    Now this is what blacksmithing is all about. You have an idea and you problem-solve your way through it. I love this little project. I will definitely be trying this one. I think I would braze in the pin though just to make sure it stays put.

      James, I find it easier to make videos when I'm working on something I really haven't done and can talk and work it through on camera. And in my opinion, it just makes for an all around better video. Thanks. Glen

    yet another great project, glen. I, personally, really like the fact that you haven't gone to making a knife for every video. I like knives, but that isn't what compelled me to start pounding steel, and that isn't really what I want to watch in a blacksmithing channel. that's why I really enjoy watching your channel. Thanks, Glen, for sharing what you know. You've definitely taught me alot.

      Christopher, Others have said the same thing so maybe it's good I'm not interested or good at making knives. I will still do my occasional oddball blade, mainly for fun. But for the most part, I will do stuff like this or my usual tongs and hammers. Glad you can take anything away from my videos. Thanks. Glen

    That was really entertaining for me. I have seen several of these around where I live and wondered just how to do it without welding the loops. Thanks again for the videos, and I'm liking the tongs.

      Ron, Glad you like the tongs. Before making this, I also wondered about how to go about this. I planned a little (in my mind) but I'm much more of a "do it and see" kind of guy. Thanks. Glen

    That turned out great, Glen! I couldn't envision it when you first started, but it came out very nice. Can't wait to see your final version of the adjustable tong.

      Steve, Me too - I couldn't quite envision how it would turn out. But the end result is pretty pleasing. The adjustable tong coming soon... Thanks. Glen

      David, Glad you like it. I've since improved this style of tong, basically by increasing the stock size I use to make these tongs. Thanks for watching.

    Well done Glen. A very interesting project that turned out nice. Having used these dead bolts for many years a suggestion for your next one. The stop pin could be made such that it is also your handle and by bending an 'ear' up between the loops it could act as a lock to keep the bolt in the locked position.

    • @gstongs
      @gstongs  7 років тому

      Paul, That's a very excellent idea. When thinking about the stop and what could be done, I kept thinking about cutting and bending out a small part of the bolt but your idea is much better. I will have to give it a go. Thanks. Glen

      Jeffrey, Like I mentioned in another comment, I'm much more of a doer than planner. I need to see how things unfold when doing and make adjustments on the fly rather than have well laid plans which I'm sure to alter. Thanks brother. Glen

    I was pleasantly surprised at how well this little latch turned out. I was initially thinking the hasps would wind up too thin, but they appear fairly substantial. With some square nails to attach it, it will look really awesome.
    I always watch the entire ad, when there is one (assuming it isn't longer what the video itself), particularly for the smaller channels I am subscribed to. I think supporting the independent UA-camrs is really important, because they provide content that is invaluable to others just starting out (whether that is blacksmithing!, metal casting, or just general whatever). Also, quality content is not always easy to find; I know there are plenty of people putting up videos that have no idea what they are doing. I feel I have been lucky to find several very good channels, and I hope that they will continue to exist and thrive.

    • @gstongs
      @gstongs  7 років тому

      Brian, For a time, I wasn't sure where I was going with this project. But it turned out well and the hoops (hasps) are plenty strong. I appreciate you watching the ads. It's a very good way to support the channels you enjoy. Thanks very much. Glen

      Others tell me this so I will try my best to continue in this way. Plus, I stink at making knives (something many other channels focus on) so I don't have much choice! Thanks. Glen

    Glen,
    Looking forward to the new slip joint tongs to be finalized being someone who wants to just fool around pounding metal the new tongs and one of your hammers should suit my purpose. Really enjoy your videos.

    I happened to watch this one with closed captioning on. It translates you terribly. About the only thing it got right was when there was just the sound of your forge running and the hammer strikes it said {music}. Perfect. Thanks for the idea!

    • @gstongs
      @gstongs  7 років тому

      Louis, It doesn't surprise me - my English is hard to decipher. That my forge's sound and hammering were translated as "music" is pretty funny. But I guess hammer and anvil and forge sounds are music to blacksmiths' ears... Thanks. Glen

    You are part blacksmith and part sculptor. I like that bolt. I have seen bolts that had a 4" or so handle where you put that pin, to serve as a handle. Not critiquing just another idea. Also liked the walk down the street. Reminds me a little of Korea.

    • @gstongs
      @gstongs  7 років тому

      Sorry for my super late reply. Your idea is excellent - using the handle as a stop is a very good idea and something I will do in a future video. Yes, in many ways (looks) Taiwan is similar to Korea, or so I hear. Thanks. Glen

    Like the tongs, you could make the bottom jaw longer :) It will help with picking things up if you angle the tip and will be long enough for the thicker settings.

    • @gstongs
      @gstongs  6 років тому

      I like your idea about making one jaw longer and may experiment with that. Obviously, there are also tongs with both jaws longer and angled as you say. They then seem to have a greater holding range but often hold just OK within that range and oftentimes don't hold well the specific size you want them to hold. At least that's from my experience. Thanks for watching and commenting. Glen

    I love those tongs. If you want to get rid of any of your prototypes I would gladly accept if they somehow got to me! lol. Love your stuff. Keep it up. I think I just might have to make a sliding bolt myself. My list of projects that I want to do just keeps getting longer. I cant keep up with it. Define Your Legacy.

      Once I get this design perfected, I think these tongs are going to be very versatile. I'll keep you in mind in case I part with any of the prototypes. And I'll be in touch about your mark...Tthanks. Glen

    Have you thought about putting a small channel and shoulder on your slip tongs. Something similar to channel locks.

    • @gstongs
      @gstongs  7 років тому

      Sam, Yes, I've thought about notching the tong half that passes through and have those notches catch somewhere on the other half. But first thing is first - I need to get my basic design down. I also have some other ideas to help these tongs avoid slipping but nothing seems easy... Thanks for your good suggestion. Glen

    I subscribed and gave that a thumbs up... Patreon is not going to work for anyone on youtube... reason why is simple.. I subscribe to over 400 channels... even if i just gave a dime to each one every time I watched a video.... well ... I'd be dead broke. You get the point. If you had just one channel you were loyal to ... yea ok... but nobody just subscribes to one channel. UA-cam has screwed themselves Royal. Trying to make subscribers pay for a company themselves after they grew youtube into a multi billion dollar investment is not going to work.
