A tutorial to show how to add elastic thread to the cuffs of hand knit socks. This same process can be used for store bought socks or other items that could benefit from the properties of elastic thread.
Your tutorials are very direct and easy to follow, I could listen to you teach for hours while I hand sew. Please show us a tutorial on the sewing kit and thread catcher! So handy and cute! Thanks for all your time!
I'm sorry Cindy but I managed to miss this comment. The needle keeper was a gift but the pattern is available for free here: www.popularpatchwork.com/news/article/simple-sewing-companion/210/ I haven't made one myself....yet ;)
I NEVER knew about threading which end of the thread to keep it from binding up!! THEN I learn the best way EVER to thread the needle! Great tutorial. I know very little about sewing, but I think I can save the neck of my sweater with this technique.
I’m so happy my video was helpful. I hope you can save your sweater. I know how frustrating and discouraging It can be to finish a project and not be happy with parts of It. Good luck!!
@@rsislandcrafts OH My GOSH I did it!!!!!!! I followed your directions. Had a "what the heck do I do here" moment, and winged it over the seam, pulled my thread, and what do you know, it came out beautifully. Thank you so much!
I have some saggy socks I've been looking to fix, and this was exactly what I needed - thanks for making such a useful, easy-to-follow instruction video!
I'm glad I found your video! It really helped me to fix up my first ever pair of knitted socks (I was so discouraged when they came out too loose on the cuff)
I use this elastic hand-wound on a bobbin for my sewing machine for shirring. It works great. You are excellent instructor! Loved this tutorial. You are a fantastic pro knitter!😍👏🏼
I love those opposite socks.....this is the way my mind works. Great tutorial. A couple of my first pair are getting a bit loose. This will work just fine. Thanks.
Hi, Robin! I've been knitting socks for years and this is the first time I've ever seen this method. It saved a pair of socks I knit for my son, and we're BOTH super grateful. Thank you! Now, by any chance do you have a pattern for your little triangular 'trash catcher'? It's adorable!
We spend time and money on our hand knit socks. I’m happy my video could help you save yours. Yes, I do have a video for the thread catcher. m.ua-cam.com/video/fwoEGD_yPts/v-deo.html
Thanks for the tutorial. I don't mind adding elastic thread, but is there any knitting technique that will make a cuff stretchy enough to fit around the leg but doesn't fall down?
I use the 1x1 twisted rib for my cuffs. I think the key is to make the cuff longer. I also prefer a shorter leg which means I don’t have to figure in any calf adjustments. At least that works for me. I enjoy knitting but my problem solving skills are limited. I can follow patterns but my knowledge is limited beyond that. I’m not a designer. Have you tried googling or searching here on UA-cam? That’s my usual method. 🙃. Good luck! P.S. I only added elastic thread to the socks that I knit too the for me.
Thank you! This will help me tighten ribbing in a hat I just finished. I also want to start knitting socks. I like your samples; any suggestions for similar sock patterns?
Vicky Guadagno You’re welcome. I knit toe up and I like to use the waffle stitch toe up sock pattern. It’s free on Ravelry. My son doesn’t like a heel flap and gusset and the waffle stitch pattern has the easiest heel I’ve seen and It fits nice. I knit toe up so I can just knit until I run out of yarn. The socks in this video are different patterns because I was trying to find the one that worked for us. There’s several free designs on Ravelry. Try searching vanilla sock pattern and several basic designs will pop up. Have fun!!
I think this method is better than knitting with an elastic knitting thread. It's a constant battle to keep pulling the elastic snug without pulling your yarn to tight, unless you can knit continental and English
:O So that's why my thread always knots like crazy! I almost always thread the end I just cut! Thank you so much for teaching me not to do it that way! (Also thank you for the tutorial)
The elastic thread saved many of my first tries at sock knitting. I knit toe up socks and my favorite ribbing is K1P1 twisted rib. It looks nice and stays up throughout the day. Have fun!
Most of the socks in this video were made using the TWO AT ONCE TOE UP MAGIC LOOP SOCKS by knit picks. The pattern is free on Ravelry. You don’t really need to knit them two at a time or magic loop of course. I believe I knit maybe 25 rounds after the heel and possibly 15 rounds of ribbing. You can make the leg and cuff as long or short as you wish. Tons of knitters love the ROSE CITY ROLLERS sock pattern for shortie socks. Happy knitting!!
Cool! Crocheter learning to knit and doing fantastic. Yeah I found it on Amazon. They do have red fyi. I got a back and white. I'm curious about the one u knit into it.
I did see that It comes in a few colors. I’ve seen sock kits that come with a small spool of elastic thread that you knit into the heal to make It sturdier.
@@rsislandcrafts oh that's cool! Yeah it drives me bonkers when socks fall down into my shoes. I've never had hand knit socks though so I don't know how they behave. I ordered some of that thread immediately.
The pair of socks in this video had been worn and washed a few times. I think I’d want to block my socks first. That way the cuff would look neater so I could see where I wanted to thread the elastic but also so that the cuff would be “accurate”.
Hi! Do you think there will be a difference between sewing in the elastic thread and knitting the thread together like a double strand? Or do you think it will be the same level of elasticity nonetheless? I was just wondering between those two options. Thank you! This is a great video x
I think if I had a choice I would probably knit the elastic along with the yarn. That’ll give It a bit more stretch I think. I haven’t tried It so it’s all just guessing. There are some socks kits that come with a little spool of elastic that’s meant to be held together with the yarn. This version is a good option if you have an older pair of socks that are falling down. You could try a little test cuff and see how It looks and feels to you.
If they previously were knit to stay up but then became loose then I would think yes, It should work. If the socks were loose straight off of the needles then maybe. It can’t hurt to try though. Good luck!

Thank you so much!!! I've been trying to find out how to use elastic thread without adding a ruffle effect. This was awesome thank you x

I swear you can find anything and everything on UA-cam! Just what I needed to tighten up my dad’s birthday socks cuffs after they finish blocking.

Amanda Oram I agree. Keeping your tension even on socks is hard enough without adding the struggle of elastic thread.
Thanks for the easy to follow tutorial!

Do you block the socks first or do the elastic?
