Blacksmithing : Hand Forging Door Latch / Bolt

- I am sharing the process of hand forging a rustic door latch or door bolt, using traditional methods of blacksmithing, side draft forge and stone coal. Really love the vintage look and feel of this latch!
Here are the measurements of materials, promised by our Sun Hill Quality Inspector:Flat 60mmx6mm - 18cm;Flat 25mmx5mm - 10cm;3 x Flat 20mmx4mm - around 8cm (to be adjusted);Round bar 12mm - 35cm;6mm bar for 7pcs rivets.
You will also need a good bottle of beer and a wreath, should you forge it on a Midsummer Day =) But this is optional =)
I used a rounding hammer for moving the metal and a heavier hammer for hot punching, while a smaller hammer will be useful for riveting. If you do not have a smaller one - just use your strong fingers =)
The other tools are: anvil, blacksmith's tongs, an improvised shaping tool for flat bar "loops", wire brush, rasp for finishing. A squeaky drill will add some charm to your project for sure!
No power hammer needed!
Hope that this video could be helpful or entertaining for blacksmith enthusiasts as well as for craft loving community or just any person interested in how metal craft is made! If you are inspired to forge such type of latch or bolt, please let us know about your results!
We hope you will find out something new about blacksmithing and enjoy your visit to our small countryside workshop!
It is great to hear that our videos seem to have calming and relaxing effect! =) We really like the original sounds of our smithy, we use a microphone RØDE for sound recording. So all the sounds in our videos are recorded in our workshop and around it. Relaxing sounds and calming yet organized atmosphere are inevitable parts of what we hope our videos should feel like.
If you like the video, please, let us know by leaving a like - your kind support is always so motivating!

Will you ask the camera person to stop looking outside . We don't want to miss any of the marvellous blacksmithing .
So sorry that our B-rolls seem distracting to you. They were really meant to add some story of the place we live in and to release tension from eyes and thoughts.
