy. The nurse read my file that I am allergic to codine and other narcotics. One exception is a narcotic at a very certain dosage, and that’s all that I can take. She didn’t care and gave me a higher dosage which in turn made my skin break out. The next thing I know I’m scratching my skin off and start losing my ability to breathe. She told me to just take a shower and I would be fine. Hysterically I called my mom while barely being able to breathe going, “Help mom. They did something wrong, I can’t breathe!” I stammered out very choppy and frantic. My mom called them and demanded that they help me now or she would come up there and do it herself. (This was the peak of cov*d and people weren’t allowed back except for patients.) I was suffocating and turning purple and red and they FINALLY came in and gave me a crap ton of IV Benodryl, which did nothing and they had to come back two other times with steroids and I FINALLY went over the hurdle of anaphylaxis. Then they decided to ignore my allergy to a certain nausea medication and I started seizing out on my hospital bed. (It’s an intolerance that triggers my seizures). AGAIN they came back with multitudes of medication to counteract what they had done to me. Never went back to that hospital.

So I have a really annoying food allergy wherein I'm not quite deathly allergic to nearly all fruits and vegetables. Basically they have to be cooked for there to be no reaction, and I have to prepare in advance if I want to eat healthy. My body's reactions vary but the most common reaction sequence is an itchy throat, then the inside of my ears itch, then I start to feel my airway swell shut, and I've thankfully never gone beyond that. Anyway this is from elementary school, private catholic school, and they've just started a new "healthy foods" program. Program's teachers are making the kids try new vegetables to try and get us to eat better. I currently have a cold sore on my lip, not feeling too great, and they make their way to me. I explain my ridiculous allergy and that I won't be eating anything. Of course they "make" me try something, even if it's just a bite. Fine, but you won't like the results. One bite of a radish and five minutes later my cold sore lip is swelling at a rapid pace until it's about the size of a grape, my throat itches, and the teachers are freaking out. Guess who doesn't have to do the stupid program anymore... Also come to find out much later that my mother is also highly allergic to radish and edamame, go figure.

My dad didn't believe me, so he ground up a few pieces and mixed them with the sugar that I put into my coffee. No surprise, diarrhea. So I decided to taste it, and sensed that funky taste. Swapped sugar, had no problems, then a few months later, he said that I don't have this intolerance, because I didn't have diarrhea shortly after the coffee. That's when I revealed that I swapped the tainted sugar, thereby I didn't have any reaction. He went silent for a good 5 minutes. Later, I became intolerant to coffee, still drinking it in much smaller amount.

Speaking as someone with some weird allergies, people doubting them is a very real problem. Fortunately, one of them is minor. I just tingle and my tongue swells a bit when I eat apples or pears. But the other one, bleach, gets a lot of "Isn't everyone allergic to bleach?" No. Everyone can get chemical burns from bleach, not everyone breaks out in hives.
My mom was helping me clean my house, and we had to go shopping for supplies. She wanted certain specific products. "Mom, those have bleach." "We'll just rinse it out, it's fine" We were in the middle of an argument over one thing or another at this point, so there was no getting through to her and I ended up just saying "If I die, it's your fault." Which, yeah, wasn't the kindest thing to say, but it was also true. She cleans out my bathtub with the bleach, because I absolutely refused to touch it. I then spend a while letting the shower run, wasting a bunch of water, because I needed to shower and the whole place still stank of bleach. Like I truly couldn't touch a single surface in my own place. Don't get me wrong, I'm grateful my mom helped me clean, but in the process my apartment became uninhabitable. Eventually, I take either a bath or a shower. Low and behold, over the next hour or so, hives start showing up and getting worse. My mom was the one who took me to the hospital where I found out I had this allergy, only a few weeks before this happened. I fortunately still had the medicine I was given and was okay.

I used to be allergic to strawberries as a kid. Now I was never tricked into eating them, nor were my parents aware I was allergic until I got hives from eating them. And even though I only got hives from them and never had to go to the hospital from a reaction, they simply kept me away from strawberries as a preventative measure. I grew out of the allergy years ago and could eat them with zero consequence since. My adoptive dad was dangerously allergic to shellfish when he was alive (death unrelated) and when I was made aware, any time I ate shrimp in any way I made sure to was the crap out of everything the shrimp touched.

Some people, like me, get the allergy later in life. I am also allergic to mint, but growing up I didn't know the signs and thought it was just a spicy food... It started as an intolerance but now my throat swells even if I just smell it, like I could die if someone is chewing mint gum next to me. Due to the anaphylaxis symptom not happening until my teen years no one believed me when I told them I couldn't eat the mint I loved so much.

I got bit by a lone star tic and became allergic to red meat, it was horrible. The reaction times range from instant to hours or even days after ingestion. I wouldn't break out into hives or stop breathing or anything like that, but I'd get these intense pains, just like period cramps, but I'd be on the ground crying if i didn't take pain killers in time. The last reaction i had was months ago. I've been slowly reintroducing meat into my diet, and im happy to say that i seem to be in the clear. I'm still weary of it, and i won't eat meat if given a meat free option, but the nightmare seems to be over 🤞

The main rule is this: If someone says they have an allergy..... THEY HAVE ALLERGY!!!! Meaning you do not try to trick them, lie to them, or prove them wrong. Your response should be: 'You have a nut/fruit/food allergy? Ok, so we have to avoid this this and this. In case you accidentally eat the item where is your EpiPen so that I can help you?'
It is literally that simple. These morons that claim allergies don't exist are the same types that will say medical conditions like Asthma are not real. Newsflash! when I say I am Asthmatic and a chemical in hairy spray causes an ASthma attack I expect people to believe me and say: 'Let's avoid the hair salon.' But no you still get the village idiot who says: 'You're just making that up.'🙄

What is the matter with these people? I’m someone who loves cooking, but if someone tells me that they have an allergy to something I’m not going to try and prove if they’re telling the truth or not. If they are telling the truth, then I’m not gonna try and poison them. If they’re not telling the truth, then they probably don’t like the food, and I’m not gonna force them to eat something they don’t like. Regardless, it doesn’t affect me at all, so I don’t understand why these people feel the need to test people who have allergies. Seriously, grow up. Maybe if people started getting slapped with severe legal trouble for testing someone’s allergies this nonsense would stop.

Either they are lying and you are actively disrespectful to their tastes, or they're telling the truth and you are a colossal asshole. My parents and most people, I have an unusual but severe allergy to beef and for most of my life I didn’t say much about the fact that eating beef would send me into severe GI distress, except to say that it made me sick which my parents didn’t pay any attention to so would keep making beef for meals. The only time they mentioned it when I was growing up was that after dinner I would be in the bathroom, instead of cleaning off the table. After I was old enough and making my own food I obviously cut it out of my diet and using my own cookware to make my foods and stopped having constant reactions (I was incredibly lucky that my reactions only got worse in terms of duration and onset rather than severity), and for a long time my parents refused to believe that I was allergic until they contaminated my food while camping with beef fat (this is one of the worst, and leads to an almost instantaneous reaction I’ve found, and it’s unclear whether the contamination was intentional or accidental) and was basically camped out in the bathroom for a day and a half. But it’s also a problem at restaurants and almost anywhere because it isn’t an allergen people actually put much stock into, but I’ve had several bad reactions thanks to cross contamination.

For those like me, I get headaches and joint problems(Mustard also causes headaches). But I can at least tolerate processed foods with milk, so like a chocolate bar is find for me. My mother's reaction however, is far worse, and having anything above trace levels causes a wide list of issues.

I have what's essentially a Legume Allergy, even though it's NOT an Allergy and more of a "My body literally isn't made to consume Legumes". It's a "G6PD deficiency" or 'Favism' how its called.
If I eat even a single bean, I get the afromentioned Favism. Essentially my Blood loses the Ability to carry Oxygen. My entire body suffocates even though I can still breathe.
In my school the food with dishes was delivered to side-rooms of our classrooms where we would eat everyday. One Day we had a Stand-in Teacher while Lunch time.
And she was a "You eat what's on the Plate" type of Boomer... err, Person. She wanted me to eat what got delivered (which had green beans in it). I instead ate the rest of my Breakfast because my Mother always packs me more when we know the school will serve beans.
She didn't trick me into eating it, but wanted to force me. She didn't believe I had an allergy, to which I explained everything I know about my Condition...
Then she told me I "probably got that from Wikipedia" and were lying. I asked her why she never took a Look into my files...
She looked me in the eyes and said "I have better Things to do with my Time"...
I became furious and went to the Principal. TL:DR, she got fired because she was doing that stuff all the time and got away with it 2 times already.

Less of a 'Test' and more a realization of "THAT BAD" - Sister has had a peanut allergy for longer than she's been able to walk. Its affected her life in a lot of ways because peanuts are involved in a lot of things most don't know about. Well, she's at a sleepover with one of her friends who lives down the road. Friends Mom is making PB&J sandwiches for all the girls and is planning on making my sister a ham and cheese sandwich. She washes her hands, uses completely different dishes and utensils for the ham and cheese. Gives my sister her plate first so no one else accidentally contaminates her plate with a lose dribble of peanut butter.
The usual 'intelligent people knowing a child has a life threatening allergy to something and doing their best to serve a bunch of kids who might not be as careful as they should be because they are all 6 and thus understandably incapable of such'
Sister and friends go to the room to eat sandwiches and watch tv.
Friends mom a bit later comes carrying my sister to my house screaming for my mom that my sister is in anaphylactic shock.
Mom says kids swear that NO ONE gave her any of their sandwiches, let her touch their plate or anything like that. They all were watching tv when my sister said she felt icky and suddenly started coughing then stopped breathing.
Trip to the hospital gives the realization from the doctors that kids are telling the truth, she had a reaction just by SITTING NEXT TO people who had the sandwiches.

My ex husband was getting increasing allergic reactions to anything with walnuts. They weren’t terrible serious but increasingly, his mouth would get numb and swollen if he came into contact with them. I made sure to check ingredients to avoid walnuts or walnut oil. I don’t like walnuts anyway so it was easy to avoid them. However, when we went to his parent’s place and I mentioned this increasing sensitivity, his mother who had actually been a nurse would pooh-pooh it and he would downplay it. Yet, he would come home complaining that his mouth was puffy. I kept telling him that if he didn’t insist on her avoiding giving him anything with walnuts, he could have a serious, even deadly reaction. He absolutely refused to say anything to her.
Meanwhile, his mother wouldn’t give his brother anything with eggs because once (ONCE) when he was a kid, he’d eaten an egg-salad sandwich in the car and got sick. That, apparently, was “proof” that, at 30, he was “allergic to eggs”. And before I knew he was “allergic to eggs” a couple of times I had made things with eggs in them with no ill effects at all. Nor did he ever ask if there were eggs in anything which, if you had an actual allergy, you would do. He also ate all kinds of prepared foods which likely had eggs in them without any concern or reaction.
I wasn’t about to give him eggs to prove a point but the fact that my husband was actually allergic to walnuts and got definite reactions and she refused to believe it but his brother had one episode when he was 8 or something which was probably due to eating an egg-salad sandwich in a hot car was “proof” that he was allergic.
