This is just what I was looking for! I just started crocheting hats for charity. Unlike knitted hats, crochet hats don’t have much of a stretch to them, and they sit rather loosely on the head. I think this elastic method will be the perfect solution to allow a bit of stretch while wearing, and to allow the hat to retain its shape. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for the tutorial… to avoid my hats stretching out… I add elastic…on the next to the last row the my hats..& then do a row of sc.. to cover the elastic…
I just found your channel. Thank you for sharing your techniques. Could you please show us how you end your rows and start the new row? That would complete this tutorial. Thanks again.
You are so welcome! when i work with the elastic i don't end the rounds i just keep adding like a spiral really so each round is about a quarter inch higher than the last. hope this helps!
Thank you so much for this great tutorial!! I am not a crocheter however I have applied your technique on a wool hat that I just completed and found that the ribbing needed a little extra snug; and its worked beautifully! Ive done 3 rows, wasnt sure how to carry the thread between the rows hwoever..
Thank you for showing up on my feed😁 Just recently made a gorgious hat that has already become to wide and was thinking about what i could do about that. Now i know. Thank you very much🌞🍀
Where can you get this UNIQUE Brand stretch thread? I see it is made by H.A Kidd. Is using polyester or nylon thread the same thing and would it produce the same result?
Thanks for this helpful tutorial. My problem right now is a single crocheted Disney-inspired princess hat with long braided “hair”. I did the gauge, all measurements are right on, however, the “hair” weight has stretched the hat too long. It was started at the top and done in rounds. This is for a 6-year old, but fits an adult. Do you suppose I could use elastic thread either horizontally every few rounds, or perhaps vertically? I hope someone can help. It is my Grandaughter’s Birthday gift for today.
Oh gosh I can totally see how that could happen. You may want to take a few rounds out flog it has also stretched length wise. Then do rounds with the elastic bottom up. I would think just 2-3 inches up the hat should fix the problem. Let me know how you make out and good luck!
I did a quick, but durable fix. The hat stretched 4 rows too long. Using a darning needle and matching yarn (doubled with a knot). From the inside, I counted down 4 rows from the top and did a running stitch, cinched it, tied it off. I was left with a little ball on top. This ball will help to raise the hat as well. On the outside, it is a cute, soft gather. I like it better than before, and her eyes will show. I’ll try to take a couple pics to send to you. Now to rest my brain. 😀
Hi Melissa - when i work with the elastic i don't end the rounds i just keep adding like a spiral really so each round is about a quarter inch higher than the last. hope this helps!
Hello, thank you for the video. I know sewing a little so I was thinking about doing that to fix my son hat. I PRAY that I will achieve fixing it! I have naively stretched it by ironing it. I thought it was just a “regular hat” first I put it in the wash. It came out a little wrinkle then I decided to iron the edge. I couldn’t understand why my son was so upset about a stretched hat until I looked it to replace it. He told me it was a gift from his friend in college. The price tag is $285 (on sale). Oh my! I was an idiot on steroid because I wash and iron everything!!!! Now, he hides all his hats and sneakers from me when he is home from college. Thank you again for the tip!!!!
OH MY GOODNESS! Well I really hope it all worked out and so happy to help :). I am the same way with the dryer if it can't go in I shouldn't own it. Ironing.... well lets just say I wear a lot of sweaters 😂
Bloody brilliant. I made my daughter a beanie but she was not with me and when she got it it was a little loose. I'm visiting her soon so I'll pack a crochet hook and elastic thread so I can fix when I'm there. Kia ora from New Zealand
Lovely! I just ran into your channel and I love listening to you explain and the great things you teach. Regarding this tip, how does the elastic directly on the skin and hair work? I feel it would tangle or feel akward...?
@@prettydarnadorable I went ahead and did it anyway! It worked perfectly, I just didn´t tie the end properly and it came off. But no hair and skin issues :) thank you
Hey JD I am not sure of the exact thickness but I think thicker is better but bear in mind that you don't want the elastic showing once it has been sewn. So not too thick.
THANK YOU! Now I know how to fix my beanies that I made. They really get loosen or big on the rim washed or not. Thank you sooooo much! Subed and Liked :)
Thank you for this. I think, if we like to make hats, couldn't we include the elastic when we are done completing the project because you know those things are gonna stretch! I made my husband a hat and carefully fit it but within a week he started saying it was loose. So if I make him another at a later time, shouldn't we just include the elastic right away so we don't have to fix the project later?
Lisa, I totally agree. I always make a swatch before I make a hat but inevitably the hat stretches out. I always downsize my needles too -UGH. I also have wondered if knitting the rim with elastic added to yarn might work too. Hope someone sees this and can advice us. PS. I've also tried different cast ons and still have this issue.
@@angelcso100 I also read (but haven't tried it before) that because of the way Tunisian crochet is worked, there is a lot less stretch. May be something to try! But I am ordering some clear elastic to work in because my husband said that was his preference over the other options I gave him. I also saw reduce the needle size etc. But if you're saying that still stretches then I will just work elastic in all the time then.
Okay I tried it but only after one row it was too tight for my husband. I'm gonna be trying something else. Instead of stitching around I may weave the elastic straight around and see how he likes that.
Thank you I can see why this is needed - if it helps try working in a spiral meaning as your approach the end of the round try working into the next round. I hope this helps and thanks so much for the feedback!
This is a wonderful tutorial and I plan on using this for sure for a beanie that needs some TLC!! Thank you for that!! We were curious though... do you happen to know what pattern both of these beanies are made with??
I wish you would have shown how to start the second and third rounds and also the ending was a little too fast and far away to get a good look at what you did.p

Thank you! I just made my first ever crochet hat and it's far too big. Nice to know it might still be rescuable!

You are very welcome! Did you figure out how to carry the thread? It is tricky because of the stretch for sure
Thank you for showing up on my feed😁

You are so welcome
I’m excited to try this on 2 of my knitted hats! Thank you for showing me how to achieve a tighter band as I thought my hats were ruined!
My pleasure! Be sure to let me know how the come out :)
Is there a specific thickness the elastic thread should be? I’ll definitely share my outcome
Thank you so much ma’am! I fixed my beanie that I won’t give up! lol
Have a good life!
Love this! Is it crocheted top down?
Yes, it is!
I went to google and typed in colored elastic thread and a whole bunch came up in tons and tons of colors. Hope this helps.
Thank you for your video. .I am a knitter who became over zealous with my cast onstage and the hat is waaaaay big. Will this work for knitters? TIA😊
Yes for sure!!! It even works on store bought hats :)

Actually , I want to stretch my woollen cap to make look loose ...
Is there a way to that...
Wash or wet it stretch and lay it flat. :)

Hi from Canada! So glad this helped - crochet is notorious for stretching so I do this all the time. Hope she loves her hat :)
Hello What brand of elastic thread are you using
Thank you for this the previous video I watched the guy suggested cutting a triangle strip out of the hat and I did not think that was a good idea. .
Glad this helped - that other video would work great for fleece hats - not sure about crochet or knit I imagine they would unravel.
Very useful , and very clear and succinct video …Thankyou 😊

Would this fix a hat that's rolling up? Trying not to undo everything and start over
Yes it should help keep it in place :)
My hat has a ribbed part that is stretched out. How do I fix that?
What thickness of elastic thread should I buy?
