  • The S2 Del Mar is releasing soon, and I had to find out for myself if it is worth the $15k price tag - the only problem is that the closest demo unit is about 250 miles from my house, and there was just ONE day that I could take one for a spin. So I loaded up my LiveWire with my camera gear, and headed to Concord, NC to take the Del Mar for a spin!

    As someone who used to drive a Chevy Spark EV that had a 90-mile range (at best), I sympathize and envy you in equal amounts. It's a pain constantly stopping to charge but it also provided adventure in planning, drafting off of semis, looking for alternative routes, and a sense of relief & accomplishment in finally finding a working charger. Nobody really mentions the great feeling you have charging when you barely made it to the station. It feels like victory (haha).
    Enjoy your Livewire, bud. :-)

      You know, some of my best memories on big long distance trips were made when I was charging. I appreciate having to stop along the way. And yes, it does feel good when a plan comes together!

    What most folks don’t understand about interstate travel is the danger of wildlife.
    On One a trip up in Washington state I was advised travel in staggered formation next to vehicles which will block animals crossing the road.
    I also ran over a few rabbits during a storms while doing a cannonball run on my Livewire! ABPR is my basis for long distance but I always validate it with PlugShare based on my Experice with my bike. Great video Ben

      Thanks, Diego! I typically do not like to travel if the sun is down, however this was a special circumstance. ABRP is a great place to start, rough idea, I always follow up with checking each station on the network app or plug share to make sure it's viable.

    Rivian will open there chargers to other bikes and cars either later this year or next year so you will be able to use them soon

    Wow that intro was intense! Rivian charging only? Who do they think they are, Tesla?? Security guard sees you drop a backpack in the bushes and leave.. not suspicious at all haha. Man that drafting difference was huge! Dino charger is a much better option than dino fuel. So uh.. what color Del Mar are you getting? XD

      It's true what they say - Dino Charger is the way to go. As for the Del Mar, let's just say it's going to be a surprise.

    Awesome video. I had a dear cross in front of me just a week ago on my LiveWire thankfully was going slow and I saw it well in time. I'm glad you explained the range guestimater short and long options, I had just assumed that long was guessing how far you could make it at reasonable speeds and short was if you were to hammer the throttle.

    thanks for this video Ben. Any word if livewire is going to join the movement to the tesla NACS charging standard over CCS standard that auto EV makers have been doing lately? that would greatly increase the charging coverage for the livewire immediately. that would rock. keep up the videos! thank you.

    • @AdventuresonZero
      @AdventuresonZero  Рік тому +1

      You're welcome! Nothing official, however I wouldn't doubt it's being discussed among all EV makers at the moment. From what I understand, it's not as easy as replacing an outlet - there are handshake protocols that exist between level 3 chargers and the vehicle. Level 2 is a 'dumb' connection, and doesn't require much communication between devices like level 3 does. If everyone is going to NACS, there has to be testing. I'm not an expert in any of this, but I wouldn't expect NACS to be widespread for the next year or two - the industry is a big ship with a small rudder.

    Hi Ben, i really appreciate it your videos! Thank you for sharing your adventures & analogy about the livewire. I currently own a 2020 Livewire purchased New. I got a Question for you. I'm only getting 92 to 93 miles per charge. Always ride on green eco range. Most of the time freeway 70 to 80 miles speed. How many miles you get per charge? Thans Again. Love your videos!

      @AdventuresonZero  Рік тому +2

      Glad you’re enjoying them! That range sounds about right for the speeds you’re going. Keep in mind that the best mode for range is a custom profile with 0 regen, 0 throttle, and 0 regen. I’ll have a video later this summer on how to maximize range. Have you looked into getting a windscreen? That will also help with range.

      @AdventuresonZero Thank you for getting back to me so quickly. You are the Best! I will take your advice for customized miles, range, and windshield. I have to thank you again for one of your videos where you demonstrated how to add an extender miror. For over 2 years, I rode with the original mirrors that gave me poor visibility. That was a game changer! Thank you. If you ever come to the bay area please don't hesitate to contact me. I will love to ride with you.
      Ride safe. 💪👍

      @@AdventuresonZero that sounds strange. why would you want 0 regen?

    • @AdventuresonZero
      @AdventuresonZero  Рік тому

      @@NotAffiliated it really depends on the situation, but essentially I only activate regen when I have no other choice but to slow down or stop. You will always consume more energy accelerating than you will gain energy by regen. Regen can generate a LOT of energy, 10-20kW, but it’s such a short duration that it doesn’t replenish anywhere near what is expended. So the idea is to coast as much as you can - and let momentum carry you rather than using the battery’s power. There’s no sense in putting a small amount of energy back into the battery, then taking a bunch out. The energy you spend just getting back to speed after a regen slowdown is usually more than whatever energy you gained.

    What was your total time spent charging your bike for the 500 mile ride? My bike would take 3 gas stops to make that drive.

    • @AdventuresonZero
      @AdventuresonZero  Рік тому

      Counting the time I was charging the bike during the demo ride, probably around 3-3.5 hours. Were it not for the demo ride, attempting the rivian charger, I likely would have been home around 5 or 6pm.

    Out of curiosity does constantly stopping to recharge harm the battery

    • @AdventuresonZero
      @AdventuresonZero  3 місяці тому

      Yes and no. Heat is the enemy to batteries, so if you want to damage it, keep it as hot as possible for as long as possible. Having said that, the bike has the best thermal management out of any bike currently, and it’s almost a 5 year old design. You likely will never see degradation

    So goofy you spent your whole trip screwing and worrying with range and chargers you're defeating the whole thing about riding a bike. The network won't be in place for another 10 years, plus you screwed up buying a DC fast charging bike. Harley was too cheap to include an onboard AC charger where you would otherwise have thousands of more choices to charge. Hell you can't even fast charge at home the bike is a waste!
