      I'm almost jealous, I'm 27 and am already set in my career after finding a love for this. Now it's bout saving money to get my own smith shop up and running combined with taking classes for blacksmithing. You've got so much time ahead of you, stay committed and you could make some incredible stuff

      I wish I had that when I was your age , I didn’t start until I way 23 , I wish I knew I wanted to do this when I was in school so I could have mapped it out better , but it’s never too late

      Juggling work along with buying tools etc etc
      I wanted to make swords but that’s just not practical for my time and resources, these smaller projects are within my skills at the moment, I’ve made knives but I got bored with straight lines 🤣

    I like the design. One could put all sorts of things at the ends. Leaves, animal heads, scrolls. Make it an × or a curved ×/+. Nice. Oh and good recommendation on that PBS vid!🍻

    Nice work John, i really like that. That door pull would look right at home on the door of an old church as well as the huge wood doors of an old castle or mission.

    Great instruction really enjoyable shame that this art is being lost folks today would buy cheap tat then complain that it didn’t last ,you are one of the few true craftsman left sorry for the ramble from an old fart stay safe👨🏻‍🏭uk

      The good news is that there seems to be more people taking up blacksmithing all of the time. Most are primarily interested in knives, but its still encouraging.

    I liked the fact that you said you could easily make the offset for the center bar under the fly press, but instead chose to show how to make it on the anvil for those of us who don't have a fly press! I don't own one but the club does but due to the shut down, no access to it

    I could easily see this (slightly modified) hanging as a door knocker on an ancient cathedral or an old Spanish mission. It would be simple to make this into a cross, and I could imagine it hanging on a door three inches thick.
    As for doing extended videos for Patreon supporters, I think that's a great idea. I don't (currently) support anyone on Patreon, but extended videos are a good way to give those who support you something extra.
    Also, the text descriptions are great. Plus, they aren't so fast that I'm having to stop the video, back up a few seconds (or having to pause the video (or both)) just to read them. I think it fits well with your videos, and your style.

    I really like that design John. I was thinking it would make a good lift latch for a barn door too. Just make the ten on about 3" long. Good job John. Take care and God bless. Keep safe.

    A keyhole of similar desing is depicted in the coat of arms of Karstula, Finland, so I'd say the desing has been around in northern Europe.

    It has been awhile since I have had time to sit and watch one of your videos John.. Very very nice work.. We are enjoying your figure eight knot hook you made us.. It sits in a place of honor holding a nice flower pot in the house here in our dining room window..     John, with the addition of a striker device (think another shouldered square plug) to the ring, or on the plate where the ring would land, you could have a ring door striker.

    what a great project john. thanks heaps for it. always thinking of alternate ways to do things i wonder for that cross over piece if you could lay it across, hold it down with your hold fast and use your set hammers to make the set downs on either side. might stop it jumping around on you. Just thinking out loud is all.

      Personally I would just set up the same jig clamped to the flypress table and do the whole thing in one squish

    I would like to be a patreon but then I would have to be there for Roy and Dan and Alex Steele and Valhalla I have bought downloads from Roy lessons and tools from Dan would love one of Valhalla’s knives but unless I win the lottery I guess I will have to try making one myself yours was the first UA-cam blacksmith channel I came across 3 years ago and feel guilty I have not contributed but my grandson has benefited from the lessons I have learned from you

    The tenon and monkey tool makes me wonder if you could forge weld a bar to the inside of a pipe, very easily or super hard to get to weld?

    btw I have quastion. I tried shooting my work. but i had heating problem of camera. I used Nicon’s mirrorless J5.
    Which model you using mainly? I saw sony & cannon, please tell me specific
    While in shootinf didn’t you have same problem? if you did how solved it?

      I have not had an overheating problem. I do shoot in 1080p which should be less likely to overheat. My cameras are Canon M50s I talk a bit about them in this video ua-cam.com/video/dtUpKmp-xZs/v-deo.html

    What kind of finish would you recommend for using in a kitchen or bathroom?

      I generally just use a wax finish and re apply when needed. But paint or powder coating would be longer lasting

    I have a question about the monkey tool. What's the purpose of the hole that appears to be drilled in the side? Does that keep the piece from sticking?

    Is there a video on this channel about forging all the letters from the alphabet? My close friends are having a baby this year and I wanted to forge the name for their wall or somewhere

      I have never tried, but it does seem like I've seen it in a book, which doesn't narrow it won much.

      I thought it was explained in this video that you were able to watch for free. What you will see on UA-cam isn't likely to change just because I am providing those people contributing to the process through Patreon with a little extra. Everything I have ever posted on UA-cam is still right where it always was and still free.The reality is I earn an income I can live on or I stop making videos all together.

      As a hobby blacksmith with a full time job I really admire you for having the comittment to do this full time. Anything you can do to get extra income and value add for your subscribers can only be a good thing IMO. Keep up the good work. Your videos are a wonderful resource for anyone that is into blacksmithing and I have learnt a great deal from them. Well done John.
